For filmmaker Petra Costa, democracy in her native country of Brazil is personal. Two years after Petra was born, the country returned to democratic rule after more than twenty years of military dictatorship. As Petra grew up, so, too, did the country's democracy. But, in more recent years, as she has meticulously documented in two densely layered and highly personal documentaries — first, in her Academy Award-nominated “The Edge of Democracy,” and now, with her riveting new Netflix documentary “Apocalypse in the Tropics” — Brazil has seen its democratic institutions undermined by a potent mix of right-wing politics and evangelical Christianity.   Petra joins Ken on the pod to discuss the close ties between the right-wing former military officer Jair Bolsonaro, who was elected Brazil's president in 2018, and the highly influential evangelical pastor Silas Malafaia. Witnessing the dissolution of the line between church and state, Petra describes her own deep dive into the Bible to try to explain where the country's apocalyptic turn may have come from — and where it may be headed. Told with a poetical and penetrating narration, this chilling tale of Brazil's teetering democracy has clear resonances with events taking place in the U.S.   Follow: @petracostal on Instagram and X @topdocspod on Instagram and X    Hidden Gem: “El Campeón del Mundo (The Champion of the World)”   The Presenting Sponsor of "Top Docs" is Netflix.

Infused with the relaxing quality of nature and the sound-masking properties of white noise, listening to running water is an ideal way to turn off all the stressful things life brings, and to de-stress. Some of our most popular sounds include a river, flowing creek, babbling brook, gentle waves on a lake, and a bamboo fountain. Rain also creates a natural white noise. Infused with the relaxing quality of nature and the sound-masking properties of white noise, listening to rain is an ideal way to switch off all the stressful things life brings and to de-stress. Some of our most popular sounds are rain on an umbrella, hailstorms, hard rain, soft rain, gentle rain, wind and rain, rain on a car.White noise helps babies and children to get a better and deeper night's sleep. This is because external sounds are masked by the noise. With white noise in the background, your child will not hear annoying cars driving by or dogs barking in bed. This allows your little one to sleep better. And it also saves you as a parent a lot of hours!Pink noise is more common in nature than you might expect. It can be compared to continuous rainfall or wind. In addition to white noise, pink noise is also increasing in popularity, especially in business environments. Because it can increase productivity, concentration and creativity.Brown noise can be compared to waves of the sea, a river current, strong winds or the sound of thunder during a storm. Like pink noise, brown noise is very similar to white noise. However, the frequencies have been lowered even further and a lot more concentrated. This gives it a rougher/coarse tone than pink noise. It sounds a bit deeper and a bit bass-like. The benefits of brown noise are the same as the other types of noise. It provides relaxation, increased focus and improved deep sleep.DISCLAIMER: Be aware that loud noises can damage your hearing. If you can't carry on a conversation without raising your voice while playing one of our spheres, the sound may be too loud for your ears. Do not place the speakers directly next to a baby's ears. If you have trouble hearing or ringing in your ears, stop listening to the white noise immediately and see an audiologist or your doctor. The sounds provided by ASMR Sleep Recordings are for entertainment purposes only and are not a treatment for sleep disorders or tinnitus. Why The Tropics Have A Weather Forecasting Problem

Weather in the tropics is decidedly different than it is in the middle latitudes. It turns out, so are the weather systems – the factors that create things like the daily temperature and humidity! Historically, most weather forecasting models have been based on data from high-income countries in the northern hemisphere. But different factors drive weather and climate near the equator – meaning that these weather forecast models are much less accurate at predicting weather in the tropics. This has implications for storm readiness, flooding preparedness and more. Atmospheric scientist Ángel F. Adames-Corraliza is aiming to change that. His research focuses on how water vapor – humidity – plays a key role in tropical weather systems. It's earned him a spot as one of this year's Macarthur Fellows. Interested in more science about how weather happens? Send us a textOn this episode of The Plant Movement Podcast, we welcome Alex Barth of Troy's Tropics Inc., based in Sarasota, Florida. Alex made the five-hour drive to join us in person and share his story of growth, adaptation, and resilience in the Green Industry.Alex grew up surrounded by plants thanks to his father, a terrestrial biologist focused on wetlands and conservation. That early exposure shaped his passion for horticulture and led him from planting trees as a child to launching his own business, The Plant Whisperer, before eventually joining Troy's Tropics in 2014. What started as a landscape division soon grew into a thriving wholesale nursery serving landscapers, garden centers, and beyond. In our conversation, Alex opens up about:  Selling to garden centers and strategies for creating additional revenue streams.  The challenges of expanding from retail into wholesale while staying rooted in quality and service.  Navigating hurricanes, market shifts, and the need to adapt quickly in Florida's fast-growing landscape.  Building strong relationships and why collaboration beats competition in the nursery world.  How social media—especially Instagram—now drives more than half of Troy's Tropics' sales.  The importance of educating and inspiring the next generation to keep the industry alive. From growing bougainvilleas and native plants to running propagation houses and offering full-service landscaping, Alex shares the lessons he's learned while helping Troy's Tropics scale from 10 employees to nearly 90. His perspective is grounded in faith, hard work, and a belief that relationships are the backbone of the Green Industry. This episode is packed with insights for growers, garden centers, landscapers, and anyone passionate about plants and business growth.Connect with Alex and see what's happening at the nursery on Instagram: @TroysTropicsTroy's TropicsWeb: troystropics.comFollow IG: https://www.instagram.com/troystropicssarasotaThe Plant Movement PodcastEmail: eddie@theplantmovementnetwork.com & willie@theplantmovementnetwork.comCall: (305) 216-5320Web: https://www.theplantmovement.comFollow Us: IG: https://www.instagram.com/theplantmovementpodcastA's Ornamental NurseryWE GROW | WE SOURCE | WE DELIVERCall: (305) 216-5320Web: https://www.asornamental.comFollow Us: IG: https://www.instagram.com/asornamentalnurseryThe Nursery GrowersCall: 786-522-4942Email: info@thenurserygrowers.comIG: www.instagram.com/thenurserygrowersweb: www.thenurserygrowers.comPlant Logistics Co.(Delivering Landscape Plant Material Throughout the State of Florida)Call: (305) 912-3098Web: https://www.plantlogisticsco.comFollow Us: IG: https://www.instagram.com/plantlogisticsDirected and Produced by Eddie EVDNT Gonzalez Disclaimer: The contents of this podcast/youtube video are for informational and entertainment purposes only and do not constitute financial, accounting, or legal advice. You can switch between apps while studying or working without pausing the ambient sound.About our sounds:Water creates a natural white noise. Consult your doctor if you regularly have severe sleeping problems, experience fitful/restless sleep or feel tired during the day.ASMR Sleep Recordings is the white noise and nature sounds podcast to help you sleep, study or soothe a baby. ASMR Sleep Recordings has uploaded more than 400+ episodes in the 4 years that the podcast has been online. You can listen to all episodes of the podcast on your favorite podcast platform.
