This podcast interview focuses on product innovation that has the power to improve your team's happiness, engagement, and collaboration. My guest is Doug Camplejohn, CEO at Airspeed. Doug Camplejohn is a Tech-Entrepreneur on a Mission. Before his entrepreneurial ventures, he was VP of Marketing and Product Management at enterprise (Epiphany), security (Vontu), and consumer (Apple) companies. Then he founded and and became the CEO of three startup companies. Myplay, who got acquired by Bertelsmann. Mi5 Networks, which was acquired by Symantec. Finally, Fliptop, which was acquired by LinkedIn. In January 2020, he left LinkedIn to become the EVP and GM of Salesforce Sales Cloud.  In July 2021, he founded Airspeed, a suite of Slack and mobile apps that provide fun and simple ways to connect with your teammates. Their mission: to help employees feel connected and celebrated And this inspired me, and hence I invited Doug to my podcast. We explore what's broken in the way businesses build culture in a remote-first world. Doug shares his vision of how to fix this by means of technology - creating an operating system for culture. As we discuss his journey, he explains what early decisions had been fundamental to avoid having to do a complete rebuild when his product hypothesis appeared wrong. He also dives into how he arrived at the perfect shipping cadence for his business and his customers, and how he embraced a language to encourage everyone to push the art of the possible. Last but not least, he shares their approach to creating momentum by leveraging customer stories. Here's one of his quotes We've seen tremendous traction, thousands of companies, and tens of thousands of users on the apps in the first few weeks.  It's all about this understanding that employee connectedness is either the number one cause of retention if you're happy and you're really feeling connected to the team and the mission, or the number one cause of unhappiness and people departing when it's not. And so this is really about reinforcing that. During this interview, you will learn four things: How do you build tremendous traction at the launch stage of your SaaS product Why you should be firm on the destination but flexible on the path. Why everyone should be involved in product - not only the product department - and everyone should be looking at the metrics. How to accelerate  growth by leveraging tech to serve product-qualified leads to Sales For more information about the guest from this week: Doug Camplejohn Website Airspeed Subscribe to the Daily SaaS Reflection Get my free, 1 min daily reflection on shaping a B2B SaaS business no one can ignore. He's a frequent speaker at industry events and is passionate about leveraging technology for innovation and improvement. The conversation suggests that employees should proactively seek out mentors and engage with colleagues through tools like virtual meetings and apps designed for connecting people.Remote Work Offers a Global Talent Pool: The ability to hire talent from around the world is a major benefit of remote work. This global talent pool allows companies to find and employ individuals with the skills they need without being restricted to a specific geographic location.Work-Life Harmony:  Companies should emphasize "work-life harmony" rather than "work-life balance." Remote work allows employees to have more flexibility in managing their work schedules to accommodate personal commitments, ultimately leading to happier and more balanced lives.Doug's Top 3 Takeaways for the Audience:1.     You can't leave culture to chance; you have to be deliberate. 2.     Culture isn't about words on a plaque. People are everything. 3.    The role of startup CEOs, and even managers in larger corporations, is MVP (Money, Vision, People). Welcome to the Part Time Pilot Audio Ground School Podcast! This podcast is going to be all about providing student pilots with ANOTHER way that they can consume the Private Pilot curriculum. The #1 reason student pilots never end up becoming a private pilot is NOT due to money. The real reason is actually deeper than that. Yes, flight training is expensive. But every student pilot knows this and budgets for it when they decide to do it. The actual #1 reason a student pilot fails is because they do not have a good, fundamental understanding of the private pilot knowledge they are meant to learn in ground school. You see when a student does not have a good grasp of this knowledge they get to a point in their flight training where their mind just can't keep up. They start making mistakes and having to redo lessons. And THAT is when it starts getting too expensive. This audio ground school is meant for the modern day student pilot... aka the part time student pilot. Let's face it, the majority of us have full time responsibilities on top of flight training. Whether it is a job, kids, family, school, etc. we all keep ourselves busy with the things that are important to us. And with today's economy we have to maintain that job just to pay for the training. The modern day student pilot is busy, on the go and always trying to find time throughout his or her day to stay up on their studies. The audio ground school allows them to consume high quality content while walking, running, working out, sitting in traffic, traveling, or even just a break from the boring FAR/AIM or ground school lecture. Did I meant high quality content? The audio ground school is taken straight out of the 5-star rated Part Time Pilot Online Ground School that has had over 350 students take and pass their Private Pilot exams without a SINGLE STUDENT FAILING. We do this by keeping ground school engaging, fun, light and consumable. We have written lessons, videos, audio lessons, live video lessons, community chats, quizzes, practice tests, flash cards, study guides, eBooks and much more. Part Time Pilot was created to be a breath of fresh air for student pilots. To be that flight training provider that looks out for them and their needs. So that is just what we are doing with this podcast.   Episode 60: In this episode, we continue our cross-country planning by exploring the vital concept of calculating True Airspeed (TAS) during both the cruise and descent phases of flight. Pilots must be prepared to recalculate TAS as they change altitudes or encounter temperature variations during their journey. Understanding and using TAS ensures safer and more efficient flights in varying atmospheric conditions.   Links mentioned in the episode: Online Ground School: https://parttimepilot.com/private-pilot-online-ground-school/?utm_source=podcast How to Become a Private Pilot FREE Course: https://parttimepilot.com/free-how-to-become-a-pilot/ Ultimate Private Pilot Test Prep Book: https://amzn.to/40LSyLM Calculate True Airspeed in Cruise & Descent Video: https://youtu.be/4ddBh4bHAdg      15% Off Aviation Headsets Discount: Part Time Pilot Students & Listeners can now receive 15% off & Free Shipping on Kore Aviation Headsets using the coupon code 'parttimepilot': https://www.koreheadset.com/discount/parttimepilot

Episode 59: In this episode, I explain how to find true airspeed for your cross-country plan during the climb phases of your flight. During climb, you are taught to target an indicated airspeed such as best rate or best angle of climb. Therefore, we must start from an indicated airspeed to get to our true airspeed. I explain how and go over a few examples.  Links mentioned in the episode: Online Ground School: https://parttimepilot.com/private-pilot-online-ground-school/?utm_source=podcast How to Become a Private Pilot FREE Course: https://parttimepilot.com/free-how-to-become-a-pilot/ Ultimate Private Pilot Test Prep Book: https://amzn.to/40LSyLM         15% Off Aviation Headsets Discount: Part Time Pilot Students & Listeners can now receive 15% off & Free Shipping on Kore Aviation Headsets using the coupon code 'parttimepilot': https://www.koreheadset.com/discount/parttimepilot

Doug, welcome to the show. Thanks for having me, Steve. Well, I'm excited to have you because you have a really interesting combination of backgrounds, big tech, and then from big tech going to startup and actually serial big tech to startup, which is not that common. So how do you evolve being a top executives of Apple, LinkedIn, and Salesforce to finding your own startup? Yeah, I started my career at Apple, came out of Carnegie Mellon University and worked on a little project called QuickTime there for a few years. And then for a number of years, I was in startups, had joined startups and kind of seen firsthand how it's done and also how it's not done. And then decided to do my own. My first was a company called Fliptop that was a music locker before iPods and before iTunes, and that got acquired by Bertelsmann. Then I went on to start a security company, MI5 Networks, named after the British secret agent, secret service that I got acquired by Symantec. And then the last company was a company called Fliptop, and that was doing machine learning for sales and marketing and that was acquired by LinkedIn. So I was at LinkedIn running the sales navigator team for about four years, and then got acquired, then got recruited over to Salesforce to be the general manager of Sales Cloud. And I started in February of 2020. So you know how this goes. Six weeks later, the world looks like this. And on the one hand, I loved it. I never want to go back to an office five days a week ever again. But I miss people. And we did all the same things that everybody else did. We did Zoom happy hours and lots of fun Slack channels and more all hands meetings and communication. And it was in the middle of that I realized, wow, there's really no central place for all this information is being kept. There's no operating system to culture system record. And that's how Airspeed was born. Okay, so I'm going to ask you about Airspeed because I'm really curious about this concept of the culture operating system, so to say. But before we go there, I want to just ask you about, so you had this company flipped up, and then you sold it to LinkedIn, and then you became, you ran the Sales Navigator. What formerly was your business, LinkedOut, or that's a different? No, so Sales Navigator, at the time I joined LinkedIn, LinkedIn makes its money in multiple ways. So obviously advertising is a big piece of it, but recruiting up until recently, I think was the biggest, may still be the biggest division, multi-billion dollar part of LinkedIn's revenue, selling a version of LinkedIn called LinkedIn Recruiter. So Sales Navigator was a version of LinkedIn for salespeople to help them find leads and find accounts to go after. And the acquisition of Fliptop was helping them do integration with CRMs like Salesforce and syncing those systems in a better way. So we took it from when I was there, it was about $250 million division. It's now over a billion dollar business for LinkedIn. So it was a big growth curve over those four years. Yeah. No, sales navigators definitely. Sometimes I can't even make the difference. What's the difference between sales navigator and LinkedIn? They look the same thing and with an interface. And LinkedIn used to include some of the same functionalities that now sales navigator includes. So it's just confusing, but that's cool. So with the pandemic,

Every time we adjust to a new way of working – or a new way of leading a team – a new, radical transformation appears on the horizon. Right now, it's AI and the rise of the robots. Tomorrow? Who knows.  Today we sit down with Doug Camplejohn, a renowned tech executive and startup advisor with more than two decades of experience working with companies like Microsoft, LinkedIn, and Salesforce. We discuss the AI revolution, the future of workplace culture, and how Doug's latest venture - Airspeed - is working to connect and celebrate employees in a digital world.  Learn more about Doug and Airspeed here: https://www.getairspeed.com/blog/author/doug/ *What leads to a happy life? Happiness means different things to each of us. After doing extensive research, Management 3.0 founder Jurgen Appelo discovered the common thread: Happiness is something we create. It is not something to achieve. It is a path you choose, not a destination to arrive at. So many of us spend our lives in pursuit of happiness. Instead of searching for it, we need to find ways to live it, embrace it, and implement it into our daily lives. That's why we created the 12 Steps to Happiness at Management 3.0. How do you take a startup, or really any game-changing idea, from conception to launch and success in the new native digital world? And how do we connect and celebrate with our colleagues in this new native digital world? Our guest Doug Camplejohn, has given a lot of thought to both of those questions. Doug Camplejohn is the founder and CEO of Airspeed. And it has been remarkable to see how Doug and his team has stayed true to a true north vision to solving a problem that matters, but at the same time be super flexible in both thinking, product development, and marketing, Pay special attention to Doug's wisdom about why the questions, “are you having fun?” and “do you care if you get fired?” are such powerful questions, and how they can affect a person's decision-making. You're listening to Christopher Lochhead: Follow Your Different. We are the real dialogue podcast for people with a different mind. So get your mind in a different place, and hey ho, let's go. Doug Camplejohn on how to create a Startup The conversation starts with Doug explaining his approach to creating a startup. Doug explains that entrepreneurs are constantly looking for patterns and problems to solve, and he keeps a "suck list" of bad things and ideas that stick with him. He believes in being firm on the vision but loose on the details, and that good ideas don't die but instead become something he can devote the next decade of his life to pursuing. Doug further explains that he and his team at Airspeed started with a clear goal in mind: to make employees feel more connected and celebrated, even if the details of how they got there changed along the way. The Trap of following the “Perfect Plan” The importance of having a clear problem direction rather than being solely focused on a product vision is further addressed by Christopher and Doug. They discuss how some entrepreneurs can become obsessed with a particular product idea and then struggle to pivot when it fails. Doug also believes in solving a problem that is personally meaningful and resonates with others, rather than chasing after the latest hot technology. He believes that if the problem statement is genuine and resonates with people, the solution and approach to solving it can be flexible and evolve over time. Product Direction vs Problem Direction They then talk about the importance of having a problem direction rather than a product direction. They talk about how many entrepreneurs become obsessed with a product vision and then realize they need to pivot one day. Because there are other factors to consider, from the top to the bottom of the organization. Finding a problem that is personally meaningful to the entrepreneur and resonates with others, according to Doug, is critical. They also discuss the difficulty of changing product direction and how it affects morale. Doug believes that taking a balanced approach, planning ahead of time and breaking it down into smaller chunks, can help with flexibility and adaptation while still maintaining a clear vision. "Small mistakes can have big consequences."When Hasard Lee was learning to dogfight in the F-16 fighter jet, he made a minor error while maneuvering the plane vertically and his airspeed dropped to 0. With afterburners fully engaged - sending a 30 ft flame from the back of the plane - he and the $70m jet were going backward. The nose of the plane suddenly snapped downward, and - at negative 2.4 G's - he's being pulled upward with over 500 pounds of force. With alarms blaring, he's heading into an out-of-control spin toward the Earth. 5 seconds before impact, Lee was able to stabilize the craft and regain airspeed. Based on years of experience making high-stakes, split-second decisions as a fighter pilot and later awarded 'Top Instructor Pilot of the Year' for the Air Force's largest F-16 Combat Wing, Hasard has spent the last six years cementing his knowledge in the new book The Art of Clear Thinking, which teaches readers to make clear decisions in their everyday life.Lee has also amassed a YouTube following that's watched over 10 million times each month and a 290 million person reach across social media in just two years. In today's conversation, James and Hasard pivot between death-defying stories and the principles that help make rational clear-headed decisions to avoid disaster and succeed.Buy The Art of Clear Thinking here from your favorite retailer!Check out  Hasard's WebsiteWatch Hasard's YouTube channel, (10+ million views every month!)------------What do YOU think of the show? It's a great tool for simple projects, but an excellent tool for anything data science related since it plays so nicely with things like pandas Michael #4: ASV via Will McGugan AirSpeed Velocity (asv) is a tool for benchmarking Python packages over their lifetime. Runtime, memory consumption and even custom-computed values may be tracked. See quickstart Example of astropy here. Finding a commit that produces a large regression Brian #5: perflint Anthony Shaw pylint extension for performance anti patterns curious why a pylint extension and not a flake8 plugin. I think the normal advice of “beware premature optimization” is good advice. But also, having a linter show you some code habits you may have that just slow things down is a nice learning tool. Many of these items are also not going to be the big show stopper performance problems, but they add unnecessary performance hits. To use this, you also have to use pylint, and that can be a bit painful to start up with, as it's pretty picky. Tried it on a tutorial project today, and it complained about any variable, or parameter under 3 characters. Seems a bit picky to me for tutorials, but probably good advice for production code. These are all configurable though, so you can dial back the strictness if necessary. perflint checks: W8101 : Unnessecary list() on already iterable type W8102: Incorrect iterator method for dictionary W8201: Loop invariant statement (loop-invariant-statement) ←- very cool W8202: Global name usage in a loop (loop-invariant-global-usage) R8203 : Try..except blocks have a significant overhead. Avoid using them inside a loop (loop-try-except-usage). W8204 : Looped slicing of bytes objects is inefficient. Use a memoryview() instead (memoryview-over-bytes) W8205 : Importing the "%s" name directly is more efficient in this loop. (dotted-import-in-loop) Emily #6: PEP 594 Acceptance “Removing dead batteries from the standard library” Written by Christian Heimes and Brett Cannon back in 2019, though the conversation goes back further than that It's a very thin line for modules that might still be useful to someone versus the development effort needed to maintain them. Welcome to this special addition of A Champion's Journey podcast coming to you from Skydive Arizona where I'm currently training with Arizona Airspeed 4-way Formation Skydiving Team. Airspeed is a team with a rich legacy dating back to the early 1990's. Over that time, they've been a formidable powerhouse on the National and International stages, winning Championship titles several times over.Today, we'll have a conversation with Airspeed's Team Captain, National and World Champion, Niklas Hemlin. Nik is one of the hardest working people I've ever met. His drive and passionate obsession for his craft are uncommon even amongst his peers. In addition to being a World class athlete, Nik is a phenomenal coach, highly skilled and well versed in the rich and layered nuances of Formation Skydiving. Nik's Journey has had it's share of obstacles along the way, but his vision and relentless dedication in leading Airspeed on the path to victory have given him the strength to overcome and become one of the best skydivers and most sought after coaches in the sport today.
