In this episode, we explore the halachos of applying and reapplying bandages with medicinal creams on Shabbos, including when they may be replaced if they fall, the role of a non-Jew in assisting with medical care, and the distinctions between biblical and rabbinic prohibitions. We also discuss handling boils, extracting pus versus blood, and related concerns of causing wounds. Practical guidance is given on wound dressings, avoiding permanent knots, changing soiled cloths for dignity and health, and preparing before Shabbos to minimize issues.

The question isn't if—it's how you respond. In this episode of Healthspan Digest, I break down the 3 lessons I'm learning in real-time as I navigate this crash, recovery, and the curveballs life throws at us:Lesson 1: Pause before you push – why stopping is often the smartest first move.Lesson 2: Reframe the setback – how to turn obstacles into opportunities.Lesson 3: Adapt, don't quit – the secret to building long-term resilience.Whether you're dealing with injury, stress, or life chaos, these lessons will help you keep moving forward without throwing in the towel.
Hilchot Chatzitza Part 5: Bandages and Casts…
God isn't interested in offering you just a bandage. Bandages are for small cuts, temporary fixes. God wants to do surgery on your life. Many of us come to God, and we say, I'm in pain, will you help me? And God says, yes, of course, I'll help you. Give it all to me. Jesus offers us so much more than a quick fix! He says: "I came so that they (that's you) can have real and eternal life, more and better life than you ever dreamed of." Jesus says: Come. Come to me. Lay it all down—everything you love, everything you depend on, everything you think you are or you want to be. And I will give you life. Always remember, there is hope with God. radio.hopewithgod.com

Daily Halacha Podcast - Daily Halacha By Rabbi Eli J. Mansour
The Halacha below was derived from multiple classes orated by Rabbi Eli Mansour in the Bekiim B'Halacha series. Click on any of the dates below to hear the original audio files, which are the sources for today's Halacha below. 04/15/25 ; 04/16/25 ; 04/23/25 ; 04/24/25 ; 05/13/25 Does Hair, Dirt, or Clothing Count as a Barrier (Hatssitsa) Between the Tefillin and the Body? The Misva of wearing Tefillin requires the box (Bayit) of the Tefillin Shel Yad to be placed directly upon the skin. The Halacha introduces the concept of Hatssitsa—a barrier that interferes between the Tefillin and the arm. This Halacha explores what is considered a Hatssitsa, what kinds of materials invalidate the Misva, and how one should prepare the arm and head before wearing Tefillin to ensure full compliance. Does the Tefillin Shel Yad Need to Touch the Skin Directly? Yes. The Shulhan Aruch (Orah Haim 27:4) states clearly that the Bayit of the Tefillin Shel Yad must rest directly on the skin, without any chatitsa (interruption) beneath it. This includes shirts, undershirts, sleeves, or even sweatbands. The retzuot (straps) may wrap over clothing, but the Bayit itself must not. If the Bayit is on top of a sleeve or bandage, the person has not fulfilled the Misva at all. It is as if the Tefillin were never worn. Is Hair Considered a Barrier? Hair is part of the body and is not considered a Hatssitsa. The Poskim clarify that normal arm or head hair does not interfere with the Misva. Even a full head of hair—curly, thick, or long—is not inherently problematic. However, the issue arises when the hair is matted down with gel, spray, or dirt. If a person uses strong hair gel that forms a hard crust, or if sweat causes the hair to stick together like a shield, then some Poskim consider that a potential barrier. The Halachic principle is: if the material is foreign and not naturally part of the body, and if it is something people would normally remove (like crusted gel or thick mud), then it could be considered a Hatssitsa. What About Hair Gel, Sweat, or Oil? This is a common question. Light gel that keeps hair in place but does not form a crust is generally permitted. If the gel is soft and pliable and does not act as a thick layer between the Bayit and the scalp, then one may place the Tefillin Shel Rosh over it. But if the gel hardens into a shell-like layer that creates a clear separation between the scalp and the Tefillin, that can be a problem. Similarly, sweat is not a problem unless it is mixed with something foreign—such as dried mud or blood. If the skin is sweaty or slightly oily, that is still considered skin. To avoid questions, it's best to wash or wipe the forehead before wearing Tefillin Shel Rosh, especially if a person has oily skin, applied lotion, or used hair products. What About Bandages, Gauze, or Wounds? If there is a bandage on the arm or forehead, that does count as a Hatssitsa. In such cases, the person must try to remove the bandage or find a way to position the Bayit on clean, uncovered skin. If there is a wound, and removing the bandage would cause pain or bleeding, and there is no area to place the Tefillin properly, then one is exempt from the Misva of the Tefillin Shel Yad for that day. However, he should still wear the Tefillin Shel Rosh, assuming the head is unaffected. If only part of the bicep is covered, and there is still enough exposed skin to place the Bayit, then he may proceed and fulfill the Misva. Can a Sleeve Be Pulled Over the Arm After Tefillin Is Put On? Yes, after the Tefillin Shel Yad is in place and the Beracha has been recited, one may pull a sleeve over the arm to keep warm or to keep the Tefillin hidden. However, this is not ideal. Many have the custom to leave the Tefillin exposed, at least partially, as a sign of pride and public sanctification. But if a person is cold or concerned for safety (such as walking in public), it is permissible to cover the Tefillin after the fact. Just make sure the Tefillin was placed directly on the skin to begin with. What If the Retzuah Is Twisted or Touches Clothing? The strap (retzuah) may touch clothing or twist slightly along the arm. This is not a problem. The requirement for direct skin contact applies only to the Bayit—not the strap. However, if the knot of the Tefillin is wrapped in a way that causes the Bayit to be lifted off the skin or sit at an angle, that can be a problem. The Tefillin must sit flush with the arm or head. Summary - The Bayit of the Tefillin Shel Yad must rest directly on the skin, with no barrier. - Hair is not a problem unless hardened by thick gel or dirt that creates a crust. - Sweat or light oil does not invalidate the Misva. - Bandages are a Hatssitsa and must be removed, unless medically necessary. - A person may cover the Tefillin with clothing after they are properly placed. - The strap may touch clothing; only the Bayit requires direct contact with the skin.
Bandaids are undeniably handy, and there are plenty of situations where they do the job that needs doing. But there are also lots of times when a wound is too big, too irregular, or too sensitive for a bandaid to be the best choice. That's where bespoke bandaging comes into play! You can learn bandaging basics really quickly – yes, even through podcast audio – and that's what today's episode is all about.Bandages are extremely versatile and customizable – even without getting a dozen different types of gauze and pads. Truly, a box of 2″ and 4″ roller gauze, plus some gauze pads and micropore tape, is plenty for most situations you'll run into. For the purposes of practice, they're all you need to get started. When you're practicing your bandaging technique, your big goal is to make the bandages neat, secure, and yet still allowing for a normal range of motion. The best way to get good at this is to practice. The best way to practice is to get some friends together for a “mummy party”, where everyone gets bandaged by everyone else! We're highlighting first aid herbalism on the podcast all month. I was able to sit down and chat with Shannon Wilson from the Dayton/Cincinnati, OH based band, Bandages, to chat about their new S/T record and single, "Perfect Hit" featuring Joe Gittleman from the Mighty Mighty Bosstones. They are definitely in the rock and punk spectrum but don't fall in any particular sub-genre nor try to align to any specific sound. I personally love that about this band. If you've been paying attention to the politics in the United States of America at all, you'll clearly understand what "Perfect Hit" is all about, intuitively. That said, Shannon and I had a great conversation about their band, politics, health care, and all the good things they have in front of them. You can keep up with them at:Bandages:https://www.instagram.com/bandages_music/https://www.bandagesmerch.comhttps://bandages1.bandcamp.com/Thank you for your continued support!Brett JohnsonHost of B-Side Breakdownhttps://www.instagram.com/bsidebreakdownhttps://www.instagram.com/threecrowsclubhttps://www.instagram.com/brettjamesjohnsonhttps://linktr.ee/brettjohnson#Bandages #PerfectHit #ShannonWilson #JoelGittleman #MightyMightyBosstones #bsidebreakdown #threecrowsclub #brettjamesjohnson #musicpodcast
In this episode, the discussion focuses on the laws surrounding carrying wet items, particularly towels, on Shabbat. We explore the scenario of carrying a towel after drying oneself, highlighting concerns about potentially wringing it out. We also delve into different halachic perspectives regarding wet towels, such as whether it's permissible to bring a towel home after use in a bathhouse and the significance of the towel's absorption of water. The episode further touches on the concept of carrying items like bandages or cloths related to wounds on Shabbat, emphasizing that they are treated as clothing rather than burdens. The podcast concludes with a preview of the next episode, which will cover the rules of cleaning and folding clothing on Shabbat.

Tune into this podcast episode where we learn about the benefits of the amniotic sac with Lisa Kestler of Hill Country Placentas! Whether or not someone wants to encapsulate their placenta, that can donate the portion of the amniotic sac to help people heal. Bandages that help heal persistent wounds are being made with the amniotic sac. Lisa has been involved in the birth world for over two decades. She was a NICU Respiratory Therapist for five years before deciding that her true passion lies with helping mothers. She first heard about placenta encapsulation from a Canadian midwife in 2009 and in 2011 finished her first of two placenta encapsulation certifications. She obtained her second certification in 2015 and during that same year opened the first stand-alone commercial kitchen solely dedicated to placentas in the central Texas area. Lisa was also instrumental in having the Texas state law changed in 2015. This law requires that all hospitals in Texas give the mother her placenta if she requests it. Before this law, hospitals could require a court order if a mother wanted to keep her placenta. In 2023 Lisa completed her Master of Science in clinical mental health counseling at Texas Tech and is an associate licensed professional counselor in Texas. As a mother to seven children (six living,) Lisa understands the challenges that pregnancy, birth, and postpartum bring. Lisa has dedicated her life and career to helping new mothers have the best postpartum recovery possible. A special episode from this year's annual Royal Society Summer Exhibition in London, with Claudia Hammond joined by BBC health and science correspondent, James Gallagher, to take a look at a range of new health research. The exhibitions include a look at how special forms of UV light might be able to cut away cancerous cells in brain tumours, with the possibility of light emitting bandages also being used to target cancer treatments. Claudia and James also look at research from The Francis Crick Institute into whether a simple blood test can help work out how to quickly identify patients who are most likely to deteriorate when they have a virus. We also hear how much brain devices we can buy online really tell us about our brain activity, as well as research into how the way babies wriggle may help identify future developmental issues. Claudia and James also compete in a number of scientific games to see who is this year's Summer Exhibition champion. Presenter: Claudia Hammond Producer: Dan Welsh
