David Frankham Remembers the Hollywood of Yesterday David Frankham played Larry Marvick in the "Star Trek" season three episode, "Is There In Truth No Beauty?" but his extensive resume traces all the way back to the 1940s. Mr. Frankham, who is the oldest guest to appear on this podcast at 97 years young, has seen it all and has tons of amazing tales from a bygone era of Hollywood.  David explains how he found his way into acting serving in the British Army during WW II, working for the BBC, his first television gig in front of 25 million people thanks to Rosemary Clooney, how Elizabeth Taylor and Sir Alec Guinness started his acting career in Hollywood, tales of kindness from Vincent Price, a wealth of Angela Lansbury stories, voicing Sgt. Tibbs in "101 Dalmations" and his encounters with the man behind The Mouse, Walt Disney, working on "King Rat," and great stories with Steve McQueen, George Cukor, Capucine, and even being attacked by Judy Gardland with a shoe!  And, of course, loads of memories from Star Trek, including working with Diana Muldair, William Shatner, DeForest Kelley, Leonard Nimoy, James Doohan, and the behind-the-scenes drama that shut down production!  Check out his book "Which One Was David?" on Amazon - https://amzn.to/3rAmAWH NOTE: This interview was conducted before the SAG-AFTRA Strike of 2023. We're thrilled to welcome back director Ralph Senensky for our deep dive of his sixth and final "Star Trek" episode, the sublime third season classic "Is There In Truth No Beauty?" When the Enterprise is assigned to transport a Federation ambassador back to his homeworld, the mission turns out to be both dangerous and delicate. It's dangerous because the Medusan ambassador's formless appearance must be contained, or the sight of him will drive anyone insane. And it's delicate because the ambassador's devoted aid, Dr. Miranda Jones, has a complex relationship with their accompanying technical specialist, Laurence Marvick, who is smitten with her. When Marvick's jealousy takes a turn for the worst, the Enterprise is sent spiraling out of control into the intergalactic void, where only thing that can save the ship is a fragile mind link between the Medusan ambassador and Mr. Spock. After producing two back-to-back episodes that were among the worst of the series, "Star Trek" rebounded in a big way with "Is There In Truth No Beauty?" In addition to featuring a deeply moving story, the episode if marked by inspired direction from Ralph Senensky, an epic score composed by George Duning and, above all else, magnificent performances from both Leonard Nimoy and guest star Diana Muldaur. All Our Yesterdays was the twenty third episode of Star Trek's third season to air, with a civilisation using time travel technology to escape an impending apocalypse. In this episode Gerry and Iain discuss looking before you leap. After arriving at a planet due to face the supernova of its star, Kirk, Spock and McCoy find one person alive on the surface, a librarian named Atoz (Ian Wolfe) who is guardian of an unusual time travel device. Trapped separately in the past, Spock and McCoy meet Zarabeth (Mariette Hartley) and struggle with Spock's genetic regression, while Kirk enlists the help of a fellow time traveller (Kermit Murdock) to return to the library before the star explodes. All Our Yesterdays was directed by Marvin Chomsky, the last of his three episodes. The script was written by Jean Lisette Aroeste, who also penned Is There In Truth No Beauty? In this episode Gerry and Iain considered whether time is a flat circle. The discussion continues in the comments below and please keep in touch with us on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram where we're @trekpodcast. You can listen to the show here on the website, on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, Pocket Casts, TuneIn, Stitcher, Google or wherever you find your podcasts. All Our Yesterdays was released in 1969. It is 50 minutes long and originally aired on the NBC network. It can be viewed on Paramount+ in the United states, Netflix in the UK and is available on DVD and Blu Ray in other countries, including a comprehensive remastered set of all three seasons released by Paramount Home Entertainment.

Considering how late it is in the series, I don't think they're ever going to learn. It's still free access to all guests and no locked doors anywhere, and what does it get us? First up is the shrillest takeover of the "Enterprise" yet in "And the Children Shall Lead," followed by YET ANOTHER jaunt beyond the galactic barrier in "Is There in Truth No Beauty?" The Misconception of Perception. As the old saying goes, Beauty is in the Eye of the Beholder. The Original Series episode “Is There In Truth No Beauty?” from Season Three, is an incredibly deep and philosophical exploration into the more complex meanings behind the nature of one’s self. Does the superficial outweigh the essential? How can the truth survive amongst the shifting nature of human perception? As the Chief and AtoZ were away on respective missions, I beamed aboard my sisters from Educating Geeks, Alice and Megan, to help me unpack these philosophies. At the end of this episode Spock and Miranda shared a wonderful exchange, “The glory of creation is in its infinite diversity. And the way our differences combine to create meaning and beauty." Did they tell a story that lead to the message or does the path not match with the destination? Does this episode fall into the Season Three stigma or did it set itself apart with this unique study of the human condition?
