Boston-based alt-rock band Letters to Cleo made its name in the 1990s and had its biggest hit in 1994 with "Here & Now." It split in 2000, reunited briefly in 2007, and it now exists-ish, coming together each November to play a series of shows. It doesn't occupy the same space in the band members' careers that it once did, but they found reasons to continue to play together. This week, Alex Rawls talks to guitarist Michael Eisenstein about the state of the band, its plans, and how they led to this year's EP, OK Christmas. He discusses why it happened now and not sooner, and how the gigs they've done since made it possible now. After that, Alex reviews new Christmas releases from the Peter Holsapple Combo, I Don't Know How but They Found Me, Drew Holcomb and the Neighbors, and Rebecca Angel. For full-length videos from these songs and more reviews, visit a recent reviews column at MySpiltMilk.com. This is the last episode of season two of 12 Songs. It will return for season three on the first Wednesday after Labor Day. If you haven't done so yet, please subscribe to the podcast at Apple Podcasts, Google Play, Stitcher and Spotify. That will help others find out about the pod and make sure that you don't miss an episode when 12 Songs returns.
It's Thursday, and theater critic J. Wynn Rousuck joins us for another of her weekly reviews of the Maryland stage. Today, Judy describes the new North American touring production of Jesus Christ Superstar, the iconic Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice musical that began as a 1970 concept album, debuted on Broadway in 1971, and is currently lighting up the stage during an eight-performance production at Baltimore's Hippodrome Theatre. Fresh off its hit run in London, this Olivier Award-winning new production weaves the dramatic events of Christ's last weeks of life with a driving rock and funk score. Directed at the Hippodrome by Timothy Sheader -- who has streamlined the 50-year old show for modern audiences -- the powerful rock opera features the well-known hits "Superstar" and "I Don't Know How to Love Him," and a large ensemble cast, with lead performances by Aaron LaVigne as Jesus, James Delisco Beeks as Judas, and Jenna Rubaii as Mary. Scenic and costume design is by Tom Scutt. Music Supervision is by Tom Deering. Choreography credits go to Drew McOnie. Jesus Christ Superstar continues at The Hippodrome through Sunday, December 22.
Regardless of Age, I Don't Know How to Do Me! I've never known how to be me. And now that I have a whole repertoire of experience that points to who I've been and who I've tried to be, it doesn’t really help. Because I choose to do these podcasts I keep having to attend to the truth of me and how it's been working for me. I’m not by any means a guru. I do practice what I believe gurus might practice, though. Why? Well, I believe essentially that they have trained themselves to have a pretty good life, one that is peaceful and fulfilling. That’s what I want for me, and that’s what I want for you! As part of the practice of creating these Podcasts, I take an inventory quite regularly so that I'm not just talking a talk, but I'm actually walking my walk. I question when and how I’m listening to my inner guru; I question whether that inner guru is actually me. Sometimes I can’t tell. Sometimes I spend time - hours, days or weeks discerning who the hell that is talking with me. Listening to my inner guru doesn’t mean that life is going to be easy. It just means I have some guidance that is better than what I’d be getting if I listened to my fears. Truthfully I don’t know who I am and I don’t know what I’m doing. Because I live more and more in the present moment I can only know myself in this moment. I believe I’m here on this planet to be living my own path one step at a time. This practice requires me to let go of my past and not design a future. I’m not an expert at this. And where I am today is all I can master. The quote, “I am the Master of my Destiny,” really only means that I’m able to be present in this moment with little or no fear of what tomorrow will bring. Is that who I am? Hmmmm. Great question! - - - - For more blogs, books and videos, or if you are interesting in coaching or training with Dr. Rosie, check out her website: www.theparadigmshifts.com
The Songs to the Unknown God Series intends to listen to the cultural cries of secular music and present how the God revealed in Jesus comes to answer that cry. This series takes its inspiration from a story in Acts 17, where the apostle Paul, Christianity’s first missionary, is travelling through Athens. While walking around the Areopagus, also known as Mars Hill, a place known for many idols to many Gods (specifically Mars, the God of War), Paul stumbles across an altar with the inscription “to an unknown God." Upon seeing this, Paul proclaims to the Greeks the God they have yet to know, -- Jesus Christ. The best part is that he proclaims Jesus to them using the poetry and philosophy of the Greeks. He doesn’t quote Jewish prophets or followers of Jesus. In fact, he goes on to quote current Greek poets Epimenides and Aratus word for word to explain about the true creator God revealed in Jesus Christ. He uses the language of Greek culture to explain who God is. The secular song investigated in this sermon is I Don't Know How to Pray by X Ambassadors.
Most people have experienced some sort of homesickness. In this episode we talk about both short and long forms of homesickness as I arrive in NYC and settle into a full blown state of missing the west coast. We bear witness to a love story as Vanessa Pamela Friedman moves to the east coast and writes a million love letters to Portland, OR. My sister Shelly looks into her past and articulates different ways homesickness has appeared in her life. Some tears are shed, Cheryl Strayed is mentioned, and questions are asked: Is homesickness more about missing people or a place? You can follow Vanessa on Twitter @vanessapamela and on Instagram @vanessatakesphotos, sign up for her newsletter "I Miss You" and view the newsletter archive to read all the "Home" newsletters (the letter quoted in this episode was "Home, VII"). #108: Former financial advisor Joe Saul-Sehy joins me to answer audience questions about investing strategies, early retirement, and tax planning. Whitnee calls in with this: I'm 31, and my husband and I save half of our combined income. We've maxed out our H.S.A. accounts and we're getting an employer match in our 401k. We have $80,000 stashed as cash in a checking or low-yield savings account. We're paying nearly $2,000 per month for insurance policies, most of which is a whole life insurance policy. We have a rental property that cash flows $210 per month; we pocket $150 and use the other $60 as an extra principal payment. What should we do differently? How can we learn about investing? What funds should we focus on? Should we sell our rental property and invest the proceeds, or hold onto this? If we hold, should we focus on repaying the mortgage as quickly as possible? Kim asks about the 4 percent withdrawal rule in early retirement. When you're calculating your savings goal, do you need to account for the tax implications of this withdrawal? Any tips on how to optimize this? Susan says: I loved your explanation about how to use a Roth Conversion Ladder to avoid paying stiff early-withdrawal penalties in retirement. (Episode 94). Here's my follow-up question: How long should my money sit inside of a Traditional IRA before I convert it to a Roth IRA? We tackle these three questions on today's episode.
