In this thought-provoking episode of Project Synapse, host Jim and his friends Marcel Gagne and John Pinard delve into the complexities of artificial intelligence, especially in the context of cybersecurity. The discussion kicks off by revisiting a blog post by Sam Altman about reaching a 'Gentle Singularity' in AI development, where the progress towards artificial superintelligence seems inevitable. They explore the idea of AI surpassing human intelligence and the implications of machines learning to write their own code. Throughout their engaging conversation, they emphasize the need to integrate security into AI systems from the start, rather than as an afterthought, citing recent vulnerabilities like Echo Leak and Microsoft Copilot's Zero Click vulnerability. Derailing into stories from the past and pondering philosophical questions, they wrap up by urging for a balanced approach where speed and thoughtful planning coexist, and to prioritize human welfare in technological advancements. This episode serves as a captivating blend of storytelling, technical insights, and ethical debates. 00:00 Introduction to Project Synapse 00:38 AI Vulnerabilities and Cybersecurity Concerns 02:22 The Gentle Singularity and AI Evolution 04:54 Human and AI Intelligence: A Comparison 07:05 AI Hallucinations and Emotional Intelligence 12:10 The Future of AI and Its Limitations 27:53 Security Flaws in AI Systems 30:20 The Need for Robust AI Security 32:22 The Ubiquity of AI in Modern Society 32:49 Understanding Neural Networks and Model Security 34:11 Challenges in AI Security and Human Behavior 36:45 The Evolution of Steganography and Prompt Injection 39:28 AI in Automation and Manufacturing 40:49 Crime as a Business and Security Implications 42:49 Balancing Speed and Security in AI Development 53:08 Corporate Responsibility and Ethical Considerations 57:31 The Future of AI and Human Values

In this episode, Nicholas Thompson, CEO of The Atlantic, offers a sweeping and deeply personal exploration of how AI is reshaping creativity, leadership, and human connection. From his daily video series The Most Interesting Thing in Tech to his marathon training powered by ChatGPT, Nicholas shares how he integrates AI into both work and life—not just as a tool, but as a thought partner. He reflects on the emotional complexity of AI relationships, the tension between cognitive augmentation and cognitive offloading, and what it means to preserve our “unwired” intelligence in an increasingly automated world. The conversation ventures into leadership during disruption, the ethics of AI-generated content, and the future of journalism in a world where agents may consume your content on your behalf.Nicholas also shares how he's cultivating third spaces, building muscle memory for analog thinking, and encouraging experimentation across his team—all while preparing for an uncertain future where imagination, not automation, might be our greatest asset.Whether you're a tech-savvy leader, a content creator, or just trying to stay grounded in the age of generative AI, this episode is full of honest reflections and hard-earned insights on how to navigate what's next.Key Takeaways:Your “unwired” intelligence is your AI superpower — The more human skills you build—like deep focus, emotional presence, and analog thinking—the better you'll be at wielding AI. Thompson argues that cultivating these unwired abilities isn't just about staying grounded—it's about unlocking the full potential of the tools.Don't fight the storm—gear up and adapt — AI is already transforming media and creative industries. Thompson compares it to a coming storm: you can't stop it by yelling at the clouds. Instead, embrace it, understand it deeply, and make strategic decisions based on where it's heading.Leadership means showing, not just telling — As a CEO navigating disruption, Thompson doesn't just advocate for AI exploration—he models it. From training staff on GPTs to walking the halls and testing ideas live, he treats leadership as a practice of visible experimentation and continuous learning.AI relationships can't replace real connection—but they can confuse it — Whether it's logging meals with a bot or losing a personalized Enneagram coach to a reset, Thompson highlights the emotional pull of AI and the dangers of relying on digital companions over human ones. Staying socially connected, especially through “third spaces,” is more important than ever.LinkedIn: Nicholas Thompson | LinkedInThe Atlantic: World Edition - The AtlanticWebsite: Home - Nicholas ThompsonX: nxthompson (@nxthompson)Strava: Cycling & Biking App - Tracker, Trails, Training & More | StravaCaitlin Flanagan – Sex Without Women: Article:SexWithoutWomen-TheAtlantic00:00 Introduction to Nicholas Thompson00:11 Navigating the Information Overload01:10 Daily Tech Insights and Tools02:10 Using AI for Content Creation04:39 AI as a Personal Trainer08:02 Emotional Connections with AI12:12 The Risks of AI Relationships16:17 Preparing for AGI and Cognitive Offloading30:26 AI's Impact on Leadership31:10 Navigating AI Competitors32:01 Internal AI Strategies32:49 Ethical Considerations in AI Usage34:07 AI in Journalism and Writing36:32 Practical AI Applications40:27 Balancing AI and Human Skills49:27 Future of AI in Media53:50 Final Thoughts and Reflections

Dr. T and Truth Fairy welcome Greg Wrenn, a former Alabama state representative and long-time health policy advocate, who shares insights into how he became interested in the therapeutic use of psychedelics through personal research and professional exposure. Greg recently wrote a book called “Mothership” about coral reef research, ecological crisis, and his personal PTSD healing journey with ayahuasca. He discusses portions of the book and his experiences with Truth and Dr. T.  Greg explores the growing interest in psychedelic-assisted therapy, particularly its potential to help individuals who struggle with mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, and PTSD. He addresses the shift from viewing psychedelics as taboo to recognizing their potential under controlled, clinical settings. His personal stories, alongside those shared by Truth, highlight the positive impact psychedelic therapy can have and how his passion for the issue has been fueled. Truth Fairy, Dr. T, and Greg share concerns about the challenges of implementing beneficial psychedelic healing sessions, and they celebrate Greg's integration of tribal and liberating dance into the ayahuasca ceremony. They talk about the importance of regulation, ethical safeguards, and integration of Indigenous practices, and caution against the risks of commercialization. The episode is both vulnerable and informative, painting a hopeful picture of potential healing even in the face of difficult times.“You know, I'm no psychedelic evangelist. I don't think everyone should drink ayahuasca or work with psychedelics. I know I should, I know I need to. And so this is really important for my mission, which is to, I guess, spread a message of love and spread a message of the possibility of planetary healing, because planetary healing happens, at least with humanity, one brain at a time.” - Greg Wrenn__About Greg Wrenn:A former Stegner Fellow and Jones Lecturer at Stanford University, GREG WRENN is the author of the ayahuasca eco-memoir Mothership: A Memoir of Wonder and Crisis, an evidence-based account of his turning to coral reefs and psychedelic plants to heal from childhood trauma, and Centaur (U of Wisconsin Press 2013), which National Book Award-winning poet Terrance Hayes awarded the Brittingham Prize. Greg's work has appeared or is forthcoming in HuffPost, The New Republic, Al Jazeera, The Rumpus, LitHub, Writer's Digest, Kenyon Review, New England Review, The Iowa Review, and elsewhere. He has received awards and fellowships from the James Merrill House, the Bread Loaf Writers' Conference, the Vermont Studio Center, the Poetry Society of America, the Hermitage Artist Retreat, the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, and the Spiro Arts Center. On his Mothership book tour, he spoke to audiences around the world, including at Yale School of Medicine, the University of Utah School of Medicine, Vancouver Island University, and the University of Virginia School of Nursing. Greg has also been on numerous podcasts, including Levi Chambers's PRIDE, and was recently interviewed by Emmy Award-winning journalist Elizabeth Vargas on NewsNation and by Jane Garvey on Times Radio (UK). As an associate English professor at James Madison University, he teaches creative nonfiction, poetry, and environmental literature and directs the JMU Creative Writing Minor. He also teaches in the Memoir Certificate Program at Stanford Continuing Studies. As spiritual teachers, healers, and lightworkers, we have a sacred responsibility to adhere to certain ethical guidelines when we do our work. This episode of INNER WORK is a discussion of some of these ethical considerations, both as a suggestion for healers and lightworkers and as a guideline for when you're looking for and evaluating a healer, coach, or mentor to work with. Some key discussion points: what originally sparked me to create this epiode why it's SO key for healers, lightworkers, and spiritual teachers to dismantle the old paradigm of power over/power under (where the healer or teacher is presumed to have all the power and knowledge, and the client or student has none) why humility, groundedness, transparency, emotional stability, and integrity are essential qualities for teachers and healers (and how things can go wrong when these qualities are missing) the 5 TOP red flags to look out for when you're working with a teacher, coach, mentor, or healer **************** You're lovingly invited to join my email community and get access to my free Akashic Records Mini Course + weekly newsletter: https://josephinehardman.com/akashic-records-intro/ Explore the next round of my Akashic Records Certification Program: https://josephinehardman.com/work-with-me/akashic-records-certification-program/ Connect through my website: https://josephinehardman.com Thank you for being here, doing your inner work, and leading the way for others with your light.
