Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.— Matthew 11:28-30Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me [following Me as My disciple].— Matthew 11:29For at least several decades the churches of the Western world have not made discipleship a condition of being a Christian. One is not required to be, or to intend to be, a disciple in order to become a Christian, one may remain a Christian without any signs of progress toward or in discipleship…Churches are filled with “undisciplined disciples”…Of course there is in reality no such thing. Most problems in contemporary churches can be explained by the fact that members have never decided to follow Christ.—Dallas Willard, The Great OmissionDisciple says we are people who spend our lives apprenticed to our master, Jesus Christ. We are in a growing-learning relationship, always. A disciple is a learner, but not in the academic setting of a schoolroom, rather at the work site of a craftsman. We do not acquire information about God but skills in faith.— Eugene Peterson, A Long Obedience in the Same Direction1 - Be with Jesus2 - Become Like Jesus3 - Do as Jesus Did1 - Be with Jesus3 Places to Experience God's Presence1 - Scripture2 - Creation3 - People2 - Become Like JesusSanctify them by the truth; your word is truth. As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world. For them I sanctify myself, that they too may be truly sanctified.— John 17:17-18In our kind of culture anything, even news about God, can be sold if it is packaged freshly; but when it loses its novelty, it goes on the garbage heap. There is a great market for religious experience in our world; there is little enthusiasm for the patient acquisition of virtue, little inclination to sign up for a long apprenticeship in what earlier generations of Christians called holiness.— Eugene Peterson, A Long Obedience in the Same Direction3 - Do as Jesus DidThe Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor.—Luke 4:18-19Our tendency today is to define “the poor” economically, on a scale of annual household income or with reference to an established, national or international poverty line. But this is only another reflection of our tendency to read our own world back into Luke's…Luke is concerned above all with a category of people ordinarily defined above all by their dishonorable status, their exclusion.— Joel Green, The Theology of the Book of Luke
What makes a long-term pastorate successful? How do internships shape future ministers? And what does it look like to grow as a preacher over decades of ministry? In this episode of the Expositors Collective Podcast, Rev. Dr. Danny Hyde joins Mike Neglia to talk about his journey in ministry—from an eager young preacher to a seasoned pastor who has mentored over 20 pastoral interns and remained in one pulpit for over 25 years.Danny shares his first-ever sermon experience, his training at Westminster Seminary California, and the hard-won wisdom that came from being torn apart in homiletics class by Edmund Clowney,—only to be built back up by a compassionate mentor. He reflects on how becoming a father shaped his approach to pastoring, how relational ministry is just as important as doctrinal fidelity, and why internships are crucial for developing pastors who truly love preaching and love people.Other key topics include:The Cage-Stage Calvinist Years – What he's learned since his early years of ministry. The Role of Internships – How he mentors young men for the challenges of pastoral ministry. Why Long-Term Ministry Matters – The stability and intergenerational impact of staying in one congregation.Simplicity and Clarity in Preaching – Why he's working harder than ever to communicate with brevity and focus. Two Loves Every Pastor Needs – Why loving preaching isn't enough—you must also love your people.Drawing from his Ph.D. research on John Owen, his pastoral ministry, and his experience training future pastors, Danny offers wisdom for both young preachers and seasoned ministers alike. Bio - Rev. Dr. Danny HydeRev. Dr. Danny Hyde is the pastor of Oceanside United Reformed Church in California, where he has served since 2000. He also earned a Th.M. from Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary, a Master of Divinity from Westminster Seminary California, and a B.A. in Religion from Vanguard University.Dr. Hyde has been deeply involved in ministerial training, overseeing numerous interns who have gone on to pastoral ministry, and has taught theology and pastoral studies at institutions like Westminster Seminary California, Mid-America Reformed Seminary, Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary, and Greystone Theological Institute. His denominational service includes roles on committees for church planting, digital media in worship, and doctrinal commitment within the United Reformed Churches in North America (URCNA).As a scholar, he has authored over a dozen books, including This Is the Word of the Lord, Grace Worth Fighting For, Welcome to a Reformed Church, and God in Our Midst. His writing frequently explores Reformed theology, church planting, and worship, and he is widely recognized for his expertise on the theology of John Owen and the Canons of Dort.Beyond his academic work, Dr. Hyde is passionate about mentoring the next generation of pastors, preaching with clarity and simplicity, and staying rooted in long-term pastoral ministry. In this conversation, he shares insights from 25 years of pastoring, the challenges and blessings of long-term ministry, and why loving people is as important as loving to preach.——————For information about our upcoming training events visit ExpositorsCollective.com The Expositors Collective podcast is part of the CGNMedia, Working together to proclaim the Gospel, make disciples, and plant churches. Life is a journey of faith, a long obedience in the same direction. Hebrews 12 reminds us to run with perseverance, fixing our eyes on Jesus—the author and perfecter of our faith. Just like Abraham stepped out in trust, not knowing the full picture, we're called to daily obedience, walking in faith one step at a time. It's not about striving in our own strength but responding to the voice of God, knowing He is faithful to complete what He's started. Our faith isn't just for us—it's generational, impacting those who come after us. So let's keep moving forward, trusting that Jesus is leading us, strengthening us, and shaping us for His purpose.
Is your faith a long or short obedience? Are you following Jesus's direction? Do you have a tourist mindset? In today's episode, Jeff shares how Joshua 11 encourages us to see our faith as a long obedience in the same direction. Read the Bible with us in 2025! It's easy to feel overwhelmed by all the talk of New Year's resolutions, words of the year, annual goal setting, and more as we turn another page on our calendar. Of course, there's nothing wrong with that, but sometimes it brings a heaviness and guilt instead of motivation. It's okay to just stay focused on doing the next thing. Obedience to God's commandments leads to blessings, peace, and a deeper relationship with Him. Let's talk about the challenges of obedience, the cost of disobedience, and the role prayer plays in our walk with the Lord. In the final episode of 2024, Brian Delamont returns to the podcast to talk about transformed direction. Repentance isn't just a one-time event at the time of salvation but a daily surrender and redirection. Joel 2:12-13 “We can rationalize or explain just about anything in our behavior and our thinking rather than truly commit to a transformed direction.” “God is longing for us to genuinely change, for us to live lives fully integrated and aligned with Him.” Hear more about VIM on Episode 157 Listen to “Come, Thou Fount” here and read more about the story behind the song here Acts 2 “Repentance is not a one time for all time thing, but it is an ongoing act of our relationship with God.” “To repent is turning from sin and turning to God.” “It's impossible to underestimate the power of a transformational change in direction. It can break generational patterns of behavior and bring freedom to entire family lines, entire communities.” A Long Obedience in the Same Direction by Eugene Peterson “God does give us moments, like mile markers along the way, that show us progress.” Mark 1:15 “Transformation is not me mustering up enough grit or resolve to somehow change my life. Rather, I become a new creation in Christ Jesus. And this is made possible through the very life of Christ, the Holy Spirit living in me, pouring His life into my life in every way.” December Reflection: What do I know needs changing? In this message, Pastor Chad Narayan shares a powerful word on living a life of trust and obedience to God. Through the story of the three wise men, he encourages us to follow God's direction, even when the journey feels uncertain. This Christmas season, let's recommit to surrendering to Jesus and embracing the wonderful life He has planned for us. At Zoe, our mission is simple: People Saved, Disciples Made, Leaders Raised, and The Church Released. In the concluding message in this series we discover that a life of meaning can only be found in ‘a long obedience in the same direction'. Not obedience to any arbitrary standard we choose but obedience to God, produced in our lives by the power of the Holy Spirit.
Date: November 3, 2024 Worship Leader: Addy Norby Speaker: Chris Peppler Passage: Matthew 26-27 Reflection Questions: What is your long obedience in the same direction? What, by faith, are you compelled to pursue with your life? What is the preferred and lasting legacy of your life as a follower of Jesus?
Following Christ is a call to maintain integrity, rely on God's strength, and remain obedient despite challenges. This will require dependence on God, discernment in our responses to others, and the ability to persevere in faith.

Chris Maxwell's 12th book comes out October 1st. Each of the twelve chapters in the book, “Things We've Handed Down: Twelve Letters I Leave for You,” is written as a letter to a reader. The chapter titles are all book titles from books which have impacted Chris' life. He hopes to hand down to the next generation key life principles that he learned from the books. “Disappointment with God” by former Next Step guest Philip Yancey, “Wounds Are Where Light Enters” by Walter Wangerin Jr., “The Wounded Healer” by Henri J.M. Nouwen, “Life is Mostly Edges” by Calvin Miller, “Surprised by Joy” by C. S. Lewis, and “A Long Obedience in the Same Direction” by Eugene Peterson are just some of the chapters in this book.As a leader and a learner, what books have impacted your life? What lessons have you learned that you can “hand down” to others? How have disappointments and wounds brought you closer to God instead of farther from Him? How can we lead better by displaying love, acceptance, and forgiveness? Listen to the conversation. Pick up a copy of “Things We've Handed Down” and read it. Get copies for those you lead. Be sure you receive what's handed down to you and that you hand down God's love to others.Amazon: http://bit.ly/cmaxmanWebsite:chrismaxwell.me Facebook: facebook.com/PauseWithChrisMaxwellTwitter:@CMaxManInstagram: CMaxMan

Do you journal? If you don't you probably should. It is impossible to keep up with all the ways that God moves in your life unless you write them down. In my own practice, I try to sum up the major points of the day into a small, single page. Flipping through the journal shows me how I thought about a particular problem. Something that seemed absolutely *dominating* at the time, upon flipping through it, was only relevant for a couple weeks. It started, resolved, and now I've moved on. Some problems seemed to be the theme of life for a year or two, but again, those things resolved firmly and are behind me. It didn't seem like that at the time, though. The Bible, and our passage here before us, is like decades worth of journal entries summarized in a line or two. As we will see, vast stretches of time were spent between chapters, or even between sentences! Because you can read Abraham's life from start to finish in thirty minutes or so, we lose that sense of daily obedience that Abraham offers when it seems like nothing is happening. The majority of journal entries for me start with "Today was a long day," which once you've flipped through ten or fifteen straight pages of that, can feel discouraging. But looking back on the course of years, one can see what the Lord was doing all that time. That is what we are going to see with Abram. God is working in his life, but that does not mean that Abram sits back and does nothing. As we will see, in our single point today, God's authority and control does not eliminate your responsibility to obey.
We continue to look at the life of Samuel as he faithfully serves God in the midst of wickedness all around him.
A life of discipleship can be described as “a long obedience in the same direction.” While in our Christian walk, we might take wrong turns and have to course correct and get back on track moving forward toward the Lord, our desire should be to develop a pattern in our lives every day of taking one step closer to being like Christ. John 15:1-8 Deuteronomy 5:28-33 Genesis 12:1-10 Proverbs 24:16The post A Long Obedience in the Same Direction first appeared on Living Hope.

Episode 8 kicks off our brand new, seven-week series, The Psalms of Ascent: A Lenten Pilgrimage. The word translated “ascent” means “to go up.” It gives an idea of being on a journey, moving to a higher place spiritually. In this week's episode, Lisa and Laura dive into Psalm 121 and explore Scripture's response to when everything feels out of control. If you aren't convinced of God's protection or struggle to believe in His promises, you are in the right place. Join Lisa and Laura as they set our hearts on pilgrimage, unpacking today's Psalm and applying it to our daily lives. Open your Heart to our key Scripture. Psalm 121:1-8: Assurance of God's Protection. A Song of Ascents. I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth. He will not let your foot be moved, he who keeps you will not slumber. Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. The Lord is your keeper; the Lord is your shade on your right hand. The sun shall not strike you by day, nor the moon by night. The Lord will keep you from all evil; he will keep your life. The Lord will keep your going out and your coming in from this time forth and for evermore. Open your Bible to other Scriptures referenced in this episode. Luke 1:28: The Lord is with you! Nick Pitts of the Institute for Global Engagement talks about the weakness of resolutions. Instead, as Christians we need to make the moment by moment decisions to walk in the steps of Jesus. He also looks at the move to rein in sports gambling because of its effects on youth. Philos Project's Luke Moon talks with Carmen live from Israel and talks about the tension still in the Holy Land, and how Christianity in its current forms maybe be giving way to something new. We are a culture obsessed with efficiency. We want to do things well, but we also want them to happen fast. Another way to say this is that we're all very impatient. We want a high-quality life, but with as little effort and waiting as possible. We all want to find a simple and easy way to make our busy, overcrowded lives easier and more enjoyable. And so we bring this approach to the Bible or to a Church sermon. Give me three tips to make my marriage better. Give me financial wisdom, so I can spend more but worry less. But you should know this is not what Jesus came to offer us. He did not come to make your life better, He came to make it new. And new is greater than better. And the way Jesus wants to make us better is to make new...new creations. But just as all “new creatures”, we have to learn how to do this new life. And most of what we need to learn is not a new belief. We need a new way to do our lives. And that will take a lot of practice. So welcome to "A Long Obedience in the Same Direction" as we learn from Jesus how to love God by loving, serving, forgiving, etc., each other.
The Psalms! What are they? Why are they important? How can we better study them? Emma Dotter is joined with Watermark Worship Leader Jon Abel as he explains that the Psalms give us permission to pour out our hearts to God. These passages are not sugar-coated, but raw emotion before the Lord, and reading them allows us to into the journal of people who followed God before us. "Is God good? I know he loves the people around me, but does he love me the same? Sometimes the questions feel louder than the belief in me, what do I do with that?" These questions are common to the Christian journey of faith and our guest today, Stacey Tafao, discusses how vital the lost art of spiritual formation is to our lives. Learn how sometimes the question isn't "What is the answer to this?" as it is "Who is God for you in this moment?" Today we are joined by Stacey Tafao. She is the Pastor of Spiritual Formation and Community at Fellowship Church in Knoxville, TN. Stacey joined us previously and told us her story for the episode A Life Reframed: Redeeming our Wounds.
