How many people can say they've never worked for anyone else? Selling eggs door-to-door at 14 years old began a lifetime of self-employment for speaker and small business consultant Jeffrey Shaw. Jeffrey helps self-employed and small business owners look through different lenses to build strategies and compose the often-chaotic pieces of life and business into sustainable success. Jeffrey grew up in a small, rural town in New York. Jeffrey's father worked for IBM, and his mother ran her own hair salon. While in high school, Jeffrey developed an interest in photography. He was introduced to it by his father, who had built a darkroom in their home. Jeffrey's talent as a photographer began to emerge, yet when he graduated from high school, he did not feel a sense of direction, so he took a gap year. The following year he decided to attend photography school. For four decades, Jeffrey has served generations of families in his highly successful portrait photography business. Then, he reached a point where he wanted to do something different. He had heard about the coaching profession, found it appealing, and enrolled in a training program to develop those skills. Since then, he has added speaker, author, and podcast host to his professional titles. He has retained a small number of photography clients as he holds a deep value for the relationships he has nurtured over the years. In 2021, Jeffrey created and launched the Self-Employed Business Institute to educate and support entrepreneurs in growing their businesses. His two books, The Self-Employed Life: Business and Personal Development Strategies That Create Sustainable Success and LINGO: Discover Your Ideal Customer's Secret Language and Make Your Business Irresistible have been smash successes. Jeffrey is currently working on his third book. Stay tuned! In this week's Work From The Inside Out podcast, learn more about Jeffrey's journey: Jeffrey is the host of the top-rated podcast, The Self-Employed Life. The Self-Employed Life

Data is the not-so-secret tool to understand your target audience, the messaging that resonates with them, and how to find them. Executive coach Kent Vanho is here today to talk about how data can be used to scale a business, solve challenges, and make your marketing leakproof. He's developed a proven sales process, system, and machine that can drive client businesses to multi-six and seven-figure businesses. Kent left the corporate world after 17 years at Cisco. He then scaled his consulting firm to over $624,000 in annual recurring revenue. It only took him three months using his systems and strategies that we talk about today.   He is now on a mission to help other coaches, consultants, and service-based businesses scale beyond what they thought was possible. He teaches using systems and strategies that free up time and space for the important stuff. Some people think they don't like numbers and data and all the tedious analysis, but Kent says that some tools and platforms can help gather and analyze the data. We can do the work once and reap the rewards for a long time. He even refers to a data-driven business as leakproof marketing.   We go over what a data-driven business is and the importance of quantifying a problem to solve business challenges. Data is so helpful with decision-making. We may leverage our instinct to point us in the right direction, but the data confirms the direction we need to go. We talk about making sure your message resonates and starting with the proper foundation. When you have a system that collects feedback, you'll understand whether your message is working and see what your ideal customers tell you. Data can be a gold mine for making decisions, identifying customers, developing messaging that resonates, and getting noticed by those perfect customers.    And be sure to subscribe to The Self-Employed Life in Apple podcasts or follow us on Spotify or wherever you listen to podcasts so you don't miss an episode.   Everything you need can all be found at jeffreyshaw.com    Kent Vanho thank you so much for being here!   Remember, you might be in business FOR yourself but you are not in business BY yourself.  Be your best self. Giving someone a sincere compliment is a way to connect, praise, and build a relationship with that person. I don't mean in a phony kissing-up kind of way. I mean noticing and appreciating the exemplary work or behavior that this person has exhibited. If compliments are a form of praise and appreciation for our actions, why are we consistently bad at receiving compliments? The answer to that is somewhat complicated, but according to Christopher Littlefield, it has to do with four things. Compliments can take us by surprise, which causes us to freeze momentarily, find an explanation for what's happening, shift our perspective, and share our experiences.  According to Christopher, compliments are more about the giver than the receiver. This episode dives into how to give and receive compliments and why they are so crucial to creating connections and building relationships. Christopher Littlefield specializes in employee appreciation, recognition, and workplace culture. He is the founder of Beyond Thank You, an organization that helps increase employee engagement. He's trained thousands of leaders to understand what people need to be their best.  He is a regular contributor to Forbes and Harvard Business Review and the author of 75+Team Building Activities for Remote Teams: Simple Ways to Build Trust, Strengthen Communications, and Laugh Together, a book about building and engaging a team. We talk about the psychology of the power behind compliments. Christopher even shares an experience where the power of compliments helped resolve a workplace conflict. We talk about feeling valued, continuously building relationships, and the importance of focusing on progress. Christopher walks us through how and why to appreciate the recognition and how to give and receive compliments gracefully.  And be sure to subscribe to The Self-Employed Life in Apple podcasts or follow us on Spotify or wherever you listen to podcasts so you don't miss an episode. I've always thought I was a voracious reader, until I met Liz Scully. Trust me – you really need to hear how much she reads, and how she does it. We also discussed the joys of an audiobook, and how they help us get through books we wouldn't have attempted on paper.   After that, Liz introduced me to a business strategy book. Even if you aren't a business person, don't miss this conversation. “Lingo” is not really about business, but about psychology – why do we buy certain things? Why do we feel comfortable in certain places? Who do we think we are when we buy things? I learned a lot about business in this book, but even more than that, I felt like I learned a lot about myself.   Also, Liz is So. Damn. How do you feel about change? Change is something that happens to us every day. Historically, humans haven't adapted to change that well and didn't have to that much. Now, things have sped up drastically. The rate of change we are currently experiencing can be exhausting if we aren't wired to accept and deal with change. Change in technology, business, and consumer preferences continues to evolve at an unprecedented rate. Erika Andersen is here to talk about making our team change capable and rewiring for change. Erika is the author of Change from the Inside Out: Making You, Your Team, and Your Organization Change-Capable, a practical guide for us and our teams to thrive in an era of continual change. Erika is the founder of Proteus, a training and consulting firm that focuses on leader readiness. She is also a consultant and advisor to CEOs and top executives of several major corporations. She also speaks about leadership and business. She has authored several books about leadership and business strategies.  As small business owners and entrepreneurs, we all know how important it is to deal with change. We talk about how change is hard and why humans are hardwired to keep things the same. We talk about being change-capable, not filled with dread at the thought of change. Erika explains the change arc, our internal beliefs systems, and the mindset shifts necessary to embrace change as a step toward a more positive future. We also talk about concepts in her book, from change levers to the five stages of change.  And be sure to subscribe to The Self-Employed Life in Apple podcasts or follow us on Spotify or wherever you listen to podcasts so you don't miss an episode. What can it do for your business? We also talk about how storytelling is in our DNA as one of our most ancient forms of communication. What is the best way to build your brand, grow your business, or create change? It has a lot to do with whether you have influence or not. I'm not talking about being an “influencer” or influencing from the outside. I'm talking about what it takes to influence from within with the power of communication. My guest, Adam Stones, is the author of Influence: Powerful Communications, Positive Change, a communications playbook that guides readers through the five traits of influence.    Adam Stones is a writer and communications strategist who makes positive change and has an impact. His work focuses on strategy, brand-building, PR, and content creation. He helps entrepreneurs and changemakers build communication skills to make a more significant impact. He's a cyclist and dad and who takes that job very seriously. We talk about turning influence on its head by focusing on communication. It's easy to communicate but hard to connect. Connection is where the real change happens.   We talk about moving from a passive to an active mindset. We touch on the importance of being invested in the future and being powered by purpose. We talk about putting your why into everything you do. Adam walks us through the five core traits of influential communicators. We talk about storytelling and using the AIDA or attention, interest, desire, and action copywriting technique. We also talk about how useful it is to capture your story in a single sentence. Adam touches on his ten golden rules for behavioral change communication, the concept of OSEP or owned, shared, earned, paid, and so much more.     And be sure to subscribe to The Self-Employed Life in Apple podcasts or follow us on Spotify or wherever you listen to podcasts so you don't miss an episode.   Everything you need can all be found at jeffreyshaw.com    Adam Stones thank you so much for being here!   Remember, you might be in business FOR yourself but you are not in business BY yourself.  Be your best self. He shares real-life stories that helped ordinary brands and leaders create extraordinary results.  Gair is a former broadcaster who had an award-winning radio and television career in Canada. He's also shared conference stages with business icons like Richard Branson and Gene Simmons. He's here today to talk about Big Little Legends and how to create a story that can make your brand legendary. We unpack how brands become legendary. How did the Mona Lisa become so famous? The painting was stolen from the Louvre. All of the press created the fame this painting holds today. We talk about the story you are going to tell and also the story others will tell about you. Your story doesn't have to be about yourself. You can also use the seven plots of overcoming the monster, rags to riches, the quest, voyage and return, comedy, tragedy, and rebirth as filters to determine if your idea is a story. Who doesn't love the coffee business? In the US, the growth of coffee chains is fascinating. Michael J. McFall began his career with BIGGBY® COFFEE at the original store in East Lansing in 1996 as a minimum-wage barista. He's now co-CEO, and over the last twenty-two years, he and business partner Bob Fish have created one of America's excellent specialty coffee chains. They have over 250 stores open in 9 states. He's also the author of Grind: A No-bullsh*t Approach to Take Your Business from Concept to Cash Flow—a book about common sense strategies for turning a start-up idea into a positive cash flow business.    We talked about starting a new business and why the franchise model worked for them. Michael says that products don't usually sell themselves. You need to be willing to sell your product for as long as it takes. You've got to be obsessed with generating revenue. He's also involved in personal growth and development. As a leader, you need to meet your company where it needs you, not the opposite. We also talk about the importance of being able to compartmentalize when starting a business. We touch on impatience, enthusiasm, and the process of due diligence on yourself. We also learn incredible mission-critical things like the six-hour rule, where franchisees spend six hours a day on the front end for the first year.    Another fundamental premise in Grind is that looking through your business from a cost-cutting lens isn't advantageous to your growth and customer happiness. If you obsess over taking care of the customer, everything else takes care of itself. Making people happy and believing in what you do creates an opportunity to ask your customers to promote you. We also talk about avoiding complexity and not making things more complex than they need to be. Being self-employed can be exciting and fulfilling. It also can have ups and downs, especially when starting. That is why changing your thinking to an extended game plan can help alleviate some of the stress and uncomfortable moments. It also allows us to be more realistic about our projects and aspirations and prevent panic and throwing in the towel too soon. Dorie Clark is the bestselling author of Entrepreneurial You, Reinventing You, and Stand Out, named the #1 Leadership Book of the Year by Inc. magazine. Dorie is also a coach, consultant, keynote speaker, and executive education teacher. Her latest book, The Long Game: How to Be a Long-Term Thinker in a Short-Term World, is about long-term strategic thinking to create interesting, meaningful work and lives. This book is so appropriate now because the world needs to think long-term. Dorie shares her framework to help people strategically plan and persist. Frequently we underestimate how long something will take and risk giving up too soon.  Business can be a test of patience, but there comes a time when things start to click. It can be incredibly powerful when we get to this place of momentum. We talk about growth and the deception phase, where it feels like things aren't progressing, but they are. An example would be how a ten-year overnight success happens. We discuss what having a long game strategy, and high-level view entails. We discuss white space, focus where it counts, optimizing for interesting, extreme goals, and more. Dorie shares so many interesting insights on work and life.  And be sure to subscribe to The Self-Employed Life in Apple podcasts or follow us on Spotify or wherever you listen to podcasts so you don't miss an episode. He's also the author of Be Vigilant!: Strategies to Stop Complacency, Improve Performance, and Safeguard Success. Your Business and Relationships Depend on It. His book is relevant today because he talks about parallels of life, law enforcement, and business. He shares how being prepared and vigilant will not only prevent us from falling into the trap of complacency, but it will help us have a plan to fall back on when change and upheaval make things difficult. We have a heartfelt conversation about how to look beyond the mark and have a fallback plan.   We talk about the trap of complacency and how it can kill a business or put us in mortal danger. Len shares about the importance of vigilance and being ready and prepared when things get tough. It's easy to slip into complacency and overconfidence when things are going well, but turmoil and chaos invite vigilance. We talk about the importance of preparedness and optimism for entrepreneurs and how vital the decision-making process can be. Entrepreneurs have a lot on their plates. Unfortunately, ideas, worries, excitement, and whatever else is on our minds can carry over to our evenings and nights, sometimes keeping us up at night or causing restlessness. Even though mulling these thoughts over can sometimes result in breakthroughs, not getting proper sleep can take its toll and prevent us from being and doing our best. If you struggle with sleep or want to perform better, you will love today's conversation with Dr. Anne Bartolucci.  Dr. Anne Bartolucci is a licensed clinical psychologist and board-certified behavioral sleep medicine specialist. She is President and CEO of Atlanta Insomnia and Behavioral Health Services. She is also the author of Better Sleep for the Overachiever, which is about easing ambitious minds into a healthy, productive sleep pattern. Her goal is to help all of us achieve our waking dreams through better sleep.  Less sleep can make us less productive. Being conscientious can also create an environment where we get less sleep. We talk about hyperarousal or that feeling that won't let us fall asleep at the end of the day. Self-employed people often have so much going on that it's hard to shut off when bedtime rolls around. We dive into how to prevent these issues by making your daytime more productive to make your night more productive. Best practices don't always work for marketing. If you want to stand out and get noticed, don't keep doing what everyone else is doing. That's the advice from Mike Michalowicz, who is one of my favorite writers and my guest on today's show. Mike is the author of a string of popular entrepreneurial books, including Profit First, The Pumpkin Plan, Clock Work, Fix This Next, and his latest book, Get Different. By his 35th birthday, Mike had founded and sold two multi-million dollar companies. He then became a small business angel investor and lost it all.  Mike has since devoted his life to discovering and sharing the very best small business entrepreneurial strategies. Thousands of companies have used his advice to drive profit, run on automatic, and determine what moves to make next. We discuss some of the concepts in his new book on how to market and get noticed. We talk about how and why we need to be different from other businesses in our field when marketing. If we want to share our products, gifts, or knowledge with the world, we need to stand out. It's our responsibility to do so.  We talk about what holds people back and the importance of being different from your competitors to get noticed. We talk about sharing what makes you unique, not being too outrageous, and how showing weakness can be appealing. It's also essential to get relevant data and enough data to understand what is working. Mike shares his system of DAD or differentiate, attract, and direct.
