Since forming in 1889, Orange County, California has become famous all over the world for being home to such popular attractions as Disneyland, Knott's Berry Farm, and some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. But there are also many other places that helped establish the county as not just a popular tourist destination, but also home to countless cultural landmarks that served the local communities for generations. Stretching across the 34 cities that comprise "The OC," Lost Landmarks of Orange County brings back fabulous memories of music venues, restaurants, theaters, theme parks, attractions, and more. Everybody knows the aforementioned Disneyland and Knott's Berry Farm, but Orange County was also home to Lion Country Safari, the California Alligator Farm, the Buffalo Ranch, Japanese Village and Deer Park, Movieland Wax Museum, the Orange County International Raceway, and many other large-scale attractions. Concert venues including the Golden Bear, Irvine Meadows Amphitheatre, and the Cuckoo's Nest all featured some of the biggest names in rock and roll and popular music. Tiki bars, airports, drive-in movie theaters, themed restaurants . . . these were the places where generations of OC natives and visitors from around the world created memories that would last a lifetime. Today, all of these locations are gone, but utilizing firsthand accounts, rare photos, artifacts, and other resources, Lost Landmarks of Orange County keeps the colorful memories of Orange County's past alive. Now, in honor of the 20th anniversary of James Dean Died Here, Epting has produced It Happened Right Here: America's Pop Culture Landmarks, which collects the best of the best from all of Epting's prior books, and then adds dozens and dozens of new sites, many of them based on the pop culture of the 21st century. It Happened Right Here once again takes you on a journey across North America to the exact locations where the most significant events in American popular culture took place. Pat Simmons and Tom Johnston, the leaders of the Doobie Brothers, offer up a tag-team oral history with writer Chris Epting on the legendary rock band in "Long Train Runnin'." Their five decade journey, the longevity, success, drama and even the biker bars are all here. Chris joins us to recount their history, including the events that shelved Johnston and brought in Michael McDonald for The Doobies second wildly successful lineup. Chris has also worked with a number of musicians on their memoirs, including John Oates, Leif Garret, and members of Tesla and Def Leppard, as well as an upcoming book on and with Dave Mason. If that's not enough. Epting has also written several great reads on pop culture, and pop music culture. They are the road map to many a great road trip, particularly if you're curious where many a rocker were born, lived, slept and died, and just where Madonna's bra currently resides.

Allman Brothers leader Duane Allman was killed on October 29, 1971 when he lost control of his motorcycle and drove into the side of a flatbed truck in Macon, Georgia. He was only 24 years old. This morning author and musicologist Chris Epting explained the accident, where exactly it happened, the impact it had on the band and even dispelled myths surrounding the tragedy.
Perhaps the most well-known Doobie Brother joined us this morning to talk about his life in the band. This, of course, is coming on the heels of their newly-released book "Long Train Runnin': Our Story Of The Doobie Brothers, which was co-written by our good buddy Chris Epting. Tom Johnston talked forming the band, meeting Pat Simmons, bringing Michael McDonald into the fold, and even having Stevie Nicks as a neighbor in their early years. He also touched on many of their hit songs and how they came to be, including one that forced him to wake their producer up at 3 in the morning!
Our good musicologist buddy Chris Epting was back this morning, with another story about classic rock that we'd never heard before! It's from his new book he co-authored with Tom Johnston and Pat Simmons (of the Doobies), called "Long Train Runnin': Our Story of The Doobie Brothers." Today's tale revolved around the house the Doobies lived in at the corner of a neighborhood, and you won't believe the other future classic rock stars who lived at the opposite end of the block! Here's what to expect in the book: For the first time, the incredible true story of the legendary band, The Doobie Brothers, written by founding members Pat Simmons and Tom Johnston.Only a very few rock bands have had the longevity, success, and drama of The Doobie Brothers. Born out of late 1960s NorCal, and led by Pat Simmons and Tom Johnston, they stood alongside their contemporaries The Grateful Dead, The Allman Brothers, and many others as an iconic American rock band. The train was rolling along, hits were flowing like wine, and arenas were packed with fans who wanted to see them live...then Tom Johnston, the band's front man and lead guitarist, became ill and had to leave. The Doobies' train came to a screeching halt. All of a sudden the band started contemplating the end of the road only seven years into their career, just as things were taking off. But Pat Simmons made sure they were far from the end and began the process of keeping the band together through most of the next decade.A soul-steeped backup singer for Steely Dan named Michael McDonald took a shot at singing some of the Doobies' songs on tour, and all of a sudden a new chapter in the Doobie Brothers' story began. The band expanded their sound and had even more hits with their new front addition. Tom recovered from his health issues, but the band had moved on. When it came time for a reunion concert in the '80s, Tom got the call and was back in the mix. Led once again by Pat and Tom, The Doobie Brothers have been touring ever since and maintain a massive fan base the world over.Never before have Pat and Tom shared their story, in their own words. In Long Train Runnin' they'll change that.
In this episode of Delphines Circle, we have a rare variety of man, a modern day scribe, a whisperer of truths, a tight rope walker who straddles the intimate trust of famous public figures, at the fascinating crossroads of truth and the intrigue of revelational scandal. And like a rare and refined liquor, when mixed by deft hand, the results are a most intoxicating ambrosia. This ephemeral and elusive style of intelligence required, we hope is not lost on you, shines through with the steady glow of an Alchemists Stone when Chris speaks. And the resounding humility of Mr.Epting's description of his own work, speaks volumes of these effervescent qualities. So sit tight, and at a minimum, you may yet learn tricks of the trade that could prove invaluable in extracting that intoxicating elixir from the world around you. Chris Epting is the author of 40 travel/history books, including James Dean Died Here (Santa Monica Press), Roadside Baseball (McGraw Hill), Hello It's Me, Dispatches From a Pop Culture Junkie (Santa Monica Press) and many others. He is also an award-winning travel writer and has contributed articles for such publications as the Los Angeles Times, Westways and Travel + Leisure magazine, among other publications. In addition, Chris is a memoirist and has co-written Def Leppard's Phil Collen's memoir, Adrenalized, the John Oates Memoir Change of Seasons, and Long Train Runnin' with the Doobie Brothers among many others. Originally from New York, Chris now lives in Southern California. Chris started out at an advertising agency on Madison Avenue where he wrote commercials and ad campaigns. He soon became creative director at a number of Los Angeles advertising agencies. He won lots of awards for these but felt something was missing. There were books he wanted to write and stories he wanted to tell and the confines of the advertising industry was just not going to allow that. So he made a change. He started writing books about the things he loves; travel, music, baseball and popular culture. For about 10 years he had a weekly column in the Los Angeles Times and wrote for the Huffington Post for about six years. He appeared on many TV and radio shows. For about eight years he was the national spokesman for the wonderful and successful Hampton Hotel Save-A-Landmark program which allowed me to travel extensively throughout the country, telling stories and working to help preserve some of America's true treasures. Currently he is working on several book projects he is thrilled about, along with a couple of television projects that he is equally excited to get involved with. He also recently designed a writing course that is quite satisfying for him to teach.
