Converge experienced a significant transformation following the release of Petitioning the Empty Sky. They found a new bassist in Cave In's Stephen Brodsky, who would join the band on several releases in 1997 as well as their first proper full-length album the following year. This release also serves as the first full-length recorded, at least partially, by guitarist Kurt Ballou at the now-iconic God City Studios and the debut under their new label, Equal Vision Records. While their next album would arguably reshape the landscape of extreme music, When Forever Comes Crashing captures Converge at their most ferocious, precise, and unconventional yet. Join us this week as we conclude this era of Converge with When Forever Comes Crashing! Interview by Kris PetersIt's hard to believe any international band could have been around long enough to earn legendary status yet not have toured this country before. Not that Australians feel entitled or big-headed and therefore expect such bands to tour here - quite the opposite. It's more because Australians generally need some form of tangible connection with a band or musician before being able to usher those words of adulation. So basically we need to have some form of sonic ownership, which, I guess, is a little entitled but let's not split hairs shall we?Because the point of this conversation is that legendary US metal/hardcore pioneers Cave In have finally locked in some dates Down Under, coming out with post metal outfit The Ocean and Danish label mates LLRR for a string of shows starting in June.A band considered by many to have been ahead of their time, Cave In were instrumental in introducing metalcore to the masses before exploring a plethora of musical avenues including psychedelic rock infused metal. With the band enjoying renewed success following the addition of Converge bassist Nate Newton to cover the tragic loss of Caleb Schofield in 2018, Cave In released Heavy Pendulum in 2022 which brought together the many and varied musical influences explored over their six previous albums and introduced the band to a fresh legion of fans that continues to grow to this day.HEAVY recently spoke with singer/guitarist Stephen Brodsky about their first ever trip to Australia, starting with why the band has neglected us for so long."That is a great question," he laughed. "It will be my second time over there. Another band that I play in called Old Man Gloom toured there with Converge about 10 years ago, but I do remember in my travels there definitely is some Cave In fans saying when are you gonna bring Cave In over, we've been waiting, and that was ten years ago (laughs). Sometimes it's just… especially with international tours for bands at our level to work out something where we're not just breaking even or eating it is hard. Those offers don't come our way very often, so we were able to work something out for this one, and we're all very stoked on all the logistics and the inner workings of the offer itself. It made sense, so we're finally doing it. The idea just had to marinate a little bit."In the full interview, Stephen talks more about their first tour and what they are expecting, what we can expect from them, coming with The Ocean and LLRR and why the three bands will work well together, the early days of Cave In and where they fit in, how they were ahead of their time, their debut album Until Your Heart Stops and if he is still happy with it, their musical tastes and how each influences the band's music, reforming after the death of Caleb and the difficulties associated with coming back, Heavy Pendulum and the way it covers the back catalogue of Cave In and more.
This week we're discussing Mutants, the newest album by Mutoid Man. Led by Stephen Brodsky, who many should know from Cave In (among many other side projects), as well as his guest appearances with bands like Converge (not to mention his role on Two Minutes to Late Night), Mutoid Man is one of the absolute most fun metal bands around. Blending elements of countless metal subgenres, as well as 90s video game and cartoon nostalgia, Mutants is one of the coolest albums we've heard from this year. Catchy, diverse, expertly performed, and charming as hell. Give it a shot.Closing track: “Setting Sun”Mutants on Spotifyhttps://open.spotify.com/album/2QiQ5gMwXyT5y0pY5DRV6P?si=f213b6d624524b8aPatreonhttps://www.patreon.com/everyalbumeverMerchhttps://pandermonkey.creator-spring.com/Mike's EP:Pander Monkey on Bandcamp, Spotify, Apple,Instagram:Mike @pandermonkeyAlex @everyalbumalexHistory Tom's stuff:New album on BandcampDebut album on Bandcamp, Spotify, AppleSubstackWebsite
Keith sits down with Stephen Brodsky to discuss Stephen's move to New York City, the formation of Mutoid Man, the band's creative process and influences, balancing time between Mutoid Man and Cave In during the early years of the band, the passing of Cave in bassist Caleb Scofield which brought Cave In back together to finish and release the "Final Transmission" LP and how Caleb inspired Stephen to make the move to New York where Mutoid Man was born. We also discuss the work Stephen does with BMG Music Group, Cave In's difficult major label experience, the making of Mutoid Man's latest LP "Mutants", the bands' recent addition of Grammy Award winning bassist Jeff Matz of High on Fire and more. Guest co-host: My original co-host Tommy returns and we discuss Cave In's lasting influence, how the band got us into this world of music and more.
Stephen Brodsky should be a household name in our realms because he's been in famous bands for close to 30 years - Cave-In, Converge (YES! for a very short time), Droneflower, Old Man Gloom and Mutoid Man to drop a few. His voice and his guitar playing has flavored many of our most beloved records. The last band, Mutoid Man, has released a new record called Mutants a few weeks ago. You can check out our review here, but for us here at VoS that's not enough, so we talked to Stephen about the new songs, the influences on Mutoid Man and much more. Mutants is the band's third full-length (not counting a few shorter releases, including 2014's Helium Head) but comes after a few years' silence. We find out what led to this short break, why Stephen loves Prince, which Van Halen album he prefers and why. We talk comics and Indiana Jones and to what extent Mutoid Man is a “fun band”. The latest episode of The BrooklynVegan Show is an interview with Walter Schreifels, who's busy as ever. His beloved early 2000s-era band Rival Schools just gave their classic debut LP United by Fate an expanded 20th anniversary reissue, and the band is reuniting for some shows in 2023. On top of that, Quicksand continue to tour and put out new music, Youth of Today just wrapped up some shows, and Gorilla Biscuits just announced some upcoming dates. I recorded the conversation with Walter before the YOT shows happened and before the GB announcement, which he sort of teased during the episode, and we spoke about just about everything he's got going on lately. We focused a lot on United by Fate; Walter reflected on making the album, working on it with Bon Jovi producer Luke Ebbin, and the impact the album's left over time. We talked about how, with Rival Schools coming at the start of the emo boom and taking bands like Thursday and Taking Back Sunday on tour, Walter was simultaneously a "not-so-elder statesman" of that world and also a contemporary/peer and kindred spirit. He also talked about meeting and being won over by Cave In in those days, and how now Cave In's Stephen Brodsky and Candiria's John LaMacchia have both played as Quicksand's touring guitarists this year. The conversation also spiraled into other topics, like the parallels between the rising tides of Nirvana in the early '90s and Turnstile today, comparisons between hardcore in the '80s and hardcore now, and much more. Pick up the new United by Fate reissue on red vinyl in our store, and also browse our collection of Quicksand, Youth of Today, and Gorilla Biscuits records and merch. Converge is releasing a brand new collaborative album with Stephen Brodsky from Cave In and Chelsea Wolfe today called “Bloodmoon 1.” I spoke with vocalist Jacob Bannon about this highly anticipated album, staying sane during the pandemic, the return to live shows, being a small business owner during the pandemic and much more. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Converge frontman Jacob Bannon is our guest this week! We discussed the band's forthcoming 10th studio album, Bloodmoon: I, and the story of how he finally got to collaborate on it with Chelsea Wolfe, Cave In's Stephen Brodsky and multi-instrumentalist Ben Chisholm, how the songs evolved with everyone's contributions throughout the process, how each participant pushed one another's creative boundaries for the better, the music he's been listening to lately, the negativity of making music a competition within scenes, and reaching your goals in life with a positive path. Petar and Brandon discuss Trivium frontman Matt Heafy's comment that Metallica are the greatest band on Earth, Avenged Sevenfold waiting to release their next album, Limp Bizkit's new record, and the Foo Fighters upcoming horror-comedy film. Oh man...so excited about this one. We spent time chatting with Jordan Olds, the brains? behind Two Minutes To Late Night. If you don't know Two Minutes, what are you going....click the link below and dive in. Jordan spent the pandemic organizing an incredible group of "Bedroom Covers"...underground musicians covering some of their favorite songs and artists. Well it was underground until he trotted out a cover of Rush's Anthem by Danny Carey, Les Claypool, Bill Kelliher, Claudio Sanchez, Stephen Brodsky, and Jordan himself. That video has over 1.1 million views on YouTube, and subsequent bedroom covers include Jay Weinberg, and even Jay's dad Max (Bruce Springstein) covering The Misfits. Two Minutes just launched a new live stream series called Splitsville, taking inspiration from 7-inch punk splits where 2 bands cover each other's songs. The series takes advantage of Bandcamp's new live streaming concert platform, and it was brilliant, with Cave In and Every Time I Die covering each other (with exclusive shirts and 7" records available to purchase if you bought a $5 show ticket. Both the bedroom covers and Splitsville are generating revenue for all the artists and production people involved in a time when there's not much going on in live music, and Jordan has even been able to raise money for a bunch of worthy causes. One of the good ones folks.Things you will learn about Jordan:The real mission of Two Minutes is to "widen the tent" in metal. Less gatekeepy please. We agree. He has a new kind of loud neighbors even after living the city.Van Halen DOESNOTEQUAL Whitesnake. It was just a poster and the resolution was low.The secret to the success of the channel? No sleep. You too can make a living off of puns. The skinny couch room in all the bedroom cover videos was a happy accident. He has a nice BC Rich Mockingbird bass. Jeff sold it to him...lol.He also has a friend who can do really nice refinish work on guitars...hit him up.During the blind listens, he very much enjoyed that "Vazumnacht is a Krampus inspired dark Holiday EP."Stick around for an epic rant about why singers in heavy bands should just go ahead and take vocal lessons, even if it is goofy as hell. On this week's Classic Albums Series podcast, Steve and Remfry travel back in time (and space, LOL!) to dig into the second album from Boston metalcore brutes turned space rock innovators Cave In; 2000’s masterpiece Jupiter. We look at the Boston scene of the late 90’s and how Cave In risked the ire of punk rockers to create, in our opinion, the first ever amalgam of hardcore and prog rock, the influence it had on the scene, the legacy of the record and why we believe that Cave In deserve a place in this list despite not being the most commercially successful band. Plus, we hear from Cave In’s own Stephen Brodsky, who answers some of our questions and reminisces on the creation and recording of the record. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
On this week's Sidetrack episode, we listen to Cave In frontman Stephen Brodsky's side project, Mutoid Man. Unlike the polished sound that Cave In achieved with Antenna, the music of Mutoid Man (freed from the constraints of a major label) is Brodsky unchained. An excellent blend of psychedelic and stoner rock, Mutoid Man is a crank up and tune out type of band that is unlikely to disappoint. Mutoid Man - Gnarcissist Mutoid Man - Reptilian Soul Mutoid Man - Lost In The Hive The Mercury Program - Traveling At Night Every Time I Die - Ebolarama Cave In - Shapeshifter This show is part of the Pantheon Podcast network.

Episode 207 - One of the most influential bands in both metalcore and post-hardcore, Cave In has been making incredible records since the '90's. Stephen Brodsky, who got his start as the bass player in Converge, took over lead vocal duties for the band, who quickly made their name in the scene with their classic space-rock meets emo-core album "Jupiter". After signing to a major label, it looked like Cave In was bound to take over the rock world with tours with Foo Fighters and Muse. Although that never happened, Cave In still holds their place as one of the most important underground rock bands ever. Stephen discusses the early days of being a high schooler in Converge, becoming a lead singer overnight, and the tragic death of Cave In bass player Caleb Scofield. Learn more about your ad choices. (0:49) Top story this week is the second helicopter crash within the past month, this time atop a building in Midtown. The FAA confirms that Timothy McCormack was not licensed to fly in bad weather because he was not "instrument rated", meaning that he was not qualified to fly a helicopter using only the instrument panel and was only certified to fly in good weather when visibility was greater than 3 miles. Live Performance by Stephen Brodsky
Joining us this week is singer, guitarist and songwriter Stephen Brodsky of Cave In, Mutoid Man and many other projects. Stephen takes us back to the beginning: bootlegging Metallica onto cassettes to practice guitar licks, early grade school jams and trying to figure out how to get distortion. We explore his his high school years, discovering hardcore (and hating it at first) and what eventually led to the formation of Cave In. We discuss the evolution of the band, from the “metalcore” beginnings to the transition to Jupiter and the fan backlash that ensued from that album onto Antenna. We get into his newest project, Mutoid Man, and contemplate the current state of “metal” music. We cover reissues, guitar rigs and much, much more. Enjoy! Songs in this Episode: Intro - Big Riff30:48 - Terminal Deity by Cave In43:11 - Jupiter by Cave In1:00:31 - Reptilian Soul by Mutoid Man1:07: 26 - Magnified by Cave In (Failure cover)Outro - Requiem Follow on Twitter / Facebook Request A Review / Buy A T-Shirt
