What the Riff?!?
1974 - May: Billy Joel "Piano Man"

What the Riff?!?

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 30, 2024 47:31

When you think of rock music anchored by piano, there are only a few standouts.  But outside of Elton John, perhaps the best known rock pianist is New York's Billy Joel.  Born in the Bronx and growing up in Long Island, Joel got his start early (at age 4) with piano lessons and dropped out of high school to pursue music full time.  After joining a couple of short-lived bands, Joel started his solo career and released his debut album, "Cold Spring Harbor" in 1971.It was his second album which would be remembered as his true nationwide debut.  Piano Man was his first release from Columbia Records, and came out while Joel was still dealing with legal issues from his former label.  Many of the tracks exhibit a story telling approach common in the early 70's.  Although Joel was in his mid-20's when the album was released, it had a maturity about it that made it do well both on the pop and adult contemporary charts.  Despite this being his breakthrough album, Joel would struggle to find success in his follow-up albums.  He was in danger of being dropped by the record label when he hit it big once again in 1977 with "The Stranger."  From that time on, Billy Joel would be an A-list performer, capping off a long career with a decade-long residency at Madison Square Garden.Wayne takes us through this breakthrough album for this week's podcast. Piano ManThe title track was written while Billy Joel was working at The Executive Room piano bar in Los Angeles, and is loosely based on the patrons that came through the bar told from the perspective of the piano player.  It would become both his signature song and synonymous with Joel.  "Son, can you play me a memory...I'm not really sure how it goes, but it's sad, and it's sweet, and I knew it complete when I wore a younger man's clothes."You're My HomeThis song was the B-side of the "Piano Man" single, so it did get some air play.  The song has a country feel, and was written for Joel's first wife.  He could not afford to buy her anything while in California between record deals, and he wrote it as a Valentine's present.  The Ballad of Billy the KidIf the last song was country, this next song is the Western.  This is an epic that pays tribute to a fictionalized Billy the Kid, telling a story of an outlaw in the Wild West.  The last verse switches to modern times, with Billy Joel taking the place of Billy the Kid, looking forward to new exploits.  Captain JackAn early live radio performance of this song is what got the attention of Columbia Records in the first place.  Joel wrote the song when living in Oyster Bay, Long Island, in an apartment from which he could see drug deals going down.  "Captain Jack" is the local drug dealer, and the song reflects the sadness that comes from a life in the grip of heroin.   ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Gypsy Woman  by Bill Dean (from the motion picture "The Lords of Flatbush")This movie starred Henry Winkler and Sylvester Stallone before they became famous for playing The Fonz and Rocky respectively.  STAFF PICKS:For the Love of Money by the O'JaysBruce starts the staff picks with a well known funk tune that went to number 9 on the Billboard Singles chart.  This song takes its title from I Timothy 6:10, "For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in thier greediness, and pierced themselves through."  It also was Donald Trump's WWE entrance music.Benny and the Jets by Elton JohnLynch brings us another piano artist, singing about a fictional glam-rock band.  "Oh, but they're weird and they're wonderful.  Oh, Bennie, she's really keen.  She's got electric boots, a mohair suit, you know I read it in a magazine."  The lyrics are told from the perspective of a fan at a concert.Rikki Don't Lose that Number by Steely DanRob's staff pick is the lead track to Steely Dan's third album, "Pretzel Logic."  It is also their most commercially successful single, peaking at number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100.  The inspiration for this jazz-infused rock song was a New York writer and artist named Rikki Ducornet.  Future Eagles alum Timothy B. Schmit provides backing vocals.Bad Company by Bad CompanyWayne features a song that is from the self-titled album AND the self-titled group.  The inspiration for this song was a Clint Eastwood western, and it is both a lament and a celebration.  "Rebel souls, deserters we are called.  Chose a gun, and threw away the sun...". INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Tubular Bells by Mike OldfieldWe close out to a song that was both a hit at the time, and would be immortalized in the horror film "The Exorcist."  Thanks for listening to “What the Riff?!?” NOTE: To adjust the loudness of the music or voices, you may adjust the balance on your device. What the Riff?!?
1980 - February: Bob Seger & the Silver Bullet Band "Against the Wind"

What the Riff?!?

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 16, 2024 42:53

If you're looking for great Heartland Rock, a great choice would be the album Against the Wind.  Depending on how you count it, it could be considered Bob Seger's eleventh studio album, but it is the third album of the iteration known as Bob Seger & the Silver Bullet Band.  Seger is joined by Drew Abbott on guitar, Chris Campbell on bass, and David Teegarden on drums.  The band became the Silver Bullet Band a bit by accident.  They were arguing about what to call themselves, and the manager got tired of it.  When they got paid the manager wrote the name "Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band" on the paycheck and the name stuck.  Against the Wind was an immediate success.  It went to number 2 on the Billboard 200 charts in its third week, and it sat there for 5 weeks, kepts out of the top slot by Pink Floyd's monster hit album, "The Wall."  Finally, it topped "The Wall" to take the number 1 slot and remained there for six weeks, making it Bob Seger's most successful album in his career. There are a number of well known hits on this album, and an excellent collection of musicians as well.  In addition to the Silver Bullet Band, Seger makes use of session musicians out of Muscle Shoals Sound Studios, and is joined by backing vocals from members of the Eagles as well.Seger retired at the end of 2019, but he performed in 2023 at Patty Loveless's induction in to the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville, so we hold out hope that there will be some occasional performances still to come.Bruce presents this folksy heartland singer songwriter for this week's podcast.. Her StrutWhile not released as a single, this song received some airplau as the B-side to "The Horizontal Bop."  Seger has been criticized for his adolescent humor in this song, but he claims that the inspiration for it was feminist activist Jane Fonda and her appearance before the Campaign for Economic Democracies.Against the WindBob Seger has written a number of songs about looking back on life, and the title track is an example of this.  Seger was a cross country runner in high school, and he uses running as a metaphor for growing old.  This song went to number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100, and he is joined by his friend and Eagles alumnus Glenn Frey for backing vocals.Fire LakeThis track is about taking risks, risking love, and just heading off with a bunch of wild people.  Seger recorded this one at Muscle Shoals Sound Studios.  If the backing vocals sounds a lot like the Eagles, there is a reason for it - those backing vocalists are Glenn Frey, Don Henley, and Timothy B. Schmit.  You'll Accomp'ny MeThis ballad is a little more country, with lyrics that basically say, "look, you may be playing the field now, but we both know in the end we'll be together."  Little Feat co-founder Bill Payne joins Seger on this track to provide organ, synth, and piano parts.  It hit number 14 on the Billboard Hot 100. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Sleepless Nights by Gram Parsons (from the motion picture "Cruising")Al Pacino starred in this crime thriller about a serial killer targeting gay men.   STAFF PICKS:I Like to Rock by April WineWayne rocks out to start the staff picks with this Canadian band.  April Wine formed in 1969, and have released over 20 albums.  This song may be time stamped in the early 80's but it rocks out, and you can't beat lyrics like, "journey to the stars, Rock N Roll guitars!" Take the Long Way Home by SupertrampRob brings us one of the hits off Supertramp's multi-platinum album, "Breakfast in America."  The lyrics to this one depict a couple growing apart as the husband starts staying away from home due to feeling like he's being ignored.  It can also be a reflection of missed opportunities to live in alignment with your heart, and not being at peace with yourself.Rock With You by Michael JacksonLynch features a hit from MJ's disco album, "Off the Wall."  Original lyrics were a bit more suggestive, but these were toned down to fit Jackson's wholesome image at the time.  Rod Temperton wrote "Rock with You" as his first song for Jackson, setting the stage for more collaborations, including the iconic "Thriller." I Wanna Be Your Lover by PrinceBruce's staff pick is the lead single from Prince's self-titled second album, and his first major hit, reaching number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100 in January 1980.  Prince performs lead and backing vocals, and plays all instruments on this hit.  The end of the track includes an extended instrumental jam which is edited out for the single. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Give It All You Got by Chuck Mangioni Flugelhorn player Mangioni wrote this song for the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, New York.   Thanks for listening to “What the Riff?!?” NOTE: To adjust the loudness of the music or voices, you may adjust the balance on your device. We also discuss his current songwriting contest with Future Youth Records. They're seeking to help inspire young songwriters from 18-24 to "use their unique voice to inspire change. Jesse knows a thing or two about that, having been the voice for "Get Together," the inspiring and unifying hit he released in 1967 with the Youngbloods. Entries for "The Perfect Stranger" songwriting contest are being accepted through August 15. Good luck!Jesse also tells us about the early days of the No Nukes movement, which he co-founded, his struggles with Lyme Disease and his memoir that he recently completed.

Welcome to a Very Special Episode of the podcast celebrating the show's 3rd Anniversary! I started the podcast in March 2021 during the depths of the pandemic, when musicians like me couldn't play live. It was a bleak time for all of us. I needed to find a creative outlet and so I started this podcast. From the beginning it grew quickly and exponentially. It's been ranked for some time now in the Top 1% of all podcasts. I have listeners worldwide on every continent in 200 countries, and it has won several awards! My guests have included many of the world's most famous musicians and other creatives.Last year to celebrate the 2nd Anniversary I played excerpts from several guest interviews. But for this 3rd Anniversary show I wanted to do something different - and fun. So here's what I decided. After each interview I ask my guest to record a short promo for the podcast. I use these promos at the beginning of other guest interviews. Everyone does their promo a little differently in their own style. After all, they're artists! So I thought it would be fun to put together a montage of promos featuring a slew of my guests. The entire list is below.I want to thank my guests and my listeners for the success of the podcast. John Van der Kiste is on the podcast to talk about his brand new book Eagles: Every Album, Every Song. As part of Sonicbond Publishing's On Track series, this book covers the one of the best selling bands in music history.Between 1972 and 1979, the Eagles soared to the top of the charts four times. A total of five number one singles, 18 singles reaching the top 40. Their 1976 album Hotel California has gone on to sell 26 million copies while Their Greatest Hits (1971-1975) went on to become the highest selling album of the 20th century in the US with 26 million copies sold by 1999. In 2023, the number of copies sold is now up to 38 million. In 1994, the reunited Eagles released the live album Hell Freezes Over, which shot straight to #1 and has sold 9 million copies. Their 2007 seven-times platinum selling studio album Long Road Out of Eden would put the band back on the top of the charts once more thanks to five consecutive Top 40 singles on the adult contemporary charts. After the death of founding member Glenn Frey in 2016, the trio of Don Henley, Joe Walsh and Timothy B. Schmit recruited Glenn's son Deacon and Vince Gill and continued to perform the band's iconic songs covered in this book by Van der Kiste. He details every track on each studio and live album along with originals and cover versions recorded by the band but never officially released.Purchase a copy of Eagles: Every Album, Every Song in the US through Amazon HERE Purchase a copy of Eagles: Every Album, Every Song in the UK through Burning Shed HEREFollow John Van der Kiste on Facebook HEREListen to a playlist of the music discussed in this episode HERE Visit the Booked On Rock Website HERE https://www.bookedonrock.com Watch exclusive video segments from the Booked On Rock podcast HERE Follow The Booked On Rock with Eric Senich:FACEBOOK TWITTER INSTAGRAM TIKTOK Support Your Local Bookstore! Our heroes discuss the World Cup in a manner fitting for two 50-something Americanos. Once again, Brian proves that Craig no longer bears any resemblance to his younger self.  The boys discuss some hard hitting news, and it appears that rumors of the death of the ODP Challenger were greatly exaggerated.   Sure, you can check us out at the usual outposts such as Spotify and Apple Podcasts, but for those of you who need more visual stimulation, you can now check out the show on YouTube at YouTube.com/@olddogpack.  Wait a second.  This episode was crippled by some technical difficulties that gave us about 10 minutes of video footage. What the Riff?!?
1979 - August: The Eagles "The Long Run"

What the Riff?!?

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 3, 2022 40:46

The pressure on the Eagles to create an album to follow up their 1976 masterpiece "Hotel California" was intense, and it took 18 months and five different studios to produce The Long Run.  This was their sixth studio album, and their last album before thier 14-year hiatus.  It would mark the introduction of Timothy B. Schmit to the band, who took over bass and high vocal duties from the departing founder, Randy Meisner. The Long Run was originally intended to be a double album, but the band just didn't have enough songs in their creative arsenal for that.  In fact, the band was completely burned out after a long tour prior to entering the studio.  Don Henley, Glen Frey, and Don Felder were joined by Joe Walsh (who was added to the group on the "Hotel California" album) and Timothy B. Schmit.  Frey and Henley would contribute most of the songs, but Schmit and Walsh would contribute songs they had originated, and frequent collaborator J.D. Souther would add to the tracks.  Bob Segar would contribute as well. The album would be a hit, going 7x platinum, and would sport multiple number 1 singles, including the Grammy award winning "Heartache Tonight."  Nevertheless, they would receive disappointing critical reviews.  Perhaps this is not surprising given the comparisons to "Hotel California."  Friend of the show John Lynch joins us in Wayne's absence for this last-of-the millennium album from the Eagles. The Long RunThe title track is a Memphis blues-inspired tune.  The lyrics are a response to critics who considered the Eagles to be washed up, and unable to compete with the disco and punk sounds prevalent in the late 70's.  Henley and Frey answer, "who is gonna make it?  We'll find out in the long run."I Can't Tell You WhyThis is a song composed primarily by Timothy B. Schmit prior to joining the band, and was loosely based on his own experiences.  The rock ballad would be their third single released from the album.  Uncommonly for Eagles songs, Glen Frey plays lead on this song, and Don Felder is on the organ. In the CityJoe Walsh originally recorded this song for the soundtrack to the film "The Warriors," and it was re-recorded by the Eagles for this album. Though not released as a single, it got significant airplay on AOR stations at the time.  It has become a staple for band tours. The Sad CaféWhile not released as a single, this track would make it onto the Eagles Greatest Hits, volume II.  It was inspired by The Troubadour nightclub in Hollywood where the Eagles had previously played.  The song relays the tale of so many musicians who came through that nightclub, most of whom did not make it big.  David Sandborn provides the saxophone work on this song. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Theme from the television series “The Facts of Life”"The Facts of Life" started its run in this month, and was originally a spinoff from the series "Diff'rent Strokes." STAFF PICKS:Hot Summer Night by NightBruce's staff pick is from a short-lived band out of Los Angeles, and is a cover of a song originally performed by Walter Egan in 1978.  The lead vocalist for this song is Stevie Vann, who emigrated from Zambia with her then-husband Robert "Mutt" Lange.  The group also had a male lead in Chris Thompson, who would be recognizable as the lead vocalist for Manfred Mann's version of "Blinded By the Light."Rock Lobster  by The B-52'sPut on your nose guard!  Put on your life guard!  Rob brings us the B-52's signature song, and the one that truly launched their career.  It came off their second studio album, "Wild Planet."  Fred Schneider said the song was inspired by a club called "2001" in Atlanta, which showed slides of puppies, babies, and lobsters on a grill. All of My Love by Led ZeppelinJohn Lynch's staff pick was released in August as a single, and is a softer rock ballad from the late stages of the band.  The song was written in honor of Plant's son Karac, who died while Plant was on tour with the band in 1977.  John Paul Jones plays keyboards on this piece.I Can't Stand It No More by Peter FramptonBrian wraps up the staff picks with the first single from Frampton's album "Where I Should Be."  Peter Frampton had just starred in the remake of the movie "Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band," which was panned by critics and failed commercially.  He also had a bad auto accident in the Bahamas requiring months of therapy.  The song made it to number 14 on the pop charts.     INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Parisian Thoroughfare by SupersaxYou can't go wrong with a sax!  Jazz group Supersax closes out our podcast this week.

Escuchar audio

1977 - November: Steely Dan “Aja”

Quick!  Name a song by Steely Dan.  Chances are good that the song you picked is off this sixth studio album, the iconic Aja.  Steely Dan had already become a successful jazz rock group by this time, but Donald Fagen and Walter Becker created their most successful album by far with this one.By the time this album was produced, the group had been reduced to the duo who were responsible for the lion's share of the music.  Fagen and Becker assembled a large group of session musicians to make this album, including well known vocalists like Michael McDonald of the Doobie Brothers and Timothy B. Schmit of the Eagles.  Donald Fagen has said that the album name was inspired by a high school friend whose Korean wife’s name was Aja.   Many consider this album and Gaucho, the following Steely Dan studio album, to be two of the founding albums to a genre that would become known as yacht rock.  However, the heart of this music is undoubtedly jazz. Black CowThe album starts with this song which has been interpreted a lot of ways, from a commentary on a troubled relationship to self-doubt, to  a track inspired by Thelonious Monk.  The song describes a girl sitting at a counter, and a Black Cow is a fountain drink like a Coke float.Deacon BluesThe opening lines describing the "expanding man" may have been inspired from sci-fi author Alfred Brester's 1950's novel "The Demolished Man."  The song itself is about having a name for the nerds and the losers of the world, and compares football powerhouse Alabama and their name as "the Crimson Tide," to the proposed name for the loser.  Becker and Fagen considered this song somewhat autobiographical.PegThis track features backing vocals from Michael McDonald.  The song is about an actress in a photo shoot being promised fame.  While some speculated that the song referenced Broadway and Hollywood star Peg Entwistle, Donald Fagen stated that "we just wanted a dotted half note for that spot and Peg was short enough to fit with the music."  JosieThis song finishes off the album and is a bit more influenced by Delta blues than the more jazzy tracks on the album.  This may be because the song was written well before the rest of the recordings for Aja.  The song tells about a popular girl from a blue collar town, who always creates excitement when she returns to town.  Timothy B. Schmit plays bass and is on background vocals for this track. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:“The Lonely Man” - theme from the television series “The Incredible Hulk”Long before the MCU, we were introduced to David Banner in this weekly show, who struggled to escape the curse of turning into the Hulk when he became angry.  Bill Bixby played David Banner, and Lou Ferrigno became famous as the green-muscled Hulk. STAFF PICKS:“Free 'n' Easy” by Uriah HeepWayne's rocking staff pick highlights an underrated prog rock/heavy metal group.  This is not a single, but a deep cut off Uriah Heep's eleventh album.  “Baby What a Big Surprise” by ChicagoRob brings us this well known tune with Peter Cetera taking his turn as lead vocalist of Chicago.  Cetera was attempting to repeat the success of "If You Leave Me Now" with this song.  Interestingly, this song is the only one on the album Chicago XI to feature Cetera on lead vocals.  “I Know a Little” by Lynyrd SkynyrdBruce's staff pick was written by guitarist Steve Gaines, and features his talented picking.  This song is off the last Skynyrd album before the plane crash that killed several band members including front man Ronnie Van Zant and Steve Gaines.  Gaines had just joined the band, so this would be his first and last studio album as a member of Lynyrd Skynyrd.“Cold As Ice” by ForeignerBrian's pick is a great tragic song about a materialistic woman who will some day face the consequences of her selfish ways.  This is off Foreigner's debut and self-titled album.   INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:“The Entertainer” by Scott JoplinBilly Dee Williams starred in the biographical film "Scott Joplin," which was released in November 1977.

The Dirt And The Stars supone la primera colección de nuevas canciones desde que hace cuatro años publicó The Things That We Are Made Of. Escuchar audio

In 1977 Leonard Mogel began publishing a dark, illustrated, steampunk, and somewhat erotic science fiction and fantasy magazine called Heavy Metal, and in 1981 an adult animated sci-fi fantasy film by the same name was produced by Mogel and Ivan Reitman.  The film would become a mainstay of the midnight movie circuit (along with “the Rocky Horror Picture Show”) throughout the 1980's, and would also lead to a hit album which would peak at number 12 on the Billboard 200 chart. The movie mirrors a comic book, in that it strings together a number of shorter vignettes into an entire animated movie.  The shorts are loosely held together by the frame of the Loc Nar, an orb that is the ultimate evil.Filled with terrific rock tracks, the soundtrack would become mired with legal issues, causing the CD to not be released until 1995.  If you wanted to hear it before that, you needed to buy the LP.We're only giving you a taste of this album, folks.  You really should download and listen to it in its entirety.  Friend of the show Andy Burt stands in for Bruce in this one way ticket to midnight. Heavy Metal (Takin' a Ride) by Don FelderThis is the title track by once and future Eagles alumnus Don Felder.  Fellow Eagles alumni Don Henley and Timothy B. Schmit also contribute backing vocals. The track would be the only Felder solo effort to chart, appearing at number 43.  The music is associated with the film episode entitled B-17. Veteran of the Psychic Wars by Blue Oyster CultPenned by Eric Bloom and British author Michael Moorcock, this song appears in the story entitled Harry Canyon.  John Candy voices the Sergeant in this segment. The song itself reflects a futuristic soldier exhibiting PTSD.    Heavy Metal by Sammy Hagar“Headbangers in leather!”  This song was written for the movie.  “It's a one-way ticket to midnight!  Cal it - Heavy Metal.”  This iconic track is played in the segment called So Beautiful & So Dangerous. The Mob Rules by Black SabbathThe short entitled Taarna contains this track.  Ronnie James Dio is the front man for this iteration of Black Sabbath.  "If you listen to fools, the mob rules."  This is the concluding vignette from the film.“Reach  Out” by Cheap TrickWayne  doubles up with his out-of-order staff pick, from the Heavy Metal Soundtrack.  This track also takes place in the Taarna vignette. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK“Bad Moon Rising” by Credence Clearwater Revival"An American Werewolf in London" was on the big screen at this time, with some amazing special effects in this day.  CCR contributed this song as the theme of the film. STAFF PICKS:“Gemini Dream” by The Moody BluesBrian's staff pick comes from a synthesizer heavy hit from prog rock superstars The Moody Blues.  It hit number 12 on the charts, and comes from their album "Long Distance Voyager."   Justin Hayward and John Lodge co-wrote this song. “Really Wanna Know You” by Gary WrightRob brings us another synth-heavy hit from the artist best known for "Dreamweaver."  Wright worked closely with ex-Beatle George Harrison, and developed an affinity for eastern religion which permeates his music.“Hold on Tight” by E.L.O.Guest Andy finishes off our staff picks with this somewhat Rockabilly boogie number 2 charting track from the Electric Light Orchestra.  It is off their sci-fi themed album “Time.”  At the time, it was the most expensive video produced.  Interestingly, it only hit number 24 in France despite the fact that it has french lyrics in the song. COMEDY/INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:“Birdy Song” by The TweetsBruce gets blamed for this comedy song choice to finish off an otherwise awesome podcast.

In the latest edition of Uncommon Engineering, Coach Hawk turns to Jock Bartley, the lead guitarist for Firefall, a band best known for radio hits “You Are The Woman” and “Just Remember I Love You,” plus classic rock staples such as “Strange Way” and “Cinderella.” An alumnus of the University of Colorado, Bartley pursued his dreams of becoming a professional musician. He landed his first big break when he joined Gram Parsons & The Fallen Angels, then in 1974, he formed Firefall along with Rick Roberts, Mark Andes and Larry Burnett. In this episode, we hear the firsthand story of how that group went from its humble beginnings, to catching an opportunity to record its self-titled debut, to touring with the likes of Fleetwood Mac and Lynyrd Skynyrd. Bartley also discusses his growth as a writer and lyricist, dealing with success and failure, and becoming an artist (he designed the cover art for his solo album Blindside). Firefall has a new album called Nature’s Way, featuring Sacramento’s own Timothy B. Schmit (The Eagles), due this fall.

The fifth studio album by the Eagles would become their biggest commercial success (not counting Greatest Hits (1971-1975), another monster album in its own right). Hotel California has been certified 26x platinum, and virtually every track was played on rock stations, not just the singles "New Kid in Town", "Life in the Fast Lane" and the title track, "Hotel California."This album was recorded after Bernie Leadon had left the group. This multi-instrumental founder was a strong country influence, and when he was replaced by rocker Joe Walsh the group took on a stronger rock orientation. “Hotel California” is a bit of a concept album with the word “Hotel” signifying the daily experience of the band members, and the word “California” taking on a mythological symbolism for the state, the United States, and/or the West. The songs speak of loss of innocence, corruption, illusion versus reality, and of course strained and broken relationships.Friend of the show, Steve Hardin joins us in this week's episode. We hope you enjoy this look at one of the most storied albums of the 70's. Try and Love AgainBassist and high tenor Randy Meisner wrote and sings lead on this track about starting over after a broken relationship. "right or wrong, what's done is done, it's only moments that we borrow. But the thoughts will linger on of the lady and her song when the sun comes up tomorrow." Meisner would be replaced by Timothy B. Schmit after this album.Wasted TimeDon Henley takes on lead duties for this break-up song. Drummer Henley would take lead singer duties for about half the songs on the album. "So you can get on with your search, baby, and I can get on with mine. And maybe someday we will find that it wasn't really wasted time."New Kid in TownGlen Frey takes the lead on this song, which was the first single from the album. Don Henley has the main harmony vocals, and would attrribute the song to the fleeting nature of fame, especially in the music business. The Last ResortHenley wrote and sings this epic protest song about finding Paradise in California, and destroying it. The group would have to re-record it a number of times because the studio they were using in Miami was adjacent to a studio Black Sabbath was using to record Technical Ecstasy, and the sound kept bleeding through the walls. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:”Rocky (Gonna Fly Now)” from the motion picture "Rocky"Sylvester Stallone wrote and starred in the movie which would launch his career STAFF PICKS:“The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald” by Gordon LightfootRob's staff pick tells the story of a shipwreck in Lake Superior that occurred on November 10th 1975. Lightfoot was inspired by an article in Newsweek called "The Cruelest Month." The Edmund Fitzgerald was the largest ship on Lake Superior.“Fly Like an Eagle” by Steve Miller BandFriend of the show Steve Hardin brings us the intro and the song proper from Steve Miller Band. It rose to #2 on the charts, held back by Barbara Streisand's "Evergreen" from A Star Is Born. The band had been playing the song in concert since 1973, but it didn't make it to an album until now.“It's a Long Way There” by Little River BandWayne brings us the first hit in the United States by Australia's Little River Band. This would begin a string of hits from the band with a west coast feel and tight harmonies.“Beth” by KissBruce features an unusual ballad from the normally hard rocking Kiss. Ironically, this is the highest charting single by the group, hitting #7 on Billboard's Hot 100.LAUGH TRACK:"Disco Duck" by Rick DeesThis week's podcast finishes off on a fowl note.

When we did our Rock-and-Roll Christmas "rabbit hole" episode last year we realized that there are just too many Rocking Christmas songs to be held in a single podcast. So we're coming back to you this year with another selection of Christmas songs that rock!“God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen” by- Ronnie James Dio This selection from the former Rainbow and Black Sabbath front man puts a metal twist on a 16th century carol.“God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen” by The Barenaked Ladies A more mellow take on the same song features stripped down acoustics and harmonies. Sarah McLachlan is featured in this cover.“Happy Xmas (War Is Over)” by John Lennon Brian features the well-known original piece from John Lennon and Yoko Ono from 1971. They are joined by the Harlem Community Choir“Christmas” by The Who, from “Tommy”Rob brings us a deep cut from the rock opera Tommy. In this vignette, Tommy's father questions how Tommy can be saved given his inability to see, hear, or speak.“Do They Know It's Christmas?” by  Band Aid This 1984 compilation was created as a means of providing support to famine victims in Ethiopia. Bob Geldof and an all-star cast of singers was assembled including Sting, Bono, Bananarama, Boy George, and Simon Le Bon.“Stone Soul Christmas” by Binky Griptite Wayne puts the soul in Christmas with this 2011 effort. Binky Griptite is a DJ in New York and was the guitarist for the Dap-Kings.“Christmas Presents Blues” by Jimmy Reed Wayne keeps the funk going with this rousing bass line and double entendre laden tune from 1971.“I'm Your Santa” by Lil' Ed and the Imperials We drift into the blues with this New Orleans-style cut from Alligator Records.“Celebrate Me Home” by Kenny Loggins Bruce features one from Loggins' debut solo album in 1977. While this has now become a Christmas standard, it was not released as a single at the time, and was not intended to become a standard.“Baby It's Cold Outside” by Frank Loesser Brian's pick is the Dean Martin 1959 cover of this classic. Loesser originally wrote this as a housewarming song. When MGM bought the song, Frank's wife was furious that he had sold it.“All I Want for Christmas Is You”  by Mariah Carey Bruce took a little heat from the boys when he brings us this original piece from 1994 that has become a best-selling modern day Christmas song. Its Carey's biggest international hit, and the best selling Christmas single by a female artist overall.“Oh Tannenbaum” by Vince Guaraldi Christmas wouldn't be the same without “A Charlie Brown Christmas.” This piano jazz cover of the classic Christmas carol takes you to that show, and a rather dinky tree.“Come Home for Christmas” by the Eagles This 1978 cover is the first Eagles song to feature Timothy B. Schmit on bass after Randy Meisner left. The original version was released in 1960 by pianist Charles Brown.“Same Auld Lang Syne” by Dan FogelbergBrian features an autobiographical story from Fogelberg. This happened when he was returning home to Peoria when Jill went out for Egg Nog and Dan went out for whipping cream. Fogelberg did not reveal the name of he old flame, but she came forward after his death.LAUGH TRACK:“Walking Round in Women's Underwear” by Bob Rivers Wayne brings us into our "Laugh Track" part of the podcast with this comical take on Christmas and cross-dressing.“Hanukkah Song” by Adam SandlerWe finish off with this comical take on the Jewish holiday from Adam Sandler, where we find out that David Lee Roth, Henry Winkler, William Shattner, and Leonard Nimoy are all jewish. But OJ Simpson is NOT!

I'm standing on a corner in Winslow, Arizona". Frey añadió "It's a girl, my Lord, in a flatbed Ford".

Dan Fogelberg passed away 10 years ago this month.  His memory has been kept alive this year by a number of events, including the release of two new albums, ‘Live At Carnegie Hall’ (a previously unheard performance from 1979) and a tribute album that features a long list of musicians that loved Fogelberg’s music.   This episode of Documenting Popular Music takes a look at the tribute album and artist such as Garth Brooks, who performs “Phoenix” with Trisha Yearwood providing background vocals; the late Donna Summer, who sings an inspiring version of “Nether Lands” using the same backing track that Fogelberg used for the 1977 classic; Amy Grant and Vince Gill, who provide a duet on “Longer” that gives new life to Fogelberg’s biggest hit; Randy Owen, the legendary voice of the group Alabama – the best-selling country group of all time – sings “Sutter’s Mill,” originally from Fogelberg’s progressive bluegrass album ‘High Country Snows;’ Zac Brown and his band deliver a live version of “Leader of the Band;” and Fogelberg’s good friend Joe Walsh of the Eagles sings “Part of the Plan,” a song he originally produced for Fogelberg for the 1974 album Souvenirs. Fellow Eagles Don Henley and Timothy B. Schmit sing backing harmonies for the new version of the song.   Other artists on the album include Michael McDonald, Jimmy Buffett, Boz Scaggs, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band with Richie Furay, the late Dobie Gray, Train, Fool’s Gold (originally Fogelberg’s backing band) and Casey James.   Included in this presentation is inside, background information from Fogelberg’s former record producer, Norbert Putnam, one of the tribute album’s co-producers.  Putnam explains how Brooks and Summer got involved in the project, which is a true labor of love from Fogelberg’s widow, Jean Fogelberg, also a producer on the album.  She has worked hard to create a celebrated year for her late husband, and the tribute album is the final, very satisfying piece to an eventful year.   You can hear more from Putnam about his relationship with Dan Fogelberg in the Documenting Popular Music episode ‘Leader of the Band -- Remembering Dan Fogelberg with Stories and Insights from His Record Producer’ released earlier this year. Read the Show Notes at http://oandfstudios.com/documenting-popular-music/ --- Coming soon from Documenting Popular Music, a look at Gordon Lightfoot’s career with author Nicholas Jennings; a conversation with Merrilee Rush (“Angle of the Morning”), a look at TV theme songs from the 1970s that became Top 40 hits; and a biographical sketch of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s Class of 2018.

After more than 50 years in music, Rusty Young, the leader of the group Poco, has recorded his first solo album.  The new set is entitled ‘Waitin’ for the Sun,’ (Blue Élan Records) and it features 10 songs that not only give you a peek into Young’s life, but also into his emotions, as the “Crazy Love” singer/songwriter is unabashedly sentimental.   In an interview with veteran journalist Robert Neil, Young tells the stories behind the songs, and when he gets to the track “My Friend,” already rising in popularity, it becomes an historic, musical trip down memory lane about the musicians he’s known and the friendships that have endured.   While some artists promoting a new album might not want to talk about the past, Young embraces it and happily talks about former Poco bandmates Randy Meisner, Richie Furay, Jim Messina and Timothy B. Schmit, as well as others such as Gregg Allman (who once auditioned to be a member of Poco), Gram Parsons, JD Souther, Don Henley and Glenn Frey.   A few of the members of Poco – past and present – are featured on the new album.   ‘Waitin’ for the Sun’ also features songs about Young’s family, and in the interview he provides the backstories to songs about his daughter (“Sara’s Song”) and his grandparents (“Honey Bee”).   Young says life has been good to him, and the album is a reflection of his appreciation. Poco fans will easily be drawn to the album as will fans of the southern rock genre that emerged in the early 1970s.  The most satisfying news about the album may be that Young had such a good time making it, he’s interested in a follow up, and more stories from this natural storyteller would be welcome.

Poco was formed in August, 1968 by guitarists Richie Furay and Jim Messina, who had just left Buffalo Springfield. The pair enlisted the help of session man Rusty Young who had played steel guitar on some tracks recorded by their former band. Young introduced them to drummer George Grantham, while bassist Randy Meisner left his former group, The Poor, to round out the quintet. Among the others that auditioned but not chosen was Gregg Allman. Calling themselves Pogo, (with a "g") the band debuted a month later at the Fillmore West, opening for The Steve Miller Band and Sly And The Family Stone. After building up an local following, they were forced to change their moniker, which they had openly pilfered from Walt Kelly's comic strip of the same name, when Kelly filed suit. They settled on Poco because it sounded like the original name that fans had come to know. Several record companies had considered signing Poco, but Richie Furay's contract with Atlantic caused some problems. The band was eventually signed to Epic Records in 1969 after the label traded Graham Nash to Atlantic, where he would record with Crosby, Stills And Nash. The group was set to record their first album when Randy Meisner announced that he was leaving to join Rick Nelson's Stone Canyon Band. He would later become part of Linda Ronstadt's Stone Ponys and go on to help form The Eagles in 1971. Poco continued as a quartet and released their first album, "Pickin' Up the Pieces", which sold over 100,000 copies. Eventually, they hired bassist Timothy B. Schmit, who had originally auditioned for the band, but lost out to Meisner. The five members of Poco then recorded a self titled L.P. and a live album called "Deliverin'" before Jim Messina quit, saying he was tired of the hectic touring. He would later find success when he teamed up with Kenny Loggins to form one of the most popular duos of the seventies. Messina's replacement was guitarist Paul Cotton, who stayed for three modest selling albums. Frustrated by the band's failure to find a break out hit, Richie Furay also quit after 1973's "Crazy Eyes". After a failed super-group called Souther-Hillman-Furay, he would pursue an unrewarding solo career before turning his attention to religion. Although Furay's departure was a setback, Poco's next four albums through 1977, sold better than the previous efforts. In January, 1978, drummer George Grantham also left the band. With Rusty Young as the only original member, Poco released an album called "Legend" which climbed to the #14 spot on Billboard's Hot 200 album chart. The group now contained keyboard player Kim Bullard along with a pair of Englishmen, Steve Chapman and Charlie Harrison, who had played together for eight years with Leo Sayer and Al Stewart. This was the line-up that finally found commercial success in 1979 with "Crazy Love", which reached #17 and "Heart Of The Night", which made it to #20. Unfortunately, Poco quickly fell off the charts as fast as they had climbed it. Subsequent albums returned to the band's previous sales levels and the group began a slow decline until their break-up in 1984. In 1989 the original line-up of Poco, Furay, Messina, Young, Grantham and Meisner, re-formed, recording a highly successful album called "Legacy" which produced two Top Forty hits, "Call It Love" (#18) and "Nothin' To Hide" (#39). The group toured throughout 1990, but old tensions flared and Furay, by now a minister in Boulder, Colorado, left again. Fragments of Poco toured throughout the '90s with new members coming and going, but in early 2000, Paul Cotton, Rusty Young and George Grantham got back together again, along with Jack Sundrud. In the Spring of 2003, this new version of Poco released "Running Horse", their first new album in thirteen years, backed by a year's worth of tour dates. The album however failed to generate much interest and couldn't crack Billboard's Hot 200 LP chart. In July of 2004, Grantham suffered a stroke during a l...

AmericanaFest 2016 may be wrapping up, but more than ever, we took this year’s gathering as a battery-charger and an inspiring star map for what lies ahead. Hearing kind words about our new Roots Radio initiative on WMOT 89.5 FM certainly helped rev our enthusiasm from high to higher for the prospects of sharing and spreading the music and the stories of its makers. I had an interesting but sobering experience on the weekend teaching a seminar about the origins and legacy of Music City to a group of 50 adult learners enrolled at Bethel University. These were folks from outside our industry/music nerd circles, but I was surprised to survey them and learn that ZERO of them had heard of the concept of “Americana” music. Yet this is music for everyone. It’s our shared, connecting heritage in a divisive time, so I took this as a personal challenge. Due to the unique time crunch of AMA week, I offer my annual condensed survey of last week’s action and this week’s show, which looks just splendid with an MCR debut by Austin “Ameri-Chicana” fiddler/singer Carrie Rodriquez and a celebrated blues guitar slinger. But as I sit quietly thinking about these recent days, I’m swimming in the echoes of some absurdly excellent performances: William Bell singing “The Three of Me” at the Honors & Awards show with staggering grace and candor, Aaron Lee Tasjan’s psychedelic country glam and River Whyless (MCR alums) playing sparkling, surprise-filled alt-folk. And of course we threw a showcase on Thursday and couldn’t have been happier with our roster.

News, a Celebrity Interview with Charles Dye and we tweak The Stupid Knob! News: Digidesign Releases Pro Tools 7.3 LinPlug Releases Organ 3 Celemony Releases Melodyne Plugin Celebrity Interview: Charles DyeThis week we sat down for a conversation with Latin Grammy Award-winning engineer, mixer and producer Charles Dye, who began his engineering career in 1992. Since that time he has mixed hits for Ricky Martin, Sammy Hagar, Julio Iglesias, and Jon Bon Jovi, as well as recorded artists such as Aerosmith, Hanson, Jennifer Lopez, Shakira and Gloria Estefan, among many others. Since then, Charles has become a bit of a pioneer in the area of mixing records on Pro Tools, evidenced by his mix of Livin' La Vida Loca, as Dan Daley said in Mix Magazine, "a milestone of technology: the first Number One record to be done completely within a hard disk system. In addition to changing the course of mainstream pop music, 'La Vida' may also turn out to be a pivot point in how records are made." Charles's further commitment to Pro Tools and mixing on it was demonstrated by his two-time Grammy and Latin Grammy nominated engineering and mixing of five additional songs on Ricky Martin's album, including two additional singles Shake Your Bon Bon and Private Emotion. In 2001 he was awarded a Latin Grammy for Best Engineered Album for Thalia's Arrasando, and he worked with Pro Tools on that project as well. As a veteran Pro Tools user he has recorded, mixed and produced almost every record he's worked on in the last several years completely on the system, and though he may use an analog or digital large-format console from time to time, you'll always find his Pro Tools nearby for the sounds and techniques he's become known for. And most importantly, he's a good friend of PSN and all of our loyal listeners. Get Mix It Like A Record For Just $99!
