Focus Discussion of the Week: When you shop, do you look for a video on the product to understand it better? Are you looking for someone to walk you through a task? If you are anything like us, you do. What that really means is you are looking for a story. A story of what that product or service can do for you. Or better put, the emotion of that product and service. Jon Sherman from VideoCity Productions joins Matt and Mollie to discuss the idea of "Show Me, Don't Tell Me" in New Home Marketing. On this week's episode, I talk to Melissa Denizard, a native of Haiti, who is a 20-year-old activist, documentarian, and senior at Babson College. She shares the challenges of being an activist and an organizer and we talk about vulnerability and feeling comfort in discomfort as well as the loneliness epidemic that is facing so many young people. As an activist, Melissa uses her many talents, including public speaking, film, and the written word, to bring attention to the intersections of race, gender, and social class in the United States’ political framework. Melissa runs a blog that focuses on the intersection of race, gender, and social class in pop culture and politics. In 2018, her YouTube video, Unbraid with Me: Is Hair Political? was featured on Brut Media and Refinery29. Later that year, her blog post, "Don't Tell Me to Smile: A Commentary on Harassment in the Service Industry" was adapted into a TEDx talk for TEDxTarrytown. As an alumna of the Young People For Fellowship, Melissa had the opportunity to expand upon her technological social venture Voice, which is an online platform for contemporary activists that aims to make digital organizing more accessible and efficient.. Partnered with Babson College, Melissa is also currently creating an initiative that will aim to help Flint, MI's entrepreneurs cultivate entrepreneurial skills to build wealth that will accumulate to help the city eventually emerge out of both the Flint Water Crisis and decades of poverty. You won't want to miss her honest self-reflection on growth and self-care and her insights on the ways we can use pop culture to analyze race, gender and cultural clashes.

Dads have emotions too, and sometimes those emotions make your eyes leak all over your face. It's nothing to be ashamed of, but it is something that makes you wonder: Are other dads out there letting their emotions all hang out? We chat with Christian Hayes, father of two, ex-rock star and current restauranteur star about emotional vulnerability. In this episode of Modern Dadhood, Marc and Adam catch up about the stinkiest smells from their kids, and the things that make them emotionally vulnerable dads.Guest Christian Hayes shares of his own vulnerabilities as the front man of hard rock band Sidecar Radio, as the owner of two businesses in a notoriously tough industry, and as a father of two young daughters. The episode wraps up with Modern Dadhood's homage to "Wait Wait... Don't Tell Me!" in a segment called "Did I Just Say That Out Loud?" where Marc and Adam share stories about ludicrous exclamations that came out of their mouths lately in the presence of their kids.Links:The Garrison, Yarmouth, MaineSidecar RadioWait Wait... We're back! Months later and with a new face/voice, but hey! We're back! And discussing meeting people where they are with STEM interest, STEM superhero Nalini Nadkarni, the science behind hauntings and the Captain Obvious reason the Houston Astros are called the Astros. Jamee is the latest co-host of what we now assume will be a rotating cast of characters, because logistics of coordinating guests and hosts can be a lot, you guys. This episode was recorded the week of Halloween, so we discussed the all-female space walk, Jamee's fondness for the "M" in STEM and Newton (who gave us way more than an apple falling on his head), and what may actually be going on if you think you're haunted. The infamous run-of-show on the dungeon whiteboard. If you haven't seen Nalini Nadkarni's TED talk, you should get on that, because she is an amazing pioneer and badass, and I was super-stoked to hear her on Wait Wait ... Don't Tell Me. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rN7VcY1f-1Q She uses a cross-bow. Like an actual superhero. Because she is. When we come to understand nature, we are touching the most deep, most important part of ourselves.- Nalini Nadkarni While we are on the topic of entomologists (nice segue, eh?), make sure you check out the unrelated entomologist who rated all the ant emojis last summer. Jamee explains how Isaac Newton helped us get out of the Dark Ages by inventing Calculus but maybe could have gotten us even further if he had used a little teamwork. Because I'm obsessed with scary things and it was Halloween, we also talked about last year's Netflix hit The Haunting of Hill House and the role black mold may have played in the Crain family ghosts. My phrase of the episode, by the way, was clearly "rabbit hole." In the spirit of what was then the season, we also discussed Roy the friendly ghost and whether Sarah Winchester was haunted or simply clever. (I"ll go with clever.) If you're looking for more modern-day examples of inventive thinkers, make sure to check out Miranda Cosgrove's Mission Unstoppable, which I wasn't aware of until I read this Forbes piece on the If/Then Summit. Gold stars for you, Summer Hathaway! And fun fact: Did you know both Jack Black's parents were rocket scientists? True story. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HwpOtax1aJo Jamee and I will be back in

We welcome Bodacious Berries & Big Barn Brewing owner, Craig Deitz to play "Not My Beer." Craig shares with us a little bit about how he started out in farming and agriculture, spent years as a high school teacher and running coach, and somehow ended up one of the leading craft brewers in the Inland Northwest. As usual we have our host Chris Cindric, announcer Dave Basaraba, and this week's panelists are Tim Hilton (Mountain Lakes Brewing), Matt Hanson (Whistle Punk Brewing), and Dave Musser (Bellwether Brewing). We get down to the nitty gritty about a little of everything... from the origins of a Wee Heavy and the difference between a Scotch Ale and a Scottish Ale, and we discover the true meaning of "being adrift without a head" on a sloop with no bathroom. All of this whilst we pass the porrone and have a few laughs on this edition of "Wheat, Wheat... Don't Tell Me!"

This week, Point of Inquiry welcomes comedian, monologist, and atheist, Julia Sweeney. Many may know Sweeney from her time on Saturday Night Live, her appearances on NPR's Wait Wait...Don't Tell Me!, and from her current roles on Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and Hulu's Shrill. Jim Underdown sat down with Sweeney at CFI West to discuss her time working on SNL, dealing with her catholic faith after the passing of her brother to cancer, how Carl Sagan, Michael Shermer, and CFI helped her become an atheist, her experiences navigating Hollywood as a non-believer, and her conflicting opinions surrounding the Me Too movement after her good friend, Al Franken was accused of misconduct. If you've never seen it before, Sweeney's, "Letting Go of God" talk is highly recommended for those who became atheists after living with a religious point of view. You can find Sweeney on twitter: @JIsbackintown.

(Episode is in Chinese. 這集用國語聊。) We talk with Dr. Peng (彭博士) today about his career as a nuclear engineer (核能工程師). A native of Taiwan, he completed his elementary through Master’s studies in Taiwan, and considers himself really lucky throughout his education endeavors to have had really great teachers who recognized his strengths and encouraged him to pursue his dreams. He then came to update New York for his PhD in nuclear engineering, because there weren’t programs offered in Taiwan at the time. He ended up raising his family in the US and having a career that took him to commercial power plants in several states around the US: Louisiana (路易斯安那州) to Michigan (密歇根州) to Illinois (伊利諾伊州) to Delaware (特拉華州) to Maryland (馬里蘭州). On the personal front, he shares about how his family plugged into the Taiwanese communities everywhere they lived, so that his kids would have the opportunity to learn about their heritage. I personally like his philosophy about passing on cultural heritage: it’s up to the parents to find ways to expose their kids to different things, and up to the children to pursue learning about things that spark an interest. 父母親必須要給機會讓小孩認識中國文化,小孩必須要有興趣保留中國人的一些傳統。 More details in the show notes on the website. *** Dr. Peng's book recommendation: Brighter than a Thousand Suns: A Personal History of the Atomic Scientists. Cynthia's recommendation: HBO miniseries Chernobyl (切爾諾貝利), created and written by Craig Mazin and directed by Johan Renck. This is such an incredibly well-made 5-part miniseries on HBO. Historically accurate portrayal of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster of April 1986, the human lives involved in cleaning up the aftermath, the promulgation of information out of the Soviet Union at the time. If you want to hear a bit more about the creation of the miniseries, listen to The Chernobyl Podcast, hosted by Peter Sagal (NPR’s “Wait Wait...Don't Tell Me!”) and series creator, writer and executive producer Craig Mazin. *** Say hi! 來打招呼!
