Journey of the Self: Memoir of an Artist with Ruth Poniarski Ruth Poniarski set out to find the ideal friend and the perfect mate, but what she encountered were spells of paranoia, extreme anxiety, and hallucinations. Trying to navigate her cyclic malady, she undertook a rigorous architectural program in search of her passion. What she discovered on her journey is captured brilliantly in this unflinchingly honest memoir. Ruth Poniarski was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1956 and grew up in Glen Cove, Long Island, New York. She attended public schools and when she was seven years old her mother took her to a life drawing class where she depicted a sketch of a nude woman. From that moment onward Ruth became a keen observer of the physical world and was drawn to art and the build environment. Stress. Anxiety. Burnout. Many of us have been experiencing these - or worse - throughout the pandemic. In fact, it's been reported that the COVID-19 pandemic has spurred a parallel mental health pandemic, which could have consequences for years to come. During the mental health panel at BFM's Health & Living Live 2022, we discussed why mental health issues cannot be taken lightly, and what we can do - as a community and in the workplace - to better support people who are struggling. The speakers on the panel were Ellisha Othman, Clinical Psychologist & Managing Director, Thrive Well; Anita Abu Bakar, Founder and President, Mental Illness Awareness and Support Association (MIASA); and Deepa George, Managing Consultant, MYHRC Services. This is an edited replay of BFM's Health & Living Live 2022 by AIA Vitality.

Stigma. It can be the difference between getting well and avoiding the help you need, especially when we're talking about mental health. Even though the awareness of mental health needs are increasingly common, we still see people delay seeking treatment due to stigma: feelings of shame and disgrace that lead to concerns about being treated differently. In this episode, our LISTEN WELL host Dr. Mo Alsuwaidan is tackling stigma with renowned psychiatrist and president of the WPA, Dr. Afzal Javed, and Ms. Anita Abu Bakar, president of MIASA – the Mental Illness Awareness and Support Association in Malaysia. Who do we know maybe is suffering? Have we treated this like a flu? Is the causes, symptoms, and treatment even the same? Have we embrace those who are experiencing depression? Are we experiencing depressive state or an episode of depression? If so, have we embrace Self in the process? Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg received her B.A. from Cornell University, attended Harvard Law School, and, in 1959, went on to graduate top of her class at Columbia Law School. Despite these impressive accomplishments, she didn't receive a single job offer upon graduation. She persevered and eventually became the second woman to ever serve on the U.S. Supreme Court. We've come a long way since the days where, like Justice Ginsburg, women lawyers were offered lower salaries because their husbands had high paying jobs or when they wore loose clothing to hide their pregnancies for fear of losing their jobs. However, studies suggest that the progress has been rather slow. In today's episode, hosts Christine Bilbrey and Karla Eckardt speak with Anne Brafford to discuss what the studies are telling us about the current state of women in the law, how firms can successfully retain and engage female lawyers, and how doing so improves the profession for everyone. Anne Brafford is a former equity partner at Morgan, Lewis, & Bockius LLP and the founder of Aspire, an education and consulting firm for the legal profession. Anne is the Vice President of the Institute for Well-Being in Law, formerly known as the National Task Force on Lawyer Well-Being. She is the Chair and founder of IWIL's Well-Being Week in Law. She was the Editor-in-Chief and co-author of the 2017 report of the National Task Force on Lawyer Well-Being. Anne is a past Chair of the ABA Law Practice Division's Attorney Well-Being Committee. She created the ABA Well-Being Toolkit for Lawyers and Legal Employers and is the author of an ABA-published book titled Positive Professionals, which provides science-based guidance to law firm leaders for boosting work engagement for lawyers. Anne is nearing completion of her doctoral work in positive organizational psychology. Her research focuses on lawyer thriving, positive leadership, workplace well-being, work engagement, motivation, mental health, inclusion, and the retention and advancement of women lawyers. In the first five months of the year, 468 suicide cases were reported across the country, compared to 631 cases reported in the whole of 2020. Nearly 1 in 5 adults in the US has some form of mental illness and there is still much stigma surrounding the topic, both publicly and internally. Admitting to yourself or others that you have a mental illness can be a major battle, so while it is still mental illness awareness month, Joe Cucchiara welcomes in his daughter Rachel Cucchiara to openly discuss her struggles with major depressive and anxiety disorder since she was diagnosed as a teenager. There is no one treatment that flawlessly works for everyone and the process of trial and error can be more than discouraging at times, but it should never be a reason for someone to not seek the help they need. Learn to recognize the signs and symptoms of mental illness in yourself or others by clicking HERE and contact a medical professional immediately.

Hello and thanks for joining us on this episode!Today’s podcast is an important discussion on the importance of mental illness awareness.Mental illness is a condition that affects most people at some point in our lives. Unfortunately it’s also a topic that often gets overlooked, ignored or mis-diagnosed.Depression is one of the most common forms of mental illness and if not taken care of either in the form of therapy, medication or reaching out, it can lead to more long term issues affecting not just the mind but the body as well.In This Podcast You Will Learn:1). Why it’s so important to dedicate a week or a month to mental illness awareness and how this affects so many people every year.2). Some of the reasons why mental illness has a bad stigma attached to it and why it is so easily mis-understood when it comes to be taken seriously.3). How mental illness affects more seniors than we might have missed and how it can easily be overlooked within this generation.4). The correlation between mental illness and how that also affects the body physically.5). Why it’s hard to realize that you may be suffering from depression or mental illness and why self diagnosing the issue can be easily unrecognized.6). How and where you can go to get help if you or someone you know is currently suffering from a form of mental illness.///Getting help if you have feelings of depression or isolation should be the number one priority if you feel this way or know of someone who does. The link mentioned in this episode that you can go to and call the friendship hotline can be found here by the Institute On Aging. It’s so important to make it a priority to get help especially in these challenging times. Mental illness can lead to much more if not diagnosed correctly and taken care of.Stay safe, happy and health always!Team Meredith

In this week's episode, I talk about how difficult it can be managing relationships when you have a psychotic mental illness, like schizoaffective disorder. In this episode, I talk about how harmful it is to use medical terms like "psychotic" and "delusional", as insults, and just how this contributes to the stigma those of us with psychotic mental illness face. I also talk a little bit about media representation of psychotic mental illness, and will be discussing that in more depth at a later date.
In this episode, I talk about the stigma around "appearing well", and stereotypes relating to mental illness, particularly psychotic conditions.

"Over 75% have developed mental illness by the age of 18" by Bobby Temps #88A face to face conversation with one of today's, local mental health advocates who is making huge positive changes in the space. Delighted to welcome Bobby Temps, the host of the Podcast entitled: Mental - The Podcast to Destigmatise Mental Health on to Find Your Voice where I got to know the man himself. Always intrigued as to why people do what they do, I wanted to understand why Bobby does the work he does, for mental health and also to understand where these motivators came from. This was an insightful and thought-provoking interview where we delved into many areas. We discussed the pressures society can place upon us. The pressures our parents can have on our own mental illness. Anxiety, Depression, Loneliness, Burnout and even body dysmorphia. All these can sometimes be very taboo like and we often navigate around them, rather than discussing them But keen to not just be another Mental Health hashtag episode we promised ourselves and each other we would be 100% open and transparent.Realising that we can all internalise things with a different perspective it is always a goal of mine personally to bring on as many people as possible even within the same bracket of adversity that they often highlight shaped their lives. This will in my hope, help you as listeners gain a different method, or perspective of coping and managing your own life. The beautiful thing with this interview, and something I learned midway through it was that a petition has now been signed with over 196,000 signatures, as I write this to help Some Key Time stamps:[04:45] Destigmatise Mental Health / Mental illness[08:40] Family pressures - Bobby[15:50] Family pressures - Aren[23:40] The statistics around Mental illness[30:30] Positive affirmations around Body Dysmorphia [39:15] Mental illness & Trauma you have experienced[45:00] Fun part of the showI urge you all to follow his journey:Free Audible book sign up: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Audible-Membership/dp/B00OPA2XFG?actionCode=AMN30DFT1Bk06604291990WX&tag=are86-21 Carol Dweck Mindset https://amzn.to/2QajMvZAmazon 5 Minute journal: https://amzn.to/31IJlGDSupport the podcast: https://www.patreon.com/findyourvoiceLinks to me:Website: https://www.arendeu.comInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/aren.deu/Twitter: https://twitter.com/arendeuFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/aren.singhLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/aren-deu-65443a4b/Podcast: https://www.findyourvoicepodcast.comYouTube: http://tiny.cc/51lx6yLinks to Bobby:Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/bobbytemps/Website: https://www.mentalpodcast.co.uk/Twitter: https://twitter.com/mental_podcastInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/mentalpodcast/?hl=enPodcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/mental-the-podcast-to-destigmatise-mental-health/id1358920477Some Mental recommendations:SamaritansSomeone to talk to who really listens with someone always there to pick up the phone. Plus the Department of Education, Ofsted and the Welsh Assembly are already working to make these changes a reality. When working to reduce stigma, I am continually concerned how a lack of education around mental health is contributing factor. This is something regularly raised as a mutual concern by guests on my mental health podcast plus several of them are actively working to fill this need by doing talks and workshops in schools. With one in four of us experiencing mental illness every year according to the charity Mind, this seems to be a real and very significant gap in our education system. KEY STATISTICS:- One in ten children aged between 5 and 16 years has been diagnosed with/shows signs of a mental health problem, and many continue to have these problems into adulthood. (1)- Over half of all mental ill health starts before the age of 14 years, and 75% of this has developed by the age of 18. (2)- NHS England estimates that poor mental health costs the NHS and society £105 billion a year in England alone. (3)The statistics are shocking, yet whilst there is a whole subject in the curriculum around our physical health in the form of PE, our young people are left without any knowledge of even the most common mental illnesses. Not only does this leave them unprepared and vulnerable when it comes to looking out for their own mental health, but also sets the standard that Mental Health is not discussed. This plants a seed of stigma that many carry for their whole lives.Upon further research, there generally seems very little in the way of guidelines currently. For example, if Romeo and Juliet is studied as part of the curriculum when the two title characters kill themselves, this is considered the end of the story or worse romanticised as an ideal form of love. The very serious topic of suicide is frequently not even mentioned as part of schooling, and yet according to the BBC, suicide is the biggest killer of men under the age of 49.It’s time to make a change. Even if a law was passed so every child receives one class about mental health during their time at school, this would be more than the vast majority currently get. We are keen to hear back from those in power on a more extensive plan to better the lives of our nation’s young people.CAMPAIGNING FOR:- Mental Health education becoming mandatory teaching for all schools in the UK without the addition of any exams or homework on this subject.- Every child having the ability to access a qualified counsellor through their school. This is something that many workplaces already offer.- Every school offering Mental Health training for its staff. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
My customer marg and I talking about mental illness and trying to bring awareness to it because we both suffer with mental illnesses
***TRIGGER WARNING***This is a heavier episode and graphic details of suicide are shared. If you are suffering or recovering from a mood or mental disorder and/or suicide ideation, please listen with caution or choose to not listen at all. The last thing I would want is for hearing these things discussed in this episode to set you back in your healing journey or to trigger negative thoughts and feelings. Also, if you are a bit more sensitive or an empath, you also may want to listen with caution. This episode also contains explicit language. //Anna and Sarah speak about the loss of their brother to suicide and the trauma they experienced afterwards. Through the vulnerability and rawness of their story, they empower and educate others on this sensitive topic. We discuss the grieving and healing process, advocating for mental health, and options to help those struggling. Anna and Sarah hosted a Run for Mental Health event to raise awareness about the affects of suicide and mental illness education. The host, Whytli Rogers, attended the event with her foundation, End The Stigma, hosting a booth and speaker where she was able to connect with the sisters. She was deeply impacted by their story and wanted to bring their voices to her platform.
