Every founder needs to hear this: A Bad Investor is Worse Than No Investor. Before you start chasing venture capital, you must understand the risks. In this interview, M&A expert Scott Kelly explains why bootstrapped founders of seven, eight, and even nine-figure brands often love their lives, while many VC-backed founders are miserably stressed. We break down the cautionary tale of FanDuel, whose founders got "little or nothing" after raising hundreds of millions, versus MailChimp, whose founders kept 98% of the proceeds from their exit after bootstrapping. This is a must-watch for any entrepreneur deciding how to fund their business.Book a 1-on-1 advisory session with me to apply these principles to your business: https://calendly.com/wltb/advisory

You need to make sure you have the right carpenter or the right instrument and the right professional playing that instrument. So I think how you price that is the value add that you bring to this tool that's AI." – Scott Kelly "You have to spend time getting to know them. In this podcast, shareholders Nonnie Shivers and Scott Kelly delve into the enforcement activities after a preliminary injunction blocked key provisions (including the certification requirement) of two executive orders (EOs) issued to eliminate “illegal” diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs and initiatives. Scott (who co-chairs the firm's Government Contracting and Reporting Practice Group) and Nonnie (who co-chairs the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Compliance Practice Group) discuss the implications of the national injunction recently issued by a federal judge, the ongoing enforcement activities not halted by the injunction, and the broader impact on federal contractors and DEI programs across all employers. Nonnie and Scott also highlight the importance of staying informed and assessing risk tolerance in light of the evolving legal landscapes, which employers can do with Ogletree's New Administration Resource Hub.

Between the groundbreaking missions he's been a part of with his identical twin brother, Arizona Senator Mark Kelly, and spending over 500 days in space, Scott has inevitably learned a thing or two about staying mentally strong, striving for greatness, and remaining curious about the world. Scott joins Benjamin to share his thoughts on what it's like preparing for space exploration, and where he believes the nation currently stands on the desire for both individual and societal progress. FAR, FAR AWAY: 3/4: The Next 500 Years: Engineering Life to Reach New Worlds, by Christopher E. Mason. https://www.amazon.com/Next-500-Years-Engineering-Worlds/dp/0262044404 An argument that we have a moral duty to explore other planets and solar systems—because human life on Earth has an expiration date. Inevitably, life on Earth will come to an end, whether by climate disaster, cataclysmic war, or the death of the sun in a few billion years. To avoid extinction, we will have to find a new home planet, perhaps even a new solar system, to inhabit. In this provocative and fascinating book, Christopher Mason argues that we have a moral duty to do just that. As the only species aware that life on Earth has an expiration date, we have a responsibility to act as the shepherd of life-forms—not only for our species but for all species on which we depend and for those still to come (by accidental or designed evolution). Mason argues that the same capacity for ingenuity that has enabled us to build rockets and land on other planets can be applied to redesigning biology so that we can sustainably inhabit those planets. And he lays out a 500-year plan for undertaking the massively ambitious project of reengineering human genetics for life on other worlds. As they are today, our frail human bodies could never survive travel to another habitable planet. Mason describes the toll that long-term space travel took on the astronaut Scott Kelly, who returned from a year on the International Space Station with changes to his blood, bones, and genes. Mason proposes a ten-phase, 500-year program that would engineer the genome so that humans can tolerate the extreme environments of outer space—with the ultimate goal of achieving human settlement of new solar systems. He lays out a roadmap of which solar systems to visit first, and merges biotechnology, philosophy, and genetics to offer an unparalleled vision of the universe to come. 1956

In this podcast recorded at Ogletree Deakins' national Workplace Strategies seminar, Nonnie Shivers (shareholder, Phoenix) and Scott Kelly (shareholder, Birmingham) discuss what the Supreme Court's ruling that race-based college admissions are unconstitutional means for diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts in the workplace. Scott and Nonnie discuss the legal framework for employers to consider when evaluating their voluntary DEI programming, including how to conduct a risk assessment of DEI programs, conflicting state laws, and questions specific to federal contractors. The speakers offer practical tips for designing and sustaining legally defensible DEI initiatives, including creative strategies to meet company goals without running afoul of the law.
