In this episode of The Art of Accomplishment, Brett and Joe take us on a poignant journey through the inevitability of death and the profound ways it shapes the experience of life. At the center of their conversation is Brett's brother, facing a terminal diagnosis, and the extraordinary lessons his life—and the process of his dying—have imparted.Through anecdotes of BASE jumping, near-death experiences, and profound loss, Brett and Joe explore the paradox of mortality: the closer you are to death, the more vividly you taste life.Brett and Joe examine:The power of mortality: How facing the truth of our impermanence can compress life into moments of unparalleled sweetness. The freedom in letting go: Why the stories we tell ourselves about success, identity, and purpose often crumble in the face of death.A life well lived: Brett reflects on his brother's choice to "dive into his family" and redefine what it means to truly live.Lessons from the edge: Stories of BASE jumping and near-death experiences that reveal the peace and clarity often found in moments of extreme vulnerability. The opportunity of goodbye: How acknowledging the fleeting nature of life can lead to deeper, more meaningful connections. As the conversation unfolds, a clear and steady message emerges: death, far from being an endpoint, is a profound teacher. It forces us to confront what matters most, stripping away the trivial and leaving only the raw truth of our existence.Send us your questions on Twitter, through our website, or in our Circle community! Fat-Burning Man by Abel James (Video Podcast): The Future of Health & Performance
Do you feel a constant pressure to optimize every aspect of your life? What if hyper-optimization protocols actually do more harm than good? The glorification of hustle culture has given many of us the nagging feeling that no matter how much we do or accomplish, it's never quite enough. Living in a cloud of frantic, urgent, reactive energy can even cause us to lose sight of who we are and why we're working so hard. If you want to reclaim your time, energy and purpose in life, you need to rebel against cultural norms and conditioning that does not serve you. You'll be in good company. Studies have shown that no matter their field or area of expertise, peak performers share a unique characteristic: they take time for complete rest and recovery. So when was the last time you created space for rest, or experienced the unexpected joys of under-committing and doing nothing for a minute? If your identity is in any way defined by over-achievement, hyper-optimization, perfectionism, or an obsession with productivity, this episode is for you. And listen, I may be behind the microphone, but I'm just as guilty of all of this tomfoolery as the rest of you! Today, we're here with Israa Nasir, a New York City-based psychotherapist, author, and the founder of WellGuide—a digital community for mental health awareness. Israa's new book, "Toxic Productivity" is strong medicine for anyone who's ever felt the pressure to be constantly busy, constantly achieving, and constantly proving their worth. In this episode with Israa, you'll hear: Why hyper-optimization protocols often do more harm than good Why chasing and achieving the next big win can eventually lead to feeling more empty and disconnected than ever before How to break free from the constant pressure to achieve and optimize every aspect of your life How to build meaningful relationships in a hyperconnected but lonely world And much more… Read the show notes: https://fatburningman.com/israa-nasir-why-hyper-optimization-protocols-do-more-harm-than-good/ Go to https://www.israanasir.com/ to get Israa Nasir's new book, "Toxic Productivity" Join the Abel James' Substack channel: https://abeljames.substack.com/ Listen and support the show on Fountain: https://fountain.fm/show/6ZBhFATsjzIJ3QVofgOH Watch on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/fatburningman Like the show on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/fatburningman Follow on X: https://x.com/abeljames Click here for your free Fat-Burning Kit: http://fatburningman.com/bonus

Today's show deals almost entirely with a story whose seismic impact across the Left and the Legacy/mainstream media cannot be understated. If there was still any lingering doubt about the media being nothing more than the propaganda wing of the Democrat party, this story is the final nail in their coffin. On Sunday, seemingly out of nowhere, Joe Biden released a statement indicating he was giving his son, Hunter, a full Federal pardon. What's interesting in the pardon is for any and all crimes committed between January 01, 2014 through December 01, 2024. It just so happens that Joe Biden was given the Ukraine portfolio to manage as then Vice President in February of 2014 and Hunter would begin serving on the board of Burisma by May of 2014. But, while some in the media are desperate to make it look like it was only about his tax evasion and gun felonies, others on the Left are outraged over the talking-point Biden just handed to Trump and his allies. We go through several examples to show how there is a massive fracture within the party. We close with a look at the current Designated Liar, Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) trying to pretend there is no weaponization of the FBI and the DOJ, while also mocking the selection of Kash Patel to head the FBI. We close with even more bad news for Kamala Harris's loss on November 5. Not only does it look like she now spent more than $2.1 billion on her loss, but she did something that hasn't been done since 1932. Harris is the first candidate since Herbert Hoover who did not flip a single county in the United States of America. Sermon Overview You can build your life on what Luke says about what God has accomplished through Jesus.1. Luke's content is God's accomplishment. (v. 1)2. Luke's sources are reliable. (v. 2)3. Luke's method is rigorous. (v. 3)4. Luke's purpose is our certainty. (v. 4)Digging Deeper Read Luke 1:1-41. As a church, we are on the front edge of an in-depth look at the Gospel According to Luke that will likely take us into the year 2026. How do you feel about that? How familiar would you say you are with Luke? What are you looking forward to in this series? 2. What does Luke tell us his book will be?3. In reference to Luke 1:1, Pastor Brett stated that “Luke's content is God's accomplishment.” What did he mean by that? What are “...the things accomplished among us” (v.1)? 4. The Gospel According to Luke shows us what God in Christ has accomplished for you and me. What aspect of what God has done for you through his Son are you most grateful for? Why? 5. Pastor Brett helped us see from verse 3 that “Luke's method is rigorous.” Where do we see that in the text? Why is this worth noting? 6. Why did Luke write his book (vs. 4)?7. How would you respond to someone who says, “The Gospels were just stories made up by random people”?8. Can genuine believers have doubts (i.e. lack certainty)? What might be some of the things God wants to get done in our hearts with regard to our lingering doubts and questions? What might it look like for us to care for one another well in this regard? Everyday we may feel negative responses to the world around us. We may spend so much time obsessed with 'healing' that we forget to enjoy ourselves with life. Despite hardships, we can actually cultivate emotional fulfillment. In this course, we will go through an approach to start feeling and increase the intensity of more positive emotions. This includes:- learning about the 6 emotions of fulfillment- learning about the 6 actions that cultivate each emotion- how to best structure the practice of living these emotionsThe Background To Understand Your MindA quick introduction to how the mind develops, the 2 states of thinking, and then the purpose of this course. The fact that this course is aimed at helping you to cultivate internal resources to be able to truly connect with all your experiences.Emotion Number 1: Joy (action = play)In this lesson, we go over the first emotion necessary to cultivate those mental frames that help us to see the world differently. The lesson describes the emotion, the action connected with it, and the journal questions, and also gives some examples of what may stop us from experiencing this emotion more.Emotion Number 2: Curiosity (action = explore)In this lesson, we go over my favorite of the emotions necessary to cultivate those mental frames that help us see the world differently. As per usual, the lesson describes the emotion, the action connected with it, and the journal questions, and also gives some examples of what may stop us from experiencing this emotion more.Emotion Number 3: Appreciation (action = savor)The third emotion necessary to see the world reframed is here! It is close to gratitude but I think by distinguishing it with some differences, we can get a better result. Emotional description, the action, the journal questions and examples of what may stop us from experiencing this emotion more, are all here.Emotion Number 4: Connection (action = sharing)Emotion number 4's description, common blocks, action steps, and journal prompts are all here. In this lesson, we go over the more social of all the emotions necessary to cultivate those mental frames that help us to see the world in a different way.Emotion Number 5: Accomplishment (action = challenge)In this lesson, we go over the emotion most similar to the concept of 'flow states'. It's important to consider that this emotion helps us to reframe stress as something to seek out in controlled ways, rather than seeing it as something to avoid or remove from our lives. The lesson describes the emotion, the action connected with it, the journal questions and also gives some examples of what may stop us from experiencing this emotion more.Emotion Number 6: Excitement (action = look forward to)In this lesson, we go over the sixth and final emotion. This emotion is all about breaking the monotony of routine and approaching life as something that can feed us energy! It can really be complimented by emotions 3 and 4 if used in the right way. Listen to the story I give as an example and you may find yourself re-examining things in your life too.How To Start Your Application Of Positive EmotionsThis lesson goes over some ideas of how to implement what we have gone over. The three actions I recommend in order to prompt our thoughts to raise the automated awareness of these emotions. Another tool discussed is about how to progress with your progress.Thank you for being a premium member. This is a public episode. Adam Gopnik's newest book was released in April 2024 called All That Happiness Is: Some words on what Matters and takes a look at our society's endless obsession with Striving. Gopnik says society is obsessed with achievement. Young people are pushed toward the “best” school they can get into. Adults push themselves toward the highest-paying, most prestigious jobs, seeking promotions and public recognition. The result is not so much a rat race as a rat maze, with no way out. Except one: to choose accomplishment over achievement. A staff writer for the New Yorker since 1986, Adam Gopnik was born in Philadelphia and raised in Montreal. His first essay in The New Yorker, "Quattrocento Baseball" appeared in May of 1986 and he served as the magazine's art critic from 1987 to 1995. That year, he left New York to live and write in Paris, where he wrote the magazine's “Paris Journal” for the next five years. He has written 14 books. In the past five years, Gopnik has engaged in many musical projects, working both as a lyricist and libretto writer. Future projects include a new musical with Scott Frankel. Heather and Adam talk about true happiness, and feeling a true sense of accomplishment vs constantly striving to achieve, the society we live in and much more, including the origins of Central Park in NYC.
