He has also created original chamber music commissioned by Marissa Benedict for University of Minnesota, Jim Self for University of Southern California, also by the Interlochen Center for the Arts, and Stomvi-USA.  Smith's training as a music performance major includes a Master of Fine Arts degree from California Institute of the Arts where he studied with Edward Carroll and John Fumo; and a Bachelor of Music degree from the Eastman School of Music with professor James Thompson. He is also a graduate of the Interlochen Arts Academy with Stanley Friedman.

Sam Harris is the vocalist for American alternative rock  band X Ambassadors. The band, founded in Ithaca, New York, gained widespread attention with their debut album 'VHS' (2015) behind hit songs like 'Renegades' and 'Unsteady'. X Ambassadors released their follow-up album 'Orion' in 2019 and the concept album 'The Beautiful Liar' in 2021. What's the road to becoming a rockstar? For Casey Harris, who is legally blind, it all started by tuning pianos. Now the 34-year old performs around the world as the keyboardist for the alt-rock band X Ambassadors. In this episode, Casey tells us about growing up in Ithaca, how his brother Sam and him would always fight as kids and how they nonetheless started making music together; also, what every newcomer band should consider when they want to be taken seriously. On September 24th 2021, X Ambassadors will release their new album "Beautiful Liar". The interview was conducted in the summer of 2019 at Casey's house in Ithaca, NY.
