Marilyn Monroe is one of the most recognisable women who has ever lived, but the version the world fell in love with was, in many ways, built in a studio. Today, we trace how Marilyn Monroe emerged from Norma Jean's unstable and abusive childhood to become the Hollywood icon everyone thinks they know. We follow her early modelling career, her studio-made voice, and the blonde bombshell image she spent years trying to outrun. But there is a darker side to this story too: the marriages, the power struggles, and the myths that shaped her final years. Marilyn Monroe's story is what happens when public fantasy grows far bigger than the woman forced to carry it. Topics Include norma jean's childhood, foster homes, and abuse how marilyn monroe was made by hollywood the breathy voice, the bombshell image, and studio control joe dimaggio, arthur miller, and public fascination jfk, conspiracy theories, and the final unraveling Resources and Further Reading Marilyn Monroe - Encyclopaedia Britannica Marilyn Monroe - FBI Vault Marilyn's Method - The Criterion Collection Host & Show Info Hosts: Kyle Risi & Adam Cox Intro Music:Alice in dark Wonderland Community & Calls to Action Review & follow on: Spotify & Apple Podcasts Instagram: @theCompendiumPodcast Website: TheCompendiumPodcast.com Support us: Sign up to Patreon We're Hiring: Find the perfect job at the circus Share this episode with a friend! The Zodiac Killer did not just murder people; he turned the case into a public game of fear, symbols, letters and unsolved ciphers. This episode follows the Zodiac Killer from the first lovers' lane attacks in Northern California to the murder of taxi driver Paul Stine, tracing how a string of true crime cases became one of America's most enduring unsolved mysteries. We unpack the Zodiac Killer murders, the taunting newspaper letters, the coded messages, the Z340 cipher, surviving witnesses, and the strange public performance that made the case feel bigger than the crimes themselves. We also look at the suspects and theories that have kept the case alive, including Arthur Leigh Allen, Lake Berryessa, Lake Herman Road, Blue Rock Springs, and the haunting question of why the Zodiac Killer was never caught. This is dark history, historical true crime, real life mysteries and true crime stories at their most unnerving: a serial killer podcast deep dive into what really happened, what remains unknown, and why the hunt still fascinates listeners decades later. The Compendium Podcast: An Assembly of Fascinating and Intriguing Things
A man checks into the President Hotel under a false name — and Room 1046 becomes a locked-door nightmare. The death of the man known as Roland T. Owen remains one of the strangest true crime stories of 1930s Kansas City. Behind the name was a deeper mystery: Artemis Ogletree, a false identity, a hotel room filled with unanswered questions, and a cast of names that still feel like pieces from a puzzle no one has ever fully solved. This historical true crime episode follows the eerie Room 1046 case through the President Hotel, the Kansas City murder investigation, the mystery letters, and the people connected to the story, including Eugene K. Scott, Mary Soptic, Don Kelso and the elusive “Louise”. Was Room 1046 the scene of a planned hotel murder, a meeting gone wrong, or something even stranger? For listeners drawn to unsolved mysteries, real life mysteries, cold case podcast stories and dark history, this is a chilling look at how one hotel room became a lasting legend. Room 1046 is not just a murder case. It is a strange history of aliases, silence, fear and unanswered questions that still refuses to stay buried. Topics Include The President Hotel in Kansas City in January 1935 Roland T. Big episode today! There were just too many interesting details out there about George Russell to cut out. Such a strange, unique, and ultimately terrible human being who is alive and in prison right now for some brutal murderers he committed in the summer of 1990 in Bellevue, Washington. Most people think sugar is just a health issue—but the truth goes much deeper. In this episode, we uncover the dark history behind sugar no one talks about—a story that goes beyond cravings and calories and into slavery, sugar plantations, and systems like convict leasing that continued forced labor long after emancipation.Registered nurse Shun Foreman shares how her journey started with understanding sugar's impact on the body—diabetes, metabolic disease, and chronic illness—and led her to a much bigger realization: the story of sugar has been largely left out of what we're taught. This conversation connects the dots between: the historical roots of sugar production the exploitation tied to sugar plantations the long-term impact on communities and health and why sugar continues to affect behavior and well-being today We also explore why awareness alone isn't enough to break free from sugar—and how understanding your deeper “why” can change the way you approach it for good.If you've ever struggled to cut sugar, felt stuck in cycles with food, or sensed there's more to the story than “just eat less,” this episode will give you a perspective you likely haven't heard before.Enjoyed this episode? **Discussion begins at 3:50**In the late 1970s, the peaceful, small town community of Circleville, OH, was shaken when individuals began receiving strange letters. They all came in the mail with absent or fake return addresses, and were postmarked from Columbus, OH, 25 miles north of Circleville. The letters were handwritten in strange block letters and contained details about the recipients. Over 1000 letters were sent, accusing neighbors of affairs, exposing private lives, and threatening violence if confessions weren't made. And whoever was behind them seemed to know everything including intimate details no outsider should have known. Then, things escalated. One victim died under suspicious circumstances while confronting the writer. Another was set up with a booby trap that was supposed to kill her on contact. What started as anonymous harassment was now something far darker and far more deadly. But here's where the mystery deepens. A suspect was caught. A trial was held. A man was sent to prison. Case closed… right? Not even close. Because even after the conviction, the letters didn't stop. So who was really behind the Circleville letters? Today we're talking about a wild story involving secrets, paranoia, and the terrifying idea that someone out there might know you better than you know yourself.Send us Fan MailSupport the showTheme song by INDA

Nat meets up with Theresa the landlady of one of Biggleswade's most mysterious pubs. There's very little historical information about the Whistle and Flute, which changed its name from the Elephant and Castle in the 1990s. Theresa and her staff have all experienced strange phenomena in the pub, and Nat hopes to shed some light on why that might be. Nat also speaks with Lloyd Lugsden of the “Dead Pubs of Bedfordshire” project to find out if he has come across any themes when it comes to haunted pubs across the county. This leads Nat to uncover a tragic story about drunken driving of a horse and trap. Finally, Nat speaks with Kevin O'Shea from Supernatural Japan podcast about his experiences in haunted pubs in Canada and Japan. Japan's drinking culture is traditionally very different to Europe and North America's and it seems their rich ghost lore makes for some interesting experiences in their traditional inns (Ryoken.) Long before the pill became a symbol of choice and freedom, birth control was built on secrets, lies, and experiments done on bodies that never truly got to say “yes.” From dangerous early trials on poor and marginalized women to forced sterilisation laws and eugenics‑driven policies, the fight to control pregnancy has often gone hand in hand with attempts to control entire groups of people. Behind every neat little packet of pills and every “liberating” slogan sits a much darker truth: who got safe options, who got harmed in the name of progress, and who still pays the price for that history today.

In the late nineteenth century the United States pushed west and its expansion unleashed devastating violence against Native Americans. Forced from their lands and herded onto reservations Native communities faced a relentless campaign of dispossession and massacre. Thousands of miles away in Ireland deep poverty drove many to enlist in the US Army and they became participants in these same frontier wars. This contradiction is stark. People who had been pushed from their own homes by hardship helped push Native Americans from theirs and in some cases took part in atrocities. In this episode Damian Shiels joins me to talk about his remarkable new project mapping US military pensions claimed in Ireland between 1845 and 1905. These files are a window into working class Irish life and also reveal how closely Irish history is tied to some of the darkest chapters of American expansion. Our conversation focuses on the Indian Wars and the uncomfortable questions they raise. It is a complex story that challenges assumptions and connects global history to local Irish streets and villages in surprising ways.Check out the map https://storymaps.arcgis.com/stories/4e3d403b289342ad92a9259de2597c24Support the show https://patreon.com/irishpodcastSound by Kate Dunlea Hosted on Acast. This is a Grave Talks CLASSIC EPISODE! PART TWOIn the 1800s, The Park Hotel in Yorkshire stood as a symbol of elegance — a seaside retreat for mill workers seeking rest and entertainment, and a favored stop for performers traveling through the region. But behind its charm and glamour, a darker story was quietly unfolding.According to investigator Andy Moore, The Park Hotel held secrets far removed from its public image. Whispered rumors suggest that hidden beneath the polished façade were rituals, symbols, and practices that had nothing to do with hospitality — and everything to do with invoking darker forces. This is a Grave Talks CLASSIC EPISODE!In the 1800s, The Park Hotel in Yorkshire stood as a symbol of elegance — a seaside retreat for mill workers seeking rest and entertainment, and a favored stop for performers traveling through the region. 1937 - Mexico, Missouri On the eve of Thanksgiving in 1937, 46-year-old Margaret Mortimer, who went by Peggy, was just steps from her front door when she was attacked and killed by an unknown assailant. Investigators found few clues and no obvious suspects, despite a city-wide manhunt. And as early leads faded, local police turned to Ira Cooper, the St. Louis Police Department's first Black lieutenant, hoping his sterling reputation could bring answers to a case already slipping away. The murder shocked the industrial town of Mexico, Missouri. Peggy was well known and widely liked, with no clear enemies. But on that cold November night, someone was waiting—and the question remains: who? Hi, friends! Happy Wednesday! Welcome to the fourth... and maybe final... Joanie Awards. Tear. But don't be sad that it might be over... be happy because it all happened. After a season jam packed with horny nuns, rogue presidents, cursed statues, disastrous love lives (ancient AND modern), Britney impressions and some evil, shedding mittens… we're closing things out with a bang. In this special Dark History finale... me, Joan, and Paul roll out the red carpet to honor the best, the messiest, and the most unhinged moments of Season Four. I'm talking iconic costumes, surprise musical numbers, historic divas, cursed inventions, Vegas chaos, medical nightmares, and impressions that are so bad... they're good. Plus, I pull back the curtain with some never-before-seen clips, behind-the-scenes moments, and fan comments that sent me into full spirals. It's chaotic, it's heartfelt, it's ridiculous… it's The Joanies, babe. Will this be the last one ever? I honestly don't know. But if it is... we're going out in true Dark History fashion: curious, laughing, learning, oversharing, and maybe questioning our life choices just a little bit. Seriously, thank you so much for tuning in all season. Without you, I would not be here. xo Bailey ________ FOLLOW ME AROUND Tik Tok: https://bit.ly/3e3jL9v Instagram: http://bit.ly/2nbO4PR Facebook: http://bit.ly/2mdZtK6 Twitter: http://bit.ly/2yT4BLV Pinterest: http://bit.ly/2mVpXnY Youtube: http://bit.ly/1HGw3Og Goodreads: http://bit.ly/3IVnO7N Snapchat: https://bit.ly/3cC0V9d Discord: https://discord.gg/BaileySarian RECOMMEND A STORY HERE: cases4bailey@gmail.com Business Related Emails: bailey@underscoretalent.com Business Related Mail: Bailey Sarian 4400 W.
