In today's world, one of the ways in which we divide people into groups and rate their value is according to their jobs. Parents, we have to teach our kids something different. I love these words of truth from Abraham Kuyper: "Preachers and plumbers aren't any different. What God requires of them each is the same: not a dime's less than everything. Missionaries are no more holy than factory workers or soccer players or the unemployed. Life, lived near unto God, is holy service. . . Whether you do art, bus tables, lay concrete, clean toilets, bring up kids, care for the elderly, perform brain surgery, pump gas, clean teeth, play football, or shine shoes - no matter what you do - do it to his honor and glory. After all, our life is a whole, the component parts of which - play, duty, leisure - must be wrapped in our love like a present, then laid at the feet of our God." Parents, God has gifted your children in unique ways. Teach them to live into their gifts, that all work matters to God, and all work brings him glory!

Originally Uploaded June 28th, Re-edited July 29th. Jeffrey Mosher welcomes Dalton Herbel, MBA, NHA, Vice President for Public Policy, LeadingAge Michigan, Lansing, MI, but serving statewide. Welcome Dalton, remind the Michigan business community about the services and purpose of LeadingAge Michigan? I understand, to support Michigan's senior caregivers, LeadingAge Michigan welcomed over 320 healthcare providers and affiliated business partners recently in May to its 'Work That Matters' conference in Kalamazoo. Tell us about that? So, there was education, inspiration & networking, and LeadingAge provided free registration to annual conference, tell us more? I also understand that the conference theme, Work That Matters, mirrors LeadingAge's workforce development initiative of the same name. MDHHS saw value in that with a grant award - what were the details? Anything else we should know at this time?
“If you love what you do, you'll never work a day in your life.” We hate that quote! It corrupts the idea of meaningful work and cons us into believing that our work shouldn't actually feel like work. Truth is, even meaningful work feels like work. Rewarding, fulfilling, life-giving work…..but still work. In today's episode, host Travis Shelton hashes through this idea to portray a different picture of what meaningful work should look and feel like. In a fast-paced world, it's easy to feel overwhelmed and question the significance of our daily efforts. But remember what God says in Ephesians 2:10: "For we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” As we navigate the challenges and opportunities of the city, let's embrace the unique purpose God has for each of us. Whether it's through acts of kindness, community service, or simply being a light in someone's life, our work has eternal value. If you are new to Community Church, WELCOME! Of Solomon. Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labour in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the guards stand watch in vain. In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for food to eat – for he grants sleep to those he loves. Children are a heritage from the Lord, offspring a reward from him. Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are children born in one's youth. Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them. They will not be put to shame when they contend with their opponents in court.
How do you get the job, or position, or career, where the work that you do matters - and not just to your employer - but to you? Few experiences in life are as awful as the feeling of being trapped in the wrong career. But how do you find a job that truly resonates with you? And once you've found it, how do you develop the confidence to take the necessary steps to arrive at the career of your dreams? Or how do you recover from a career setback and seize new opportunities? Or, what if you are returning after a time away from being in the workforce? How do you deal with the uncertainty behind a career change and what gives you the confidence to hit a reset-switch on your professional life? These are the questions, areas and issues in which Octavia Goredema thrives, as she works to help others navigate their own personal career success. Octavia is the host of the Audible Original series, How to Change Careers with Octavia Goredema and the author of PREP, PUSH, PIVOT: Essential Career Strategies for Underrepresented Women, published by Wiley. Octavia founded Twenty Ten Agency, a career coaching practice, where she has coached leaders at Google, American Airlines, Tinder, General Motors, Nike, and Dow Jones, to name but just a few. Her insights have been featured in leading media outlets including Fortune, CNN, Fast Company, Harvard Business Review, the Los Angeles Times, The Guardian, and Black Enterprise, among others. During the pandemic she co-hosted “HBR Now,” the Harvard Business Review's weekly show on leadership, and this year she contributed a chapter to the Harvard Business Review's new book, Navigating the Toxic Workplace. I see her work as a gift shared with her readers, her listeners, and her clients. Her wisdom, her transparency in the sharing of her experiences, and what she does, all demonstrate how she lives her life in full, and in the service of others.

Studies show that 70% of Americans dislike or hate their job. It's an epidemic. Worse, it's an epidemic we're unknowingly passing on to our kids. Host Travis Shelton recently had the opportunity to share some insight and encouragement on this topic with 1,000 eighth and ninth graders. In today's episode, we're speaking to parents. As parents ourselves, we believe our kids deserve better than to wake up each morning for the next 40+ years with dread or indifference. We believe they can (and should) pursue a meaningful and fulfilling life. And one massive piece of that is work that matters. Let's talk about it!
Doing work that matters—work that really lights you up—can impact your health and longevity so much that the goal of creating that kind of working-life is fast becoming a central theme in the new world of work. People seek work that matters, but for the longest time there hasn't been a place dedicated to helping people find that work. To solve this problem, Hannah Phang co-founded The Now Work, a platform that connects people who have world-changing skills and aspirations with world-changing work and companies who are just waiting for the right talent to come along. a All work matters, but not all work matters to you or to me. In today's episode, host Travis Shelton discusses work from the perspective of meaning. If 70% of Americans dislike or hate their jobs, there has to be a better solution. Instead of viewing some work as inherently good (pay, status, etc.), we need to ask if that particular work is good for us. When we better understand what work best fits each of us, we can begin to pursue work that truly matters.
