The pursuit and fulfillment of one's life purpose can significantly impact many areas of their life, especially for those in leadership roles. So how does such a personal aspect affect the success of leaders in business and organizational settings? On this episode of the Survive & Thrive podcast, host Jennifer Ayres is joined by guest Robb Holman, CEO of global leadership consultancy Holman International. Robb has leadership expertise as an executive coach, global keynote speaker, best-selling author of three leadership books, and host of his podcast "Inside Out Leadership." Together, Robb and Jennifer share their thoughts on transformational leadership and the importance of purpose for leaders in the workplace. How Does Leader's Purpose Affect the Organization?Introducing Robb Holman (00:21) Our host Jen introduces guest speaker Robb Holman, an internationally recognized and sought-after leadership professional. Robb has honed his skills in developing authentic relationships and supporting people in their paths to success by applying his Inside Out leadership philosophy and principles. Leader's Purpose and the Organization (5:55) How does the leader's purpose impact the organization? Jen and Robb discuss ways that leaders aligning with their purpose can help them find a sense of direction and positively affect the individuals they lead. Things to Consider to Determine Personal Purpose (7:28) Robb believes that when we truly understand or awaken to embrace our uniqueness and individual identity, we can better understand our purpose. Robb lists five practical areas that he believes leaders should consider to help them determine their purpose and embrace who they are. Purpose Before Goals and Accomplishments (10:34) People often prioritize their goals and accomplishments over their life purpose to achieve a sense of success and fulfillment. However, Robb explains why he believes that pursuing one's purpose should supersede everything else in life. Where to Start? (18:26) The first step in the journey toward aligning with your purpose is ensuring that your personal core values, strengths, passions, life, milestones, and gifts match how you live your life. Consistency, Intentionality, and Gratitude (22:21) According to Robb, consistency and intentionality are critical to leading others with passion, purpose, and enthusiasm. Additionally, living authentically and developing an attitude of gratitude can positively impact yourself, your team, and your organization. Meditation and Other Lifestyle Techniques (27:52) Robb and Jen speak on the many ways that people can work on rewiring their brains to adopt a more grateful and healthy perspective, which can lead to greater productivity. Human Beings Not Human Doings (30:07) So how can leaders implement these practices to help their team and organizations not just survive but also thrive? Robb and Jen discuss the importance of connecting with, valuing, and encouraging their team members. Links mentioned:https://www.concinnityus.com/ (Concinnity - Website)

Robb Holman is a thought-provoking global keynote speaker, and the founder and CEO of Holman International, a global leadership consultancy. In 2022, he was named as one of the Top 30 World's Leadership Gurus. He is also the founder of Meeting House Ministries, and a best-selling author whose work has been featured in Inc, Forbes, and Fast Company. Robb's most recent book, Move the Needle: How Inside Out Leaders Influence Organizational Culture, takes a deep dive into why we must prioritize people over procedures to get better results. He is Marcel Schwantes' guest this week on Love In Action. Though many of us have lived through some kind of trauma, many of us don't have the mindset or awareness to work on healing the hurt that came from these traumatic events, Robb claims. “The trauma manifests itself in things like fear, shame, guilt, or grief that we haven't dealt with, and we carry that through our lives, [which] impacts how we lead people and our relationships with others.” [8:35] “The greatest dreams, accomplishments, and goals come out of [a] place of genuine community; we have to get past the [notion] that asking for help is weak,” Robb advises. “Asking for help is an act of vulnerability that some people can't [bring themselves to do],” Marcel adds. “[In a previous episode], Ken Blanchard said that people aren't willing to be vulnerable leaders because of ego; if it's not your true self, you are leading through arrogance and not authenticity.” [11:09] “We've been given our gifts, our skill sets, our personality, and our life experience as a gift to be used to benefit other people,” Robb says. “We [need] to get out of our own way and channel our significance and uniqueness to serve other people.” [15:02] There are many ways to serve, but whichever path you choose, make sure that you serve your team members personally and professionally. Are you spending time on a consistent and intentional basis with your team members? Do you know what makes them come alive? Do you know their hobbies, interests, and life milestones? You must commit to the process of learning these things, Robb shares. [19:01] Leaders often make decisions based on their gut, Robb claims. Undoubtedly, having the facts and the truth is important, but how do you make the right choice when the facts are pointing in one direction and your gut is leading you to the other? “The accuracy of going with your gut goes up drastically when your team members [focus] on their areas of expertise,” he comments. He explains why. [24:54] “Servant leadership is about getting under a team member only to elevate them above you… In my estimation, the greatest and most effective leaders are ones that get out of the way [of recognition]; they're looking to serve faithfully through guidance, encouragement, correction, and love,” Robb remarks. [35:46] Marcel asks Robb why leaders prioritize processes, procedures, and policies over people. “We want quick fixes,” Robb replies. “We want to reach the goals yesterday ... But I believe that slow is the new fast. With anything [that's] great and long-lasting, we need to slow down in order to learn what speeding up is all about.” [39:13] Robb talks about leaving a legacy. “When we start with the end in mind and re-engineer this thing, we could be much more intentional about the people we spend time with, and the reasons behind that. In the first place, I think we give too much attention to things that don't matter.” [46:50] The more we practice servant leadership in and out of the home, the smoother we will lead in service within our sphere of influence in the workplace, our culture, and society, Robb affirms. Robb Holman is a life-long serial entrepreneur and the CEO of Holman International, a global leadership consultancy. He’s also the author of the best-selling book, Lead the Way. Today, Jesse and Robb talk leadership done differently. “Light yourself on fire with passion and people will come from miles to watch you burn.” - Robb Holman Robb Holman - What’s Firing Him Up? Robb is a successful entrepreneur, speaker, coach, author and man of passion. His greatest passion is his family. Watching his wife and kids do what they love and being able to help and inspire them to do what they love, is what fires Robb up. The inspiration he gives to leaders is the same he gives to his family. He doesn’t like to categorize his time. He doesn’t put on his work hat or his family hat. To Robb, that’s tiring and unhealthy and causes undue stress. He views his life as one wheel with many spokes. He is whoever he is wherever he goes. There’s an ease and expectancy to it. He’s free to be himself and feels liberating to Robb. “Live a life of intentional gratitude.” - Robb Holman Self-Discovery Today so many people are into self-help they think if I could just be like this person or that person, I’d be a better me. Robb sees this as a fallacy and a huge waste of energy. Stop trying to make a better you or compare yourself to others. Robb challenges you to channel that energy into defining the seeds of greatness that are already in you. To Robb, this is what authenticity is really all about. “We need to learn and be aware about the importance of going after the one.” - Robb Holman on focusing and being present Final Four What have you done differently in your life to stand out? “Live a passionate life. When you live a passionate life, you are going to catch other people on fire and allow them to live more passionate lives too.” What makes someone stand out in business or in life? “Live a life of intentional gratitude. Have a positive attitude and outlook of yourself and others and of this world.”   What’s the best advice you’ve received? “You can only give when you got. Put yourself in a position to receive the good things in life the more of those powerful things you can give.” How do you want to be remembered? “An individual who lived a life on purpose and helped others discover why they exist on the planet.” To hear how Robb Holman breaks down his time and is able to start each day in control and on a positive note, download and listen to the show! Many times people try to lead Creative Warriors from the outside. They offer us material bonuses, or things that just aren't satisfying. Creatives, though, chase purpose and fulfillment. That means we need to start at the heart, start with passions, and work our way from the inside out. Ultimately that means we should be working on our strengths. We should dedicate ourselves to what we are not only good at, but what we love doing. Let other people who are better than us in other areas work on our weaknesses. The goal is to find our joy in work, which is something that goes much much deeper than happiness. When we find this joy, it lights the fire of the people around us. It motivates them to work harder and find their joy in life. It's like they say, success breeds success. On this episode of the Creative Warriors Podcast we are joined by Robb Holman.
