Today in 1931, President Herbert Hoover signed a bill that made “The Star-Spangled Banner” the national anthem of the United States, more than a century after it was written. Another fun fact about the anthem: there's an official Spanish-language version. Plus: today in 1920, the birthday of James Doohan. His Star Trek character, Mr. Scott, has a plaque in the town where he's supposed to be born in 2222. If we were going to do an episode on Star Trek: The Motion Picture, we had to find the two biggest Star Trek nerds that we know: Ben Gillcrist and Jason MacLeod. Join the foursome as the hosts marvel at the aforementioned guests' encylopedic knowledge of the source material in a discussion of this huge movie. They also discuss Bones being a hippie, the space vagina, the 6-minute Enterprise introduction, a lot of staring at TV screens and much more. Next week: Batman gets squeezed. It's the last cinematic voyage of the original Enterprise crew, but the first (and only) for the new Federation President, played by The 70s Show's Kurtwood Smith. Kurtwood joins William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelley, James Doohan, Walter Koenig, Nichelle Nichols, George Takei, as well as Star Trek newcomers Kim Cattrall, Christopher Plummer, David Warner, and... Christian Slater? What kind photos did Kim Cattrall get in trouble for taking on the set after hours? How much Shakespheare in space is too much? If the Klingons in this cold war-inspired story are supposed to be Russians, and the Federation supposed to be Americans, does that mean Kurtwood Smith's alien president is supposed to be... Episode: 2150 Scotty on Starship Enterprise: an image of an engineer. Today, we beam up with guest scientist Andrew Boyd.
Send us a Text Message. On this episode of Fabulous Film and Friends we are looking back at two middling, lackluster sci-fi adventures from 1994 that have mysteriously stood the test of time: Stargate, directed by Roland Emmerich and starring Kurt Russell, James Spader, John Diehl, Jaye Davidson, Viveca Lindfors, Erick Avari, Alexis Cruz, Mili Avital, Leon Rippey, French Stewart, and Djimon Hounsou, which was released in October of ‘94 then Star Trek: Generations which was released a month later, was directed by David Carson and starred Patrick Stewart, Jonathan Frakes, Brent Spiner, Levar Burton, Michael Dorn, Marina Sirtis, Gates McFaddon, Malcolm McDowell, Walter Koenig, James Doohan and William Shatner. I'm Gino Caputi your host, and back for more, especially if Star Trek is to be discussed I have series regular and IT tech Burton Brown, and representing the fresh eyes of the younger, non-cynical generation, author hypnotherapist Joe Field. The synopses: In Stargate, a crack squad of US Special Forces led by Colonel Jack O'Neill with an assist from archeologist Dr. Daniel Jackson travel through a mysterious circular dimensional portal that was discovered in Giza Egypt in 1928 and kept a secret by the military until the mysteries of the portal could be unlocked. Once on the other side, Jackson and O'Neil discover they are on the planet Abydos with a culture very similar to ancient Egypt. There they befriend the locals and do battle with the god Ra, revealed to be an alien who has enslaved humans on this planet and is intent on destroying the human race on Earth through the Stargate. In Star Trek Generations a single-minded, pleasure-seeking and murderous Dr. Tholian Soran attempts to destroy an entire solar system in order to get back into a heaven-like, temporal portal in the universe called The Nexus. It is up to the crew of the Starship Enterprise D, led by Captain Jean Luc Picard to stop Soran. Unfortunately, Picard proves to be too weak for the task and finds his ship and crew destroyed, the mission failed and he himself is trapped in the Nexus. Except…Captain James T. Kirk is also in the Nexus having landed in it 78 years earlier the Enterprise B encountered The Nexus on a rescue mission. Picard and Kirk join forces, leave the Nexus and stop Soran through the power of team work. San Francisco Chronicle Film Critic Mick LaSalle, when summarizing the 1994 Year in Film wrote, “In 20 years will anyone still be watching Stargate? Or Star Trek Generations?” I agreed with him wholeheartedly that these films were nothing but forgettable, but here we 30 years later and are still watching these works. Add to that, Stargate has had five spinoff TV series on the subject and they're still planning cinematic reboots. Star Trek Generations was listed implausibly as a one of the great epics in the 2004 book Epic movies and will forever be remembered as the film that killed off Captain Kirk. So, the burning question is WHY have these films endured? Find out! We need more development, Scotty! It's the return of Captain Montgomery Scott by way of James Doohan by way of a jury-rigged transporter buffer. The Enterprise encounters a Dyson sphere in the middle of space, and a Federation transport ship crashed on its massive surface. Geordi rescues Scotty from the transporter, but can't rescue him from feeling old. Like a relic from the past, if I may be so bold. The bridge of the Enterprise from the original series - NOT the movies - is visited in the holodeck, and the ambiguously engineer duo of Scotty and Geordi team up to get the ship out of the garage before the door closes. All in all, more was desired from this TOS incursion, but it was a good drink, nonetheless. Bright green, of course. Get in touch with us on BlueSky @ReEngageTNG.bsky.social! Boldly go into our most gloriously geektacular (and yes, longest) episode as Javi and Paul embark on an epic exultation of the soaring sacred text that is STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN. On June 4, 1982, Nicholas Meyer arguably saved the franchise by redefining it as a space opera mashup of Horatio Hornblower and Run Silent Run Deep, with a virtuosic score by the great James Horner. Instead of making sequel to 1979's STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE, Meyer cunningly chose to forge a follow-up to the 1967 episode “Space Seed,” reuniting Ricardo Montalban with the iconic role of Khan, unleashing his towering performance as the ultimate antagonist. (And stick around until the end for a shocking decision about what our next movie will be!)
The Spocklight crew beam down during the commercial break to cover a fascinating array of television adverts featuring the original series crew & much more. William Shatner cashes in on Commodore computers, Leonard Nimoy attempts to induct viewers into his Magnavox cult, James Doohan flogs some Star Trek themed plates, George Takei rides the bus, and take it from a Father who knows, you'll want a Star Trek meal from McDonald's after hearing a Klingon extol it's virtues. Come with us now on a hilarious journey to discover how the original series crew (and even some members of the next generation) will shill for any old tat if you pay them enough cash. Note: Unfortunately, the supercut we reference in this episode of the Original Series Crew commercials has now been set to private on YouTube but you can find all of the commercials mentioned separately on YouTube easily enough, they're well worth the search. This Canadian actor was most famous for his role as Montgomery Scott (Scotty), the chief engineer of the Starship Enterprise in the television and film series “Star Trek.” He did appear in other TV shows and movies, but was limited due to being typecast. James Doohan in real life was with a Canadian infantry division that landed at Juno Beach on D-Day. He was accidentally hit by six rounds of fire from the gun of a Canadian sentry. A bullet to his chest was stopped by a cigarette case given to him by his brother. One bullet hit his right middle finger, which had to be amputated. He would conceal that hand in the movies, sometimes using a flesh-colored glove. Doohan was part of a radio group, “The Neighborhood Playhouse” which included Leslie Nielsen and Tony Randall. Did James use an accent when he played Scotty? He'll answer that question. Because of the engineer character he played on “Star Trek,” many students pursued careers in engineering. The Milwaukee School of Engineering presented Doohan with an honorary degree in engineering.

Tread Perilously's annual Star Trek month continues with a look at Star Trek: The Animated Series and the episode called "The Magicks of Megas-Tu." When the Enterprise's latest mission takes them to the center of the galaxy -- yes, you read that right -- they find Megas-Tu, a world where the usual rules of matter and physics are set aside for something that can only be described as magick. There, the crew meets Lucien, a jovial goatman who regrets ever leaving the Earth. Unfortunately, the arrival of the Enterprise leads to a rather literal witch hunt with Kirk, Spock, and the others on trial and professing their sympathy for the devil. Justin argues TAS fits into the Original Series ethos. He also adds Night of the Lepus to The Full Peril watch list. Erik tries to remember the stated stardate for once. The imprecise use of the term "quadrant" is discussed. Gene Roddenberry's proclivities, naturally, come up again. The Filmation method is critiqued. The story's focus on the Devil leads to a lot of talk about the development of both Judaism and Christianity. Baphomet's PR team succeeds in restoring his rep. Erik has trouble with the Charm of Making. Various gods are cast with older actors. James Doohan ends up the episode MVP and even the Ancient Astronaut Theory makes its way into the proceedings.

On Episode 137 of the RETROZEST podcast, Curtis celebrates the 45th Anniversary of the premiere of Jason of Star Command! This was one of the few live-action Filmation shows which aired on Saturday mornings for kids from 1978 thru 1980. It was the sequel series to Space Academy (another Filmation show). Assisting Curtis in this endeavor is the lead actor who portrayed Jason himself; CRAIG LITTLER! Craig and Curtis had a wonderful behind the scenes discussion about Jason of Star Command; topics include working with James Doohan and Sid Haig, as well as how this show was much better than its predecessor. Craig also shares other key points of his very successful career (including his epic role in the Grey Poupon Mustard commercial, and his stint as the Gorton's Fisherman). If you'd like to watch all of Jason of Star Command, you may do so via this playlist on YouTube. Late last year, Celestis Memorial Spaceflights announced their next flight. Dubbed the Enterprise mission, it will see the remains of several Star Trek luminaries journeying into the final frontier on the Vulcan Centaur rocket. Since the announcement, I've had the pleasure of interviewing friends and family members of the late, great cast and crew who will be blasting off next month. Throughout the months of April and May, I'll be releasing those interviews. Wende Doohan got hitched to Star Trek's first engineer, James Doohan (Scotty in The Original Series), in 1974 and they remained married right up until his death in 2005. The Enterprise mission is only the latest in a string of memorial space flights in which Doohan's ashes have been included. Wende joined me to discuss her husband's life and legacy. The Enterprise mission is looking to blast off in June or July, and you'll be able to stream it live. For the latest on the flight's schedule, head over to Celests' website.

Captain Kirk pursues his biggest nuisance to a planet in the Arcadian system, where, sure enough, he finds Harry Mudd peddling his latest drug -- a so-called love potion -- to the miners working there. Turns out this love potion actually works and soon makes its way through the crew of the Enterprise, starting with Mr. Spock, much to the initial delight of Nurse Chapel. Completing a trilogy of sorts that started with "Mudd's Women" (one of the first "Star Trek" episodes ever produced) Stephen Kandell returned to write "Mudd's Passion" for "The Animated Series," which, fortunately, also saw Roger C. Carmel reprising his role as Harry Mudd. (Sorry, but there's no way James Doohan could have pulled that one off!) While far from being the crowning achievement of "The Animated Series," "Mudd's Passion" is an enjoyable-enough episode for "Star Trek" fans that saw the return of a beloved character. A little something different this week - Jason gives Brendan a Christmas present: a big movie that he has somehow never seen before - Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. As Brendan's first time watching any based-on-the-TV show Star Trek movie, he has some questions about Lady Spock and the overall reaction to her, Christopher Plummer flirting dangerously with an Asian stereotype, the progressive themes discussed with the humans/klingons relationship and much more. More importantly - did Brendan like a Star Trek or does the hate train roll on? Next week: Brendan returns the favour! Questions? Comments? Suggestions? This week Dana and Dan discuss "Arena." They talk about how Kirk battles with the Gorn, a lizard-like creature. They also discuss how explorers can be considered invaders, based on one's perspective. Dan talks about the time he met James Doohan and Dana tells the story about a startling discovery that was made in a box when he worked at UPS. The guys also talk about how they need podcast fans to submit ideas for a bet Dan and Dana want to make. And then there is Kirk comparing his stick to the Gorn's... The Filmlosophers and Cadet Amy say goodbye to the TOS cast as they venture into new lands with Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. 25 years' worth of stories, adventures, and camaraderie with this cast and crew end here, as the Starless Searchers take their conversation to areas unknown. Will the film end the exploits of the Enterprise on a high note? Or will they get lost in the rocky terrain of its own story? Let's sail into the last sunset and find out on this week's episode of The Filmlosphers!
The Filmlosophers and Cadet Amy continue their voyage across space and time with 1986's Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home. The Voyaging Voyeurs break down the plan from this entry with their time travel shenanigans, nuclear wessels, and whales to save the earth. Does this movie with its odd whale-based plot still hold up? Or is this film better left at the bottom of the ocean? Get ready to hit warp speed and find out on this week's episode of The Filmlosphers!
Comments from Tom Hardy, Jeri Taylor,James Doohan, Dr Marc Okrand, JG Hertzler, and Robert O'Reilly,
The Filmlosophers and Intern Amy enlist in Starfleet for the month of September, exploring the best of the Star Trek film franchise, starting with the first sequel of the saga, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. Often marked as one of the best of the Star Trek movies, the Tribble Troglodytes shine a light on the film that really brought the best parts of the series to the surface. Does this movie still hold up over the decades of technological advancement in film? Or has the campiness of the film really just proved that it was better left stranded on a barren planet? Get ready to beam up and find out on this week's episode of The Filmlosphers!

Despite appearances, it wasn't just a cartoon, it was STAR TREK. Take the journey to assemble the original cast, hear about the ups and downs of production, and enjoy the victory that proved STAR TREK LIVES!Live long and prosper and thanks for 'tooning in.

The second part of CLASSIC SEQUEL WEEK brings us another classic franchise entry from the Summer of 1982 – the crew of the USS Enterprise are back and they're involved in some hairy stuff. James T. Kirk (William Shatner) is now an Admiral for the Star Fleet and while joining the rest of the crew for what was originally going to be a “routine training mission” he finds out about the return of an old foe who is out for revenge against him. That foe is Khan played by Ricardo Montalban and not only is he out for vengeance against Kirk but he is now trying to nab a potentially dangerous new piece of technology from Star Fleet….the Genesis Device. And what follows is an epic space adventure including the rest of the cast from the The Original Series including Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelley, Nichelle Nichols, James Doohan, Walter Koenig, and George Takei. This was directed by Nicholas Meyer who modeled the narrative on that of a sea-faring adventure.
