But few have nailed all three elements quite as well over the last three decades as this week's guest on the show.Blueprint is James Ruskin's label - an absolute foundation of UK techno, and techno generally it should be said, with seminal releases from the likes of DVS1, Mark Broom, Oliver Ho, Sigha, as well as the boss himself. It will soon be celebrating 30 years of releases, which is a pretty incredible achievement. As a producer he's released prolifically outside his own imprint, most notably via an association with Tresor that goes back to the 90s. And as a DJ he's been a key part of the UK scene and beyond for at least that long too.We discuss familiar themes such as the state of the scene today, the comparative challenges of releasing music over a thirty year period, the evolution of his approach to work in the studio, amongst a lot of other stuff besides. This is a great conversation with an absolute key man. Kostas aka AgainstMe is a Berlin-based Greek DJ, producer, and co-founder of SOCIETY 3000, as well as a core member of USM Recordings. His journey into electronic music began at just 17, when he started releasing music under a different alias, experimenting with a variety of electronic genres. However, it wasn't until his first rave and techno parties on his home island of Lesvos in 2017 that he found his true musical identity, and AgainstMe was born. The AgainstMe project draws inspiration from the struggle to align with one's inner voice, a journey Kostas deeply resonates with. Techno, with its hypnotic melodies, heavy drum patterns, and ritualistic energy, provided him with a revolutionary and unifying sound, something that stood in contrast to everything he had experienced before. Since then, his sound has evolved, and his releases have gained international recognition. Notable works include the EP Tension Seeker on Warok Records, the album Synopsis on Subsist Records, and UNCERTAIN on Immaterial.Archives. His music has received support from influential platforms such as 6AM, Hate, Monument, Electronic Groove, and Beater, as well as from respected artists like DVS1, Umwelt, Sev Dah, Rodhad, Kangding Ray, K-Hand, Mikael Delta, Richie Hawtin, and Marco Bailey. As a DJ, Kostas has performed at renowned venues and parties, including Tresor, RSO, Fuchs2, Qreclaim, Astron Bar, Six D.O.G.S, and SMUT Athens. His sets, much like his productions, are a hypnotic blend of driving rhythms and atmospheric depth, captivating audiences around the globe. Looking ahead, Kostas is preparing to release new material on prestigious labels like SOMA Records, 47, Tar Hallow, Malor Records, Renegade Methodz, and Evilgroove Records, ensuring that his future in the techno scene looks exceptionally bright. "All I want to do is express what I love." The beloved Berghain resident talks about learning from failure, putting in the time and how good sound systems have changed his life. Born and bred in Minneapolis, Zak Khutoretsky, AKA DVS1, has been throwing and playing raves for decades. Now 47, he's at the top of his game. As one of Berghain's most popular residents and a producer known for his deep and versatile sound, he's amassed thousands of followers around the world, releasing on Klockworks, Transmat and Ostgut Ton, in addition to his own label, HUSH. Not just an artist, Khutoretsky has garnered a reputation for speaking critically about the challenges facing the electronic music community, notably through his essay about the battle between art and entertainment, and more recently through the inauguration of his revenue sharing platform ASlice. The organisation was designed in 2020 as an antidote to the pay disparity between DJ earnings and producer earnings, and its basic conceit is that DJs submit playlists of their tracks and share small percentages of their gig fees to be redistributed among the artists whose tracks they've played. In this RA Exchange live from ADE, Khutoretsky talks with journalist Christine Kakaire about the platform and the impetus behind it, as well as his underlying tendency to be a "fixer," from the problems in his house to the issues he sees plaguing his community. This week's entry to the Local Selection Mix Series welcomes esteemed Subject resident Niall Cleary. The massively talented and ever-consistent DJ has put forward a sensational mix featuring 57 tracks with a host of Irish and international talent throughout. Niall has been a key cog in the Dublin techno machine since the early 2000s when nights like Electric City and venues such as Redbox and the old Tivoli Theatre were in their prime. A student of the fast, loop-driven techno from the late 90s, and early 2000s eras, his sets are high energy, full of fast transitions and expert blends. Since late 2009, Niall has been a resident DJ with the renowned Subject events, playing alongside some of the biggest names in house, techno, and electro, as well as appearances at clubs and festivals such as District 8, Index, Twisted Pepper, Life, and Electric Picnic. Niall also holds a residency on Dublin Digital Radio where he plays alongside Mutate Events who host a bi-monthly techno show on Thursday nights where they focus on showcasing emerging and already-established Irish artists. Having played alongside techno stalwarts Dave Clarke, Paula Temple, Surgeon, DJ Bone, Jeff Mills, DVS1, Juan Atkins, Karenn, and more, Niall's pedigree in providing a classy warm-up set is frankly second to none. Niall's skill behind a pair of turntables is not restricted to serving up the starters, as he's been frequently found dishing out peak-time tools at numerous Irish festivals including Life Festival, Electric Picnic, and more. Niall's entry to the Local Selection features a range of brilliant artists that include SHDW & Obscure Shape, Alarico, Truncate, Lars Huismann, Tommy Holohan, Doug Cooney, Aero, Mode_1, Slam, Casper Hastings, and more throughout and just coming in at just over 2 hours in length. Making for a thoroughly enjoyable techno workout. Sorted. A veritable powerhouse of the Croatian techno scene Insolate has been establishing a global presence as a DJ and producer for over 20 years delivering as both a label boss at Out Of Place and the creative force behind their electrifying TRAUM events. Hailing from Osijek, Croatia, on the wide Croatian East – a town that at first glance a heavy industrial atmosphere overshadows, she is making her first steps as a DJ back in 1997 before taking over European and worldwide clubs. Her list of clubs and partys she played is impressive and includes Berghain, Rex, Tresor, Under Club, Club d'Anvers, Unter, Exit Festival, Tomorrowland, ADE and Dimensions Festival. Amongst many European clubs she played numerous tours in Colombia and recently added USA, China and Argentina to the list. As a producer, she's had a string of releases on highly respected labels including DJ Deep's Deeply Rooted, Marcelus's Singular and Developer's Modularz - supported and played by some of techno's finest including Laurent Garnier, DVS1, Dax J and Ilario Alicante. Also she released the stellar Obscure Object Of Desire EP on JoeFarr's new User Experience imprint, EP for a Suara and beautiful EP for Proletarijat, label run by Sev Dah. She also contributed to Ben Sim's compilation Tribology among giants as Planetary Assault Systems, Oscar Mulero, Steffi etc. and also made super interesting collaboration with french producer Arnaud le Texier and released EP with him for Prodigal Son. In 2019. she announced her debut album. The album Order is Chaos was released as a double vinyl and contains 10 tracks with extremely interesting collaborations with MATRIXXMAN and singer SARA RENAR. DJ Mag (UK) described album as “exciting journey thru trans-dimensional vocals, acid drenched sequences and floor obligated bangers.” Insolate is also a major contributor to the Croatian techno scene, so much so that she was in Ibiza to receive the award for "Dance Nation of the Year" at the DJ Awards on behalf of her nation. Her and long-time partner in crime Volster also run the event series TRAUM in her native Osijek. TRAUM events have cemented their place in the clubbing calendar with quality artists like Paula Temple, Antigone, Cassegrain, Janice, Etapp Kyle and Milton Bradley, just to name a few. The success of the TRAUM nights caught the attention of Red Bull Music Academy and Dimensions – both of which they have hosted official events for. Insolate being an international messenger of techno was recognised by Ambassador award that gave her a title "Croatia's ambassador overseas" for 2017. The final part of putting Osijek on the techno map was taken in 2015 with the launch of the label Out Of Place which Insolate runs with Volster. The label was named in honour of the beautiful struggle of carving your own way into the scene from a place that's well off the grid from the traditional capitals of techno. Now five releases strong, the label has already had contributions from heavyweights like Milton Bradley, Developer, JoeFarr, Francois X, Janice and many more. As a DJ, Insolate is well known for her no-compromise, pure-bred techno sets. It's clear to anyone who's seen her perform that she's an artist with a lot of experience but also plenty of inspiration and ambition, and a deep knowledge of techno. She is simply a natural presence in a DJ booth. If you've seen her play, you will know exactly what this means.
Why should the DJs get all the money? And there is a lot of it. Over a billion dollars in fees paid to arguably the least popular members of the music industry every year, mostly for "adding value" to a live event by playing other peoples' music. This week's guest, DVS1, has led a team which seeks to address that financial imbalance by providing an elegant mechanism for DJs to give some of their astronomical remuneration back to the producers whose hard work they make a living free-riding on.It's called Aslice, and you should join it right NOW. Whether you're a DJ, wracked with the guilt of stiffing so many people for so long, or a producer, hoping to pick up some of that revenue that's yours by right. You might think the above is somewhat hyperbolic, but I can stand behind the broad thrust of it. This really is a serious imbalance in the market, and correcting it will do so much good on so many levels. Which is one of the topics of this week's conversation. In addition to that, we discuss my interlocutor's roots in the Minneapolis rave scene, building the ideal party, and the relationship between his DJing, producing, and promoting. There will be NO PODCAST NEXT WEEK, so check back in on Tuesday 17 Jan. If you're into what we're doing here on the pod then you can support the show on Patreon! Paula Koski specializes in the space between mental and fast-paced, groovy techno. The Finnish-born, Berlin-based DJ is in her element when performing energetic peak-time or closing sets, such as at Tresor, where she is a regular. Paula is inspired by the queer techno scene, where she finds expressive freedom as a part of the LGBTQIA+ community. Integrally connected to her audience, she brings her sets to life through the experiences of like-minded people—on dance floors and across cities that most need her representation. Paula's talent for telling stories through her sets stems from her background as a fashion journalist, during which she began her career as a DJ. It wasn't long until her potential was recognized, and she moved to Berlin to pursue her musical aspirations. For several years, Paula continued her work as a writer for the techno monolith Monument where she was also the head of premieres and resident. Now focusing on her own music, she works closely with On Board management who has seen her profile grow rapidly. With appearances at Berghain, RSO, Hall Tallinn, as well as other key clubs in Europe and beyond, watch for Paula as she unites dance floors alongside the likes of DVS1, Aurora Halal, Stef Mendesidis, and more. Perhaps best-loved for his dynamic take on techno in both his productions and his DJ sets — having been involved and around music for nearly 30 years, @DVS1 is an expert in his field, a true veteran of the scene whose roots extend beyond DJing into grassroots raves and event promotion in his native Minneapolis. These days, he continues to push his own limits, getting involved in and starting up projects that fuel his love of music, but also his love of the community he was raised in and helped build. His most recent venture, Aslice, is a software-based platform which proposes a fairer music ecoysystem for DJs and promoters is in its early days, but its concept is bringing up questions for both me and Zak. For episode 47, we're exploring the value of art, the definition of success, his own personal perceptions of his worth as an artist.

Our final premiere of the week comes from Minneapolis based techno producer Lonefront, who's supplied a deep and hypnotic techno cut, perfect for murky basement clubs. An artist out of Minneapolis by way of the Bay Area, Lonefront produces explorative techno cuts as well as his performances as a live modular act, appearing on bills alongside DVS1, Volvox and Planetary Assault Systems. Now, the Minnesotan producer brings his dynamic take on the genre to Kajunga Records with two tracks pressed on wax across ‘Additive Spectra / South Of Forever'. Lead track ‘Additive Spectra' is a loopy affair awash with alarming bleeps, moody low-ends and sharp percussion, before B2's ‘South Of Forever' provides a twisted, eerie soundscape as shadowy synths churn throughout this slice of modular grooves. ‘South Forever' is deep and grimy, reminiscent of the classic Klockworks releases and cathartic dances at Berghain. Trippy melodies play off misty atmospheres, causing chilling and fine-drawn tension. This is modern day minimalism at its finest. En: dj DVS1 roept collega-dj's op om 5% van hun gage af te staan aan de producers wiens muziek ze gebruiken.
The London-born, Berlin-based artist masterfully straddles a heady mix of house, techno, and disco that has seen him become a regular at legendary spots like Panorama Bar/Berghain and Concrete while his output sits in the boxes of DJs like Ryan Elliott, The Black Madonna, DVS1 and Gerd Janson. With a record store background, it's unsurprising that Parker's instinct to dig is paired with an unapologetically high standard when it comes to track selection. As a result, he's a DJ who draws on undiscovered classics as much as he does unreleased material during a typical set. “Recorded live and direct from my Kreuzberg living room” Artist: @spencerparker

TECH CLUBBERS PODCAST W/ GABRIELLA VERGILOV Gabriella Vergilov is a Bulgarian-born Copenhagen-based producer, DJ and Singer with an idiosyncratic take on electronic music, defined by an extraordinary energy on the stage, a signature finesse of productions and an obsessive passion for aesthetics. A force behind the decks with impeccable taste for driving, dynamic and deep techno to jacking house cuts, inspired by the old school league: Jeff Mills, Dvs1, Ben Sims, DJ Bone and Laurent Garnier, her style has been captivating audiences at clubs and festivals like Shelter Amsterdam, Arena Berlin, Boiler Room, Dimensions Festival Croatia, Ampere Antwerp, HOR Berlin and beyond. Classically trained as a pianist, former professional contemporary dancer and a singer, she also implements her own vocals in her deeply personal productions, as well as layering them for respected artists within the techno realm. Forthcoming releases include works on DVS1's Mistress Recordings and Ben Sim's Symbolism, remixes on Dustin Zahn's Enemy Records and Mike Derer's Northern Parallels. With track support by the likes of Dvs1, Ben Klock, Truncate, Ben Sims, Len Faki, Gerd Jansen and even fashion giant PRADA who featured her works in their social media campaigns, her talents are recognized by the best in the industry. After her sensationally strong second appearance for Boiler Room in june 2021 in her motherland Bulgaria, Gabriella definitely deserved herself to be called “Bulgarian star” like the Boiler Room team noted. This Slavic powerhouse is determined to prove the world why female artists from minority countries are to be taken serious.
