Today we’re talking about politics, social media, and self-care. By the time this episode is released, we’ll know the results of the 2019 election, however we recorded it a few days before. I got the inspiration for this episode when I was recording last week’s episode. I was honestly feeling really overwhelmed about providing election commentary because I’ve felt pretty upset about many elements of this campaign. I also felt like spending time on Twitter was adding to the negativity I was feeling. We chat with Kayley Reed, a successful entrepreneur who started her journey as a mental health advocate and co-founder of Wear Your Label. Her journey has led her to a successful business built around influencer marketing. She also hosts a podcast called Self-care Sunday. I wanted to talk to Kayley about how we can practice self-care in a negative political social media environment -- especially people like me who rely on social media as a tool for business. We talk about setting boundaries on social media, the difference between personal and business use, where we both were when we found out Donald Trump was elected, the role social media now plays in politics, and last but not least, some tools we can use to have a better experience on social media, while still being an informed advocate for change.

In episode 8 we meet Kayley Reed – a former start-up founder turned self-care advocate and marketing influencer who shares her story of choosing her health over ‘hustle’. At the age of 20, Kayley co-founded Wear Your Label, a Canadian lifestyle brand that merged fashion & mental health awareness. By the age of 22, the brand was attracting media from across North America, but by the following year of non-stop “hustle”, the experienced left her completely burnt out. During this time, Kayley became a well-known face in mental health advocacy, but behind the scenes, she quietly struggled with her own mental health as the brand grew. In this episode we discuss: The origin story of Wear Your Label The moment Kayley realized it was time to leave the start-up world Experiencing burnout as a mental health advocate   Kayley’s process of discovering her identity outside of entrepreneurship and answering the question ‘Who am I?’ The motivation behind Kayley’s podcast Self-Care Sunday and how it’s different from her previous business ventures The importance of pleasure and joy in adulthood Reflection questions shared in this episode: What role, persona or title have you become known for but wish that you could let go? If you could wipe the slate clean, what do you really want folks to know about you? What do you wish you had more time for in your life? What activities bring you the most joy and how often do you make time for them?

What were you doing at 20? Probably loving life, going to school somewhere and possibly thinking about what you might do after graduation. For my next guest, some of this was definitely true. But she also faced another issue -  she was dealing with her own internal struggle; an eating disorder and she felt like she was all alone. But life can be funny sometimes. You can be put in a situation where you feel like there's no way out, and then you meet another soul who's going through something similar and offers a helping hand. That's exactly what happened when Kyle MacNevin and Kayley Reed met while volunteering at an event in support of mental health. Their friendship expanded into a business relationships after they created a clothing line called Wear Your Label to help end the stigma around mental health and three years later, a ton of hard work and dedication, the company is thriving with multiple partnerships, international press coverage and a slew of loyal supporters. We discuss all the ups and downs of falling into entrepreneurship, how she deals with her own mental health issues, the different organizations they are working with and why a clothing line seemed like a great way to get their messages out to the masses. And so much more. And most importantly, if you are dealing with a mental health issue, just know that you are not alone. Do not suffer in silence- be sure to reach out to someone if you need some help.
