A shared love for the music of Aaron Turner brought together some nerds a few years ago and this is like the core of VoS - so it was about time for this interview. However, we like to do things a little differently here and therefore we did not talk in too much detail about with musician Aaron Turner but much more with the (visual) artist Aaron Turner, whose work did not only grace many of the HydraHead releases but also many other artists' records. It seems odd to only mention SUMAC, his latest band, because Aaron has been a stalwart in producing forward-thinking media through his numerous musical projects as well as his visual art. You’re undoubtedly familiar with his other bands Isis, Old Man Gloom and his various collaborations with Justin Broderick, Twilight, Lustmord and Chelsea Wolfe. He is also the main man at Hydrahead Records, whose catalog helped define progressive heavy music.Our chat was recorded prior to the Caleb Scofield Benefit that happened in Los Angeles during this past October. Jason Hellmann and I have been friends for close to two decades. We met during the late 90’s in Boston when I started seeing him shooting photos at a lot of the shows I went to. Hellmann, in my estimation, was one of the best photographers to document the early Hydrahead, late-90’s New England hardcore metal scene. More recently, the has been embarking on these Jack London-esque adventures to far flung corners of the globe. Ever wonder what it’s like to be trapped on the ice?
