Crooked Cats: The Truth Behind Beastly Encounters

In this episode of Stories from the Subverse, Nayanika Mathur, Professor of Anthropology and South Asian Studies at the University of Oxford, delves into the conflict between big cats and humans. Nayanika's book, Crooked Cats: Beastly Encounters in the Anthropocene (2021), was a key source of inspiration for Cataplisms, which examines the intersections of capitalism through a feline lens. In this piece, Nayanika focuses on the governance of nonhuman animals, their entanglements with humans, and what the consequences are.  Mathur talks about the two types of big cats—the seeda saada (straightforward) ones who are scared of humans and keep their distance, and the crooked cats – the adam khor (maneaters) who prey on people. The reasons why some cats become man-eaters, while others avoid humans,  are widely debated. Hypotheses include that the cats have come from elsewhere, due to hunting and poaching, or that they're children of other man-eaters. This uncertainty has consequences. For example, the tiger Ustad, who resided in Ranthambore, was moved out of the sprawling environment of the national park to be confined in a zoo on the suspicion of being a man-eater. This move stirred a national controversy, eliciting an emotional outpouring and contradictory viewpoints. Ustad's life may have been restricted without cause. How does one govern the unknown?  Given the precarious status of most big cat species, the fact that hunting crooked cats is the standard solution of the Indian state becomes even more fraught. Especially, as Mathur underlines, when it is difficult to identify which cat is the crooked one. Drastic measures are often taken posthumously to ostensibly abide with the laws of the land and justify a kill.  Mathur emphasises the need to think more deeply about our entanglements with the non-human, revise our laws and institutional practices, and give up our crooked ways.  This audio story is part of the Cataplisms project. You can learn more about it here.  This story was produced by Tushar Das. You can find him on Instagram and his work on the Brown Monkey Studio website.    About Nayanika Mathur Nayanika Mathur is Professor of Anthropology and South Asian Studies as well as Fellow of Wolfson College at the University of Oxford, UK. Educated at the Universities of Delhi and Cambridge she is an anthropologist with an interest in studying the state, ethnographic methods, nonhumans, and the climate crisis. At Oxford Nayanika is co-director of a research network ‘Climate Crisis Thinking in the Humanities and Social Sciences' which explores the ways through which climate change poses a profound challenge to how the academy – from forms of writing and modes of teaching to disciplinary divisions – operates. Nayanika is the author of two monographs – Paper Tiger: Law, Bureaucracy, and the Developmental State in Himalayan India (Cambridge University Press 2016) and Crooked Cats: Beastly Encounters in the Anthropocene (Chicago University Press, 2021). The first is centred upon the study of bureaucrats and the second on big cats, though they are often confused. In her argument on the governance of big cats this connection - between the paper tiger that is the Indian state and the crooked cats that are entangled with the planetary crisis – becomes, one hopes, clearer.

Free speech advocates says Tonkin + Taylor doesn't need to apologise for an employee allegedly heckling the Deputy Prime Minister. A man appearing to be wearing a company lanyard yelled and swore at Winston Peters after an announcement on rail funding at Wellington's train station. The engineering firm has since apologised and says it'll investigate. The Free Speech Union's Nick Hanne says there's a line between work and personal expression. "This is an issue that isn't actually directly related to the work that their employee does - and of course to what they do as a company - so it just seems like complete over-reach." A former Finance Minister says cutbacks to public spending need to be seen in context. Finance Minister Nicola Willis has confirmed a drastic cut to the operating allowance in next month's Budget, from $2.4 billion to $1.3 billion. There will be no new funding for most Government departments, with the focus being on priority areas and paying off debt. Steven Joyce told Mike Hosking there's still scope to reduce spending. He says Government spending has doubled in the past eight years while inflation has only gone up about 30% in the same time. Joyce is also saying there's growing public appetite for more public sector restraint. The Government's ruling out giving most departments any additional funding in the next Budget, but Joyce says reaching that target will depend a lot on the international economy. However, he told Hosking there are still lots of changes that can be made to bring down government spending. Joyce says making those changes requires a bit of work and requires ministers having a good political radar and knowing what can't be cut. China increased tariffs on U.S. goods from 84% to 125% as part of a trade dispute with the United States, raising total tariffs on Chinese imports to 145%. These changes will take effect on Saturday. China described U.S. actions as economic bullying and indicated plans for countermeasures, including filing a case with the World Trade Organization. The tariffs will impact key U.S. exports such as soybeans, aircraft parts, and pharmaceuticals. Recent actions also include suspending imports of sorghum and poultry from specific U.S. companies and tightening controls on rare earth minerals. Major U.S. imports from China include electronics, industrial equipment, and toys, with consumers anticipating price increases. The U.S. administration aims to promote the return of manufacturing jobs but acknowledges the challenge in achieving this goal.Learn more on this news visit us at: https://greyjournal.net/news/ Hosted on Acast. We're approaching the fifth anniversary of one of the most unique race days ever seen in Sydney. Drastic covid protocols saw only jockeys, trainers and a handful of stable staff in attendance to watch the running of the Derby, Doncaster, T.J Smith and Sires Produce Stakes on day 1 of The Championships.. The day belonged to that pizza eating, beer swilling, arrogant mare Nettoyer who came from near last to win the Doncaster for trainer Wendy Roche and jockey James Innes Jnr. Jimmy joins us on the podcast to reminisce about an experience he still describes as surreal. James talks about his recent move to Canberra and a whole new phase in his career. It's not the first time he's had a Canberra connection. He says the eerie emptiness of Randwick on Doncaster day 2020 didn't detract from the thrill of winning his first Gr 1. James credits a well known Sydney trainer for getting him the ride on Nettoyer. He confirms the many stories that were doing the rounds about the mare's vile temperament. The jockey says it took him forever to get her to the mile starting point. A friend who worked on the barriers saved the day. James takes us through the running of the 2020 Doncaster. He says the mare went from a bolter's chance at the 800m to a realistic chance on top of the rise. He says he tried hard to control his emotions on returning to scale, but lost it completely. The jockey relates a humorous story about father James and mother Julie who watched the race at home. James Jnr pays a heartfelt tribute to his dad who rode many winners before his retirement in 2007. He talks about several trainers who contributed to his education along the way. James reflects on a serious fall at Bathurst which put him out for an extended period. He says it took a long time to get over the accident. He regards a stint with Keith Dryden during his apprenticeship as a life changer.   James looks back on a bout of depression during his time with the Godolphin operation. He was on the brink of quitting the saddle when he received a timely phone call from Gerald Ryan. He acknowledges the best horses he got to ride for the Ryan stable. One of them remains his all time favourite. The jockey has vivid memories of a stakes win for Waterhouse/Bott at Rosehill. He was pleasantly surprised. James talks affectionately of his young sons Carter and Asher who live in Victoria with their mother Aimee. He says Canberra is the perfect base for his regular day trips to country venues.  Innes says he's not as light as he used to be, but lighter than many of his fellow jockeys. James acknowledges the talents of partner Teaghan Martin who's had her share of injury in recent times. It's an enjoyable chat with a personable young man who's very good at what he does.
