What happens when dedicated teachers with advanced degrees and decades in the classroom realize the system isn't working for their own children? Two extraordinary educators share their journeys into the unknown world of homeschooling after collectively spending over 40 years in public education.Deanna and Leigh Ann take us behind the curtain of their transition from traditional schooling to home education, revealing the personal "enough is enough" moments that pushed them to make radical changes for their families. One witnessed her son three grade levels behind in math catch up within six months. The other found herself peeking into a classroom to see her young son sitting dejected and crying behind a mask. These deeply human experiences—not academic theories—drove their decisions to create something different. Both women candidly admit the learning curve was steep. They initially tried replicating school at home with rigid schedules and desk work before discovering that true learning looks radically different: conjugating verbs while jumping on trampolines, incorporating cooking as applied mathematics, and allowing natural curiosity to drive deeper investigation. With refreshing honesty, they discuss working full-time while homeschooling (yes, it's possible), the importance of "deschooling" before implementing formal curricula, and why Finland achieves 100% literacy by starting formal education at age seven.Whether you're a curious parent wondering about alternatives, a teacher questioning the system, or a homeschooler seeking validation, this conversation offers practical wisdom without judgment. The message is clear: you don't need specialized credentials to educate your children. As Leanne says, "You can learn with them. If you don't know how to do it, learn alongside them." Their stories prove that sometimes the most powerful educational choice is simply choosing to do things differently.Want to explore these ideas further? Leigh Ann assesses the political aftershocks rippling through the Democratic ranks in the wake of what many in the party see as Chuck Schumer's disastrous capitulation to the GOP in the government shutdown showdown; the grassroots potency of the Bernie Sanders/AOC road show and its unequivocally populist messaging; the uneasy combination of public denialism and private fear among Republicans about the continuing outbursts of anti-DOGE sentiment at GOP town hall meetings across the country; and the party's barely concealed lack of appetite for heeding Donald Trump's calls to impeach federal judges who rule against him. “Almost every storyline we're familiar with suggests that we should banish [darkness] as quickly as possible—because darkness is often presented as a void of doom rather than a force of nature that nourishes lives, including our own.” According to Dark Sky International, 99% of people in the US live under the influence of skyglow. With each artificial light we install, we grow more unfamiliar with darkness and its riches. But what if darkness, instead of being a source of danger and discomfort, could be the very place where life flourishes in unexpected ways? In Night Magic: Adventures Among Glowworms, Moon Gardens, and Other Marvels of the Dark (Algonquin Books, 2024), Leigh Ann Henion invites us to discover the amazing creatures and species that exist within darkness, from fireflies and moths to salamanders and glowworms. Henion bravely explores the biodiversity of her home region of Appalachia, taking us to a synchronous firefly event in Tennessee, a bat outing in Alabama, and a moth festival in Ohio. In North Carolina, she finds forests alight with bioluminescent mushrooms, neighborhood trees full of screech owls, and valleys teeming with migratory salamanders. Along the way, Henion encounters naturalists, biologists, primitive-skills experts, and others who've dedicated their lives to cultivating relationships with darkness. In an age of increasing artificial light, Night Magic focuses on the profound beauty that still surrounds us after sunset.
