24th episode of the second season of ''Star Trek: Voyager''
POPULARITY
Tuvix (Star Trek: Voyager, S2 E24) was recommended by Alex Russet , who said: I'm honestly shocked that this hasn't shown up in the podcast yet. It's the perfect fit for what you're doing. This Episode is fascinating to me. At It's very core is a trolly problem. Save the lives of two for the cost of one, or preserve the one at the cost of two. Both sides have valid points, but equally are both flawed responses to a situation with no truly correct response. But respond Janeway must. And while it was fairly obvious which option would be chosen, (Tim Russ and Ethan Phillips had bills to pay), it still hit hard. Not every option is black and white. How much is a life worth? Do the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few? I think the fandom as a whole settled on Team Tuvix, myself included, but I think this episode is captivating from a series famous for it's moralizing.Tuvix first aired on May 6, 1996, written by story by Andrew Shepard Price and Mark Gaberman, teleplay by Kenneth Biller, and directed by Cliff BoleA transporter accident merges Tuvok and Neelix into a new person. The Joy of Trek is hosted by Khaki & Kay, with editing & production by Chief Engineer Greg and music by Fox Amoore (Bandcamp | Bluesky)Send us your recommendations, or support us on Patreon.Find us at joyoftrek.com · Twitter · Facebook
It is a truth universally acknowledged, that Trekkies in possession of a podcast, must eventually discuss “Tuvix.” We attempt to unpack the many different readings and interpretations of this episode, and then Kennedy (Team Janeway) and Grace (Team Tuvix) go head-to-head. The iconic Star Trek: Voyager episode "Tuvix" continues to spark ethical debates nearly 30 years after its original airing. In this episode of Superhero Ethics, hosts Matthew and Riki dive deep into one of Star Trek's most morally complex stories, examining Captain Janeway's controversial decision to effectively end one life to restore two others. The hosts explore how the episode's unique twist on the classic trolley problem, where instead of choosing between strangers, the decision involves deeply personal relationships and crew dynamics. They discuss how Janeway's emotional connection to Tuvok and her responsibility as captain influenced her judgment. What role do emotions play in ethical decision-making? The hosts examine how the episode challenges the common practice of trying to divorce emotions from moral choices, particularly through the powerful performances of the cast and the way Tuvix's plea for his life forces the crew to confront their complicity through their silence.Other key topics discussed:The brilliant performance by Tom Wright as Tuvix and how he created a distinct character while incorporating elements of both Tuvok and NeelixHow modern TV storytelling might have handled this plot differentlyThe significance of the doctor's refusal to participate and Janeway's choice to perform the procedure herselfThe show's failure to address the emotional aftermath in subsequent episodesComparisons to other ethical dilemmas in Star Trek and science fictionThe hosts conclude that while they may disagree on whether Janeway made the right choice, the episode's enduring legacy lies in its ability to present a moral dilemma with no clear right answer – one that continues to challenge viewers and spark discussions decades after its original airing. **************************************************************************This episode is a production of Superhero Ethics, a The Ethical Panda Podcast and part of the TruStory FM Entertainment Podcast Network. JAKOTAY OR CHANEWAY? Did we ever settle on the label for a Janeway-Chakotay relationship? Oh well, it hardly matters, since those two crazy kids are always on the fence about making a move. It all comes to a head in this time travel adventure from season 7 where a Janeway from just before the pilot finds herself becoming more and more attracted to a season 7 Chakotay even as he fills her in on the horrible fate that awaits her during her first command. Does this episode serve as a love letter to Star Trek: Voyager or something better? Will Bryan & Kristen TREK, MARRY, or KILL IT? The grades begin at (22:15).Don't forget! We're giving away a Blu ray box set of Star Trek: Discovery - The Complete Series. To enter, all you have to do is submit a poem about Discovery to our email: trekmarrykpod at gmail. We're accepting poems until 11:59pm PST on December 1, 2024. If we like your poem the best, we will send you the box set as a Thank You!

When Adira brings a bug aboard the Disco after hanging out with their ex, Captain Burnham and Commander Rayner narrowly avoid being Tuvix-ed when they attempt to blurp out of her ready room. But when a groggy future version of Zora lays out the stakes for the rest of the season, they'll have to Quantum Leap their way through some of Star Trek: Discovery's greatest hits in order to rectify the timeline. What would happen if Stamets met Wesley Crusher? Do hologram computers have privacy screens? Is Book going for the record? In which the 3-Ds make their brains hurt pondering some of the unponderable ethical issues in popular science fiction. Star Trek, of course, did this almost weekly -- especially on Voyager with such memorable examples as the Tuvix conundrum, or the right to suicide for Quinn. (Trigger Warning: Quinn's example leads to an extended discussion on the secular and religious quandary on taking one's own life.) And in our age of emerging AI, Next Gen gives us the debate on whether Data (or any machine) can have the same rights as any human. Terminator, The Matrix, Star Wars: ethical issues abound, and the 3-Ds stumble through them all. Or at least all they could think of in 45 minutes! ------------- For more of our shenanigans, be sure to follow us on Twitter! BLEEP GOT FREAKY aboard the USS Voyager, but BLEEP gets even freakier aboard the USS Cerritos after it's assigned to tow the famous ship to its final home as a museum piece. In this special bonus episode, Twitter/X's FanSince09 returns to discuss how Lower Decks deals with Star Trek's version of the trolley problem. He also uses this opportunity to soft launch a podcast he's been thinking about for a while -- which idea winds up being more grotesque? FanSince09's podcast idea or the blob of people created by all of the Tuvixing going on aboard the Cerritos? You be the judge.
DEEP LORE TREKKIES aren't the only ones who know about the episode where Captain Janeway straight up murdered a dude. Indeed, the one where a transporter accident merges Tuvok and Neelix has been the subject of philosophical and legal papers and years of social media debate -- but has it all added up to this one being worthy of the Star Trek canon? Is it marriage material? Joining Bryan and Kristen to help them decide this week is Twitter/X's FanSince09, who has never let this one fade from memory. It's a whole new theme month! Tread Perilously's annual Star Trek month begins with a return to Star Trek: Voyager for the episode called "Tuvix." When a transporter accident merges Tuvok and Neelix into a single being, the crew attempt to untangle the mystery and their lost comrades. The resulting creature, dubbed "Tuvix," may be the best of both worlds. His cooking is better, his insights more profound, and his ability to proceed on a hunch makes him a better tactical officer than the logic-bound Tuvok. But will the crew really accept Tuvix? Also, when the Doctor comes up with a method to restore his component parts, will Tuvix submit to the procedure or equate it with murder? Hunter Black writer Justin Peniston joins Erik and Justin R for a lively discussion of this hotly debated Voyager's episode. The latter learns the origin of "Captain Janeway is a murderer." The script's structure is taken to task. A Bluesky thread about how other captains would deal with the Tuvix question provides fodder for opinions of Jean-Luc Picard, Kira Nerys, and Michael Burnham. Justin P points to Voyager's inability to work with its initial premise. All three discuss the problems with Neelix, too. Tuvix actor Tom Wright proves to be the MVP, naturally enough, and Justin R declares the Strange New Worlds cast the sexiest of all the Star Trek shows.

Writing "Star Trek" with Lisa Klink, Part 2 Lisa Klink wrote 15 episodes of Star Trek shows on DS9 and VOY and was the executive story editor for "Star Trek: Voyager," along with some other Trek projects. Across the entirety of this two-part interview, Lisa will break down all of her Star Trek scripts and demystify how to write for a television show. This week, we are breaking down the second half of Lisa's VOY credits, including "Favorite Son" and how that script went through significant changes over time, along with what she wished the crew could have done with Harry Kim's character, "Displaced," "Revulsion," "Scientific Method," "Message in a Bottle," the controversial "Retrospect," and "Omega Directive." We learn how Lisa deals with writer's block, writing season-long arcs versus episodic television, the plans for B'Elanna and Tom's relationship, Chakotay and Seven's romance, the evolution of the Borg, what didn't make it to air, and a few other important episodes she contributed to, including "Tuvix," "Threshold," and "The Year of Hell." Lisa also fills us in on some other Trek projects, like writing the "Star Trek Voyager: Retribution" video game and the immersive Star Trek Borg Invasion that was part of the Star Trek Experience in Las Vegas. Plus, writing for Gene Roddenberry's "Earth: Final Conflict" and producing "Martial Law," writing action scenes and the plans for the seasons that never happened, being a multiple-day winning contestant on "Jeopardy," stories about Majel Barrett, thoughts on the new Star Trek shows, and the criticism of their writing from a certain segment of the fandom. When Voyager goes to goo and the honeymoon is off, a scientific mystery turns into an existential crisis for the remaining members of the crew. But after a too-late decision by Captain Janeway leads to a lot of Lantreeing around, the bleakest tragedy of all is a vague computer entry. Does the comm badge serve additional functions in the 24th century? What's ok to steal from your wife? Could the back of Tuvix's head be even more horrifying? It's the episode that's not great to look at during. It's Max Fun Drive! Support the production of The Greatest Generation.Friends of DeSoto for Democracy.Friends of DeSoto for Justice.
