This is our unabridged interview with Drew Holcomb. ”The scarcity of life is what gives it value,” says singer-songwriter Drew Holcomb. “If we all lived forever, there would be no sort of rush to love and rush to justice and rush to mercy and rush to know people.” Drew's new album, Memory Bank, co-created with his wife Ellie, is full of personal stories of love, resilience, mortality, and a strong but subtle social conscience. It was his father that inspired the title track on the album saying on their frequent family road trips that “ hope you guys don't expect to inherit anything. I put all my money in the memory bank.” Drew reflects on the impact this perspective has had on him, his art, and his faith. This is our unabridged interview with Makoto Fujimura. Makoto Fujimura occupies an unusual intersection of personal realities: He is an abstract expressionist artist who discovered his Christian faith as an art student in Japan. He continually finds himself trying to bridge the divide between religion and art. “I can't really talk about my faith with my artist friends, and I can't talk about art with my Christian friends,” he says. “But for me, it's never been that way.” In this episode, he talks about how he uses traditional Japanese methods of painting — “slow art,” as he calls it — to explore grief, brokenness, and healing. “Sometimes artists have to take a chance and be vulnerable.” Drew Holcomb and Audrey Assad are two such artists, whose brilliance is in large part due to their vulnerability. Drew was once heralded by Rolling Stone as “one of Americana's most popular stars,” and yet he is quick to note that “the human heart was not built for notoriety.” He describes the complex road he took to full-time artistry, his relationship with his fans, the tragic loss of his brother, and more. Audrey found success in the Christian music industry, until her quest for authenticity and truth led her in a new direction. She shares her story, speaking honestly about traumas and doubts that brought her to where she is now. This week Dan and Reid Isbell host Drew Holcomb out in God's Country to discuss duck hunting, navigating fatherhood as a touring artist, and how his grandfather used his surgeon skills as the family taxidermist. Drew shares how his song “Family” has connected him with television analyst Ernie Johnson and how Shaq gave his son, Huck, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. The guys discuss how grandpas are the G.O.A.T. and Drew's gravorite Garth Brooks tune. Folkie Americana indie hero Drew Holcomb joins us to chat about the songwriting process and which of his songs he's not a fan of! PART ONEScott and Paul debrief the experience of recently seeing the 74-year-old Bruce Springsteen perform with the energy of a teenagerPART TWOOur in-depth conversation with Drew HolcombABOUT DREW HOLCOMBMemphis native Drew Holcomb first broke through on the national scene with the 2011 album Chasing Someday, credited to his band Drew Holcomb & the Neighbors. Subsequent studio albums, such as Good Light, Medicine, Souvenir, and Dragons hit the Top 10 on Billboard's folk and indie charts and earned Holcomb and his bandmates a loyal following. The fiercely independent group is widely regarded as a live performance powerhouse, while Holcomb's original songs have found particular resonance with music supervisors who have made them staples of film and TV show synch placements. Whether working with the band, solo, or as a duo with his wife and fellow singer/songwriter, Ellie Holcomb, Drew's literate folk-based Americana represents a craftman's approach to the songwriting process. The most recent album from Drew Holcomb & the Neighbors is called Strangers No More.
The very nature of Americana is rooted in traditional music. But it also lies at the crossroads between folk, country, and rock. So if an Americana act decides to veer into new lanes, the choices are limited and somewhat predictable. And yet it's still such a joy to hear an artist explore new sonic territory, […] The post Drew Holcomb & The Neighbors: “Suffering” appeared first on KUT & KUTX Studios -- Podcasts.

Our host, Andy Peavyhouse, recalls how, since starting this podcast, it has been a constant reminder of the power hymns have played in his journey of faith. He remembers how each hymn paints another picture of his walk with Christ and how hymns can be the cornerstone of our faith journey. One hymn that paints quite a vivid picture of Christ's triumphant victory through his finished work on the cross is Thomas Kelly's "Look Ye Saints, the Sight is Glorious." It unfolds in a symphony of poetic majesty. Each verse is a brushstroke of truth, painting the ultimate victory of Christ. We'll explore the richness of this hymn, as we dive into its authorship, history, and theology. This episode is a heartfelt tribute to hymnody's ability to capture the soul's deepest cries and loftiest praises, to strike that tender chord within us that resonates with God's truth. We'll see how this hymn echoes Scripture, inviting us all to acknowledge Jesus as the Lamb who was slain and now reigns victorious. Join us, as we honor the Lenten and Easter seasons by amplifying the joyous acclamation of Christ's triumph, encouraging listeners to reclaim the hymns that have shaped our faith, and to carry their powerful messages of truth to a lost and dying world.SHOW CREDITS AND LINKS:Andrew Peterson's “Is He Worthy?” Red Mountain Church Music Red Mountain Hymn Collective "Crown Him" Taken from This Breaks My Heart of Stone: A Collection of Hymns from Red Mountain Church Download the entire Red Mountain Music catalogue of songs in one PDF Songbook (does not include hymns from Silent Night, Demos & B-sides). Dan Zlotnick has been called “the Americana voice of Westchester County, New York” because his joyous, warm energy emanates through his songs and performances. After a three-year independent minor league baseball career, Dan began writing and performing original music. A child of classic rock radio who dug deep into folk music in college, Dan half-jokingly claims that Jimmy Page taught him guitar and John Prine taught him lyric-writing. His sound is like the multi-generational family photo hanging on the wall, and his lyrics are like the stories you share with your best friends after a hearty home cooked meal. Dan has made fans and friends in living rooms, backyards, and small venues around the country, as well as on prestigious stages like Tarrytown Music Hall, Paramount Hudson Valley Theater, Daryl's House Club, Garcia's at The Capitol Theatre, Pleasantville Music Festival, and Towne Crier Cafe. He has opened for artists including Drew Holcomb, The Felice Brothers, Marc Cohn, Patty Larkin, Jim Avett, Jessica Lynn, Arlen Roth, and more. Whether it's a spin of his latest release, an unplugged solo acoustic house concert, a full band rock show, or something in between, Dan Zlotnick's passion for honest storytelling resonates with everyone who decides to check him out. On Christmas Day, I found myself slipping into a booth at my local Waffle House and was immediately struck how it felt like slipping into a church pew. The Spirit of Jesus was present amidst the eggs, bacon, and waffles. Where are the places and when were the moments when Christmas found you this year? What spoke Christmas to you, and what did it say when it spoke? Join me on a Christmas journey acknowledging one of the greatest presents of Christmas - the gift of good memories. As I reminisce over my Granny's sweet muffins and luminarias in New Mexico, perhaps you'll recall a covey of good moments all your own. I'll drop a quarter in the Waffle House jukebox and we can listen to Drew Holcomb & the Neighbors sing "Joy to the World" (used by permission) as we share Christmas brunch. I recommend bacon and sausage because .... it's Christmas!
