In this episode of Mind the Kids, the podcast from the Association for Child and Adolescent Mental Health (ACAMH), host Dr. Clara Faria — academic clinical fellow in child psychiatry — is joined by Professor Lauren Kenworthy, Division Chief, Neuropsychology Director, Center for Autism Spectrum Disorders Pediatric Neuropsychologist, at the Children's National Hospital, based in Washington DC.Professor Kenworthy shares findings from her landmark study, 'Executive Function Challenges Persist into Young Adulthood and Predict Mental Health Outcomes in Autism', published in JCPP — ACAMH's flagship peer-reviewed journal. Drawing on over 300 autistic individuals and more than 900 observations spanning ages 2 to 25, this is one of the most comprehensive longitudinal investigations into executive function trajectories and mental health outcomes in autism to date. The episode unpacks what executive functions are — the brain-based cognitive abilities governing flexibility, working memory, and impulse control — and why they matter so profoundly for the mental health of autistic young people. With approximately 70% of autistic children and 63% of autistic adults experiencing mental health challenges at any given time, Professor Kenworthy explains why understanding the relationship between executive dysfunction and depression and anxiety in autism is not just academically important, but urgent.Among the most striking findings: executive function challenges — particularly cognitive inflexibility — remain clinically elevated from early childhood all the way through young adulthood, persisting even in young people who have had access to clinical support. Anxiety symptoms worsen significantly for autistic girls, with measurable divergence from their male peers emerging around age 12 — a finding with major implications for autism diagnosis, gender differences in autism, and targeted mental health intervention.Professor Kenworthy also shares her work developing Unstuck and On Target, a school-based executive function intervention designed to be delivered by educators — not just clinicians — addressing the urgent need for scalable, real-world, evidence-based autism support in schools. The conversation covers participatory research, the 12-year evidence-to-implementation gap, the limits of existing interventions including ABA, and why autistic voices must be central to the future of autism research and intervention design.Essential listening for clinicians, researchers, educators, and anyone with a stake in autism mental health, early intervention, and neurodevelopmental research.Read the paper 'Executive function challenges persist into young adulthood and predict mental health outcomes in autism' https://doi.org/10.1111/jcpp.70149Lauren Kenworthy, Lauren Baczewski, Alan H. This episode of the Mind the Kids podcast features Dr. Joanne Park, clinical psychologist and Principal Investigator of the Parenting Resilient Kids (Park) Lab at Mount Royal University, Canada. Hosted by Clara Faria, the conversation explores emerging research on “climate worry” in early adolescence, drawing on Dr. Park's recent publication in Child and Adolescent Mental Health.Dr. Park examines whether concerns about climate change represent a distinct psychological construct or are simply an extension of generalised anxiety. The discussion unpacks the difference between affective climate worry—emotional responses to climate change—and cognitive climate worry, which reflects more developed fears about future impact. Importantly, the findings suggest that climate worry is not only common among younger adolescents but may also have unique associations with wellbeing, independent of general anxiety. The episode also highlights key developmental, social, and gender-related factors shaping how young people experience climate-related distress. Dr. Park discusses why girls and gender-diverse adolescents may report higher levels of climate worry, and considers how clinicians, educators, and parents can respond without over-pathologising what may be a rational reaction to the climate crisis. This conversation is essential listening for clinicians, researchers, and educators interested in child and adolescent mental health, particularly those working with anxiety, emotional development, and the psychological impact of global challenges. It also offers practical insight into how to support young people in managing climate-related concerns through adaptive coping and resilience-building strategies.Read the CAMH journal paper ‘Prevalence, conceptual distinctiveness, and cross-sectional correlates of climate worry in Canadian adolescents' - https://doi.org/10.1111/camh.70076Joanne L. In this episode of the Mind the Kids, Clara Faria speaks with Professor Nathalie Auger and Professor Howard Steiger about new research exploring how maternal anorexia nervosa may influence children's mental health and neurodevelopment.Using a large population-based cohort, the study examines links between maternal eating disorders and outcomes such as anorexia nervosa, attentional difficulties, and other psychiatric risks in offspring. The discussion highlights the role of genetic vulnerability, environmental exposure, and epigenetic mechanisms, offering a nuanced understanding of how risk is transmitted across generations. The episode also considers important clinical implications, including the benefits of early treatment, the importance of reducing stigma, and how supporting maternal mental health can improve outcomes for future generations.A must-listen for professionals in child and adolescent mental health, psychiatry, psychology, and anyone interested in eating disorders and developmental research.Read the CAMH journal paper ‘Maternal anorexia nervosa and risk of mental and neurodevelopmental morbidity in offspring'Sam Amar, Gabriel Côté-Corriveau, Mimi Israël, Howard Steiger, Nancy Low, Nicholas Chadi, Émilie Brousseau, Nahantara Lafleur, Nathalie AugerFirst published: 02 December 2025 https://doi.org/10.1111/camh.70051Get a free CPD/CME certificate for listening to this podcast by registering for a FREE ACAMH Learn account at https://bit.ly/4fF4BBWVisit https://www.acamh.orgFacebook and LinkedIn search / ACAMHInstagram https://www.instagram.com/assoc.camhBluesky https://bsky.app/profile/acamh.bsky.socialX https://x.com/acamh

In this episode of Carpool Conversations, Amy and Sara sit down with Taylor Shannon from ESP (Extra Special People) to talk about what it really means to help kids with disabilities experience belonging. Taylor shares how ESP creates relationship-centered spaces where individuals with disabilities and their families are known, valued, and included, and offers practical encouragement for parents who want to raise compassionate, confident kids who see and celebrate others well. Together, they discuss how to respond when kids ask awkward questions in public, simple ways families can build genuine friendships within the disability community, and what parents should look for when choosing inclusive environments like summer camps. Taylor also speaks directly to parents navigating a new diagnosis or difficult season, reminding them that they are not alone and that their child's value has never changed. Whether your family has firsthand experience with disability or you simply want to help your kids grow in empathy and kindness, this conversation is full of insights, wisdom, and hope. Welcome to Mind the Kids, the ACAMH podcast where research meets real-world practice in child and adolescent mental health. In this episode, 'Anxiety, does the apple fall far from the tree?', Dr. Jane Gilmour and Professor Umar Toseeb explore whether anxiety runs in families, what the latest research says about clinically anxious parents and children's anxiety disorders, and how genetic, environmental, and family factors may shape risk. Joining them is Dr Sigrid Elfström, lead author of a population-based study published in the Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry. The conversation also looks at why diagnosis is not destiny, why prevention matters, and how to communicate risk without parent blaming. They discuss whether anxiety can be transmitted through family processes, what the findings mean in practice, and how clinicians and parents can think about risk without assuming it is deterministic. This episode covers: Children's anxiety disorders. Clinically anxious parents. Parent-child mental health. Genetic and environmental influences. Family processes and prevention. This episode is really special to me.You're going to meet two girls who are both showing us what strength looks like… just in very different ways.First, you'll meet Leahla. Right now, she's going through treatment for Hodgkin's lymphoma. And the way she talks about it? The way she carries herself? It stopped me in my tracks. She's not looking for pity. She's not calling herself a “nebach.” Her words: “We're not nebachs. We're heroes.”And once you hear her explain what that means… you won't forget it.Then you'll meet Sari. After her baby sister spent time in the NICU, Sari realized something powerful: She doesn't just want to learn… she wants to help. She's already thinking about becoming a nurse one day, maybe in oncology, maybe in the NICU… and the way she talks about caring for people, really seeing them, is something every kid (and adult!) needs to hear.So this episode is about two kinds of strength: ✨ The strength to go through something hard ✨ And the strength to step up and help others through it

Travel with Kids Podcast rec! What happens when your kids fly business class before they can spell it? We tackle the uneasy question head-on: are we raising entitled travelers—or can points-powered perks actually teach humility, gratitude, and grit? Drawing from our own path—from rural road trips and solo backpacking to parenting three kids with a points strategy—we share the mindset shifts that turned “is this too much?” into “how do we frame this well?”We start by defining entitlement in practical terms: not nice experiences, but the expectation of them. Then we open the curtain on the hidden work that makes “free” travel possible—earning and redeeming points, offsetting annual fees, stalking award space for five seats, and choosing trade-offs. When kids see the effort, they understand the privilege. From there, we focus on modeling over lecturing. The tone we set—thanking staff, marveling at an economy seat's movie selection, celebrating a sunset from a budget room—shapes how our kids assign value to comfort, people, and place.Money talk plays a starring role. We walk through real numbers—cash rates, point valuations, taxes—and turn it into simple math for older kids: how many hours at $10 an hour equals a hotel night? That perspective check pairs with a conscious rewrite of scarcity scripts. Instead of “don't get used to it,” we teach that with planning and responsibility, they can build the life they want—travel or not. We also highlight the quiet wins travel gives kids: resilience through jet lag, flexibility during delays, adventurous palates, and empathy born from noticing what's different and what's the same.To root those lessons deeper, we add service. Local volunteering like meal packing, and one-day opportunities with reputable groups on trips, turn comfort into contribution without savior narratives. By the end, our stance is clear: perks don't create entitlement—stories do. We choose to tell a story of gratitude, effort, and respect, so luxury becomes a lesson rather than a baseline. If this conversation resonates, follow along, share it with a travel-loving parent, and leave a quick rating and review so more families can find the show.

We discuss how OPOL works in their house and how their "secret" language didn't stay secret for very long with their oldest. She opens up about some things she would like to change to make sure their children's Arabic stays strong as they get older.Listen to get the background story on why they write their bilingual kids books and what they hope people will gain from them. Vanessa purposely put interactive elements into them and even a choose-your-own-adventure into one of the latest ones.Make sure you listen to the end to hear my new favorite German word!- Follow Vanessa on Instagram @polyglotparents.- Find links all of their books & audiobooks here.- Check out and buy their books internationally on Amazon.- Listen to the Egyptian Arabic Stories for Kids Podcast Heather mentioned.

DRB Kids is a part of the one year Bible family of podcasts from the Daily Radio Bible. DRB Kids is a daily Bible reading podcast for kids. Children and families around the world gather to listen to amazing stories from the Bible. These short 5 minute podcasts will encourage your family, inspire your children, and help root your Child's life in the story of God's love for the world. Find out more at www.drbkids.com Welcome to the Daily Radio Bible for Kids! In today's episode, host Hunter invites kids from around the world to journey through the Bible together, reading powerful passages and discovering the incredible stories within. As we turn to Acts chapter 8, we'll find out how Philip follows the guidance of an angel to meet an Ethiopian official who's eager to learn about Jesus—and what happens when the Ethiopian asks Philip for baptism. Hunter also thanks listeners who volunteered as guest readers and gives a sneak peek at the upcoming Friday Friends segment. Plus, we're reminded from 1 Chronicles 16:23 to proclaim the good news every day. Tune in for encouragement, inspiration, and the reminder that you are deeply loved! TODAY'S DEVOTION: Philip listened and obeyed. Today, we saw how the Holy Spirit led Philip to a man from Ethiopia who was searching for understanding and truth. All it took was Philip's willingness to listen for God's guidance—and then obey. He didn't hesitate or question; he just did what God asked him to do. And because Philip listened, the Ethiopian man heard the good news about Jesus, believed, and wanted to be baptized right away! Sometimes, we might think that sharing the good news about Jesus is only for special people or big moments. But today's story reminds us that God can use anyone, anytime, anywhere, if we are paying attention to his leading. Philip met the Ethiopian where he was, answered his questions, and introduced him to the hope and love found in Jesus. And that's the opportunity God gives us, too. If we're willing to pay attention to the nudges of the Holy Spirit—to the little thoughts that encourage us to speak, share, invite, or simply show love—we might be surprised how God can use us. Sometimes God will prompt us to help a friend, talk to someone who's lonely, or even read the Bible with someone who has questions. The good news of Jesus is for everyone, everywhere. Let's ask God to help us be ready to see those opportunities and to give us words to say. Like Philip, let's step out with courage and trust that God will use us to bring his good news to the world. The Bible tells us, “Let the whole earth sing to the Lord! Each day proclaim the good news that he saves.” (1 Chronicles 16:23) That's my prayer for my own heart, for my family, and for you. May we listen, obey, and be ready to share God's love and the story of Jesus wherever we go. DONATE TO THE PODCAST to help kids around the world recieve these podcasts free everyday. Thanks!
