This episode is part 2 or a 4 part series covering EditCon 2020 that took place on Saturday February 1st, 2020 at the TIFF Bell Lightbox in Toronto. There's no formula to a festival hit, but the three editors behind the recent critically-lauded feature films Freaks, Mouthpiece, and Genesis will share how they did it. In this panel discussion Mathieu Bouchard-Malo, Lara Johnston and Sabrina Pitre talk about their process, career trajectories and what lies ahead.  This panel was moderated by Justin Lachance, CCE.

Joy Sounds: Music You Need To Know

Lara Johnston was born for this. Being raised in a musical family (her father is Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, Tom Johnston, founding member of the Doobie Brothers) one would think her powerhouse vocal style came entirely naturally. While there is no doubt it helped, Lara has never taken anything for granted and is one of the hardest working singers in the business. A devoted scholar of music, Lara is constantly learning and studying the great singers and songwriters always looking to understand more about the craft and to make it her own. Lara feels equally at home as the featured artist taking center stage or as a background vocalist for legendary artists such as Don Henley. During this episode, Lara performs three songs live from the Joy Sounds studio: “Superpower,” “Happy For You,” and “Spacey.” Follow Lara @larajohnston

Schmit of the Eagles, performing throughout the US, and recording new original music. In September of 2012, Lara was selected from over 7,500 competitors as the first Grand Prize Winner of the Unsigned Only Competition for her song, K.I.S.S. While pursuing her career as an artist, writing and co-writing songs with partners in LA, London, and Nashville, Lara has also studied her craft at USC’s Thornton School of Music, where she is currently a senior. Her debut album release is fast approaching. Until then, you can hear her music online. On this week’s episode of SMI Radio, I catch up with Unsigned Only’s Ben Short to gain more insight to how UO works, how it got started, and the unique opportunity that it offers unsigned, emerging artists. You will also hear some tracks from past UO winners, Lara Johnston and Laura Steel. UO is still accepting song entries. Contestants interested in submitting songs for the competition can do so here. Specific days and runtimes of this week’s episode are available by scrolling down… In the second half of the show, Tacoma native Vicci Martinez is back on SMI Radio. Vicci dials in from the road, as she makes her way back to to the Northwest to play several dates, which include a show in Bellingham on Thursday, May 14 and a special St. Patty’s Day show on Sunday, March 17 at her old stomping grounds, Jazzbones in Tacoma. Tickets for that show are available here. Vicci is also in town to make her first video, which will include several friends and associates as extras. She’ll drop some hints on the concept of the video. Her single, Come Along, which she recorded with Cee Lo Green, has gotten a second life, thanks to her constant touring and radio airplay. You can get it on iTunes, Amazon.com and Bandcamp. Although Vicci has been spending the last couple years in LA, based on our conversation, her heart still remains in the Northwest.
