This is Play That Rock n' Roll's interview with STU COOK, legendary bassist of Creedence Clearwater Revival! Stu visited the show to promote an album he recorded (called "JACKDAWG") along with John McFee and Keith Knudson from The Doobie Brothers. In this conversation, we talk about how JACKDAWG got started, their songwriting process, why the album took so long to get a proper release, and how they came up with the name. Stu also tells the stories behind a few of the tracks, and shares his memories of drummer Keith Knudson. We also discuss two major aspects of Stu's career. The first being his production work on Roky Erickson's 1980 album “The Evil One”. And then we close the interview with Stu reflecting on his time playing in Creedence Clearwater Revisited, which is how I saw him in concert. What happens when rock legends from two iconic bands lock themselves in a studio with no rules, no label pressure and total creative freedom? In this very special episode of VRP Rocks, Paul Stephenson sits down with Stu Cook of Creedence Clearwater Revival and John McFee of The Doobie Brothers to unearth the incredible lost story of Jackdawg — a band made up of three Rock & Roll Hall of Famers whose early '90s album was shelved before it ever got a proper release… until now. Hear how this unique project came together, why it disappeared for decades and why 2025 is finally the time for Jackdawg's music to be heard.

He was a member of one of America's most iconic rock bands — and in this exclusive interview, Stu Cook takes us deep into the story of Creedence Clearwater Revival. From the band's humble beginnings as a high school trio to headlining Woodstock, scoring a UK No.1 with Bad Moon Rising and releasing six albums in just over two years — Stu shares a front-row perspective on the meteoric rise of CCR. We talk about his friendship with Doug Clifford, the origin of the band's name, the whirlwind recording and touring schedule and why CCR's story is unlike any other in rock history. There's also chat about the long-lost documentary, the late Tom Fogerty, and why Bayou Country still holds a special place for Stu. If you love the music of CCR, this is a must-listen. And if you want even more from the CCR universe, scroll back to episode 28 for my interview with drummer Doug Clifford, and stay tuned for part two of this conversation — where Stu returns alongside John McFee of the Doobie Brothers to discuss a long-shelved album finally seeing the light of day. More than 8 years ago, Paul Asbury Seaman came to me with an idea for a mix. He would provide the theme and tracklist, and I would man the faders and knobs to create his first guest mix. Of course that first mix was a train-themed set. Now, after 9 railway mixes & many hours traveling on the audio tracks, Paul brings us his tenth train-themed mix. This one is a b it different than the others so I'll let Paul tell you about it: "To celebrate my tenth train mix for Low Light Mixes I'm doing a collection of vocal tracks. There are way too many great train songs to call this set a “Best Of,” thus the qualified title. (I have five CD-length train song mixes for my own use.) These are some of my favorites. And here's several more to start your own playlists, that didn't make the cut only because of time limitations: “People Get Ready” (several good versions), “City of New Orleans” (Arlo Guthrie), “Locomotive Breath” (Jethro Tull), “Long Train Runnin'” (Doobie Brothers), “The Midnight Special” (CCR), “Downtown Lights” (Annie Lennox version) and of course “Hear My Train a Comin'” by Jimi Hendrix (from the Winterland LIVE box set)." Thanks, Paul, for another thoughtful collection of songs. Here's to 10 more excursions on the rails. We welcome one of the venue's regular photographers, who chose a fiery image of Slayer guitarist Kerry King as one of his favorites from over the years. Back on August 4th, the Doobie Brothers, one of Pine Knob's most frequent visitors, opened its latest North American tour there. Also in town recently was Jerry Cantrell, guitarist with the band Alice in Chains, who also tours and records as a solo artist. Coming to Pine Knob on September 10th are the Tedeschi Trucks Band and Gov't Mule, a must-see for guitar fans. We also visited recently with Wesley Schultz from the Lumineers, who will be playing their biggest Detroit area show yet on September 13th at Comerica Park. That same night, Bonnie Raitt will be headlining just across the street at the Fox Theatre. On Saturday, September 20th, Riff Fest returns to Pine Knob, bringing Canada's Three Days Grace along with Breaking Benjamin as co-headliners.

Episode 325: In 1972, a 19-year-old bass player and natural born singer from Kentucky and Indiana auditioned for an emerging band called New Grass Revival. Over almost 20 years, John Cowan would be the voice of that ensemble, through mega tours supporting Leon Russell, improbable country radio success, and the emergence of a whole new genre of roots music they gave a name to. NGR got Cowan into the Bluegrass Hall of Fame, but there's so much more - a mighty solo career, abundant collaborations, and a steady gig in the Doobie Brothers. Now his latest project is the new band The HercuLeons, a Nashville supergroup with fiddler/singer Andrea Zonn. Here, John covers his life in music. Next week, Andrea Zonn gets her turn.
The Doobie Brothers have been a band for more than 50 years. Their first album was released in 1972. It's now 2025, and they have a new record, called Walk This Road. And we're going to take our first listen to the album here on RockPopandRoll. How did they do? Would I listen again? Does it rock? Does it roll? Do we hear the echoes of "China Grove" or "BlackWater"? Dovwe want to? Lots of questions that we answer together. Let's go. www.rockpopandroll.com email: rockpoprollpodcast@gmail.com
Are you still reading these silly show notes? Honestly, bless your heart. You're a true Time Machiner. Or you're just really bored at work. Anyway, on this week's episode, Dave and Milt climb into the Time Machine and rocket back to June 21, 1975 — the land of lava lamps, fringe vests, and an absolutely bonkers Billboard Top 10 Albums chart. We're talkin' Elton, Earth, Wind & Fire, The Beach Boys, and even Alice Cooper giving us all the Welcome-to-My-Nightmare vibes (spoiler: it's not a lullaby). But wait — Milt's back from Africa! That's right, our Chartmeister went on a literal safari. Lions. Giraffes. Possibly cursed sand. He's got stories, and Dave is mildly concerned for his health and sanity. Oh, and intern Jack "The Fact Machine" Nathanson drops in to host a chaotic 80s music trivia quiz that somehow leads to Warrant, Mr. Roboto, David Lee Roth, and yes, Michael Bolton co-writing a KISS song. You can't make this stuff up. The episode ends (because it has to) with the boys politely kicking some albums off the list and replacing them with stuff they actually like. Sorry, Chicago, but y'all were in your weird phase.
