A b3b for the ages, straight from Detroit techno's Hall of Fame. "Let's just go through some shit, let's see what we got here." In that unmistakable drawl, Moodymann opens RA.1026—and from there, you know you're in good hands. Mike Banks, Carl Craig and Moodymann are artists of the utmost standing. As founders of Underground Resistance, Planet E and Mahogani Music respectively, their catalogues have shaped electronic music in profound ways, from Moodymann's 2004 LP Black Mahogani and Craig's era-defining remixes, to Banks's uncompromising output as Underground Resistance. But the records are only part of it. All three artists show you can build something lasting without corporate backing, that creative freedom is a discipline as much as a right. Through their work, house and techno became vehicles for resistance, identity and pride. Recorded live at Movement in Detroit, RA.1026 captures Banks on keys, Craig on the decks and Moodymann on the mic, weaving through Motor City staples, '80s classics and deep cuts, including "The Final Frontier" and "Knights Of The Jaguar." As Black History Month continues in the US, the mix feels especially momentous Coming in at just under two hours, it's about chemistry, shared history and timeless records. The mastermind behind Basic Channel, Hard Wax and Rhythm & Sound doesn't do mixes. For RA.1000, he made an exception. Trace Mark Ernestus's path, and you trace the evolution of electronic sound itself. The timeline of contemporary Berlin is unimaginable without him. At first, that meant Hard Wax, the crucial hub that shaped the early era of the city's techno revolution. Carl Craig once said it plainly: "Mark was ground zero." From there, Ernestus never stopped. There's the birth of dub techno and the near-flawless catalogue that followed through Basic Channel and Rhythm & Sound. There's his immersion in Senegalese mbalax with Ndagga Rhythm Force. Lately, that means Open Ground the Wuppertal bunker that's letting people hear music as never before. As part three of RA.1000, Ernestus has kindly supplied his first studio DJ mix. As you might expect, it's technically immaculate, but more than that, it feels like a substantial and generous conduit to one of the world's most vital genres. Amapiano remains underexplored in music media. Publications like our own are still learning to keep pace with the South African sound's global pull, animating millions across the globe. You'll hear the range and richness of the genre across the near two-hour mix, from the gothic, percussive stomp of Caltetonic's "Bambela" to the devotional glow of GemValleyMusiq's "Something Spiritual." Through all of this, Ernestus has remained understated. He lets the music speak for him, with a quiet honesty that lies in decades of opening doors—creating the conditions for new sounds and scenes to flourish and carry the culture forward. @opengroundclub @hardwax Find the tracklist and interview at ra.co/podcast/1011. (superfly.fm)

Movement, Detroit’s long-running techno music festival made its way back to the city last month. Dynamic sounds and energetic tempos could be felt miles away from Hart Plaza as massive crowds danced their way through Memorial Day Weekend. Headlining this year’s festival was Carl Craig, a Detroit music producer, DJ, and founder of the record label Planet E Communications. Last year, a documentary film that chronicles the artist's life, Desire: The Carl Craig Story, premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival. This year, the film was screened at a pre-party to the music festival, ringing in the vibrant celebration of techno. “Most people don’t get a chance to see their lives before their eyes until a near-death experience. So I’m totally happy to see these things. These friends, family members, everyone in front of my face,” said Craig. Episode 275 is an interview with Kittser about his electronic project New Jackson. It may have felt like a side project when it debuted with The Night Mail EP in 2011, but over the last 14 years, the New Jackson releases have been so consistent across a multitude of EPs on Permanent Vacation, Hivern, All City, Maeve and more, with last year's second album Oops!... Pop softened the lines into a more techno pop songwriting style.Ahead of the New Jackson live show in Dublin on Saturday March 28th with support from Rory Sweeney and The Outside, his forthcoming album project with Efa O'Neill, we talk that collaboration, his new release as MMOTTORR with TR One , what he's learned from 30 years of DJing, living in Kerry, Spotify and Bandcamp discourse, and bucking the zeitgeist trends in dance music in 2025.David also picks some key influential New Jackson tracks from Joy Orbison, Wham!, Pépé Bradock, Carl Craig and The Egyptian Lover.* Support Nialler9 on Patreon, get event discounts, playlists, ad-free episodes and join our Discord communityListen on Apple | Android | ACAST | Patreon | Pocketcasts | CastBox | Stitcher | Spotify | RSS Feed | Pod.Link Hosted on Acast. My guest on Line Noise this week is New York city mainstay Junior Sanchez, a man who really has done it all in dance music since he started DJing at the tender age of 11: he's remixed Madonna, formed house supergroup Da Mongoloids with Daft Punk, Basement Jaxx, Armand van Helden, DJ Sneak and more; and even worked with Katy Perry. His new record Art-O-Fact (Detroit Remix) arrives on Carl Craig's Planet E label on October 11 and we talked about that; about Detroit and Miami; about Da Mongoloids' album plans; his love of The Prodigy and even Tatu. It was a wonderful, far-reaching conversation (albeit with a slightly raspy sound) and I hope you enjoy it. Line Noise is brought to you by Cupra.

Now that the dust has settled after the end of the Premier League campaign, the boys thought it was time to take a look back at the season as a whole. That, of course, means a visit from the great Carl Craig. Have some!
In this week's episode, we have Jean-Cosme Delaloye, who shares his early days as a reporter and his transition into documentary filmmaking, having been inspired by the 2016 film ‘Tempestad' and most recently, Oscar-winning short doc ‘The Last Repair Shop'. He talks about how his experiences covering sad stories led him to find refuge in techno music, which inspired his latest film 'Desire: The Carl Craig Story', which is World Premiering on June 12th with the Tribeca Film Festival, at the Indeed Theater. Jean-Cosme breaks down his approach to storytelling, focusing on the emotional impact rather than just delivering information. He also highlights the importance of collaboration with his director of photography and editor, the role of the director in maintaining objectivity, how documentary filmmaking requires patience, generosity, and building trust with subjects, and how taking the time to listen and allowing the story to unfold naturally can lead to powerful moments.TakeawaysJean-Cosme's journey as a filmmaker started from his days as a reporter, covering sad stories that inspired him to find refuge in techno music. His latest film 'Desire' explores the emotional impact of Detroit techno music through the story of DJ Carl Craig.Jean-Cosme focuses on the emotional aspects of storytelling, aiming to make the audience feel the music rather than just delivering information. The structure of 'Desire' follows a pre-party, party, and after-party format, reflecting the ups and downs of Carl Craig's career.Collaboration with a director of photography and editor is crucial in shaping the film and creating a cohesive narrative. Good editing can transform a film and give it a different meaning and pacing.Directors should not be too precious and should be open to feedback and guidance from editors.Maintaining objectivity as a director and being able to separate oneself from the film is important.Premiering at film festivals can be a rewarding experience and a validation of one's work.Distribution can be challenging for independent filmmakers, but having experienced producers can be helpful.Documentary filmmaking requires patience, generosity, and building trust with subjects.Taking the time to listen and allowing the story to unfold naturally can lead to powerful moments in filmmaking. What Movies Are You Watching?Like, subscribe and follow us on our socials @pastpresentfeature

This is an excerpt from a patrons-only episode. To hear the whole thing and much more besides, visit Patreon.com/LoveMessagePod Earlier this month UNESCO added Berlin techno to its List of Intangible Cultural Heritage, a register to recoginize and safeguard important traditions, practices and expressions. This news was met with consternation from music fans over how this honour completely overlooked the birthplace of techno, Detroit. For this patrons-only episode, Jeremy and Tim react to the news by pulling out a dozen or so of their favourite Detroit techno cuts to discuss. We hear about the ‘Belville Three', post-Fordism, Alvin Tofler and the relationship between Chicago and Motor City. The guys dwell on the aesthetic of coldness and futurity that characterised much of the Detroit sound, folding in the Panthers, jazz and unidentified flying objects into records from Underground Resistance, Carl Craig, Drexciya and Theo Parish. Caterina Barbieri, Kali Malone, Moritz Von Oswald and Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe discuss the role limitations play in the creative process, and whether they can be a source for creativity, if working with limitations helps sharpen one's aesthetics and define one's unique artistic voice, and whether human imagination needs limits to become limitless.Caterina Barbieri is a composer and modular synth artist whose sound draws from electronic, experimental and dance music. Her work is informed by an education in classical guitar and electro-acoustic composition at the Conservatory of Bologna, as well as the Royal College of Music in Stockholm and its famed centre for sound art, Elektronmusikstudion. She has spent a decade since her debut release, Vertical, breaking the rigid structures of electronic music and exploring how sound can induce both metaphysical and psycho-physical responses. Her most recent project, Myuthafoo, further investigates her interest in time, space, memory and emotion, and the links between them.Kali Malone is a composer and organist based in Stockholm. Her compositions are rich with harmonic texture through synthetic and acoustic instrumentation. In 2016 she co-founded the record label and concert series XKatedral, together with Maria W Horn, in Stockholm. Over the last few years she has released the critically acclaimed albums The Sacrificial Code, Living Torch, and Does Spring Hide Its Joy featuring Stephen O'Malley & Lucy Railton.Moritz Von Oswald is a dub techno pioneer producer and percussionist hailing from Berlin. He is the co-founder of production duo and record label Basic Channel. Prior to becoming one of the leading figures in electronic music in the 1990s, he played in one of the last incarnations of Palais Schaumburg. In a career spanning more than 30 years, he has worked with many legendary artists including Juan Atkins, Thomas Fehlmann, Carl Craig and Tony Allen. Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe is a Brooklyn-based artist, curator, composer and multi-instrumentalist. In 1997, he joined the band 90 Day Men before releasing solo projects under the moniker Lichens from 2004. He has collaborated on projects or provided sound in a featured artist capacity for such films as End of Summer, Sicario, Arrival, Last and First Men with Johann Johannsson and It Comes at Night with Brian McOmber. More recently, Robert has scored Il colpo del cane for Fulvio Risuleo, Candyman for Nia DaCosta, The Color of Care for Yance Ford and Master for Mariama Diallo.

Our landmark 700th episode in partnership with Detroit's Blueprint presents the first in a new three-part series exploring the untold history of Detroit techno from the perspective of the women who built it. The history of Detroit techno is often recounted in waves. First there was the Belleville Three—Juan Atkins, Kevin Saunderson, Derrick May—closely followed by a second cohort of artists who further developed the sound in the '90s. Names like Carl Craig, Octave One, Robert Hood, Jeff Mills and Mike Banks are among those that have been codified in the official annals of techno history. But there's another, lesser known story that is seldom told about the women who grew the scene right alongside them. Equally esteemed artists like DJ Minx (the founder of Women On Wax Recordings), K-Hand, DJ Cent, Stacey Hotwaxx Hale and more ran labels, collectives and DJ nights that aren't bestowed with the same credit as those from their male counterparts, and have consequently been lost in the chronicles of time. For the 700th episode of the RA Exchange, we counter correct this gender inequity with the first episode of a three-part series hosted and produced by the all-female Detroit collective and party series Blueprint. Alanna Greenlee, Janisa Nelson and Crystal Mioner embark on interviews that illuminate an alternative history of Detroit techno that unfurled alongside these better-documented techno waves, tracing the birth of a woman-led community that put mutual support at its heart and fought to earn respect from their male peers and the scene at large. Listen to the episode in full. Detroit based multi Grammy nominated and two time Grammy winning mixer, producer, musician, and engineer Collin Dupuis has developed a sought after sound over the last fifteen years working with critically acclaimed artists and projects including Yves Tumor, Angel Olsen, Lana Del Rey, St. Vincent, Dr. John, The Black Keys, Ray LaMontange, Richard Swift, and many others. Beginning his career playing in bands, running a DIY recording studio in Michigan, and doing tech work around the Detroit area, he quickly found himself working at FBT (The Bass Brothers) studio as an assistant engineer. Working there, he cut his teeth working with artists and producers of the likes of Mr. Porter, Eminem, Pharoahe Monch, and many more. Working at FBT studios along with working in the tech shop at Vintage King Audio helped to develop a deep understanding of studio work both technically and sonically. This knowledge helped him make connections and bridge the gap into the rock and electronic worlds of the Detroit music scene. He soon got a call to set up a studio at Jack White's house and help out on the White Stripes' “Get Behind Me Satan.” Shortly after that, Collin was hired at Carl Craig's Planet-E records. He engineered for the next five years alongside Carl on remixes, production, live sound in Europe, mastering, and mixing. Collin next got the call from Dan Auerbach to help him get his Akron studio up and running. This led to a move to Nashville and many critically acclaimed albums working as the lead engineer at Auerbach's Easy Eye Sound. During his time at Easy Eye Sound he earned a Grammy win for engineering and mixing Dr. John's “Locked Down”. Along with a Grammy win for engineering Cage The Elephants “Tell Me I Pretty”. Currently, Collin is busy working and living in Detroit, MI. as a freelance musician, mixer and engineer, producing, recording, and mixing albums for artists including Yves Tumor, Angel Olsen, Lawrence Rothman, Special Interest, Boy and Bear, and many others. Along with playing in and co-creating with his band Zoos of Berlin. IN THIS EPISODE, YOU'LL LEARN ABOUT: Saying “yes” to every opportunity Being an entrepreneur vs. following a traditional engineer/assistant path Setting goals for your career Knowing when you are a good fit for a client The hierarchy of what matters during tracking Focusing on the feelings of the musicians vs. the sound of the record Getting the most out of untreated studio spaces Committing ideas for the sake of preserving your intentions Embracing bleed in your recordings How to fix bleed in your mixes Dialling in reverbs right from the beginning of a session How to eliminate “s” sounds from taking over your reverbs Notable gear mentioned in this episode: Audient EVO SP8: https://sweetwater.sjv.io/Or5L9Q SE Microphones: https://sweetwater.sjv.io/DK1Mbj To learn more about Collin Dupuis, visit: https://www.collindupuis.com/ For tips on how to improve your mixes, visit https://masteryourmix.com/ Looking for 1-on-1 feedback and training to help you create pro-quality mixes? We had the pleasure of interviewing Pocket over Zoom video! After much fanfare for his recent singles, the rising star of the electronic scene, Edinburgh-raised Pocket, recently released his debut Helix Records EP, ‘Love DIsc.'The EP features the single, “Evergreen (ft. kloe),” which is available to stream now. The track is built around a joyful and radiant house instrumental that balances perfectly with kloe's heartfelt lyrics and stunning vocal delivery.“‘Evergreen' was a song that I started with the idea that its simplicity is its strength. Lots of texture and all based around the piano part. KLOE and I had a chat about our lives and everything we were experiencing, and the song became a love letter to being with someone long distance. The unapologetic lyrics and feel is to me what makes it such a standout. In the climate of house music and dance music in the UK, it's very easy to hold yourself back from making something sweet and warm with the fear of not fitting the mold, and I'm happy with taking the chance to make that happen,” Pocket says.Diversity is the name of the game when it comes to Pocket's approach to music and the EP offers a kaleidoscope of ranges and styles. Emblematic of Pocket's fresh sound, “U (ft. BRONZE AVERY)” is the perfect combination of pop, house, and UK garage. Pocket's light and airy instrumental melds perfectly with BRONZE AVERY's powerful-yet-soothing vocals. Using curiously satisfying vocal chops, and minimal but intricate production, ‘Crying at Supermac's' shows off a sound reminiscent of classic Burial. Pocket's unique style pierces through the saturated scene, showcasing a unique and excitable new project for fans. It's been an incredible start to Pocket's career - he was named one of the top 25 artists to watch in 2022 by Mixmag (his song 'Heartbreak Engineering' was also named amongst ‘Best Tracks of the Year April 2022'); received playlist support from Flume, DJ Seinfeld, and Salute, released a remix for Charli XCX and performed alongside Porter Robinson and Fred Again and has been included in tastemaker playlists POLLEN and Altar. Pocket's recent release, ‘U (ft BRONZE AVERY), featured in Paper Magazine in addition to receiving support from a who's who of DJs including Armin Van Buuren, The Magician, Dillon Francis, Joris Voorn, Calvin Harris, MK, Icarus, Oliver Heldens, Martin Garrix, Kryder, Sam Divine, Don Diablo, Carl Craig, Gabriel & Dresden / Dave, and PS1, among others. We want to hear from you! Got to spend an electrifying afternoon with the Detroit legend himself at his exhibition at MOCA. What a journey! AXx “Detroit-based techno DJ and producer Carl Craig's immersive environment, Party/After-Party is a visceral sound and somatic experience that evolves with each new iteration. Drawing on Craig's 30-year career as an internationally touring DJ, Party/After-Party guides visitors sonically through a club night from the perspective of the DJ. Starting in those moments before the crowd arrives and the DJ spins alone, before reaching its crescendo with the party's pulsing apex, and finally slipping towards the melancholic embrace of the after-party, the work evokes the collective ecstasy and desolation found only on a club dance floor”@carlcraignet@moca Ep 84 // CARL CRAIG https://linktr.ee/areweonair https://areweonair.com/carl-craig https://www.instagram.com/areweonair/ https://www.instagram.com/armannafeei/
