Launch Your Business with God Zach Windahl pt 1 Have you ever felt that everything you touched did not turn to gold? But instead, just went from good to bad to worse? Everything. Everything you believed in. Everything you tried to do? My guest today faced that very dilemma. In 2014, Zach Windahl went from bad to worse. He always had a plan, until that time. He was broken. He was lost. He started to contemplate everything he had believed in. He had grown up as a Christian, but things were so bad, he realized he had no idea what that meant. He started to look at religion in a very different light. He stated to look at Christianity in America. He realized that every single religion OUTSIDE of Christianity, took their faith seriously. But in the United States, Christians rarely read their Bibles and the ideals that are labeled as “Christian” can be very skewed from one faith to another. This started Zach on a mission. He decided to read the Bible straight through. Not in in a year, but in 90 days. He wanted to seek the TRUTH. And he understood that God's Word is the Truth. So, he set out seek THE TRUTH. Long story short, he came to some magnificent revelations. The first one occurred in – Genesis Chapter one! Praise God! Zach Windahl has helped thousands of people better understand the Bible and grow closer to God through his company, “The Brand Sunday.” He's the author of several books, including “The Bible Study” and his recent book, https://amzn.to/3ks2tTR (“Launch with God – How to Build a Business That Matters and Live Out Your God-Given Purpose”) When you seen in the Bible that God “creates,” what did that mean for you? Explain how you came to the understanding that God's story continues even to today… How does someone find themselves in God's Story, as you share in your book? How can we, as you put it, “lean into our talents?” One of the things you've discovered older folks, myself included, wish they could've done more of is to have spent more time with their family, and, instead of working at a job for someone else, they wished they would've pursued their dreams. How did that impact you and what you are doing now? Because of time, I want to jump towards the end of your book. Especially about “Building a Team.” Because of my leadership training the military, I have spoken at several business conferences on the topic of “Team Building.” So this section absolutely caught my attention… You state, “In general, if you're great at something in business, stick with it. If you're good at it, do it until you can afford to pay someone else to do it. And if you're bad at it, hire someone to do it now.” I absolutely agree, but I also get asked, when I say this, “But I can't afford to hire anybody, so I have to just try and get it done as best I can right now…” What do you say about that type of comment? How can someone just starting out find help? One chapter in your book, https://amzn.to/3ks2tTR (“Launch with God,”) you share about “Removing Obstacles.” What do you see as the biggest obstacle that faces most of us down? I had to laugh, again, when I read the part about running a business, being an entrepreneur, is not a sprint – it's not even a marathon! You called it an “ultra-marathon!” Can you explain that for our listeners? Who is Justin Zoradi and how did he influence you? When we seek advice about or dream, about our business, whom should we seek advice from and who should be avoid? Zach, we are about out of time. Where can someone get a copy of your book, https://amzn.to/3ks2tTR (“Launch with God”)? Is it on Amazon? If someone wants to get in touch with you, to ask a question or maybe do an interview like this, how can they do that? How can they get in touch with you? Folks, I cannot recommend this book, “Launch with God,” by Zach Windahl more highly. You need to go down into the show notes and order your copy of https://amzn.to/3ks2tTR (“Launch with Support this podcast

When it comes to our callings, we often feel pressured to accomplish all that God has called us to as soon as possible. But this is what leads us to pursue the resume virtues and abandon the eulogy virtues of who we are. We feel that because we have been called, we must also be responsible for the results of our callings. But nowhere does God call us to produce a certain result. He calls us to obedience. And so in this chapter, Justin reminds us that often the best approach is one that emphasizes our relationships with people over trying to achieve results. And it's in these seemingly small actions we take in the everyday moments of life where the Kingdom of God is able to break through into this world and bring us God's will. The Teacher in Ecclesiastes wrote, "For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven." While it's important to work, it's also important to rest and recognize your dependence on God. As we do this, we find God works in seasons in our lives. At times we're moving quickly and our schedules are full. But other times he calls us back to rest and dependence on him. In this chapter, Justin tells his story of stepping away from the company he founded and what it was like to face an identity crisis. What he found in the aftermath of that decision was a call to rest and a call to remember who he was in Christ. And from that place, God moved him again into another season of fulfilling work. When it comes to following God's call on our lives, it's easy to get so wrapped up in serving God that we forget to be with Him. We get so concerned with doing the next thing, and the next thing that we begin to define ourselves by what we do, not who we are in Christ. Justin calls this, the pursuit of the “Resume Virtues.” But we need to stop and ask, “What will they say about us at our funerals?" Will they be talking about the items on our resumes, or will they be talking about the kind of person we were. How we were kind, loving, and patient. Or how treated the people around us. That's why we need to pursue God's calling on our lives with these "Eulogy Virtues" in mind. As Justin talks about in this chapter, it's good that we should pursue our callings, but we must not seek achievements and accomplishments if we lose sight of who we are. God has a calling on your life. And part of a discipleship lifestyle is serving with purpose in that calling. When you do this well, you feel great about yourself and who you are. It's like everything is right in the world. To say it another way, you feel fulfilled. But what happens when your calling and the work you find so fulfilling faces obstacles and setbacks? What do you do when the people you love most tell you your dreams and your work aren't worth pursuing? In this first chapter of our conversation with Justin, he tells his own story of following God's call on his life as he started an organization to fund the education of African young people. But it wasn't an easy journey. And along the way he encountered multiple obstacles. But he also found help as he continued to pursue God's call on his life in service to others. Justin Zoradi believes with the strongest conviction that without exception, we were made for these times. That means you – and it means me. But many of us wonder how that can be true when we are saddled with self-doubt and the haunting voices of failures, abuses, and regrets from the past. Justin has a contagious and unique way of describing his belief – and you’ll enjoy hearing him explain it as he and Dane discuss the purpose every human being is intended to make in the world, on this episode of Converge. In the end, we are all our own worst enemies As human beings, it s true – we are often our own worst critics. The things we say to ourselves, in our own heads, are enough to discourage anyone regardless of background or upbringing. But Justin has discovered that when we are able to battle those voices of inner criticism and doubt effectively, a powerful force for good is unleashed on the world. That force is us. Find out how Justin has focused his efforts around this belief and the ways it s impacting the world, on this episode. Beating the comparison game: They have their story and I have mine It s been said that the tendency to compare another person s success over a long period of time with our own lack of success when just starting out, is one of the biggest mistakes we make as human beings. That idea sparked a question in Dane s mind that he was eager to ask Justin: What tools has Justin found to help him fight the comparison game effectively? Justin s answer was simple and powerful. Any time he s aware that he s beginning to compare himself to someone else, he repeats this phrase over and over as needed, They have their story and I have mine. Find out how this simple truth sets Justin free from the trap of comparison, by listening to this episode. What will it take for you to believe you are made for these times? Behind Justin s conviction that every person on the planet can make a powerful positive difference is a foundational truth: nobody was created by accident or without purpose. That means that even the timing of your birth and the place where you live are positionings that have inserted you into the world in such a way that you are able to make your unique impact. You really should hear the way Justin explains it in this conversation. It s well worth the time it will take you to listen. Ordinary is powerful. Don t listen to the voices that tell you differently As this conversation came to a close Dane asked Justin what he would say to the person who feels that they are nothing special, that they are just an ordinary person living an ordinary life. His response? Ordinary is powerful. Nobody in history who has made a significant difference started out as an above-average person. They had to fight their way up, through self-doubt and discouragement to become the powerful force they are known to be in history. The same will be true for all of us ordinary people – because we were made for these times. Justin Zoradi’s important work began the day he decided to no longer deny opportunities to others that he demanded for himself. This realization was sparked while working in South Africa in 2006, where he met several bright students who wanted to go to college but couldn't afford it. Today, Justin Zoradi is an award winning social entrepreneur, the author of the book Made for These Times, and the founder of These Numbers Have Faces, an international education nonprofit helping African youth attend college and transform their countries forever. Truth be told, this social enterprise started during the recession in 2008, with zero business skills from the couch of Justin’s apartment. The rest is history. Justin holds an MA in International Conflict Resolution from Portland State University and a BA in Communication Studies from Westmont College. His past work includes Doing Work That Matters, as well as his upcoming book, Made for These Times: A Start-Up Guide to Calling, Character, and Work That Matters available for pre-order. In this conversation, Branden and Justin dive deep into a story of empowerment, responsibility and clarity as a compassionate leader trying to make a difference in the world.
