We review Francis Ford Coppola's polarizing, self-funded, $120 million dollar, sci-fi epic, Megalopolis. A film forty plus years in the making, which possibily predicted 9/11, is jammed full of oft-disjointed dialogue, Shakespearean theatrics, experimental cinematography and effects, allegedly THC-fueled throughout, undergirded by undergraduate philosophical fixations, bepopulate with very talented performers, and despite most people's reactions, positive or less than, there seems to be a large consensus that it's at the very least, interesting. Is it the (intentionally) funniest movie possibly of all time? Or does it lean more toward being a $120 million dollar Neal Breen vanity project? Will this cinematic-celluloidal instantiation be the catalyst the world needs to begin asking the questions that lead to the dialogue to the conversation that is our very utopia? We sort through some "time, consciousness, and courage", i.e. thoughts and theories, to try to get to the bottom of it all.Commiserate on Discord: discord.gg/aDf4Yv9PrYSupport: patreon / buzzsproutNever Forget: standwithdanielhale.orgGenral RecommendationsJosh's Recommendations: Aubrey Plaza Double Feature: 1) Ingrid Goes West 2) Emily the CriminalTim's Recommendations: 1) The Penguin 2) Help Bailey Beat Cancer: Surgery NeededFurther Reading, Viewing, ListeningShow notes + Full list of links, sources, etcMore From Joshua Nomen-MutatioSome Fiction WritingAn ongoing novel: The Feeding StageA short story: Lydia's DriveA short story: The Form AwardsMore From Timothy Robert BuechnerPodcast: Q&T ARE / violentpeople.co Tweets: @ROHDUTCHLocationless Locationsheatdeathpod.comEvery show-related link is corralled and available here.Twitter: @heatdeathpodPlease send all Letters of Derision, Indifference, Inquiry, Mild Elation, et cetera to: heatdeathodtheuniversepodcast@gmail.comSend us a textSupport the show

And just like their real-life counterparts, these on-screen influencers can give us some pretty unrealistic ideas about what it's like to be a full time content creator. But sometimes they give us a more realistic, deeper look into the darker side of influencing that social media stars often try to hide… So, let's look at what the media constantly gets wrong about these careers and their associated finances, the ways all creators are portrayed as uber-wealthy, and why they still get so much hate. You know sometimes we at Movies for Life think we don't record our episodes... all we do is translate... Today we're tackling a topic that has become a big one with both of us lately - that of the pros and cons of social media, and the effects that it can have on people. And the two movies that we've chosen for this are ones that we mentioned pretty recently as some of our favorite discoveries, so we hope you dig them too! Brian's choice is first and it is INGRID GOES WEST from 2017. Starring Aubrey Plaza and Elizabeth Olsen, it is probably the one that is most directly about social media and how it can affect people on both sides of the influencer/fan parasocial relationship. Then we get into Michele's movie, VENGEANCE from 2022, written, directed, and starring BJ Novak. This one is about a lot of things in our modern technology culture, and has some very deep thoughts on topics like true crime and social media. In this edition of the BFG podcast–now with vastly improved sound quality!–host Neal Pollack welcomes the well-read Michael Washburn to discuss the work and legacy of the novelist Russell Banks, who died recently at the age of 82. Michael and Neal have nothing but praise for Banks's two best-known novels, Affliction and The Sweet Hereafter, both of which became popular and critically-acclaimed movies. But they also recommend you check out his novel Continental Drift, and Michael has special affection for Banks's short stories, which so accurately describe the struggles of working-class New Hampshire residents. They aren't so keen on his later works, when Banks drifted away from what he knows best, but he still leaves behind a literary legacy worth celebrating.Aubrey Plaza is just getting started with her legacy, and Neal welcomes Rachel Llewellyn to talk about Plaza's new indie film 'Emily the Criminal,' now streaming on Netflix. Neal loves the show's gritty crime-drama feel, which resembles breaking bad, and praises Plaza's nuanced performance, which carries the movie above the usual genre fare. Rachel also mentions Plaza's work in Black Bear, Neal talks about her in Ingrid Goes West, and it's probably pretty certain that The White Lotus comes up at some point. It's not as though Aubrey Plaza is some sort of hidden gem, she's quite famous at this point, but her cultural footprint will certainly only grow from here.Rachel sticks around to talk about 'The Rig,' a new eco-sci-fi thriller series now airing on Amazon Prime. She praises the way the show tackles difficult issues with subtlety, and then occasionally it sounds like an extended Facebook thread argument about climate change. But creator David MacPherson grew up around Scottish oil workers, so he understands their politics and their point of view on the world much better than the average script writer would. A very tense ocean thriller that does not, according to Rachel, feature The Loch Ness Monster.

What's your biggest emotional wound? Today, we unveil our first film review of "Ingrid Goes West" (2017, dir. Matt Spicer). We'd recommend watching the film before listening, but a quick synopsis of the film is "an unhinged social media stalker [Aubrey Plaza] moves to LA and insinuates herself into the life of an Instagram star [Elizabeth Olsen]". Craig goes into research-mode, Kay goes into screenwriting student-mode, there are differing opinions on the ending of the film, Kay gives her alternative ending, and chaos does NOT ensue!

In this episode of Parallel Fiction, Heather and Jeff take a close look at Obsessions.  Specifically they look at characters with unhealthy lifestyles, infatuations, and self-destructive habits that cloud their morals. Heather beings the show by presenting The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides.  Told through the perspective of two main characters, Heather unfolds the story which deals with mental illness, murder, mystery, and the obsessions that drive the main characters.  Heather was able to finish this book, which says a lot, and was actually blown away by a huge twist in the tail end of the novel. Did you know?  The Silent Patient debuted on the NYTimes bestseller list at #1.  Not bad! Jeff brings us back for part 2 of the summary portion of the show, outlining the film Ingrid Goes West starring Aubrey Plaza and Elizabeth Olsen.  The story follows Ingrid, as Jeff mentions, who is addicted to her phone and also may need professional treatment for other issues.  Jeff thinks the movie really picks up once Ingrid lands in California and befriends Dan, and later Taylor (Olsen).  Our host mentions that this is a dark comedy and may not be for everyone, but conveys a lot of social commentary on our lives with phones and internet influencers. Fun Fact!  Much like his character in the film, Wyatt Russell does not participate in social media at all. Following these reviews, Heather and Jeff dive into commonalities between the two works such as admiration, healthy fandom, comparing lives, going too far, and self esteem issues. Listen in to hear Jeff and Heather's candid thoughts on the masterpiece scenes of each story, how Ingrid Goes West and The Silent Patient compare, and how Jeff and Heather relate the two. Share this episode with everyone who loves thrillers in your life! Heather's rating for Marley And Me: Very Nice – A great read that you'll blow through once you get going. Jeff's rating for Ingrid Goes West: Very Nice – Top notch acting and an interesting plot push this rating past just Nice.  A thought provoking take on what social media does to a person. Watch Ingrid Goes West here: https://www.amazon.com/Ingrid-Goes-West-Aubrey-Plaza/dp/B074T4MBHB Read The Silent Patient here: https://www.amazon.com/Silent-Patient-Alex-Michaelides/dp/1250301696 About Parallel Fiction:Parallel Fiction is the perfect supplemental companion to all of the stories you consume.
