“The Hypnogogue” With close to 30 albums to their credit, including classics like Heyday, Starfish, The Blurred Crusade and their fabulous new one The Hypnogogue, The Church are one of the most enduring bands of all time. Led by the British-born but Australian raised Steve Kilbey, the Sydney-based outfit continue to put out music that's mesmeric, melodic and meditative.Inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 2010 and with gold records and hit singles under their musical belts, the Church are not ones to rest on their laurels. In fact, what makes this band so alluring is that they continue to challenge themselves and their listeners. Their new album is a perfect example of this—it's a dense and textured collection of dreamlike jams, textured instrumentation, graceful hooks and churning elegance. It's the kind of album that rewards you with each repeated listen. As for Mr. Kilbey, he remains one of the most prolific artists in rock and roll, delivering not only high quality work with his band, but also adding to that oeuvre fabulous solo albums, books, and paintings. What are you planning to do with your children during the looming school holidays? Dr Elizabeth Kilbey, Child Psychologist and Expert on Channel 4's 'The Secret Life of 4, 5 and 6 year olds', reveals that 90% of parents are not necessarily looking forward to the Easter holidays. Dr Kilbey urges parents to see the benefits of children playing outside to encourage activity, let off steam and build character. Activities do not have to be expensive. As a child of a different generation, I was always playing outside - no 24 hour TV, no social media, and no regrets! Research was carried out by Fruit Shoot who have created an activity booklet. “Swinging On The Moon” Steve Kilbey can swing from anywhere he wants in the universe; the moon, the stars, whichever planet he chooses. And yes, of course, he can also swing from the milky way. Because the fact of the matter is that Steve Kilbey is a musician whose talents are not only downright otherworldly, they're positively celestial. A poet, a painter, a singer, a writer, a partner and a dad, Kilbey is not only one of the most fascinating musicians to ever walk around on this planet, he's also one of the most productive. In addition to the 25 albums he's recorded with the Church, he's got almost twenty solo albums under his belt, along with numerous side projects with members of Game Theory, The Go-Betweens, All India Radio and Remy Zero. Kilbey's new double album The Hall of Counterfeits is a straight up stunner that's as raw as it is ravishing. In this chat he talks to Alex about the pressures of recording for a major label, why he's writing songs on acoustic guitar now and how heroin addiction ended up being a chapter in his life rather than a book. He also talks about his friendship with Grant McLennan, his penchant for being competitive and his favorite album by The Triffids…. https://waterfrontrecords.mywaterfrontstore.com/Product/94653/1?ffm=FFM_21f04e523dca1e9055cf4b6e20f53a16 https://ffm.to/thehallofcounterfeits www.thetimebeing.com www.thechurchband.net www.bombshellradio.com www.alexgreenonline.com Find Alex on Twitter: @emberseditor And Instragram: @emberspodcast EMAIL: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com
Steve Kilbey talks about his new album, The Hall of Counterfeits, composed and recorded with his band The Winged Heels. The Hall of Counterfeits, a double-album, is a collection of Kilbey's interests, thoughts, observations and ponderances over the past thirty years including ancient history, mythology, philosophy and The Beatles. The music is quite eclectic, ranging from guitar heavy tracks to more experimental cuts with varied effects and ethnic instruments from all over the globe to Church-esque sounds laden with Steve's 80s and 90s pop sensibilities.
This is a fun one! Melissa takes us to church with The Church. Maymi has collaborated with Liverpool's The Wild Swans, fronted by Paul Simpsonand has worked with Steve Kilbey of The Church. Kilbey and Maymi recorded the album The Wilderness Years by David Neil, released in July 2011. The David Neil of the title is a fictional rock star "from days past" described in press material as the project's original songwriter. This pseudonym was created, Maymi has explained, as a means for the duo to achieve "creative liberation by not exactly having to be 'ourselves'".

On today’s podcast episode I’ll be speaking to Steve Kilbey, best known as the vocalist, bassist, and primary songwriter for veteran Australian alternative psych group The Church. With The Church, Kilbey has generated a whopping 25 studio albums since their formation, beginning with 1981’s Of Skins and Heart. The band are most notable in pop culture for their hit single Under The Milky Way off their 1988 album Starfish, but as diehard fans will tell you, that’s just a drop in the ocean to their immersive, impressive and expansive body of work, including their masterful 2017 album Man, Woman, Life, Death, Infinity. But Kilbey has also had a lengthy solo career, releasing 14 eclectic and stirring albums., including Earthling, The Idyllist and Sydney Rococo. And now he’s back with Eleven Women, one of his strongest solo efforts to date. In today’s interview Kilbey discusses the origins and creative process behind the new album, the challenges of being a musician during the Coronavirus pandemic, future solo work, his upcoming album with The Church, and a stirring account of a childhood experience with extraterrestrials. So check out the interview and stick around afterwards when I’ll be playing Woman #9, a song off the new album. Steve Kilbey from Australian band the Church talks music, drugs and Trump with Greg Appel and Eddy Jokovich. An unrepentant rock star.
Songwriters don’t get much more prolific than Steve Kilbey, frontman for the Church. Besides decades of anchoring mood- and mindscapes for the Church, Kilbey’s carved out a busy, creatively fertile solo career for himself. His latest release, “Eleven Women,” recorded during the pandemic, is raw and wonderful. Kilbey joins me from another continent this evening to chat on Car Con Carne. Young Southpaw talks to The Church’s Steve Kilbey about his new solo album 11 Women, the songwriting genius of Kilbey, Bolan, Dylan, Lou Reed, Lennon, McCartney, and the magic & mystery of songs themselves https://www.instagram.com/stvklby/http://thetimebeing.com/https://twitter.com/stevekilbey Steve Kilbey: That’s what I want to do with songs, truly break through to that sort of hypnogogic state, where all the music and the words, everything, it’s just a flow of thoughts, that aren’t completely random. If you go too random, then you get meaninglessness. You don’t want that. You don’t want people to go ‘there’s no meaning in this’. You’ve gotta have this, it’s a very subtle thing and only the really great songwriters understand that. These subtle threads that keep you interested in a song, even though it seems on the surface, superficially it seems like there’s no thread. There is some kind of internal thread that the listener will grasp, and it will make you feel good that you’re sort of in on it. People write to me and go ‘your songs make me feel like I’m in on something’. And that’s cause you’re sort of grokking it, ya know? Young Southpaw: Yeah. ‘Sheba Chiba’ reminded me of like a Bolan rhyme as well. SK: Oh yeah, of course. Marc Bolan and David Bowie and Bob Dylan and The Beatles are never far from any of my songs. I played 11 Women to a girl who came round the other day and she said ‘wow, it’s really Marc Bolan’ and I go ‘yeah, of course it is’. But hopefully the good part of Marc Bolan and not the bad part. In my opinion, Bolan went really badly off the rails, and is a spectacular example of what not to do. He was really writing these wonderfully ambiguous songs and then he became really famous and it all went to his head and he started just making up nonsense. Instead of having this ambiguous dreamlike hypnogogic stuff, he was just making up nursery rhymes and nonsense. The last album I ever bought of his, there was a line ‘Uncle Bimbo drank up the sea of Galilee, and like a fool he promised it all to me’. And when I heard that line I went, ‘you’ve lost it, Marc. I don’t wanna hear that anymore.’ And there was David Bowie putting out Aladdin Sane, and I’m like ‘well, it really hurts me to do this, but David Bowie’s now my main man. Sorry, Marc.’ And I felt like Bolan had lost it. Later on, I read he was heavily into cocaine and heavily into drinking a lot of red wine and snorting a lot of coke, and he lost his mojo. Where the cocaine worked for Bowie. But for Bolan it didn’t, it just sort of made him egotistical, and he thought ‘oh, I can just do anything’. And you can never! You can’t! No one - not John Lennon, not Bolan, not me, no one - can just do anything.
