This is the first episode in a new mini series on the rich and fascinating maritime history of Malta. The episode is recorded on a yacht in the centre of Valletta's historic Grand Harbour, at the opening of the Rolex Middle Sea Race, one of the world's most famous yacht races. Dr Sam Willis uncovers the history of the race and its magnificent historic surroundings with Liam Gauci from Heritage Malta, which safeguards Malta's many museums, historic sites and landmarks. They discuss the economic and strategic importance of the Grand Harbour, the fortified cities of Valletta and Birgu, and the mighty Fort St Elmo and Fort St Angelo. They explore the role of the Knights of St. John in shaping Malta's history. As the race gets underway with cannon fire from the historic battlements and the magnificent yachts sail past, they discuss the Rolex Middle Sea Race, which began in the 1960s in a fierce rivalry between British and Maltese sailors. It was designed as a major test of seamanship, the race starting and finishing in Valletta after a circumnavigation of Sicily, and all in the unstable weather of the Mediterranean Autumn.

A revenge record from the pop star Lily Allen has led to a storm of negative headlines for its alleged inspiration – her estranged husband, David Harbour. It's unfortunate timing for the Stranger Things star – with the final season of the Netflix hit dropping at the end of November. As if that wasn't enough, there have also been allegations of workplace bullying on the set of the show that made him a superstar. What does all this mean for Harbour? And will it affect the finale of one of Netflix's biggest blockbusters? Niall is joined by Sky's entertainment editor Claire Gregory and Emily Bootle, Culture Commissioning Editor at The i Paper. Producer: Natalie Ktena Editor: Mike Bovill
David Harbour and Millie Bobby Brown turned heads at the “Stranger Things” final season premiere in Los Angeles, appearing together despite reports that Millie had filed a bullying complaint against Harbour — but the two smiled through the tension, leaving fans guessing about the truth behind the drama. In a follow-up, Millie brushed off feud rumors, calling her bond with Harbour “special,” while the show's director Shawn Levy dismissed reports of on-set conflict as “wildly inaccurate.” Meanwhile, former NFL star Antonio Brown was extradited to the U.S. and charged with attempted second-degree murder after allegedly trying to shoot an influencer at a Florida boxing event, the latest in a string of headline-grabbing controversies. Katy Perry seemingly opened up about her split from Orlando Bloom in her new song “Bandaids,” revealing raw lyrics about emotional exhaustion, regret, and a tender nod to their daughter, Daisy. And finally, Blake Lively is suing Justin Baldoni for $161 million, accusing him of launching a smear campaign after she reported sexual harassment on their film set — a high-stakes Hollywood legal battle set to play out in 2026. Lily Allen's viral new album, West End Girl, digs deep. It catalogs the unraveling of her marriage and the deeper pain that lives between the lines of her lyrical prose. This isn't tabloid fodder—it's what Pitchfork called her most “brutally candid” work, a rare space where a woman can hold an abuser, a system, and her own art in the same frame. While Allen insists the record is “fictionalized,” it's unmistakably laced with real life—even with the unavoidable layer of my own parasocial projection. The title track name-drops the couple's designer—“Found ourselves a good mortgage / Billy Cotton got sorted”—a pointed nod to their now-infamous Architectural Digest home tour, which, in hindsight, aged about as gracefully as Harbour's opening “bit,” greeting the camera crew like a mistress at the door. (Iconic, for all the wrong reasons…and very worth the watch. Psst. All relevant links are down at the bottom!)With almost no pre-launch marketing, the album shot up the charts, hailed by Variety, The New Yorker, and countless fans as her best work yet. (Personally, I've been devoted since her early-2000s protest anthem “Fuck You,” written about George W. Bush.) Still, West End Girl took over my social feed overnight. Yours too, maybe? This is because it touches something deeper than celebrity gossip or divorce voyeurism. Those of us who have spent years minimizing our needs, over-explaining our emotions in an attempt to have them recognized, or trying to contort ourselves into palatable versions of dominant cultural scripts feel a shock of recognition in every song. Allen articulates the quiet grief of being gas-lit into gratitude for crumbs.West End Girl isn't just about Lily Allen and David Harbour—it's about the way patriarchy teaches women to negotiate with our own erasure to serve the agenda of systems of oppression. She's writing from the same ache that so many of us have been metabolizing privately for generations: the manipulation, the gaslighting, the subtle minimizations that we stomach under the guise of love in an attempt to find it/have it/keep it.And that's exactly what the cultural moment is naming out loud. As Vogue recently asked in its viral essay, “Is It Embarrassing to Have Boyfriends Now?”, there's a growing recognition that heterosexual love has long demanded women trade dignity for proximity. Asa Serasin even coined a word for this in 2019—heterofatalism, or the idea that heterosexual relationships are doomed to fail, because women are too often expected to shrink our brilliance, temper our boundaries, and laugh off harm to keep men comfortable.Enter Left Standing: The PodcastI actually recorded the first episode of my new podcast, Left Standing, before West End Girl dropped—but they're part of the same conversation, and I knew I had to discuss them as such. The show is about the reclamation of our narratives: the language, myths, and cultural scripts that have been rewritten and manipulated to serve the false ideals of systems of oppression. In episode one we will trace the etymology of words like gossip (originally meaning “god-sib,” a woman who stands by you in difficult times), and hysteria (from hystera, the womb). We will also discuss the way in which patriarchy rewrites myth, starting with my favorite goddess, the true, often-erased story of Medusa—a survivor punished for being violated. The first episode unpacks these histories and the lineage of tone-policing that still shapes how we hear women like Lily Allen: as “dramatic,” “unladylike,” or “sharing too much.” In it, I quote Melissa' Febos' book Body Work: The Radical Power of Personal Narrative. She writes:Listen to me: It is not gauche to write about trauma. It is subversive. The stigma of victimhood is a timeworn tool of oppressive powers to gaslight the people they subjugate into believing that by naming their disempowerment they are being dramatic, whining, attention-grabbing, or else beating a dead horse. By convincing us to police our own and one another's stories, they have enlisted us in the project of our own continued disempowerment.Because when survivors tell the truth, someone will call it embarrassing, dramatic, attention-grabbing, unnecessary, not lady-like, or a lie.And every time we tell it anyway, we reclaims our power—and gives others permission to do the same.As this is our first episode, your shares, comments, likes and subscribes mean OH SO much to me!Details and resources below!Thank you Jacquline Burtney for designing this! From today, Wellington City Council will start to remove the temporary fencing around the waterfront. The fencing was put up in 2023, after a death in the harbour.. that was the seventh drowning since 2006. A coroner's report in March called for urgent action in high risk areas of the waterfront .. but in August, Wellington council voted against a proposal to put up permanent fences.

W Misji specjalnej odkrywamy kulisy operacji o kryptonimie "Vengeance" ("Zemsta").

Episode: Making Our First Sea Film (and Surviving It) — with filmmaker Zoe East What it's about: behind the scenes of our mini-documentary about Ash, a female fisherman. Two women, one working boat, the hottest day of the year, and a very real lesson in saying yes before you're “ready.”You'll hear about:The films Michelle & Zoe have already made together (rowers, stonemasons, adventurers) and why this one felt different. How the Ash film finally happened after five years of red tape.Filming on a live working boat: zero seating, tight wheelhouse, fuel fumes, safety zones, and why some shots were “off the cuff.”Sea-sickness roulette: ginger shots, mindset, the wheelhouse of doom, who threw up (and who didn't), and how to keep shooting when your horizon won't sit still. The drone saga: trees, no-fly zones, ND filter chaos, and missing “the one job” harbour shot. What actually gets kept vs thrown back (and why fishermen get an unfair rap).Doing the dares: banding lobsters and mackerel fishing while trying not to die.The long steam home, the graveyard camper stopover, and the infamous Co-op pants. What's next: festivals, sponsors, and building She Who Dares Wins Productions — films about women, by women.Key takeaways:You don't need perfect conditions to make a great film — you need respect, adaptability, and momentum.Boundaries keep you alive on a working boat; they also keep your story sharp.“Confidence” isn't the absence of nausea — it's doing the job while you feel it.Fishermen are far more regulated than most people think; sustainability was front and centre.Minimum crew, maximum story: say yes, keep it simple, solve one problem at a time.Gear & constraints (for the film nerds):Small crew, limited kit, prioritising safety & workflow over perfection. No flying at sea (signal risk), attempted harbour drone shot foiled by ND filter & timing.Interviews split: land day + light top-ups at sea.Timestamps (light, skimmable):0:00 — Why Zoe's back + our past films1:25 — The Ash idea: 5 years of “maybe” to “let's do it”2:53 — Planning vs reality: tourists, heat, off-the-cuff shooting4:08 — Ginger shots & mindset: the seasick strategy6:23 — Wheelhouse hell + safety on a working deck9:35 — Missing shots, saving the story12:01 — What gets thrown back: sustainability in action14:20 — The mackerel dare & keeping morale up18:30 — Harbour return, drone fail, tourist chaos21:10 — Camper van, graveyard, and the Co-op pants23:30 — What's next: festivals, sponsors, more women-led films Hosted on Acast. In 2018, Mark Ashley-Miller bought a boat. There's nothing unusual in that, but there is in what happened next: he decided to sail around the coasts of Britain and Ireland, visiting every single harbour in the British Isles. And unlike most people who have such pipe dreams, he actually did it.The journey is now over, and we're delighted that Mark joined James Fisher on the Country Life Podcast to talk about his five years at sea, the 9,000 nautical miles he's sailed, and the 300+ harbourmasters he visited in the course of his epic journey. As well as talking through the inspiration for his trip, Mark talks about his favourite places on the route, the most hospitable harbourmasters, those who were rather frostier... and the one who immediately threw Mark and his crew the keys 'to go exploring' the local area before cracking open the Irish whiskey for a night of revelry. He also talks through the day he had to be rescued by the RNLI, and the few harbours that he wasn't able to make it in to — and why.Mark has written a book about his experiences, which is available to order now with all proceeds going to The Seafarers' Charity. You can find out more about Mark and his journey at his website or see his Instagram page.
