On Episode 152 of the RETROZEST podcast, Curtis concludes the celebration of the 45th Anniversary of the premiere of STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE! This film is a 1979 American science fiction drama directed by Robert Wise. It is based on and stars the cast of the 1966–1969 television series Star Trek created by Gene Roddenberry, who serves as producer. In the film, set in the 2270s, a mysterious and powerful alien cloud known as V'Ger approaches Earth, destroying everything in its path. Admiral James T. Kirk (William Shatner) assumes command of the recently refitted Starship Enterprise to lead it on a mission to determine V'Ger's origins and save the planet. Assisting Curtis in this endeavor in an exclusive interview is CRAIG HUXLEY, former child actor and inventor of the "Blaster Beam" (the musical instrument which makes the V'GER Sting sounds on the Star Trek: The Motion Picture soundtrack)! He has used this instrument in other films including Star Trek II and Star Trek III, as well as more modern films like 10 Cloverfield Lane. What's even more interesting is that Craig was also a child actor and he actually appears in the 1967 Star Trek TOS episode "Operation Annihilate!", wherein he portrayed Captain Kirk's nephew, Peter Kirk. The following year, he had a different role in the TOS episode "And the Children Shall Lead". Additionally, he appeared in television shows such as Bewitched, The Flying Nun, Kung Fu and The Brady Bunch. Craig is joined in this interview by his lovely and talented daughter FIONA HUXLEY, who is a wonderful singer, songwriter, actress, and speaker in her own right! She masterfully assists Craig in talking about his career in and out of Star Trek, and how so much of what he has done has weaved itself into so many parts of the pop culture of the 1960s all the way up to the present! Be sure and follow Craig on Facebook, X (Twitter), Instagram and YouTube! You may also follow Fiona on Facebook, X (Twitter), Instagram and YouTube! When the Enterprise intercepts a stolen space cruiser, it beams aboard a group of rebellious space hippies that are searching for the mythical planet of Eden. What starts off as merely an annoyance to Captain Kirk turns downright dangerous when the hippies – led by the insane Dr. Sevrin – attempt to take over the Enterprise at all costs in an effort to fulfill their journey. Over the decades, “The Way to Eden” has become something of a veritable punching bag for “Star Trek” fans. And for many reasons (especially Spock's jam session), it's an easy one to punch. But credit must be given to “The Way to Eden” for taking a big swing and committing to its intentions, and it's not nearly as bad as, say, “And the Children Shall Lead” or “The Alternative Factor.” Back in 1969, it was “real now,” and it still is – so don't be a Herbert, and take it for the silly fun that it is. In this episode of Trekking Through Compliance, we consider the episode And The Children Shall Lead, which aired on October 11, 1968, Star Date 5027.1. An alien named the ‘Gorgon' takes over the minds of the children of colonists on Triacas. He causes the children to mind trick their parents into committing suicide as the colonists feel compelled to destroy themselves to escape what they call "the enemy within." As the Children are evacuated to the Enterprise to transport to Star Base 4, the Gorgon commands them to take over the Enterprise, which they temporarily do until Kirk and Spock break the spell and destroy the Gorgon. Compliance Takeaways: 1. How can you ask the right question? 2. Compliance leadership is a conversation. 3. Targeting your compliance message. After crossing paths with an alien vessel, a mysterious woman materializes on the Enterprise, only to knock the entire crew unconscious. When everyone comes to, they are horrified to discover the body of Mr. Spock clinging to life in Sickbay after having his brain removed with remarkable surgical precision. With very little to go on except a faint ion trail, Captain Kirk pursues the would-be culprit across the galaxy to an unexplored star system, where he must choose between three possible planets to find Spock's brain and have it restored in time to save his life. After mounting a trailblazing letter-writing campaign to save "Star Trek" from cancellation, fans were duly rewarded (or punished?) for their efforts when "Spock's Brain" was chosen to launch the third season on September 20, 1968. Since then, it has gained the notorious reputation as being the worst "Star Trek" episode of all time. But is it really that bad? Is it worse than, say, "And the Children Shall Lead" or "The Way to Eden?" The fact is, "Spock's Brain" starts off strong and features a stellar score composed by Fred Steiner. It isn't until the third act that the proceedings take a ridiculous turn for the worst, but one thing's for sure: "Spock's Brain" is never dull, so for that reason alone, maybe it's not so bad after all. The Enterprise responds to a distress call from a Federation outpost on the planet Triacus, only to arrive and find that the entire research team is dead from apparent suicide. What could have caused this? Only the surviving children know for sure, but they're too wrapped up in playing "Ring Around the Rosie" to care about their dead parents. After beaming back to the Enterprise, Captain Kirk discovers that the children are acting as a conduit to spread an evil force across the galaxy, and that force has incapacitated the entire crew from doing anything stop it. And so it goes with "And the Children Shall Lead," which has been widely panned for decades as one of the worst episodes of the entire series. But after producing four strong episodes in a row, how could the third season have taken such a big nosedive, and so quickly? Turns out it was a perfect storm of having a first-time "Star Trek" writer and a first-time "Trek" director being overseen by a new producer who didn't really get what "Star Trek" was all about. And then there was the ill-advised casting of attorney Melvin Belli in the key role of the "friendly angel." Though other fine episodes would soon follow, "And the Children Shall Lead" deserve its notorious reputation as the nadir of "Star Trek," and it sadly marks the beginning of the end of a once-great series. And The Children Shall Lead was the fourth episode of Star Trek's third season to air, with a group of children attempting to take control of the Enterprise with the aid of a ghoulish green apparition. In this episode Gerry and Iain discuss the old adage about working with children and animals. After the death of all the adults on a Federation colony, the apparently unaffected children come on board the Enterprise to be transported to the nearest Starbase. The eldest child, Tommy (Craig Hundley) leads the others in a series of games that show no indication of having processed the deaths of their parents. It soon transpires that the children are in the thrall of a Gorgon (celebrity attorney Melvin Belli) who encourages them to take control of the ship and change its destination, putting the safety of all aboard at risk. And The Children Shall Lead was directed by Marvin Chomsky, the first of his three episodes in the chair. The writer was Edward J. Lakso, thankfully his only writing credit for the show. In this episode Gerry and Iain considered why these children were quite so irritating. As the days go by and the time just passes, I'm reminded that my kid watches every move I make still, even moreso now that there isn't much else to look at. It's the easiest thing to do to allow her to go emerge herself in her phone to stay preoccupied. But honestly, it's not YouTube's job to mold her. Especially when she can be the one on YouTube being watched, collecting coins. If she wants, she will be the star of tomorrow. All of our kids will be, if we do our part to get them up and trying. We are working on manifesting an empowering future for ourselves, and even though we aren't sure how to exactly, we know you at least have to do SOMETHING to get something. Trial and error. Tread Perilously warps into Star Trek month with one of the least awesome episodes of the original series: "And the Children Shall Lead" When the Enterprise arrives on Triacus, they discover all of adult colonists have killed themselves in some sort of murder/suicide pact. Their children, meanwhile, play "Ring Around the Rosie." After experiencing a lack of confidence in a nearby cave, Captain Kirk beams the landing party and the children back to the ship. There, the children summon Gorgan (special guest star Melvin Belli), an ancient marauding spirit dedicated to finding his way to a planet filled with people. Will the children lead him to that world? Erik and Justin determine this is the episode everyone but Shatner did unwillingly. Justin also develops a theory behind great episodes of Star Trek and terrible ones. The pair's fascination with Brian Cox's portrayal of Melvin Belli in Zodiac fails them as Belli's part turns out to be quite small. They nonetheless imagine what his podcast would've been like. Erik's Spock impression disappears entirely into his Kirk impression. The sad UFP flag gets a shoutout. Space knives turn out to be less impressive than hoped for and DeForest Kelley becomes a minor villain in Justin's world.

Come suffer with us as we take a whack at one of the most appalling storylines of The Original Series. While the precious children are being manipulated into age-inappropriate self-love practices by a muumuu-clad cheese villain, we manage to find our own joy where we can. Jake experiences catharsis by sharing his feelings about child actors, Erin pushes the boundaries of some cultural taboos, and Philippe describes the slaughter involved in making a chinchilla fur coat. This episode's connection to Police Academy takes us all on a fun celebration of Michael Winslow, and, in a turn towards social redemption, we talk about Patches the Cat, and encourage our audience to adopt rescue animals.
