Welcome back to the Video Store Podcast. It is a complete coincidence that today, on 4/20, I am taking a look at some of the best “stoner comedies” of all time. While I personally “just say no,” I like celebrating 4/20 my own way — by revisiting films that are “high”ly recommended. In Up in Smoke (1978), Cheech and Chong's first film, Pedro (Cheech Marin) picks up a hitchhiking “Man” (Tommy Chong) and the two of them spend the next 90 minutes criss-crossing both southern California and Mexico searching for increasingly strong strains of dope. Pulling material from their multiple gold and platinum comedy albums, Up in Smoke is considered to be the godfather of all stoner comedies. Half Baked (1998), co-written by and starring Dave Chappelle, is considered to be the hand-off between two generations of stoners. In the film, lifelong stoners and best friends Thurgood Jenkins (Chappelle), Scarface, and Brian devise a plan to bail their bestie Kenny out of jail after he is arrested for accidentally murdering a police officer's horse. Despite being considered a classic of the genre, Chappelle promptly and publicly disowned the film after its release due to changes Universal forcded him to make to the script. Featuring over a dozen comedians and musicians from Steven Wright and Jim Breuer to Snoop Dogg and Willie Nelson, Half Baked remains a full classic. Dazed and Confused (1993) takes place in 1976 on the last day of school in a small Texas town. This Richard Linkletter film follows dozens of students as they prepare to escape the confines of high school and enter adulthood, whether they have a plan in place or not. Similar to movies like American Graffiti and The Breakfast Club, Dazed and Confused is a coming of age story that reminds us regardless of a story's setting, some high school experiences remain timeless. Dazed and Confused is better than okay; it's “All right, all right, all right.” In The Big Lebowski (1998) we learn what happens when thugs break into a man's apartment, dunk his head into the toilet, demand money for unknown reasons, and relieve themselves on his rug — not just any run, but one that “really tied the room together, man.” The recipient of this injustice is “The Dude,” a laid-bac stoner who, with help from his bowling partners and friends Walter and Donny, discover the he — Jeffrey “The Dude” Lebowski — share a name with another, much richer business man. Convinced the “Big” Lebowski was the intended target of this break-in, the Dude is coaxed into confronting the Big Lebowski and demanding compensation for his damaged rug. Written and directed by the Coen Brothers (Raising Arizona, Fargo), before long The Dude (Jeff Bridges), Walter (John Goodman) and Donny (Steve Buscemi) have stumbled into a kidnapping for ransom plot that will leave one person missing a toe, one person dead, and a lot of people confused. A cult-classic where every scene is memorable and every line is quotable. Best watched with a White Russian in hand. The Video Store would like to apologize for the snack bar being completely depleted this week. Someone must have had the munchies. If you're like me and don't, uh, “partake,” feel free to celebrate 4/20 with me by revisiting some of the best stoner movies of all time. Thanks for reading Video Store Podcast! Episode No. 753 features artist Delilah Montoya and author Mario T. García. Montoya's work is featured in three major exhibitions around the US this season. The Albuquerque Museum is featuring "Delilah Montoya: Activating Chicana Resistance," the first retrospective of Montoya's forty-year career. The exhibition, which was curated by Josie Lopez, is on view through May 3. A valuable catalogue was published by University of New Mexico Press and the Albuquerque Museum. Amazon and Bookshop offer it for about $32. Two significant historical group shows also foreground Montoya's work. At the Sheldon Museum of Art, University of Nebraska, Lincoln, Montoya is featured in "Hyphen American: Intersections of Identity." The exhibition, which pointedly rejects increasing right-wing claims that the US is, or should be an ethnostate, presents the many ways identity is presented and interrogated in our art. The excellent exhibition catalogue, which was published in the four languages most commonly spoken in Lincoln (English, Spanish, Vietnamese, and Arabic), was published by the museum. "Hyphen American" was curated by Christian Wurst and is on view through July 5. Artists in the exhibition who have been guests on The Modern Art Notes Podcast include Radcliffe Bailey, Binh Danh, Catherine Opie, Alec Soth, and Renée Stout. The Riverside (Calif.) Art Museum and The Cheech Marin Center for Chicano Art & Culture are showing Montoya in "Chicano Camera Culture: A Photographic History, 1966–2026." The exhibition shows how 45 artists have used their camera as a tool of representation, empowerment, and change over the past 60 years. It is the first major survey of Chicano/a/x lens-based image making. "Chicano Camera Culture" was curated by Elizabeth Ferrer. It's on view at the Riverside Art Museum through July 5, and at The Cheech through September 6. The excellent catalogue was published by The Cheech and is distributed by University of Washington Press. It is available from Amazon for $44. Artists in the exhibition who have been guests on The Modern Art Notes Podcast include Christina Fernandez and Ken Gonzales-Day. Montoya is one of the major figures in the development of Chicana art in the United States. Her community-oriented work addresses colonialism, identity, land, feminine power, and justice. It is held by museums such as the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the New Mexico Museum of Art. García is the author of "Rupert García: The Making of an American Artist, a Testimonio," which was just published by Rutgers University Press. It is the first biography of the Chicano artist Rupert García. The book, which is informed by 50 hours of interviews conducted over 30 years, is illustrated by 80 artworks. It is immediately the major volume on García's career. Amazon and Bookshop offer it for about $31-33. Instagram: Delilah Montoya, Tyler Green. Air date: April 9, 2026.

In February 1975, Walter Bolonis caught a 15-pound largemouth bass through the ice in Southeastern Massachusetts, setting a seemingly unbreakable state record. Yet, many questions surround this catch, questions that professional bass fisherman and podcaster Mark Burgess of Big East Bass Fishing has been trying to answer. In this episode, Jimmy and Cheech sit down with Mark and discuss what it's like being a pro bass angler from Massachusetts, the story behind that 15-pound bass, and whether or not it could ever be broken legitimately. In this wild episode of the MADcast Podcast, Big Dave and Producer Russ sit down with the Ayala brothers — Robert and Javier Ayala — for a conversation that goes everywhere and nowhere all at once (in the best possible way). The guys dive into how Robert and Javier first got started in fitness and the strange, roundabout paths that eventually led them to meeting Big Dave. In a twist that feels straight out of a sitcom, Robert and Dave even lived in Florida at the same time years ago but somehow never crossed paths — only to finally meet later in Austin, where they became great friends and regular gym training partners.Javier also makes sure everyone knows about his YouTube show “Javier on the Air.” In fact, he plugs it so many times that it might be worth turning this episode into a drinking game — take a shot every time you hear “Javier on the Air,” which you can watch right now on YouTube.Speaking of drinking, the crew cracks open a variety of beers during the episode — including one that might go down as one of the worst beers ever tasted in the 96 episodes of MADcast. It's absolutely disgusting, and you'll hear the guys do their best to power through it while trying not to gag. Thankfully, not every beer is a disaster, and the conversation turns to better brews, including the Ayala brothers' annual tradition of rating pumpkin beers on their YouTube channel and podcast. From there, the episode spirals into everything you'd expect from MADcast: beers, music, movies, Cheech & Chong references, gym talk, and plenty of laughs along the way.Fair warning — this one runs long. Sorry to our executive producer Lindsay, as the crew blows right past the 90-minute mark. But grab a drink, kick back, and enjoy the ride. This episode is a full-on barrel of monkeys. And don't forget — head over to inthecrew512.com and save 15% at checkout when you use promo code MADCAST.Thanks for listening and enjoy the show!

As America approaches its 250th anniversary, Season 5 of Fritanga looks in three directions: past, present, and future. We begin with someone whose life spans all three. The legendary comedian, actor, author, and art collector Cheech Marin!  For over five decades, Cheech has helped expand who gets to be visible and heard in American culture. Born in South Central Los Angeles, Cheech left the United States during the Vietnam War era and met Tommy Chong in Vancouver. What they built together moved from underground comedy stages to national influence, blending satire, music, and lived experience in a way that reshaped American entertainment. In this conversation with our host, Antonio Tijerino, Cheech reflects on identity, reinvention, and belonging. They talk about growing up Mexican American in LA, about music as the rhythm behind comedy, about leaving America and returning to reshape it. From film to television to Disney animation to sold-out reunion tours decades later, Cheech shares what it takes to pivot without losing who you are. The conversation culminates in his work as a collector and advocate for Chicano art. What began in the 1980s as a personal commitment became national exhibitions and ultimately The Cheech Marin Center for Chicano Art and Culture, the first museum dedicated to Chicano art. For Cheech, institutions matter because they affirm presence. This episode is about who we have always been in relation to this country, and what it means to make that presence permanent.   Follow The Cheech Center:Instagram -  @theCheechCenterTikTok - @theCheechCenterFacebook - @theCheechCenter Support The Cheech in their effort to uplift diverse artists:https://bit.ly/thecheechlegacy   WATCH THIS EPISODE TODAY: https://hispanicheritage.org/fritanga/ FOLLOW: @FritangaPodcastCONNECT: Fritanga@HispanicHeritage.org   TEAM: Host: Antonio Tijerino Executive Producer: Antonio Caro Senior Producer: Connor Coleman Producer: Ambrose Davis

On Friday's show: Famous actors are all around in New York and Los Angeles. It's a bit of a bigger deal when they roll through Houston. And when they do, it's usually not to promote a television show or film. The motivation is usually something else entirely. On this special edition of Houston Matters, we revisit conversations with four actors who came to town with something on their minds and shared those messages with us (along with talking about their lives and careers). We discuss mental health with actors Sean Astin and Joe Pantoliano. We review the fascinating life and career of one-time Houston Art Car Parade grand marshal Cheech Marin of Cheech and Chong fame. And we chat with actor, comedian, game show host, and reality TV judge Howie Mandel about his career, but also about -- we kid you not -- controlling cholesterol.

Robert Farid KarimiThe "inbetween" is often ignored. It is also the juicy territory that this week's guest, comedian, chef, poet, educator, and activist Robert Farid Karimi has been investigating over the last couple of decades. like many of our guests Robert, who is also known as Mero Cocinero, Farid Mercury, the Peoples Chef, and even in some quarters, Betty Crocker's radical heir apparent, is not easily pegged. In the conversation that follows we explore some of the stories, ideas, and questions that animate his work. How can humor become a bridge in a conflict-ridden community? What is the role of the fool and gossip in the post truth era? What can community organizers learn from Mel Brooks and Cheech and Chong. Along the way we hear great stories and have a little fun.Delicious QuotesI feel for people who feel that they themselves are bridges because this, it's not easy work to hold, two sides of earth so that others can cross. A lot of times people they're not appreciating everything it took to keep everybody up.…we say in Spanish, "chesme", gossip. And talking about how immigrants, how we transmit the information, especially when you come from cultures, where the official news is being controlled like Iran and Guatemala, like gossip is powerful. Chesme is powerful. So, I became this bridge by valuing the words of others as truth,Humor to me was never about insulting or bringing others down. Humor for me was always, "How can you lift up the room? We've had a bad day. Why you gotta be a downer?" And I think growing up, that's why I valued it so much. That's why it became part of my toolkit. They brought me in to General Mills, …and had me cooking where the Betty Crocker kitchen ladies cook. They stayed. The women who had worked all day stayed because they wanted to have a good time and laugh. My mother still says that's my best gig I've ever had cause I'm at the home of freaking Betty Crocker.I changed Acting One so that it would incorporate play. I want them to start seeing their bodies as this thing, that's taking it all in and that they are not just actors. They are not just performers they are in the in-between. They are storytellers. And to make these stories, they need to understand their relationship to the system of life. And the final of the classes, they get to make fun of the class. They get to use all the skills to make fun of anything I've done, because the rationale is for me, humor is a great way to show that because you got to know what you know, to make fun of it.I couldn't just walk into a community and go, “I'm going to save you all because I'm a person of color. Who's funny.” No. I had to go back to the kid that was listening, ...to the folks in the community. ..Then I could see how I could be of service.Notable MentionsMero Cocinero, Farid Mercury, the Peoples Chef: Just three of Mr. Karimi's many alter egos.Change the Story / Change the World: This podcast, a Chronicle of Art & Community TransformationAfrika Bambaataa: Lance Taylor (born in April 17, 1957), also known as Afrika Bambaataa (/ˌæfrɪkə...

"Forever Shining" In 1976 brothers Tony and Chip Kinman founded the legendary Carlsbad punk band The Dills, who in just four short years crammed their music CV with highlights. Before they disbanded in 1980, The Dils had recorded classics like "Class War" and Mr. Big" opened for the Clash and appeared in Cheech and Chong's Up In Smoke. The Kinmans went on to form Rank and File, who are considered by many to be one of the first cowpunk bands around. Rank and FIle's rootsy stomp and melodic muscle powered them through three perfect albums--Sundown, Long Gone Dead and their self-titled 19897 swansong. The Kinmans had an uncanny ability to read the cultural room before anyone else--they were hardcore before it hit the suburbs and they were cowpunk before it was cool and with their next band Blackbird, they were techno metal before Korn and Linkin Park shirts at Hot Topic. The Kinmans went on to play in bands like Cowboy Nation and Ford Madox Ford and sadly, Tony Kinman died in 2018. Which brings us to KInman's self-titled Kinman's new album. A stirring song cycle filled with acoustic numbers, Tex-Mex techno, the undulating rhythms and "Me And Tony" a streetwise tribute to a life in music with his brother, Kinman's new record sounds like nobody else. It's filled with unexpected sonic flourishes, heartfelt emotional ruminations, great storytelling and devastating beauty. It's bold and brilliant work. https://intheredrecords.com/collections/chip-kinman/products/chip-kinman-s-t-lp www.bombshellradio.com (http://www.bombshellradio.com) www.stereoembersmagazine.com (http://www.stereoembersmagazine.com) www.alexgreenbooks.com (http://www.alexgreenbooks.com) IG + BLUESKY: @emberspodcast EMAIL: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com (mailto:editor@stereoembersmagazine.com)

My guest this week is Josh Jenkins [43:59] of Scientific Anglers and originally I wanted to interview him just on knotless leaders—their design, how they are made, and how to modify them. But we soon took an interesting sidetrack into line/leader connections and also a new product he's discovered for fixing cracks in fly line coating so you don't have to buy a new line if your current line is damaged. I get many questions on both leaders and fly lines so I think this one will be interesting to everyone.   In the Fly Box this week, one listener chides me for being reluctant to share my opinion on questions, plus these questions (where I do share my opinion!) Is there a single weight rod I can take to Belize to fish for bonefish, permit, and tarpon? What were your personal experiences with the old Power Matrix rod, and which one in the current Orvis lineup is most similar? I inherited some 1980s-era fly lines in new condition. Are they still good, and how do the tapers compare to modern lines? Can you explain the terms "skating a fly" and "swinging a fly" and explain briefly how to do them? Is there any schedule for your tie-offs with Tim Flagler and Cheech? I love my Ultralight Waders but I worry  they won't last as long as other waders. What is the proper way to store fly lines for an extended time period? I am a steelheader that wants to fish for trout. Can you skate flies for trout? And when fishing streamers should I swing them or strip them? What is the origin of the term "gin clear" Why can't I find a fast-sinking clear line?

My guest this week is Joe Cermele [40:00], who you may know from his podcast "Cut and Retie", or from his work over the years at Field & Stream as a writer and videographer. Joe loves hunting big trout, and one of his favorite ways of fishing for them is night fishing with mouse flies. Joe is always fun and informative and I know you'll enjoy this one. In the Fly Box this week, we have some especially interesting questions, including: If I get a 10-foot 5-weight rod for nymph fishing and tight line fishing, will I sacrifice anything when I want to fish with dry flies or streamers? I keep breaking off large carp when they head for structure. Should I use something different than a surgeon's knot? Where do I find past live fly-tying videos and your tie-offs with Tim Flagler and Cheech? A listener who is also an aquatic toxicologist explains why smoke from fires may be deleterious to our rivers and lakes. What can I do to keep googly eyes from falling off my streamers? And do streamers even need eyes to be effective? Hiking the Appalachian Trail, should I take my 7 ½ foot 3-weight or 9-foot 5-weight? Why did a hybrid rainbow/cutthroat I played quickly turn belly-up? Do you think the fly-fishing culture should reflect more deeply on the morality of catch-and-release fishing? Do you have any suggestions for fishing hatches after dark? I typically high-stick with a dry fly and listen for the rise. When water warms up, do trout go into faster water to take advantage of the higher oxygen content?
