Rupture without Repair, and the Discomfort of Being Misunderstood In this deeply personal episode, Patricia (she/her) unpacks the fallout from a neighborhood rupture and the painful loss of community connection. Do you find it difficult to share your faith? Amber sits down with Pastor Jonathan Hein for a timely and honest conversation about why sharing our faith feels harder than ever—and why it still matters more than you realize. They unpack the growing skepticism around church, the impact of spiritual hurt, and what it actually looks like to bring Jesus into everyday relationships. Through personal stories and practical insight, Amber and Pastor Hein highlight the quiet power of small, intentional moments that reflect Christ. This is the last of the conversations Amber had at the Christian Leadership Experience in La Crosse, Wisconsin, earlier this summer. The conference was a chance for those in ministry to learn from leaders. Pastor Jonathan Hein led a workshop titled, "Leading Others to Jesus."

What is the center of Paul's theology? Traditionally, Protestants taught that justification by faith was the center. More recently, scholars proposed reconciliation, union with Christ, and transformation as the center. In The Affections of Christ Jesus, Nijay K. Gupta proposes love as the center. “The language of love in one form or another occurs over one hundred times in the Pauline corpus,” he writes. “Furthermore, every single letter contains love language — that cannot be said for other contenders for the so-called center of Paul's thought.” In this episode of the Influence Podcast, I talk to Gupta about what love is and why it may be “the bull's-eye center” of Pauline theology. I'm George P. Wood, executive editor of Influence magazine and your host. Nijay K. Gupta is Julius R. Mantey Professor of New Testament at Northern Seminary. He is editor of Dictionary of Paul and His Letters (2nd ed.), The State of Pauline Theology, and most recently, The Affections of Christ Jesus: Love at the Heart of Paul's Theology, published by Eerdmans. ————— This episode of the Influence podcast is brought to you by My Healthy Church, distributors of Open When . . . In this episode Erin Fairchild shares her love for documenting everyday moments through her journaling practice. Erin has found that having the intention of capturing everyday moments in your journal helps be more present in those moments so easily overlooked and creates beautiful time capsules of all aspects of one's life. This becomes a practice of deep gratitude. This chat is beautiful!
Have you ever noticed how easy it is to slip into negative thought patterns, even when you're actively working to maintain a positive mindset? That automatic default mode seems hardwired into our human experience, especially during stressful times. In this heartfelt exploration, I share my morning journal practice and the profound impact of developing what I call "the poet's eye" – a way of seeing that finds beauty and meaning in ordinary moments. This isn't about ignoring life's challenges or pretending everything is perfect. Rather, it's about training ourselves to notice the sacred in the everyday, to appreciate the small miracles unfolding around us, and to actively author our own life stories instead of passively accepting whatever narrative unfolds.I share an original, unpublished poem straight from my journal – a raw, unpolished offering about finding appreciation when "the world is affixed in gritty grays." The poem emerged organically during my morning reflection, a gentle reminder that creativity often arrives when we create space for it. Through this personal sharing, we explore how qualities like authenticity, self-empathy, and peace can become intentional anchors during challenging weeks.Perhaps most importantly, we redefine what peace actually means. Rather than waiting for external circumstances to become peaceful (which rarely happens!), we discover how to cultivate inner stillness regardless of outer chaos. Peace becomes not a destination but a practice – finding harmony within the disharmony, stillness within movement, and grace within imperfection. Join me in this intimate conversation about becoming relentless beauty-seekers and compassionate storytellers of our own lives. This summer, we're taking a short break from our regular podcast format, and instead have selected various installments from past message series given by James Emery White at Mecklenburg Community Church where he serves as the Senior Pastor. In a world where streaming media often dominates cultural conversation, certain shows stand out - not only for their entertainment value but also for the deeper messages they convey. In Meck's series "Streaming Now," we explored four of the most popular streaming shows sparking widespread cultural and spiritual conversations: "Severance," "Adolescence," "The Devil in the Family: The Fall of Ruby Franke," and "The White Lotus." We've already discussed one of these shows on an earlier episode of the Church & Culture Podcast - CCP144: On “Severance." Today, we're going to show the message on "Adolescence" to discover the message it contains, the lessons that can be learned, and the ways the Bible and Christian faith might engage and respond to them. Episode Links Below you'll find the link to the full series if that's something you are interested in checking out, along with the sources that were used in the development of the message itself: “Streaming Now” Olga Khazan, “What Jonathan Haidt Thought When He Watched Adolescence,” The Atlantic, April 15, 2025, read online. Dr. James Dobson, Preparing for Adolescence. Ken Gire, The Reflective Life: Becoming More Spiritually Sensitive to the Everyday Moments of Life. Dolores Curran, Traits of a Healthy Family. We'd also encourage you to check out other parenting and family series given by Dr. White at Mecklenburg Community Church. You can find them under the “Marriage and Family” category of resources HERE. For those of you who are new to Church & Culture, we'd love to invite you to subscribe (for free of course) to the twice-weekly Church & Culture blog and check out the Daily Headline News - a collection of headlines from around the globe each weekday. What If This Was the Last Time? Have you ever stopped to think, What if this was the last time I got to do this? Not the first time. The last time. That thought has been hitting me hard lately—and I believe it's one of the most powerful mindset shifts you can make to live a deeper, richer life. Too often, we rush through our days on autopilot—scrolling, working, hustling—without realizing we're living what will one day be our “good old days.” We treat moments with our kids, our friends, and our loved ones like they'll happen forever… until one day, they don't. The last lunch with your grandmother. The last time your child asked you to tuck them in. The last baseball game you ever played. These moments come quietly, without warning, and once they're gone, they're gone forever. In this episode, I walk you through how to catch yourself in the act of being alive. I share personal stories—some beautiful, some heartbreaking—that have taught me the priceless value of truly being present. I'll show you how to recognize the sacred in the ordinary, to pause long enough to take it in, and to live each conversation, each hug, and each sunset like it might be the last one. Because the truth is, you don't always know when you're living the last time. But if you're paying attention, you can live every moment as if it's something beautiful. By the end of our time together, you'll see that the depth of your life isn't found in the big, flashy milestones—it's found in the small, fleeting moments you choose to fully experience. My hope is that this conversation will inspire you to hug longer, listen deeper, laugh louder, and remember that right now is a moment worth keeping forever. Key Takeaways: Why life's most sacred moments often feel ordinary when they're happening How to live with “the richness of the experience” instead of rushing to the next thing The mindset shift that turns everyday moments into treasures Real stories that will make you rethink how you treat time with loved ones Practical ways to start living like this could be the last time—without living in fear Because one day, it will be the last time. And when that day comes, I want you to know in your heart… you didn't miss it. Max out.
