Rwake is one of the world's most unique and powerful metal bands. The Arkansas powerhouse returns after 13 years with their new album The Return Of Magik, out now on Relapse records. After over a decade of various states of stasis, the deeply psychospiritual power and energy of Rwake's singular sound has evolved into an even more transcendental monster. Drummer Jon O Garrett of Turbid North talks about the Antartica origins of the band as well as the six years it took to put out their record “The Decline”, growing up playing in bands/in bars with his early band The Destro, the busy last few years of touring with bands; Warbeast, Mas Generator & Shock Withdrawal, Tommy Buckley of Soilent Green as an influence, the two days to prep for a month-long EU tour with Weedeater (and acclimating to the stage volume of the band), Meshuggah and Tomas Haake's drumming as influences, playing border towns in Mexico and Bulgaria for a tour with Mondo Generator, and a whirlwind 2024 with 19 countries!
Novelist Robert Gipe believes that when you use writing prompts, "you're just kind of fishing for something that works."If you're lucky, you might end up with "a couple of sentences that have some energy to them, that have some heat." Robert says those sentences can help you build a piece of writing "you feel good enough about to share with others."Try your luck with three of Robert's favorite writing prompts. According to him, these prompts use form "as a way of letting your unconscious drive the content." About Robert GipeRobert Gipe won the 2015 Weatherford Award for Outstanding Appalachian Novel for his first novel, Trampoline. His second novel, Weedeater, was published in 2018. His third novel, Pop, was published in 2021.All three novels are published by Ohio University Press. In 2021, the trilogy won the Judy Gaines Young Book Award. From 1997 to 2018, Gipe directed the Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College Appalachian Program in Harlan. Gipe is founding producer of the Higher Ground Community Performance Series and has served as a script consultant for the Hulu series, Dopesick, and a producer on the feature film, The Evening Hour.Gipe resides in Harlan County, Kentucky. He grew up in Kingsport, Tennessee.
After a relatively quiet year by their standards - which included shows earlier this year with Pantera - Australia's favourite slice of brutality, King Parrot, are set to end the year with a band with their When The Weed Meets The Speed Australian Tour which kicks off at Mo's Desert Clubhouse on November 6.King Parrot have always done things their own way and at their own pace, and as such not too many rumblings have been heard from fans despite the band's inactivity on the touring circuit. They know that the boys must be getting shit done. And get shit done they have, bringing out North Carolina's stoner rockers Weedeater to join Australian acts Astrodeath and Choof for a tour that promises as much feverish musical chaos as you can stand. Between the four bands, there's elements of doom, sludge, thrash, stoner, grind and deathcore, and you don't have to be a scientist to know that that is a recipe just waiting for sonic disaster. The reason for King Parrot's neglecting of their flock? A new album. And one which vocalist Matt Young promises will be everything you expect from King Parrot and more. Then there's the little things about a European and UK tour early next year with a band called Pantera. You might have heard of them?Even when they're quiet, they are rowdy. Bless their Alisterus scapularis (look it up).Not knowing where to start, HEAVY sat down for a chat with Youngy earlier this week to try and get up to speed on what King Parrot have been doing while they've been doing nothing."Mate, we're ready to go," he said of the upcoming run of shows. "It's good man, it's exciting. We had a couple of months off playing shows and all that sort of stuff because we've been really focussing on the new record and getting the finishing touches done. Just spending time in the studio and focussing on that. Now it's getting to that point where we're ready to play again. Ready to hit the road and do what we do, then hopefully start unleashing this new record next year. In the meantime, we're gonna smash out a big Aussie tour and get around the country and see our people."In the full interview, Youngy expressed enthusiasm about supporting the music scene by bringing up-and-coming bands on tour. We spoke about the diverse range of bands on the tour, describing it as "fucking brutal" and "awesome". Matt also highlighted the importance of having time to hang out with the bands in different locations, which he believes will contribute to the tour's success.Matt mentioned that they usually rehearse a few days before the tour, focusing on putting on the best show possible. He also shared that they have played many shows and tours, and have a good understanding of what works best for them. He also discussed the importance of audience interaction and energy during their performances. Matt confirmed that they love audience banter and feeding off their energy.Matt discussed the progress of their new album, which has been in the works for the best part of a year. He mentioned that they have been working on it organically, with a focus on jamming and improvisation, which he believes adds to the fluidity of their songs. Matt also shared that they have been recording in a studio, taking their time with the mixing process and getting feedback from everyone involved. He expressed excitement about the album's release next year and the opportunity for fans to hear new songs at their upcoming shows. Matt also mentioned that they are unlikely to release a single before Christmas, preferring to roll out the album next year.We also broached the exciting news that King Parrot is set to join Pantera and Power Trip for a run of shows in Europe and the UK next year, plus more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.
Calling Robert Gipe an author or novelist is a bit like calling Neil deGrasse Tyson a YouTuber. Yes, Robert wrote a widely praised self-illustrated trilogy of novels — “Trampoline,” “Weedeater” and “Pop” — that follows the travails of a young woman growing up in rural Appalachia. He completed that authorly feat, however, after decades working as an educator, community builder and theater-maker in and around Harlan, KY, where he continues to reside.Originally from Kingsport, TN, Robert moved to Southeastern Kentucky in the late '90s after receiving his master's in American studies at the University of Massachusetts. Initially he worked in marketing and fundraising for the legendary community media organization Appalshop in Whitesburg, KY and then became a professor and program coordinator of the Appalachian Center at Southeast Kentucky Community & Technical College in Cumberland. Soon thereafter he created Higher Ground, a community theater organization that since 2002 has created and produced plays with and for the community on local topics ranging from opioid addiction to environmental degradation. In this candid interview, Robert describes the challenges of encouraging community-wide fellowship in a politically divisive era and celebrates the role of art and artists in creating safe spaces for people of all stripes to celebrate their authentic selves.https://www.robertgipe.com/
Interview by Kris Peters,After managing to steer clear of this side of the world since 2016, North Carolina stoner/sludge/doom outfit Weedeater have declared 2024 the year of the Weed as they prepare to traverse Australia with their good mates King Parrot for the When The Weed Meets The Speed Australian Tour kicking off on November 6.No strangers to touring overseas together - as recent as last US Summer and as far back as 2015 - this will be the two band's first tour of this country together in what promises to be an entertaining, energy charged and musically brutal run of shows. While polar opposites of the musical spectrum, Weedeater and King Parrot connect where it matters. Live, loud, and in front of an audience.Just to make sure the needle of chaos pushes into the red, Astrodeath and Choof will join the party as the bands play 11 shows in 12 days from one side of the country to the other.HEAVY spent some time with Weedeater for a chat ahead of the tour, starting with why the boys have neglected Australian fans for the last eight years."We're not attempting to neglect you," they assured. "I'm not sure if you're aware, but it's kind of far away from where we live (laughs). We love Australia. We've always had a good time there, but it's not easy to get there, and it costs a lot of money to do so. It's a big pain in the ass, but when we get there, we have a damn good time. I would love to ask you a question. Why have you not come to North Carolina and visited me?"One point Weedeater. Zero points HEAVY.In the full interview we discuss what to expect from Weedeater's shows, their friendship with King Parrot, some tales from the road, their brand of hot sauce and if any will be making its way Down Under, the term 'sludge-toned tar-heels' and what it means, new music, three songs to listen to in order to know the band better, future plans and more.KING PARROT + WEEDEATER + ASTRODEATH + CHOOF“WHEN THE WEED MEETS THE SPEED” AUSTRALIAN TOUR, NOVEMBER 2024Wednesday, November 6th - Mo's Desert Clubhouse, Gold Coast QLDThursday, November 7th - The Triffid, Brisbane QLDFriday, November 8th - King Street Warehouse, Newcastle, NSWSaturday, November 9th - Manning Bar, Sydney, NSWSunday, November 10th - The Basement, Canberra ACTTuesday, November 12th - Volta, Ballarat VICWednesday, November 13th – Barwon Club, Geelong VICThursday, November 14th – Singing Bird, Frankston VIC (All Ages)Friday, November 15th – Max Watts, Melbourne VICSaturday, November 16th – Lion Arts Factory, Adelaide, SASunday, November 17th – Magnet House, Perth, WATickets on sale now: www.kingparrot.oztix.com.auBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Join Matt and I as we catch up with the King Parrot frontman as he walks the streets of NY while the band was on tour supporting Weedeater, Lamb of God and Pantera! We ask the hard hitting question as to why Matt cut all of his hair off now after spending the last few years growing it out. We talk about how it's been for the band to support Pantera in arenas, how Matt and the guys go about translating their live show which is usually played right on top of fans, to something that massive. We also talk a bit about how it's been bringing his kids to King Parrot shows and what they think of seeing their dad in a different capacity than they're used to and more in this quick chat. Rachel takes time out in the beginning to voice her concern with her concern with parents not paying attention to their school age children's health needs. Being a nurse, this is a passionate subject for her. It's a different departure but we feel it is a necessary one. Why you ask, do you need to keep those emotions in control? With divorce being a turbulent time, feelings of anger, sadness, fear, etc. are normal but letting them rule you can lead to poor decision making or get in the way of moving forward in a healthy way. Getting your emotions in check helps you process them effectively without letting them control you. Strong emotions like bitterness or a desire for revenge can fuel conflict with your former spouse, which may complicate the divorce process, worsen the emotional toll, and negatively impact any children involved. Keeping emotions in check helps minimize conflict. Looking after your emotional well-being helps you heal and protects your mental health. Uncontrolled emotions may lead to anxiety, depression or unhealthy coping mechanisms. Managing your feelings can help you grieve the loss of the relationship in a healthier way. Regulation of emotions allows you to stay focused. The divorce process involves many practical steps such as dividing assets, determining custody arrangements, reorganizing finances, etc. Being able to stay level-headed allows you to make sound decisions. Discussions in this podcast: Anger is David's favorite emotion Feral kids that grunt Find your village and let go of the jesters Boundaries You can control only how you respond Mindfulness Own your bullsh!t The Hoe Phase Positive coping mechanisms Professional help Self-care is the most important thing Weedeater and Roundup Anniversaries Getting emotions under control makes room for positive feelings like optimism, self-confidence and the ability to see life after divorce as an opportunity for growth and new beginnings. This provides the mindset and motivation needed to move forward.

I know we've technically already covered this album (in it's "Jerusalem" incarnation), but when Michael Makela, lead singer of Bongzilla, asked if we could cover the original unbroken cut, known as Dopesmoker, who was I to stand in his way? Some listeners might not know this, but Bongzilla is from the same city as Flyover State Park, and is one of the great doom/stoner metal groups around today. Brandishing perhaps the greatest handle in photography history, Dylan sits down with Tomoko Inoue, perhaps better known by her moniker, The Tinfoil Biter, to delve into her history as a concert photographer. A chance opportunity to photograph Down while in Japan opened the gate and her dynamic shots have highlighted the already heavy presence of such artists as Crowbar, High on Fire, Child Bite, Weedeater, and Osees. We go through some select sets of her photos while also touching on the highs and lows of living in Michigan in the 90s, how drawing lead her to photography, the dreaded purple light, knowing when to put the camera down, and randomly becoming acquainted with Henry Wilson from Floor*. You can check out more of Tomoko's photography over at her website. *NOTE: There was a slip of the tongue and we meant to say Henry WILSON of Floor. Mr. Vasquez is correctly from Saint Vitus, not Floor. Our bad!
In this episode Kyle sits down with Dixie Dave of Weedeater to discuss bourbon, life on the road and water parks. Long live dirt weed!

Since forming as teenagers at the College of William & Mary in 2005, heavy rockers Caustic Casanova have experienced their fair share of ups and downs. Having weathered lineup changes, life threatening injuries and relentless DIY touring, the group's highly eclectic sound has made them favorites in a crowded scene. Stereo Embers wrote of the Washington, DC based upstarts: “Caustic Casanova is one of the most excitingly innovative bands on the planet…the band's at home in psych, prog, metal, punk, and seemingly every other genre in the galaxy.” 2013 saw the band almost fall apart when drummer/vocalist Stefanie Zaenker endured serious injuries to her wrists that put her ability to drum in jeopardy. However, Caustic Casanova persevered, and by 2014, Zaenker, alongside bassist/vocalist Francis Beringer and guitarist Andrew Yonki had opened for sludge titans Kylesa and were signed to their label, Retro Futurist Records, allowing them to take things to the next level. The band toured heavily in support of their critically acclaimed 2015 LP Breaks, slugging it out both with Kylesa and on their own. Between 2013 and 2018 they also released a trio of EPs for their Pantheon series, where they paired original material with classics by Pentagram, the Melvins and Weedeater. This hard work led to a deal with Magnetic Eye Records, who in October 2019 released CC's latest record God How I Envy The Deaf, which won two Washington Area Music Awards in 2020, for best hard rock album and best hard rock song (“Filth Castle”). As CC looks to the future, they're already recording the next album with their longtime producer J. Robbins (Jawbox) at Magpie Cage Recording Studio in Baltimore. Newly a four piece with the addition of guitarist Jake Kimberley, this relentlessly loud band is excited to see what sonic alchemies their genre mashing and off the wall songwriting will conjure up next. Road hardened rock and roll warriors through and through, Caustic Casanova plan on showcasing their “muscular, riff-roaring, bass-fuzzed blend of metal and hard rock, flavored with doses of noise and stoned psychedelia” (Creative Loafing) all across the world.

This week we bring you part 5 of our exploration of the Heavy Metal Mixtape, a limited edition cassette released on Night Demon Records in October 2015. The band explains why there was no pre-order or pre-release hype for the Mixtape, and how that meshes with Night Demon's marketing philosophy. They also talk about the importance of featuring bands on the Mixtape with whom Night Demon has a direct relationship. The bulk of the episode is devoted to the Mixtape contributions of Visigoth, Savage Master, Salvacion and Venomous Maximus. In each case, you will hear detailed commentary from Jarvis, as well as band members, about the band's history, its connection to Night Demon, and the significance and meaning of the song. There is a heartfelt tribute to the late, dearly missed Carlos Denogean. And a couple of audio clips are discussed, including a must-hear story about Jarvis's 12th birthday party.Become a subscriber today at nightdemon.net/subscriber. For our normally scheduled chapter this week, August and Dylan have done another album commentary episode on the much loved Weedeater album, God Luck & Good Speed. As they peel back the layers of this very sweaty onion, they talk about how Spelljammer made August's band break up, a very drunk Psycho Las Vegas set, Benjamin Jones: International Man of Mystery, coordinating Nine Inch Dong shirts, pairing cough syrup with cheese, seeing Gwar at a pop punk festival, biblical snow storms, how to get Dylan to listen to Skynyrd, why you should always skip hockey for Weedeater, Bruce Dickinson in a sandwich shop, and getting shit faced at Sabbath. Please note that the actual commentary starts at 00:19:39 and should be played in sync with the record. If you listen to this without the album playing, well, you're a weirdo. You can buy Weedeater merch and music over at their Bandcamp page.
We've got a 4/20 bonus episode for y'all and we couldn't think of a more fitting guest other than Bongzilla! Vocalist and now bassist Mike "Muleboy" Mikela dialed in from the dankest corner of the Cheese State itself to help the cipher celebrate the holiday in style. Together they go on about how a little weed would go a long way for all, how growing the holy harvest has changed over the years, the first (and the worst) time Muleboy smoked, the stray hippie effect, why they are more about the music now than partying, being bros with Weedeater, the unfortunate Temples Festival experience that propelled them back together, his favorite methods of attaining extreme altitudes, 4/20 views, lighting one up for John Hopkins putting Weedsconsin together, and why we owe it all to the blues. Support Bongzilla on their Bandcamp page and over at Heavy Psych Sounds Track featured is "Sundae Driver" off of Weedsconsin, available now! Keep an eye out for Bongzilla's side project, Sweet Grass Outlaws, in the future as well as the elusive Weedeater side gig, Bar Stool.

Iconic artist Brian Mercer joins us for this chapter of the diary. Brian's work has graced the album covers, tour posters, and merch not just for iconic heavy music acts like High on Fire, Mastodon, and Isis, but well into the broader musical scope for artists like Marilyn Manson, Skrillex, and Eric Church. He talks about being a child of Pushead, BMX, and comic books, incorporating nature into his work in an effort to combat anxiety, navigating the tricky world of logos and fonts, tapping into his family's Columbia Record House collection, not giving a shit if "rock is dead", his reaction to the Mercer Wall, why Mastodon can do whatever they want, embracing Gritty, Weedeater's sloths and monkeys, and how he can't control what people do, but will still call some bullshit. You can see more Brian's work at his website and pick up prints and other works at his Big Cartel page.

DOOM AROUND THE WORLD ~Season 1, Episode 2~ This is the second episode in a new series devoted solely to doom metal in all its variations of gray. Lacie Bishop makes a return to curate her second playlist for Doomed & Stoned. Like the wildly popular first, this is a smartly assembled selection of sweet 'n' sour songs -- this time by Windand, Thou, Cough, Fister, Noothgrush, Graves At Sea, Unearthly Trance, even Kadavar (yes, Kadavar can doom with the best of them!)...and that's just the tip of this 18-track iceberg for doomers to get their doom on. Yes, we want to introduce doomers to real doom, so share with someone you know who has taken the black pill and is bummed out beyond recourse! PLAYLIST INTRO (00:00) 1. If you've seen a kick ass show within the umbrella of doom metal or stoner rock, John Hopkins was likely the reason for that. Having tour managed and done front of house for stalwarts like Weedeater, Melvins, High on Fire, and Sleep, John has been all over the world with a plethora of bands and talks about getting a road education as a sound board operator, the trials and tribulations of the journey, missing the little things due to COVID-19 life adjustments, his favorite venues, and passing the time with conspiracy deep dives.A Message from the High Priest: This episode was originally recorded on April 6th.Photo originally taken by Tim Bugbee (Tinnitus Photography)

Grail is on the podcast today . This interview is very different . None of the band members at the time of this recording were over 17 years old . They are young , hungry and ready to usher in the next generation of doom bands . Even at a young age they can command a stage and have been tearing up the Arizona doom metal scene . Are you tired of not knowing how to tie a tie, or start a weedeater? Then boy is this the episode for you!
THE DOOMED & STONED SHOW -Season 5, Episode 12- "Don't harsh my mellow, man" they used to say a lot in the '70s. We've all experienced a little rain on our parade rained on, gotten salt rubbed into the wound, that kind of thing -- whether from an micromanaging boss, a disgruntled customer, or the sudden call from a collection agency for a debt you didn't know you had. You know the feeling well. As a wise philosopher once said, "It's a bittersweet symphony this life. Trying to make ends meet, you're a slave to the money then you die." Bourdain's Work. Or Once Again, We Must Be Speakers for the Dead. We interrupt your regularly scheduled programming to bring you a semi-regular segment here at Edacious. A segment where I rant about a food topic so much on my mind, it warrants its own episode. Anthony Bourdain can't be summed up in a soundbite or a quote. His body of work stands for his name. Nor will I add anything better than what's already been written or said. There are hundreds of Speakers better than me, including Mike Costello of 100 Days in Appalachia. Bourdain wasn't even my favorite food writer, but he was the door. The very first door I opened onto a world I knew nothing about and one I'm so glad I stepped through. I loved his work, honest, ballsy, gritty, truth-telling. Sentences with a heft that sat on the page like granite. I fucking loved the way he wrote, and what he stood for. Connecting over food. He did this every minute of every day. And he taught me to do the same. Bourdain believed when someone cooks you a meal, they are revealing something about themselves. I believe that too. Cooking or baking for someone else is the highest form of love there is. Which is why I chose a decade ago to honor the millions of folks who do so each and every day. And while I can't add anything to the conversation, I do talk about it. Wonder about it. And I urge you all to remember self-care. Maybe get off the phone once in a while, take a walk, see some stuff. Do some shit. Live your life. Preferably with periods of solitude in nature. Don't work so damn much. Maybe if Tony had, we'd still have him. Be well. Big Love. p.s. Did you snag a Bourdain book at my last food writing class? Check the flyleaf. It might be a signed copy ;) Don't say I never did nothin for ya... If you are feeling depressed or suicidal. Get help. Ask someone, even if they're a stranger. Don't deal with these feelings alone. The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is 1-800-273-8255. SHOW NOTES – Links to resources talked about during the podcast: Weedeater by Robert Gipe - Author of Trampoline, Gipe's new illustrated novel is heartbreaking, truth-telling, and just downright hilarious. On this very special episode, we welcome our very special and first-ever guest, Amy Shostak! Amy is comedy jewel and metal wizard, and leads the lads down the hazy path of Stoner and Sludge metal! In this episode we: Roll up some jazz cabbage and talk about Weedeater's cool carny vocals; Blaze some Devil's lettuce and talk about how Sleep makes you want to put out burning pillows with wet blankets; Puff on a left-handed cigarette and talk about the Melvins creating a visceral, two-drummer-induced dreamlike state; Dole out some dank-ass nugs and talk about how Kylesa's worth a road trip to Georgia; AND become total weed-heads talking about Mastodon leggings and how much the book Moby Dick totally, totally sucks. Co-hosted by VANESSA BECK. For this episode we were fortunate to share an hour with a true renaissance woman of the earth: NANCE KLEHM. Nance has been an ecological systems designer, landscaper, horticultural consultant, and permacultural grower for more than two decades. Her approach is centered on instigating change by activating already existent communities, and her work demonstrates her lifelong commitment to redefining the way human populations coexist with plant and animal systems on this planet. Vanessa and I discovered Nance's world through a new documentary film called WEEDEATER, which is a beautifully-produced slice of Nance and her universe. Learn more about Nance's film WEEDEATER, her summer camp PACHAMANKA, her social ecology project THE GROUND RULES, and much, much more here: spontaneousvegetation.net P.S. Created by three young filmmakers; Eden Batki, Marty Windahl, and edited by Amy Von Harrington, Nance Klehm is filmed in cinematically gorgeous shots showing who she is; a steward of the earth. She is respected internationally for her work on land politics and growing for fertility. The film is shot in urban and rural landscapes with Klehm giving broad strokes. Nance was honored as one of Utne Reader’s Twelve Visionaries Who Are Changing Your World in 2012, Chicago Tribune, MSN Money Weekend America program, BBC Radio Canada, Chicago Public Radio, Le Devoir (Montreal) and La Raza (Chicago).
