“Here And Now” Letters To Cleo may seemed to have suddenly shown up on the pop culture landscape in 1994, but the fact is, the Boston outfit had been grinding it out on the club since 1990. Their single “Here and Now” was an instant classic—a melodic dose of perfect pop stomp that showcased singer Hanley's powerful vocal delivery. The band tore through the ‘90s, releasing three perfect albums (Aurora Gory Alice, Wholesale Meats And Fishes and Go), appeared as the house band in 10 Things I Hate About You, played SXSW, and playing with everyone from Cheap Trick to Neds Atomic Dustbin. Oh, and I almost forgot: In 1996, playing Mary Magladene, Hanley co-starred with Extreme's Gary Cherone in the Boston Rock Opera's performance of Jesus Christ Superstar. In the early 2000's, Hanley was the singing voice for Rachel Leigh Cook in Josie and the Pussycats and though the band called it a day that same year, they did record 15 new and original songs for the Kids' WB cartoon Generation O! That will become important in a second, but just to round out the corners here, Hanley toured as a back-up singer for Miley Cyrus' Hannah Montana venture, put out a handful of great solo releases, sang the National Anthem at Gillette stadium for the Patriots and got to work on her new career, composing all-original songs for animated TV shows like Doc McStufins, DC Super Hero Girls, and Harvey Girls Forever, to name a few. How's that career going? Well, in 2022 Hanley won an Emmy for songwriting on We The People. So I'd say, not too shabby. On that front, she and her writing partners Michelle Lewis, Dan Petty and Charlton Pettus created Disney Jr.'s Kindergarten: The Musical and Hanley is also co-executive director of Songwriters of North America (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Songwriters_of_North_America), an LA-based non-profit which advocates for fair pay and other rights for songwriters. As for Letters to Cleo? Well, the band may no longer be a full-time concern, but they pop up here and there to play gigs. They just completed a mini-November tour and they have a show on Jan 9th in Madison at the Majestic. Get your tickets now. Well, listen to the show, THEN get your tickets. Or multi-task. Coming to town next weekend on Sunday, June 30, to the Magic Bag in Ferndale is a band that anyone who grew up in the nineties will definitely know. And if you don't, well, you should get acquainted with the alt-rock legendary sound of Letters to Cleo. The band has some new material to go with favorites like "I Want You to Want Me," "Here and Now," and "Cruel to Be Kind." To talk about the band, music, and the show, my guest is guitarist Michael Eisenstein. If it sounds like I'm a little excited, I'll put it on the table right now that I'm a fan. Michael shares stories along the band's journey — and the fresh energy they bring to their new material. We discuss how technology has changed the way they create music, contrasting the hands-on, live development of songs in the early nineties with today's digital collaboration. Michael reflects on the unique challenges and benefits of remote recording and how it has affected the band's creative process. We also get into the band's involvement with the iconic movie "Ten Things I Hate About You," sharing behind-the-scenes stories, including the thrilling experience of filming the closing shot from a helicopter. Michael talks about the gratifying experience of hearing from younger musicians who were influenced by Letters to Cleo and how the band continues to inspire the next generation of artists. Looking forward to their upcoming show at the Magic Bag, Michael shares his excitement about returning to the Midwest and performing in a venue that feels like home. He reminisces about past tours through Metro Detroit with other artists and the joy of reconnecting with old friends and fans. The intimate setting of the Magic Bag suits the band's vibe perfectly, promising a night of great music and energy. Don't miss Letters to Cleo at the Magic Bag in Ferndale on Sunday, June 30. On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got a pair of women who were prominent in the ‘90s alternative rock scene, and whose bands followed similar paths: Kay Hanley of Letters to Cleo and Louise Post of Veruca Salt. Our producer Myron Kaplan has been pushing to have Hanley as a guest for ages, and of course singing the praises of both Letters to Cleo and Hanley's solo work—plus letting me know that Hanley has had an incredible second musical career writing for children's TV shows, including popular shows like Doc McStuffins, for which she won a Peabody Award. Hanley also won a songwriting Emmy for her work on last year's animated series We The People. She's still rocking in Letters to Cleo, too, though the band was broken up for a good long while there—now they get together on occasion to make some noise and play a few shows every November. Sounds nice to me. Check out the song “Back to Nebraska“ right here. The other half of today's conversation is Louise Post, who was the co-frontperson of another ‘90s alt-rock titan, Veruca Salt. Together with her songwriting partner Nina Gordon, Post caused a huge stir back then, coming out of the gate (the gate being Chicago) with a ton of buzz and an incredible single called “Seether.” As you'll hear in this conversation, the machinations of the music biz caused some real strife, and Gordon left the band. Post soldiered on with some great Veruca Salt music before things fizzled, but there's a happy ending: Gordon returned in 2015 with the rest of the original lineup. And even better: Post has just released a firecracker of a solo album called Sleepwalker, which sounds grown up but still rocking in all the right ways. Check out “What About.” In this chat, Post and Hanley talk about the early days and seeing each other play; Hanley gushes over Post's new record, and they talk about living through that moment in the ‘90s alt-rock world when women were undeniably in the driver's seat. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Kay Hanley and Louise Post for chatting. If you liked what you heard, please follow Talkhouse on your favorite podcasting platform, and check out all the written goodness on this very website. This episode was produced by this week's special guest host Myron Kaplan, and the Talkhouse theme is composed and performed by the Range. See you next time!

Josie & The Pussycats is a musical comedy film released in 2001, based on the Archie Comics series and Hanna-Barbera cartoon of the same name. The film starred Rachael Leigh-Cook, Rosario Dawson, Tara Reid, Alan Cumming, and Parker Posey, and was directed by Harry Elfont and Deborah Kaplan. The film followed the adventures of the eponymous band as they attempt to achieve and eventually navigate stardom, while a conspiracy involving subliminal messaging lurks in the backdrop. The film featured a soundtrack of original rock songs written by professional songwriters like Adam Schlesinger, Adam Duritz, and Anna Waronker, among others, and featured a vocal performance by Kay Hanley of the power pop band Letters To Cleo. Though not a hit upon its release, it has since gone on to become a cult favorite for its sharp satire of commercialism. On an all new Hell Is A Musical, Lilz and Scott are joined by Kendra Beltran, writer for Collider, MTV Geek, and Cartoon Brew, as well as the host of the podcast Crushgasm. The three of them take in a screening of Josie & The Pussycats, debate the secret genius behind the film, shower praise upon MVP Alan Cumming, and REALLY work on their pronunciation....with Lilz and Scott!
Coming off the hit "Here and Now" from their debut Aurora Gory Alice, Letters To Cleo followed-up with the equally catchy Wholesale Meats and Fish. Lead single "Awake," with it's handclaps and catchy hook by lead singer Kay Hanley, is just one of many power-pop adjacent tunes that lean more towards the noisy side of the genre inhabited by The Posies and Matthew Sweet. But to pin down LTC would be a mistake, as the opening ripper "Demon Rock" demonstrates, or the sixties-infused "Little Rosa" demonstrate. The band packs a nice sonic punch, even when diverging from comfortable sounds for quieter moments that are hit and miss. Ellie was hanging out with a few of her friends when she overheard one of them talking about growing up with a sister who was in a famous rock band. Ellie said, "I didn't know this about you! Who is your sister?" Ellie then learned that her friend, Elizabeth Hanley-Grande, is the younger sister of Kay Hanley, lead singer of the band Letters to Cleo, whose hit single "Here and Now" was featured on the Melrose Place soundtrack and reached No. 10 on the Billboard Modern Rock Singles chart right around the time when Ellie was a senior in high school, making it one of her go-to rock anthems. Mind. Blown. Fast forward to the amazing idea to have our first ever SISTERS episode! We talk about what it was like growing up in a house with five women sharing one bathroom, having a mother who was very scientific about the body but very Catholic about premarital sex, and whether one's menopausal journey does or does not mirror that of one's sisters. We also touch on aging in the music industry, firing your doctors when they are crap, and how it's possible to NEVER see your sister's boobs. Listen to this episode and then go listen to Kay's music. Your earholes will be so happy. It stands to reason — the longer you stay in the game of writing and performing music, the older your audience gets. But Kay Hanley's audience has only gotten younger. She went from pumping out the catchiest Cheap Trick influenced alterna-pop for the alterna-kids of the ‘90s in her band Letters To Cleo — to entertaining the kids of THOSE kids writing songs for shows such as “Doc McStuffins” and “DC Superhero Girls”. Along the way, she's managed to maintain a stellar solo career — and the debut entry in that career (“Cherry Marmalade”) just happens to turn 20 this year. So she's doing what we all do: Putting that shit out on vinyl and hitting the road. We've known Kay for a long time and there's nobody cooler. On this episode we forget to talk about Josie And The Pussycats, Hannah Montana, and Adam Scott — but we REMEMBER to talk about “10 Things I Hate About You”, Heath Ledger, Mike Denneen, her work with the Songwriters of North America (a foundation she co-founded, by the way), baseball, covering each other's songs, football, “Jesus Christ Superstar”, growing up across the street from the Wahlbergs, “Melrose Place”, Barry Manilow, and REAL football! We also put Kay's Rain Man-like ability for remembering lyrics to the Elvis Costello test.
Seattle-based photographer Mike Hipple joins us this episode, as we discuss his fantastic book "Lived Through That, '90s Musicians Today", featuring members of Nirvana, No Doubt, Jesus Jones, Lush, Letters To Cleo, Throwing Muses, The Posies, and more. If you're a fan of 90's alt-rock and are curious what your fave artists of the era are up to, this book is meant for you! We'll discuss Mike's methods of interviewing artists who may have been out of the public eye for a while, why these particular artists are still creative and vital, and the interesting trend of alt-rockers pivoting to careers creating very cool kid's music.
Somewhere around 1994, most of us found ourselves trying to decipher and sing-along to the rapid-fire chorus from vocalist Kay Hanley in "Here and Now" by Letters To Cleo. Decades later, I find myself fortunate enough to sit down with the Boston band's frontwoman on Waterproof Records to talk about her impressive career in music as a songwriter, performer, and the specific album that changed Kay's life for the better.
It is Steve's belief that 1990s soundtracks had a disproportional amount of cover songs on them. And this show is chock full of them. Take a listen and let me know what you think. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/lucila-zetina1/message

In an all out love fest, we look at the NBC mockumentary comedy Parks and Recreation! After arguing about nose-blowing, our hosts finally agree on something as they analyze the characters, friendships, and optimism that make Parks & Rec great. Correction: The band is called Letters To Cleo, not Letters From Cleo, as we said. Ben Wyatt would be so disappointed, but he’d forgive us, because that’s the kind of guy he is. Parks and Recreation (also known as Parks and Rec) is an American political satire mockumentary sitcom television series created by Greg Daniels and Michael Schur. The series aired on NBC from April 9, 2009, to February 24, 2015, for 125 episodes, over seven seasons. A special reunion episode aired on April 30, 2020. The series stars Amy Poehler as Leslie Knope, a perky, mid-level bureaucrat in the Parks Department of Pawnee, a fictional town in Indiana. The ensemble and supporting cast features Rashida Jones as Ann Perkins, Paul Schneider as Mark Brendanawicz, Aziz Ansari as Tom Haverford, Nick Offerman as Ron Swanson, Aubrey Plaza as April Ludgate, Chris Pratt as Andy Dwyer, Adam Scott as Ben Wyatt, Rob Lowe as Chris Traeger, Jim O'Heir as Garry "Jerry" Gergich, Retta as Donna Meagle, and Billy Eichner as Craig Middlebrooks.

This week Jess and Bowie chat with Kay Hanley from Letters to Cleo. Letters to Cleo emerged from the Boston rock scene in the early 90’s, having released three full length albums during their time together. You would recognize Letters to Cleo from the soundtracks to movies such as 10 Things I Hate About You, The Craft, Buffy The Vampire Slayer, and more. You would also recognize Kay as the singing voice of Josie from the movie Josie and The Pussycats! We’re thrilled to have Kay on the podcast as we chat about her start with LTC, her experience on set of filming 10 Things I Hate About You, and her post-band career writing songs for shows on Disney, Cartoon Network, Netflix, and more! www.babesbehindthebeats.com Instagram: @babesbehindthebeats Twitter: @babesbehindbeat The post Kay Hanley from Letters to Cleo first appeared on idobi Network.

While the 90s were dominated by the touring festival as opposed to the current day destination festival, the first half and second half had decidedly different approaches. Lollapalooza took a variety of artists from across genres with the intention of exposing artists across differing fanbases, whereas the Warped Tour, Ozzfest, H.O.R.D.E. Tour, and Lilith Fair each narrowed their focus. In the case of Lilith Fair, the simplistic history is that it was a female-centric folk tour, headlined by the likes of Sarah McLachlan, the Indigo Girls, Suzanne Vega, and Sheryl Crow. In reality, over the course of three years, the festival provided a much broader spectrum of female artists, including Queen Latifah, Bonnie Raitt, Letters To Cleo, Liz Phair, Dance Hall Crashers, K's Choice, Luscious Jackson, Nenah Cherry, The Pretenders, Missy Elliott, The Cardigans, Susanna Hoffs, Juliana Hatfield, and many many more. To help us revisit we invited back a pair of performers (Kay Hanley of Letters to Cleo and Jill Cuniff of Luscious Jackson) and a pair of attendees (friend of the show Matt Shiverdecker and show announcer Katie Minneci), along with special call-in guests performer Tracy Bonham and attendee John Cornish. Hello everyone. This week as the title suggest we discuss some more about Covid-19. The landscape of the nation is changing so quickly and because we only talk once a week we have to keep each other update on how it is affecting us. That being said we also discuss Westworld ep 2 of season 3. Josh and his wife watched a Netflix show called The English Game. It a show about soccer/football and how it was changed. LIST-A-RAMA-A-GO-GO: "A missed opportunity to talk about Sponge." (1992-1995) When it comes to pop culture, Bob and Tim are completists. Be it thirteen un-carded Dreaknok figures or Louise Simonson's run on X-Factor their collections are always the full body of work. Well, almost always, as there was a moment in the mid 90s when they fell hard for some albums without following the artists. Its an audio anomaly they hope to unravel as they cling to single CDs by Foo Fighters, The Goo Goo Dolls and Smashing Pumpkins. Not a typo ... they're going to talk about the Goo Goo Dolls.00:00:00 PRE-SHOW PRATTLE - A lot of pressure00:00:25 BREAKING NEWS - Musician to release album on digital disc format00:07:37 ONE ALBUM WONDERS - and Tim’s not in a band00:10:16 ONE TO GROHL ON - Bob won’t get fooled again00:18:53 GOO ARE YOU? - Tim gets dolled up in the lyrics00:26:10 IT’S A ONE-TIME PUMPKIN, CHARLIE BROWN - and smashing kiosks00:29:08 COMMERCIAL BREAK - Tim’s new podcast “What’s that Song?”00:31:00 MOMENTARY AND SPECIFIC FANDOM - Bob owned Extreme’s “Three Sides To Every Story”00:38:49 TWILIGHT OF THE MIX TAPES - how the Buffalo roam00:44:14 21ST CENTURY POP MUSIC - has streaming changed our relationship to music? 00:50:12 UN-BRANDED COMPLETISTS - and why did it come back to Pearl Jam?00:57:24 CLOSINGS - contacts, plugs and no catch phrase01:00:17 BONUS FEATURES - Coffee and Sponge Tap alongside Bob’s feet to this Mo-Mento(s) of 90s rock, with the ORIGINAL MUSIC VIDEO FOR BIG ME BY FOO FIGHTERS.See why Tim probably would not have followed any prior fashion choice of Johnny Reznick with the first live television appearance of THE GOO GOO DOLLS PERFORMING “FALLIN’ DOWN” ON LATE NIGHT WITH CONAN O’BRIENThen see what difference another network makes as THE GOO GOO DOLLS PERFORM NAME ON THE LATE SHOW WITH DAVID LETTERMAN.Contemplate Billy Corrigan parting his hair with this LIVE PERFORMANCE OF TODAY BY THE SMASHING PUMPKINS ON THE 1993 NO ALTERNATIVE COMPILATION.Let them come over and talk you through their upcoming album with BUFFALO TOM’S 1992 APPEARANCE ON MTV’S 120 MINUTES.Get a more informed side to one of Bob’s former CD favorites with EXTREME: III SIDES TO EVERY STORY: METAL MELTDOWN BY FRED PHILLIPS for the music review site SOMETHING ELSE. Boston-based alt-rock band Letters to Cleo made its name in the 1990s and had its biggest hit in 1994 with "Here & Now." It split in 2000, reunited briefly in 2007, and it now exists-ish, coming together each November to play a series of shows. It doesn't occupy the same space in the band members' careers that it once did, but they found reasons to continue to play together. This week, Alex Rawls talks to guitarist Michael Eisenstein about the state of the band, its plans, and how they led to this year's EP, OK Christmas. He discusses why it happened now and not sooner, and how the gigs they've done since made it possible now. After that, Alex reviews new Christmas releases from the Peter Holsapple Combo, I Don't Know How but They Found Me, Drew Holcomb and the Neighbors, and Rebecca Angel. For full-length videos from these songs and more reviews, visit a recent reviews column at MySpiltMilk.com. This is the last episode of season two of 12 Songs. It will return for season three on the first Wednesday after Labor Day. If you haven't done so yet, please subscribe to the podcast at Apple Podcasts, Google Play, Stitcher and Spotify. That will help others find out about the pod and make sure that you don't miss an episode when 12 Songs returns.

This episode was originally planned to be a minicast, but when Lucette and I started diving into her songwriting and her new album, Deluxe Hotel Room, the conversation went a bit longer than I had thought. Which is fantastic, because it means you get to hear more from Lucette about how this album reflects more of her true self as a songwriter, her approach to the arrangements and lyrics, the idea that this is an Americana album lyrically and more of a synth-pop album musically, and how she worked with producer Sturgill Simpson. As she explains in the conversation, her debut album, Black Is the Color, was much more guitar-driven than Deluxe Hotel Room. It was a fine album and established her as a songwriter to watch, but she also wrote and recorded that when she was very young, and it didn't necessarily reflect the musical influences she cherished growing up. In between those two albums, she has done a lot of touring and been through hell personally. You can hear that in the isolation and disillusionment on the title track. Simpson, who was an early fan of Lucette's, just let her be herself in the studio. To hear more about her and keep up with tour dates and new releases, go to her website at www.lucettemusic.net, search for her on Facebook under lucettemusic, and on Twitter and Instagram under lucettesings. This week's featured track is “Tough Love” from Alaskalaska from their debut album The Dots, which came out in May. The first thing I loved about this track was the opening groove, laid back but with a subtle drive to it. And then the contradiction carries over into the lyrics in the opening, “Who gives a shit about anything lately? So glad to meet you?” Then the chorus comes on heavy before it drops back into the groove and that lovely skittering guitar solo around 1:20. Hard to beat a smart, catchy song with a sense of humor. Reminds me a bit of Letters To Cleo, if not in sound, in musical disposition. Check out the trippy video by animator Callum Scott-Dyson, too, which I'll post on the blog. Find out more about them on their website at Alaskalaskamusic.com or find them on Twitter under alaskalaskaband.
Dan gets super into Game Of Thrones fan theories because he just wants life to make sense, and talks to artist Tanisha Christie about her circuitous, many-chaptered life, including both times she did "Big River," the time she opened for Letters To Cleo, her call-back process for the first national tour of RENT, her political awakening in the Living Stage Theater Company, and her powerful recent work "Bathtub." On this episode, we're talking with Kay Hanley, frontwoman of '90s alternative rock act Letters to Cleo, about the band's work in films like 10 Things I Hate About You and the Craft. We also discuss Hanley's work as the singing double for Rachel Leigh Cook in Josie & the Pussycats.
Welcome to Voices and Visions, formerly Pop Culture Club. Confused? Well, there’s an introduction to help assist you. As you may or may not know, PCC is now V&V, and this is the first official episode under the new name. After my 8-minute monologue at the top, I am pleased to present another wonderful singer/songwriter by the name of Kay Hanley. If you’ve heard of the band Letters to Cleo, she is the incredibly energetic frontwoman and has always been a true blue rock star in my eyes. For movie fans, you’ll also know her as the singing voice of Josie in the hysterical satire JOSIE AND THE PUSSYCATS with Rachael Lee Cook, Parker Posey, and Alan Cumming. In addition, Kay is a songwriter for hire and has recently released a new EP with Letters to Cleo. I had the pleasure of meeting with her at the VIP show in Chicago and a couple months later, we reconnected over the phone to have a delightful conversation about her career, loss, inspiration, working in film, and what we can potentially expect from Letters to Cleo in the future. I truly hope you enjoy this episode since this is precisely the kind of show I will be offering as of 2017 on what I hope to be a weekly basis. Thank you so much to Nicole Poulos, Michael Creamer, and of course, my great guest Kay Hanley! My conversation with her begins right around the 8 minute mark.
