Musician and artist Goya Gumbani joins Chrystal Genesis in New York's East Village ahead of his live show to talk sound, style, Miles Davis, and his new album, Warlord of the Weejuns. In this episode, the Brooklyn-born, South London-based artist reflects on the cultural influences behind his dreamy, laid-back record, where the storytelling of New York hip-hop meets London's jazz edge. Recorded just after soundcheck, their conversation glides through fashion, food trucks, friendship, and family, with Warlord of the Weejuns, out via Ghostly International, threaded throughout. The album features contributions from Fatima, Yaya Bey, Joe Armon-Jones, and more, and is a meditation on self-expression, Black cultural lineage, and the quiet power of doing things your way. Loraine James is one of the most forward-thinking artists in electronic music today. Her sound is instinctive, fluid, and deeply personal—whether she's crafting glitchy, jazz-infused beats, bending genre expectations on Hyperdub, or exploring mood and texture through her Whatever the Weather project. In this episode of Lost and Sound, Loraine talks about her approach to making music without rigid plans, letting emotion and instinct guide the process. She shares insights into the creative freedom that shapes her work, from improvisation to embracing imperfections in her own way. We also dive into the personal themes in her music, including the deeply moving 2003, a track that reflects on loss and memory. With a new Whatever The Weather album out now on Ghostly International, Loraine talks about the balance between control and spontaneity, how she navigates external expectations without compromising her sound, and why she's never been interested in fitting into any one scene. Thoughtful, open, and refreshingly down-to-earth, I feel we got a rare look into the mindset of an artist constantly pushing her own boundaries. If you're enjoying Lost and Sound, please do subscribe and leave a rating or review on Apple, Spotify, Amazon, or wherever you listen.

Tomorrow's exceptional episode features world-famous American electronic music producer and DJ, Matthew Dear. Born in Texas, Matthew moved to Detroit as he fell in love with the Techno scene. He is particularly known for his albums Leave Luck to Heaven, Black City, and Beams. He also performs under aliases such as Audion, False, and Jabberjaw, and has collaborated with artists like Simian Mobile Disco and Tegan and Sara. He was founding artist on the Ghostly International label. Matthew's most famous track is ‘Put Your Hands Up For Detroit', remixed many times, and his albums (including my favourite 'Black City' have always been in great demand, right up to the current day. Any person who has run a label for knocking on a quarter of a century is someone I want to talk to.Ghostly International was launched in 1999 by Sam Valenti with a single by fledgling producer Matthew Dear which would go on to be sampled on a global hit by Fedde Le Grand. You know the one. This episode is actually almost a sequel to episode 077 with Shawn Reynaldo. Of course we discuss Ghostly, and particularly the early period of the label, but I really want to pick Sam's brain on a few of the key issues which came out of that episode from a few weeks ago.So we discuss issues including the decline of local scenes, the value of gatekeepers, the comparative lack of anthems in contemporary music, as well as his substack project Herb Sundays. This was a good one, you're gonna enjoy it!If you're into what we're doing here on the pod then you can support the show on Patreon! There are two tiers - "Solidarity" for $4 a month, which features regular bonus podcasts and extra content. And "Musicality" which for a mere $10 a month gets you all the music we release on Hotflush and affiliate labels AND other music too, some of which never comes out anywhere else. Brijean - Take A Trip from the 2022 album Angelo on Ghostly International. Vocalist/percussionist Brijean Murphy and producer/multi-instrumentalist Doug Stuart have been making sweltering groovy soundscapes as Brijean since 2019 and recently followed up their 2021 full-length Feelings with the EP Angelo. Named after their 1981 Toyota Celica, Angelo was born out of a period of immense grief, in which the duo leaned heavily on each other and music as a way to cope. Our Song of the Day “Take a Trip” celebrates those moments of cruising windows-down, as well as the more psychedelic types of trips, in which the journey is through the mind. “Travel with me down, down, down /Hear the colors, taste the sounds /Through the window, out the door /Spaces in my mind I've never seen before,” coos Murphy. A meandering bassline leads the scorchingly sunny song while a bevy of sounds including hand-claps, cuíca hiccups, whip-cracks, even a horse neigh add color to the already-heated track. “This song is an inquiry into shifting perspectives—a way to deepen our lived experience by becoming aware of the unexplored facets of our own perception,” says the duo of “Take a Trip” which comes with a music video from Nathan Castiel inspired by Dreamcast-era video games that interplays lo-fi 3D animation with the warmth of 16mm film. Today Izzy is joined by Virginia-based indie folk songstress Kate Bollinger to talk about her latest EP, Look at it in the Light. Topics of discussion include Kate's upbringing in a musical family in the south, her expansive tapestry of influences, her latest music video inspired by the Monkees sitcom and "Help!" by the Beatles, and saying goodbye to Virginia. ✨ MORE ABOUT KATE BOLLINGER ✨Kate Bollinger is a Virginia-based singer-songwriter who also dabbles in poetry and filmmaking. Her jazz-tinged folk songs with haunting melodies and pensive lyrics hearken back to early childhood, growing up, and the loss of innocence, creating a framework onto which listeners can project their own experiences. The discography of Mux Mool may as well be a genre unto itself. Although something of an unsung hero, he's spent the last two decades formulating a sound that has influenced an entire generation of producers. Mux Mool's fusion between hip-hop and electronic music exhibits an elusive cohesion of concept. His discography as a whole is greater than the sum of its parts, championed by entities including Ghostly International, Pretty Lights Music and Adult Swim. Mux Mool is a living, breathing, eccentric artist stereotype. Born Brian Lindgren in St. Paul, Minnesota to a folk singer mother and painter father, he resonated with video game music more than anything he heard on the radio as a child. In high school he discovered electronic music acts like Chemical Brothers and Sasha & Digweed. In 1998, he started producing music but waited until 2006 to release his first track "Lost and Found" which was named one of iTunes 'Best Electronic Songs' of that year alongside Flying Lotus & Justice. It also gained enough traction on MySpace Music to prompt none other than Bassnectar to request the stems to one of his songs. More importantly, it landed him on the radar of Moodgadget A&R. In 2009 Mux Mool toured throughout the United States and in 2010 he released his first studio-length album, "Skulltaste" on Ghostly International. A song from the effort titled “Get Better John” remains his most successful track to date, garnering 2.5 million plays on Spotify. From 2010 to 2011 he added tour dates alongside Bassnectar, Break Science and Lotus to his résumé. He then followed up his first release with the album "Planet High School" in 2012 and "Appetite for Production" in 2014. More recently, Mux Mool has collaborated and performed with Derek Vincent Smith A.K.A. Pretty Lights. In addition, he and fellow producer Michael Menert went on to launch Super Best Records, signing acts including Krooked Drivers (now Maddy O'Neal) and Late Night Radio. Mux Mool's newest album Skulltaste II dropped on July 10th, 2020. Bryndon Cook is a star and a romantic. Yes I'm taking it from his music moniker Starchild & The New Romantic. A multidisciplinary artist, actor & music director. Composing & recording music as Starchild & The New Romantic. Previously creative work includes collaborations with Solange, Kelsey Lu and Blood Orange. Guggenheim Museum, Sydney Opera House & Hollywood Bowl. He has a live album performed at National Sawdust, I caught his set at Warm Up for the first time with the Poetic Trust homies backed him up. Blessed him with Dahsar gear and it was great to come run into him again. My previous studiomate Hassan Rahim blessed the art direction for the album cover for ‘Language' that released through one of my favorite labels, Ghostly International. Including his previous album before that, ‘Crucial.' VHS 1138 and his new record, ‘Forever' is off of Starchild's label, New Romantic World. I always label these lists and mixes as "Best Ambient," but with so much music released each year, coming up with a true best list is almost impossible. So this is really more of a list and mix of my favorite ambient albums of the year. Best of 2020 just sounds better. I don't about you but I bought a lot of ambient music this year thanks to Bandcamp Fridays. Through regular purchases and special deals, where one could get a whole discography for like $10, I think I bought about 250 ambient albums this year. Yikes! Then add in releases that labels and artists send my way and it amounts to one hell of a lot of music. Thanks goodness for all that music though. I've been stuck working from home for almost 10 months and would have lost my mind without music to get me through it. One of the treats that got me through the year was Whitelabrecs excellent Home Diaries series. It featured music recorded and released during quarantine. I couldn't pick just one release so I cheated and put the whole series in my top 15 list. It's hard to narrow down that much music into 30 or 40 favorites. I know I will miss things. But this list has a bunch of styles so it gives a nice representation of what I listened to this year. My favorite album this year was actually an easy choice, it's Mindful Movement by Clariloops. Clariloops is Australian clarinetist, Ruby Lulham. She experiments with looping and pedals to to produce beautiful music that takes my breathe away every time I hear it. The folks at The Slow Music Movement put it best when they said, "producing music with a purity & simplicity that is both charming & striking." Please go check it out. Here is the full list of my favorite ambient albums of 2020. I came up with a top 15 releases and then the next 30 favs are listed alphabetically.
