When you hear the words “child labor,” your mind may go to the turn-of-the-century photographs taken by Jacob Riis and Lewis Hine of the grim lives of tiny laborers toiling in mines and urban sweatshops. But recent news reports have revealed that child labor is alive and well in the United States in 2023. Jack Hodgson, a visiting professor in history at the University of Roehampton, joins the Belabored podcast to discuss child labor throughout U.S. history and in the context of labor and civil rights struggles that continue to this day. Late last year, SAG-AFTRA introduced two new podcast contracts that make it easy for producers to be flexible and creative in covering their podcasts at all budgets. Sue-Anne Morrow, National Director/Contract Strategic Initiatives & Podcasts at SAG-AFTRA, walks us through the details of these new agreements on the SAG-AFTRA podcast. From On The Line: Stories of BC Workers a remarkable but relatively unknown chapter of working-class solidarity. While waves of sympathy strikes to support the 1919 Winnipeg General Strike took place across Canada, the most pronounced of these was in Vancouver, B.C. Even after workers returned to their jobs, 325 women telephone operators stayed out for another two weeks. Our final segment today is from Labor History Today. A few weeks in the little town of Windber, Pennsylvania, the Pennsylvania Labor History Society and The Battle of Homestead Foundation were holding their “Annual Commemoration of the History of Working People” a daylong program on the United Mine Workers' 1922-23 Windber strike for union recognition, discussions on “Women in Coal and Steel” and “John Brophy and Labor Education”. Recent news reports have revealed that child labor is not just a historical relic in the United States—and some politicians want to undermine existing regulations, claiming that less oversight is good for business. On this edition of Parallax Views, the Troubled Teen Industry offers parents a way to "fix" their rambunctious children by sending them to schools and programs that specialize in tough love behavior modification. It turns out, however, that the Troubled Teen Industry appears to do more harm than good, leaving a trail of destruction and abuse in it's wake. Jack Hodgson, the filmmaker behind the upcoming Emancipated: A Troubled Teen Documentary, joins us to discuss the harrowing story of this abusive industry. Among the topics discussed:- What the troubled teen industry is; how children get taken away by the industry - WWASP and CEDU programs; the relationship between these programs and the violent cult Synanon founded by Charles Dietrich and claiming to help heroin addicts - The experiences of the teens sent to these programs - Whistleblowers within the troubled teen industry - And much, much more.

Alasdair Hooper hosts a Judo Special ahead of the 2018 IBSA Judo World Championships with British team member Jack Hodgson. The Rio 2016 Paralympian is one of the more experienced members of the British Judo team selected to compete at this year's World Championships. However, the run up to the tournament has been far from smooth for the 22-year-old who recently underwent elbow surgery. Hodgson has had to contend with a disrupted training programme for the last while but his determination to compete is clear for all to see - as is his love for the sport. As a youngster, when he started to lose his sight, Hodgson was told he wouldn't able to do any type of sport but watching the visually impaired athletes at the London 2012 Paralympics told him differently. Now, following one of the toughest periods in his time as a professional athlete, Hodgson is hoping to apply that same level of commitment as he eyes up medal-winning success in the short and the long term. **Messages** Follow us on Twitter - https://twitter.com/SportSpielPod?lang=en Like us on Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/SportSpielPod/ Follow us on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/sportspielpod/ Get in touch: sportspielpod@gmail.com Visit our website: sportspielonline.com **Credits** Image credit: Mike Varey, elitepix Music: Otis McDonald
Jack Hodgson takes the bully mic for a pre-show discussion of what it takes to put on a hometown airshow in some of the most complicated airspace in North America.
Pilot, producer, and Uncontrolled Airspace co-host Jack Hodgson joins us to talk about the pilot population, flight training, the future of the aviation podsphere, and more in this nearly-two-hour conversation. Think you know Jack? Listen in!
Dave and Jeff (back row), Jim, Rob, Len, Kristen, Rick, Dorrie, Jack and Rick (Photo by Jeff Ward)In this episode, I talk with David Torrente about the recent flights we have taken together. All of them were up to Nashua NH to meet the gang at the UCAP meet-up. All three of them were somewhat adventurist and we learned a lot from them. We discuss what happened, our decisions, why we made the decisions and most importantly what we learned from each flight. So if you want to hear what happened along the way to Nashua, please join us in the virtual hangar. I hope you enjoy the discussion and maybe even learn something from it. As always, I had goals for this flight. One was to go on a cross-country flight. This is the one area where I would like to improve upon. Most of my hours up until this year have been either spent practicing or short sight-seeing trips around LI. I really want to fly more XC flights and get more comfortable landing at unfamiliar airports. As you will hear from this episode, Dave has more experience than me in XC flying and there is no one better to fly them with. A second goal was to meet the Jack and the gang for brunch at the midfield café. Isn't that what getting your PPL is all about? Flying to an airport with a good restaurant to hang out with friends. Not only were these goals met, but as you will hear, we had some practice de-icing a plane and diverting to other airports.Dave & Jack in conversation.Kristen and Len from the Stuck Mic AvCast.Myself, Dave and Jack.Dave, Rick and Dorrie in front of Rick's 172The gang chatting after a good mealWaiting for take-off. Hopefully not as eventful as our last few. 2) Jack Hodgson for arranging the meetups. They are a lot of fun. A great opportunity to meet up with friends that you only see at aviation events. 3) Dave Pascoe from LiveAtc.net, Rick Felty and Len Costa from the Stuck Mic AvCast (it was also great meeting Rick's wife Dorrie and Len's girlfriend Kristen), Jeff Ward from behind the scenes at UCAP, Rick Sheppe and Jim Goldman who were at the meetup. 4) A big shoutout to Bradley approach who helped us find the airport when we needed to land.Podcast Promos:1) Pilots Journey Podcast2) Plane Crazy Down Under3) The Aviation Media NetworkBlue skies and tailwinds always. You can reach me at TheNewPilotPodBlog@gmail.comPlease send comments and suggestions. You can follow me on Twitter at twitter.com/NewPilotPodBlogAnd LIPilot on myTransponder.comPlease join the myTransponder.com group Friends of The New Pilot PodBlog. The New Pilot PodBlog is now on facebook at http://www.facebook.com/TheNewPilotPodBlogThe intro and closing song is John Mellencamp's My Aeroplane.Direct access to the mp3 is here
Hello Everybody. This episode is my recollections and imperessions of my first trip to Oshkosh. We spent 3 days at AirVenture, camping at Camp Scholler. I participated in Podapalooza on Friday night along with other aviation podcasters. This trip was very special for me since I was able to share my passion of aviation and my first trip to AirVenture with my sons. This was our first "boys" trip together and what a trip it was.The one thing that I will take from this trip is how social media is helping to bring people together, especially the aviation community. I met many of my "social media" friends for the first time in person at Oshkosh. We have all become friendly through Twitter, forums and listening to each other's podcasts. Even before I arrived at Oshkosh I already had meetups scheduled with my friends. So instead of not knowing anyone there, I had parties and meetups to go to. This is what our small community is all about. Strangers coming together with a single, common interest and hanging out like we knew each other for years. You can see my pictures from Oshkosh at http://www.flickr.com/photos/robertcigliano/sets/72157624676352535/Some housekeeping,The URL for the web site has changed to be less of a mouthful, TheNewPilotPodBlog.com (removing blogspot from the name). The old URL will still work.I am using new equipment, a Behringer XM8500 microphone and Behringer Xenyx802 mixer. I hope the audio quality has improved. I plan to make some more equipment purchases. Please let me know if you hear any improvements.I also have finally created a logo.
