The stock market seems complicated until you hear Glen Starr explain it. This former chemical engineer turned financial advisor breaks down investing into simple terms that even a 5th grader could understand. In this candid conversation with executive coach Mike O'Neill, Glen shares why most people focus on the wrong things when investing. His most controversial take? Stock prices only matter twice - when you buy and when you sell. Everything else is noise.Glen's practical wisdom comes from 32 years of helping clients build wealth, sparked by an unexpected career change during an oil industry downturn. His engineering background gives him a unique perspective on financial planning, focusing on facts rather than emotions.Key insights from the episode:Why real estate isn't as liquid as most people thinkThe 4 main categories where you can invest your moneyHow dividends can make a "boring" stock incredibly valuableWhy media hysteria about economic data usually doesn't matterThe importance of taking the long view - beyond your own lifetimeMike guides the conversation masterfully, drawing out Glen's most valuable insights while keeping the discussion grounded in practical advice anyone can use. Their exchange about trust and perspective, using the analogy of a haircut, perfectly captures why having an outside viewpoint is crucial for both investing and leadership.Whether you're a seasoned investor or just starting out, this episode strips away the complexity of financial planning and focuses on what really matters - owning successful businesses for the long term.Find all the show notes and links here:  https://www.unstuck.show/196

I'm stoked to share my conversation with Calvin Froedge. Calvin has one of the most unique investing backgrounds I've encountered in four years of the podcast. He didn't graduate high school. Instead, he spent his late teen years working for his dad's machinery business. He explored other business ventures in his early twenties before moving to Panama. Today, Calvin spends his time researching new investments and running his Shipping Data company, Marhelm. I thoroughly enjoyed this conversation. Calvin is a breath of fresh air. He brings a common sense approach to real asset investing. There's no fancy math or excel work. Calvin can explain all his investments on the back of a napkin. You will enjoy his insights. We spend the hour discussing Petrobras $PBR, Ecopetrol $EC, and other ideas on Calvin's radar. If you enjoyed this podcast, check out Calvin on Twitter @CalvinFroedge. Also, Value Hive listeners get 20% off Calvin's Shipping Data service Marhelm. Just enter the code "Value" at checkout. Finally, thanks to the following sponsors for making the podcast a reality! A listener writes into the show -- what should she do with her investments in this market? Each week she is seeing the value of her portfolio go down, and she is losing as much value as what she puts in each month. Ouch! Jesse reminds us not to panic, and to go back to your written investment plan (you have one of those, right?).   Why are you investing in the first place? What is your time horizon? Do you think the economy will grow in the (long-term) future? If yes -- and this has been historically true over a long time horizon -- then a broad market index will also grow over the long run, and sticking to your investment plan is the thing to do.   Jesse has another recommendation: look at the number of shares you own, not the value of those shares on paper. If your number of shares is going up, then your portfolio is still growing by an important metric!   Investing books mentioned in the show: The Little Book of Common Sense Investing by Jack Bogle A Random Walk Down Wall Street by Burton Malkiel The Bogleheads Guide to Investing The Four Pillars of Investing by Bernstein   Send Jesse an email at: askjesse@ynab.com   Sign up for a free 34-day trial of YNAB at www.youneedabudget.com
