For nearly 55 years, The Doobie Brothers have been creating music and touring the world with no signs of slowing down. And for the first time in the band's history, the four current, principal members have recorded in-studio together for their upcoming album release titled, “Walk This Road”, which is set to be released on June 6. The album launch will also include an extensive tour of Europe and the States that begins in July. “Walk This Road” contains ten tracks and is a true band effort, and it includes the return of Michael McDonald alongside founding members Tom Johnston and Patrick Simmons, as well as John McFee, and was produced by John Shanks. The new album contains a variety of musical styles, with great vocal harmonies and the incredible musicianship we've all come to expect from this Hall of Fame caliber band. Here to talk to us today about “Walk This Road”, and his reentry into the band, is our good friend and past guest, Michael McDonald.

PATRICK SIMMONS  'THE LOST INTERVIEWS' with RAY SHASHO Episode 16 Interviewed Tuesday, November 15, 2011  I had the opportunity to interview Doobie Brothers legendary guitarist and songwriter Patrick Simmons a few days before the 2011 Orlando Calling festival. Pat Simmons was introduced to future Doobie Brothers bandmates Tom Johnston and John Hartman by Moby Grape's Skip Spence in 1969 forming the foundation to what would eventually be one of the most esteemed classic rock bands in history.  Pat is usually identified as the Doobie Brother with the longest hair. His heartfelt vocal styles are significant to the band's success. He's an important musician with eclectic musical styles and tastes. Some of his many compositions with the band include the classic “Black Water” (which became their first number one hit) “South City Midnight Lady,” “Dependin' On You,” “Dangerous,” “Echoes Of Love” and “Clear as the Driven Snow.” His on-stage presence is both surreal and overwhelming during his solo of “Jesus Is Just Alright.” Here's my interview with singer, songwriter, guitar virtuoso, and founding member of The Doobie Brothers … Patrick Simmons Doobie Brothers official website http://www.doobiebros.com/ Patrick Simmons musical credits on allmusic.com http://www.allmusic.com/artist/patrick-simmons-p20546/credits     Support us on PayPal!

TOM JOHNSTON THE DOOBIE BROTHERS ‘THE LOST INTERVIEWS' with RAY SHASHO EPISODE 15 INTERVIEWED FEBRUARY 17TH 2013   The Doobie Brothers are one of those bands that we've depended on, year after year, and expect to see performing invariably at outdoor music festivals, pavilions, arenas, casinos and bike week events across the nation. The group has been exhilarating audiences for decades yet appear timeless onstage. One of the principal reasons for the longevity and success of the Doobie Brothers has a lot to do with an unmitigated affection shared between the band and its audience. It's been an amazing love affair that has persevered for over forty-two years. When the Doobie Brothers finally call it quits … rock ‘n' roll will probably call it quits too.  Tom Johnston is the voice, lyricist and guitarist on numerous classic hit recordings by the Doobie Brothers. Inspired by listening to R&B music on the radio, California native Johnston started his first band at 14, eventually broadening his musical horizons by singing with soul and blues groups. After moving to San Jose to finish college, Tom met Skip Spence, original drummer for the Jefferson Airplane. Spence introduced Johnston to drummer John Hartman. Spence was also a founding member of Moby Grape which had a major influence on the Doobie Brothers. Tom Johnston, John Hartman and bassist Greg Murphy formed the power trio “Pud.” When “Pud” unraveled, the evolution of the Doobie Brothers began to take shape. While living in a home dubbed as their “musical headquarters,” guitarist Patrick Simmons and bassist Dave Shogren joined the group. The band quickly generated a huge following in California. In 1971, the Doobie Brothers launched their self- titled debut album, The Doobie Brothers on the Warner Brothers label with legendary producers Ted Templeman and Lenny Waronker. The first track on the album, “Nobody” penned by Tom Johnston, would later resurface in 2010 on their latest release, World Gone Crazy. Their second studio album Toulouse Street (named for a street in the French Quarter of New Orleans) introduced new bassist Tiran Porter and second drummer Michael Hossack (Navy Veteran). The album spawned the Tom Johnston penned classic hits, “Listen to the Music” (#11 Top 100 Billboard Hit -1972), “Rockin' Down the Highway” and “Jesus Is Just Alright,” (#35 Billboard Top 100 Hit -1973) written by Arthur Reynolds (1965) and performed by The Byrds (1969). In 1973, the Doobie Brothers released, The Captain and Me spotlighting some of the bands most memorable classic rock tunes penned by Tom Johnston … “Long Train Runnin'”(#8 Billboard Hot 100 Hit) and perhaps the bands anthem song, “China Grove” (#15 Billboard Hot 100 Hit). The Captain and Me also featured a guest performance by future Doobie Brothers and Steely Dan guitarist Jeff “Skunk” Baxter. The Doobie Brothers fourth studio album, What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits released in 1974 spawned the Tom Johnston penned songs, “Another Park, Another Sunday” (#32 Billboard Hot 100 Hit) and “Eyes of Silver” (#52 Billboard Hot 100 Hit). The album also featured Pat Simmons penned tribute to “The Big Easy,” “Black Water” (#1 Billboard Hot 100 Hit -1975). Stampede released in 1975 was the final album before Michael McDonald took over lead vocalist duties from an ailing Tom Johnston. The album featured the cover version, “Take Me in Your Arms (Rock Me A Little While)” (#11 Billboard Hot 100 Hit -1975) written by the Motown team of Holland-Dozier-Holland. Subsequent albums …Takin' It to the Streets (1976), Livin' on the Fault Line (1977), Minute by Minute (1978) and One Step Closer (1980) featured a successful second incarnation of the band, which primarily consisted of Michael McDonald(vocals, keyboards) Patrick Simmons (guitars/vocals) Jeff “Skunk” Baxter (guitars, steel guitars), Tiran Porter(bass, vocals), John Hartman (drums) and Keith Knudsen (drums). *Tom Johnston played and sang “Turn It Loose” and “Wheels of Fortune” on the album Takin' It to the Streets. John McFee was added to the Doobie Brothers lineup in 1979 replacing Jeff “Skunk” Baxter and was featured on One Step Closer. After a successful run, the band's signature sound and direction became disillusioned. While working on his solo project, Tom Johnston rejoined the band for a Farewell Tour, and then the Doobie Brothers would call it quits as a band for the next five years. The reformation of the Doobie Brothers was contrived when the band's alumni were asked by drummer Keith Knudsen to perform at a concert to benefit veterans' causes. The band discovered that tickets were in great demand and soon embarked on a twelve-city tour.   In 1989, Cycles, the tenth studio recording by the Doobie Brothers, now on Capitol Records, witnessed the return of Tom Johnston and drummer Michael Hossack to the studio as a band. Tom Johnston's distinctive vocals returned, and the band re-established their musical roots. Subsequent releases … Brotherhood (1991), Sibling Rivalry (2000) and World Gone Crazy (2010). World Gone Crazy was the Doobie Brothers highest charting album since 1989 receiving rave reviews and featuring the longtime core lineup of Tom Johnston and Pat Simmons. The Doobie Brothers band functions like a well-oiled machine, touring consistently year after year and enchanting music enthusiasts worldwide. The current lineup of Tom Johnston (vocals/guitar), Pat Simmons (vocals/guitars), John McFee (guitar/strings/vocals), John Cowan (bass), Guy Allison (keyboards/vocals), Marc Russo (saxophones), Ed Toth (drums) and Tony Pia (drums)… represent a musical legacy that defines the quintessence of rock ‘n' roll and a band that we've always depended on throughout the years. The Doobie Brothers have sold more than 40-million albums worldwide. …So why aren't they in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame?   Tom Johnston and the Doobie Brothers will be performing live as part of the Bands, Brew & BBQ concert series at Busch Gardens in Tampa on Sunday, February 24th. This week Capt. Content reminds us that something unique happened in the 90s with “Classic Rock” radio where they completely omitted any new contributions musically from the bands. In the 90's, the “Legacy Act” tag hadn't hit yet and bands were still trying to be true to themselves, but still be relevant. We're playing the Lost and Forgotten songs released during the Alternative Rock era from bands that we all know and love. What's this InObscuria thing? What the Riff?!?
1978 - December: The Doobie Brothers “Minute By Minute”

What the Riff?!?

There are two distinct eras of music by The Doobie Brothers.  From their formation in 1970 until 1975, Tom Johnston was the lead vocalist, and the group had a mainstream rock sound, with some folk and “California Country” influences.  Starting in 1975, Michael McDonald joined the group as a keyboardist, as well as providing lead vocal work to help Johnston, who was having health problems at the time.  Over the following years, Johnston would have less influence as he neared retirement from the group in 1977.  Michael McDonald would influence the group into a more soulful sound, often called “blue eyed soul.”  Today we would call this “yacht rock.”Minute By Minute, the eighth studio album from the group, comes from the height of the McDonald era.  It is a high water mark for the Doobie Brothers both commercially and critically.  The album would spend 87 weeks on the Billboard 200 album charts in the U.S., topping the charts in five of those weeks.  It would also produce multiple nominations and wins at the Grammy awards in 1980 including Record and Song of the Year wins for “What a Fool Believes.”The Doobie Brothers would break up in 1982, then reform with Johnston back as front man in 1987.  Michael McDonald would rejoin the band full time in 2019 in time for their 50th anniversary tour. You can still find them on tour today.Rob brings us this soulful album for today's podcast. What A Fool BelievesThe lyrics of this hit narrate the story of a man who meets an old crush and tries to rekindle their relationship, only to find out that there never really was a relationship in the first place.  Michael McDonald and Kenny Loggins wrote this single, which became a number 1 hit in the US and Canada.Dependin' On YouMichael McDonald and Patrick Simmons wrote this song, and Simmons takes over lead singer duties.  It went to number 25 on the Billboard Hot 100.  The Latin-infused call-and-response song celebrates a rock solid love that is always there.Don't Stop to Watch the WheelsThis shuffle beat deeper cut is sung by Patrick Simmons, and was the B-side from the single release of “What a Fool Believes.” “Look out, hold on, don't stop to watch the wheels go 'round.  Look out, hold on, I got to cover ground.”Minute By MinuteThe title track finds Michael McDonald handling lead vocals, and was written by McDonald and Lester Abrams.  The single was released in April of 1979, and it went to number 14 on the US charts.  The smooth keyboard-driven sound reflects the  Motown inspiration, and is a hallmark song of the “yacht rock” genre. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Every Which Way But Loose by Eddie Rabbitt (from the motion picture “Every Which Way But Loose”)Clint Eastwood would take a break from his action and western movies for this comedy with an orangutan co-star named Clyde. STAFF PICKS:Don't Stop Me Now by Queen Bruce leads off this week's staff picks with a single from Queen's "Jazz" album.  While this tribute to hedonism did well in the UK, it only hit number 86 on the US charts.  It would grow in popularity over time, and would be featured in multiple commercials including Toyota, L'Oréal, and American Idol.Double Vision by ForeignerLynch features a song from Foreigner's second album of the same name.  It reached number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100.  Surprisingly, the inspiration for the song title was an event at a hockey game when a goalie had to be removed after a collision on the ice because he was experiencing double vision.Homicide by 999 Wayne brings us a band from London that is named for the number used in the UK to reach emergency services.  This punk-infused song takes a tongue-in-cheek look at serial killers.  While a top 40 hit in the UK, it didn't chart in the States.  You might recognize this song from the soundtrack to the John Wick series, “The Continental.”Follow You Follow Me by Genesis Rob closes out the staff picks with a softer song from the progressive group Genesis, the closer from their album “...And Then There Were Three...”  The group had condensed to the three members of Phil Collins, Mike Rutherford, and Tony Banks, after former member Steve Hackett chose to leave.   INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Steamer Lane Breakdown by The Doobie BrothersWe get a little double dip of the Doobies as we exit today's podcast on this instrumental number.  Thanks for listening to “What the Riff?!?” NOTE: To adjust the loudness of the music or voices, you may adjust the balance on your device. Although neither popular nor long-lived as a band,  the New York Dolls were one of the most influential bands of the punk and glam rock genres.  Their debut album, the eponymously named New York Dolls came out on the strength of their lower Manhattan fan base and received critical acclaim.  However, their appeal outside of New York was limited and the album was considered a commercial failure in the United States. The New York Dolls (also known as “The Dolls”) sported an androgynous look onstage, dressing in satin, high heels, dresses, and lots of makeup.  Much of their wardrobe was acquired at a local Salvation Army thrift store.  The band personnel included David Johansen on vocals, Arthur “Killer” Kane on bass, Jerry Nolan on drums, Sylvain Sylvain on keyboards, rhythm guitar and vocals, and Johnny Thunder on lead guitar and vocals.  Front man David Johansen would later perform under the name Buster Poindexter.Although the band would produce only one other album after their debut, their influence was significant for both punk rock and glam rock genres.Wayne brings us this forerunner of punk that is “too fast to live, too young to die.” FrankensteinThis song is sometimes listed as “Frankenstein (Orig.)” because Edgar Winter's song of the same name had already been released prior to the band recording their own, though it had been used in their live shows previously.  The song was inspired by how repressed kids would gravitate to Manhattan from all over.PillsThe only cover on the album was a 1963 Bo Diddley song.  “While I was laying in a hospital bed, a rock n' roll nurse went through my head.  She says, "hold out your arm, stick out yo' toungue, I got some pills, boy, I'm 'on give you one.”Jet BoyThis track has a more heavy metal sound in the guitar.  The lyrics are simply about a jet boy who stole a baby.  There is little explanation as to what a jet boy is other than to say that he flies around New York City.  “Jet Boy” was a 50's era comic superhero.Bad GirlThe vocal parts on this track hearken back to a 1950's style, and it also features a boogie rhythm.  ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Oo-De-Lally by Roger Miller (from the animated picture “Robin Hood”)Yes, it is a stark departure from the Dolls.  Disney rolled out their take on the animated Robin Hood tale in this picture featuring Robin Hood as a fox.   STAFF PICKS:Over the Hills and Far Away by Led ZeppelinRob leads out the staff picks with a great acoustic riff from Jimmy Page, layering 6- and 12-string guitars.  The lyrics were inspired by the feelings of the band touring on the road.  This is a single off Led Zeppelin's fifth studio album, Houses of the Holy, and made it to number 51 on the charts. We Can Make It Right by Sherbet Bruce's staff pick is a group that never broke into the US market in a big way, but was one of the biggest pop rock acts in Australia in the 1970's.  This track leads off the second studio album entitled “On With the Show,” which hit number 6 on the Australian charts.  The song was co-written by Sherbs keyboardist Garth Porter and guitarist Clive Shakespeare.Long Train Runnin' by The Doobie Brothers Lynch features a well known riff from the Tom Johnston vocal era of the Doobies.  The group played “Long Train Runnin'” for three years before it was recorded, and it went through a number of names an iterations before its final form was created in the studio.Still...You Turn Me On by Emerson, Lake & Palmer Wayne wraps up the staff picks with a ballad from prog rock power trio Keith Emerson (keyboards) Greg Lake (guitar and vocals) and Carl Palmer (percussion).  This is more acoustic rock with a little psychedelic rock thrown in than prog rock, but it is a hauntingly beautiful song.  The lyrics are inspired by the feeling of playing in front of an audience. COMEDY TRACK:Sister Mary Elephant by Cheech & ChongA number of comedy sketches were released by this duo, including this Catholic school class skit.

Born in Aberdeen, Washington, he has been the only consistent member of the band throughout their tenure. In 1970, a California-based power trio consisting of Tom Johnston, Skip Spence, and John Hartman, teamed up with Simmons to form a group together. They would call themselves “The Doobie Brothers”, after their friend Keith "Dyno" Rosen, who either lived with or next to the band told them Why don't you call yourself the Doobie Brothers because you're always smoking pot? Simmons wrote and sang many songs for the Doobie Brothers, including "South City Midnight Lady", "Dependin' On You", "Echoes of Love", "Wheels of Fortune" and "Black Water", the group's first #1 record. Our good musicologist buddy Chris Epting was back this morning, with another story about classic rock that we'd never heard before! It's from his new book he co-authored with Tom Johnston and Pat Simmons (of the Doobies), called "Long Train Runnin': Our Story of The Doobie Brothers." Today's tale revolved around the house the Doobies lived in at the corner of a neighborhood, and you won't believe the other future classic rock stars who lived at the opposite end of the block! Here's what to expect in the book: For the first time, the incredible true story of the legendary band, The Doobie Brothers, written by founding members Pat Simmons and Tom Johnston.Only a very few rock bands have had the longevity, success, and drama of The Doobie Brothers. Born out of late 1960s NorCal, and led by Pat Simmons and Tom Johnston, they stood alongside their contemporaries The Grateful Dead, The Allman Brothers, and many others as an iconic American rock band. The train was rolling along, hits were flowing like wine, and arenas were packed with fans who wanted to see them live...then Tom Johnston, the band's front man and lead guitarist, became ill and had to leave. The Doobies' train came to a screeching halt. All of a sudden the band started contemplating the end of the road only seven years into their career, just as things were taking off. But Pat Simmons made sure they were far from the end and began the process of keeping the band together through most of the next decade.A soul-steeped backup singer for Steely Dan named Michael McDonald took a shot at singing some of the Doobies' songs on tour, and all of a sudden a new chapter in the Doobie Brothers' story began. The band expanded their sound and had even more hits with their new front addition. Tom recovered from his health issues, but the band had moved on. When it came time for a reunion concert in the '80s, Tom got the call and was back in the mix. Led once again by Pat and Tom, The Doobie Brothers have been touring ever since and maintain a massive fan base the world over.Never before have Pat and Tom shared their story, in their own words. In Long Train Runnin' they'll change that.
