If you manage to come up and make a mark on the Detroit scene, you are clearly doing something right. And that’s just how Derek Plaslaiko started: spinning his clinical yet sophisticated sets at various key raves around the Mid West of America before eventually establishing himself on the global underground circuit. Now, although Berlin based, you may caught his name on the flyer for the No Way Back parties (put on by Interdimensional Transmissions - the Detroit imprint that has put out several of Plaslaiko’s rare original releases) and is a resident for Bunker NYC and has been for years. He also releases his stylish brand of techno on the club’s in house label and has close ties with Ghostly International. Add to this the fact he played a sublime closing set at our festival back in August, and Derek is a natural choice to mix it up for our podcast series. The resulting two and a half hour selection is an exquisitely programmed ride through many shades of techno, from stripped back and thumping to eerie and heady via raw and nasty. Just when the pressure seems like it might get too much, Plaslaiko masterfully switches up the mood and takes you somewhere else, thus keeping you locked to his grooves. He says of the mix, “it was done in one take at the Resident Advisor offices in Berlin. The neighbours complained about the volume near the end of the recording, so I was forced to do the last few mixes headphones only. It's made up of about 60% current favourite tracks, and 40% unreleased material from a handful of friends. Kris Wadsworth, Jared Wilson, Todd Osborn, Dona, DVS1, Mr Statik, Secret Studio and Israel Vines all submitted tracks specifically for this mix. Will Lynch, Jim Beam and a massive amount of Burger King all played a major role in getting it done. I like a good story when hearing a DJ set, so that's what I was going for when programming the mix.
INTERVIEW > http://inverted-audio.com/mix/kris-wadsworth/ Detroit-via-Berlin techno operator @kris-wadsworth serves up a deep and moody one-hour-long cocktail of helicoid grooves for warehouse-scale dancefloors.
Kris Wadsworth is a name synonymous with original sounding techno, in both meanings of the word. Growing up and absorbing the electronic music culture in Detroit set Kris on a path that would lead him to becoming one of the Techno Titans of our generation, a stature consolidated by his recent signing to Jimmy Edgar's Ultramajic label. Kris is strictly a vinyl only DJ because, as he says in his interview with Bomphcast (below), he sees “vinyl as the cornerstone of [techno] music's identity”. We at Bomphcast couldn't agree more. Vinyl DJ's will by default consistently bring a party with deeper dimensions, as the skill involved in mixing records commemorates the DJ's appreciation for the music and therefore the appreciation of a heaving crowd. His sets are no different. After last year’s monumental breakthrough ‚New York, Baby‘ EP on Get Physical, Bryan Kessler returns to mix the tenth volume of the ‘Essentials’ compilation. Bryan Kessler has no problem digging deeper into the Get Physical catalog, pulling out gems like DJ T.’s ‘Gorilla Hug’ from his 2009 album ‘The Inner Jukebox’. Bryan takes us even further back to the very beginning with one of Get Physical’s very first releases, M.A.N.D.Y.’s 2003 track ‘Tonite’. Throughout the entire compilation you’ll find quite a diverse selection of tracks, from Nôze’s ‘Dance Avec Moi’ to Kris Wadsworth’s ‘Life and Death’ (from his debut album of the same name dropped in 2013). Kris actually makes a couple appearances on here, with ‘Girl Talk’ (Also form the album ‘Life and Death’) as well as his very first Get Physical Appearance ‘Det Sound (KW’s Move Dat Ass Remix)’. Kessler even borrows from sister-label Kindisch for the compilation, utilizing ‘Lunchbox’ from Delete A.K.A. Sergio Munoz.

This summer-fresh installment of the Avenue Red Podcast series comes from London-based DJ, producer and label-owner Ben Parkinson, AKA Ben Boe to those in the Knoe! His Boe Recordings label has gathered some seriously high-grade moss since it's inception back in 2008 with a juggernaught discography of releases from heavy-hitters and underground talents including Burnski; KiNK; Leif; Iron Curtis; Kris Wadsworth and Nick Lawson to select a few. There is a new release coming from Anaxander on 11th August on limited 12" vinyl called Travelogues EP, which also features a remix from Ben himself. We advise keeping a diary entry for that! Last year Ben also opened a secondary tube line with a sub-label called For Those That Knoe - in Ben's own words... "For Those That Knoe is a House and Techno label from the UK focusing on under the radar tracks recorded by unsung heroes, ripped from dusty DATs and lovingly re-mastered and pressed onto vinyl for like-minded people and music collectors alike". Just the kind of project that Avenue Red has got full support for. You can catch Ben playing at the intimate and rather intriguing Field Maneuvers festival at the end of August that is held "in a beautiful riverside location 60 minutes outside of London" (unspecified). But as a precursor to that, dive into this mix from the man himself. An all-vinyl mix that is a diverse and nutritious stew of house, techno and electro that will leave even the most hungry and connoisseur-like music heads out there feeling fulfilled and coming back for seconds and thirds, no doubt! Enjoy the mix people, we certainly did. @boerecordings ===== No tracklist was provided for this mix, but do feel free to ask for track ID's in the comments.
With a career spanning well over a decade, Glimpse' unique sound has shown both his versatility and creativity as a producer. His London roots shine through in his music, constantly pushing boundaries and exploring new ground, with his imaginative blend of house and techno winning support from the likes of Carl Craig, Richie Hawtin and Damian Lazarus. With releases on labels such as Crosstown Rebels, Aus Music, Leftroom, Planet E and his own imprint, Glimspe Recordings, he has consistently shown his ability as a forward-thinking producer. Recent work has seen him branch out musically as one half of popular Hotflush duo, Dense & Pika, with numerous shows worldwide and a RA podcast already under their belt. We sat down with Glimpse after his recent set here at Egg London. This set was recorded live at Egg London when you recently played here, how was it? How did you find our bespoke Flipside system? The Flipside Sound system is absolutely incredible and easily one of the best sounds systems in London. It was really great to play on. You've been producing for over a decade now. Who would you say inspired your unique sound? You go through ups and downs as a producer. Times when it feels easy and times when you feel like you don't know what your doing. My inspiration usually comes from the people around me and the music im listening to at the time. You have a love for analogue equipment in the studio and the Jupiter and 909 sounds are present on a lot of your productions. Have you had a play with the new Roland digital series yet? The TB-3 and TR-8 units are causing quite a stir at the moment with people digging the additional live / jamming capabilities. I haven't had a chance to play on the new Roland kit but am interested to have a go for sure. You've released on some heavyweight labels including Aus Music, Hypercolour, Planet E and more. How did the opportunity on Carl Craig's Planet E come about? A friend of mine Dean Mushin sent him one of my demos and he signed it. So you're one half of Dense & Pika. How did this project come about and how do you differentiate this sound to your solo work? Me and Alex have been writing music of and on for 10 years now and it seemed like a logical step for both of us as our musical interests are very much aligned. Your own imprint Glimpse Recordings is coming up to it's 10th Anniversary. What was your thinking behind starting the label? Was it used as an output for material that other labels weren't signing at the time? I've never liked sending my music to other labels maybe scared of rejection. This way I could release my music exactly how and when I wanted. We did the same with dense & pika at the beginning. Just put out a series of 12s and waited to see how they went. This way there is no hype and no bullshit. If the music isn't good enough it won't work. But if it does you know you have something solid and no one can control that apart from you. Have you got any release news, both personally and for the label? Release wise I have a Glimpse EP coming out on Aus in a April, a dense & pike EP out in March on Hotflush and a dense & pika remix of Paul Woolfords 'Erotic Discourse' out in March as well. And finally, anything you'd like to shout about? Kris Wadsworth & Luke Viberts albums on Hypercolour are ridiculously good and worth buying on vinyl.
