We've had a number of masterful movies this season and Women Talking is another one. Q: How do you tell a story when everything you've ever known is at stake? A: Consider the pros and cons using multiple protagonists. This is a great movie where the level of writing craft is high, and the core event provides more relief than you thought possible. If you can bear to watch this movie more than once, it will be worth it. -M. Welcome to an episode that's a bit different.  Today, there are four of us talking and sharing experiences from the perspective of Foreign Service life – mainly as spouses and one contractor.  If you happened to listen to episode 162 which was about fitness, you may recognize these amazing women – Hillery Midkiff, Susie Csorsz Brown, and Morgan Loosli.  The four of us all met while living and working Sri Lanka, starting back in 2020.  At this point, I am now living in the US, Hillery and Susie are still in Colombo, Sri Lanka, and Morgan and her family are living in Shanghai. We recorded this conversation in the spring of 2024, and it got lost in my folders, so hence the delay in publication.  As I listened to it recently, I appreciated the stories and decided it needed to be released into the wild!IF you are not connected with the Foreign Service, a warning that there are a number of acronyms that you will hear and likely not understand.  The most frequent one is probably EFM which stands for Eligible Family Member – the term given to spouses and children who are considered dependents of Foreign Service Officers.  Susie, Morgan, and I are in the role of EFMs.  Hillery is a contracted officer and her husband is an EFM.  Other than that, I think you'll be able to follow just fine despite the other acronyms. We are talking about careers, finding professional fulfillment, and unique challenges that are associated with living and moving internationally.  Sometimes in countries where we have permission to work in the local economy, and sometimes in countries where we do not have permission to work locally.  A certain number of jobs exist at our US Embassies and Consulates that are specific for EFM employment – Susie and Morgan will share about some of their experiences in those positions.  I have chosen to develop my own business and have also worked on a part-time basis as a trainer for the Foreign Service Institute, the training center for the US Department of State.  Susie, Morgan, Hillery – thank you for this conversation.  Thanks for sharing the ups and downs and realities of this interesting life we live.  I'm super grateful for your friendships and how we stay connected across the globe!  (And quick note that Hillery does indeed drop the F bomb at one point in our conversation, so it's marked explicit.  She'll appreciate the shoutout for that.  You are welcome, Hillery!!)And with that, let me turn this over to our conversation that is graciously hosted by Susie.Make Life Less Difficult

My friend Kristina Nasti and I are starting a talk show. We're not sure what we're gonna call it, but for now, it's airing on Self Transformation Radio (my existing podcast I started in June 2022) and on my brand new SUBSTACK! :)This is the kind of talk show where we say anything that's on our minds. And we mean anything. A little background: Kristina and I met on TikTok! I did a Human Design session with her (I'm a Projector!!). When I found out she lived only 30 minutes away, I invited her to come hang out at my house ASAP, and we've been great friends ever since. We've had many "hot girl walks" and girls' nights together in the short time I've known her (less than two years). She's attended Transform as a co-host in March of 2024.Kristina is also the content manager for SelfTransformation.com -- something she is VERY GOOD at -- and it's probably even the only reason we're doing the talk show to begin with. Having Kristina on the team has freed up so much mental space to figure out what I really want to do. And both of us are on this journey of sorts to becoming our true selves and elevating that to the highest level possible. Living our best life. We both recognize that it's not money we're after; it's this. Full self-expression. That's what's going to make us happiest, AND it's going to help the most people because it will mean our frequency is high (authenticity is the highest frequency)... which will attract the people who need to hear our message. We're here to talk with a purpose, not just about nonsense. That doesn't mean we won't gossip a little (before we decide not to!), but we want to focus on what we care most about — the stuff that lights us up, and the stuff that makes us angry, too.So that's what I mean by anything goes. And the great thing about Substack is that it'll never be canceled. I'm so excited to speak my mind with Kristina. She is one of my very best friends, one of the only small handful of people who I can tell really "see" me. Hope you enjoy our pilot episode

Pretti, being an experienced and successful professional in the film industry, had me fooled when I thought that the majority of her episode was going to be about filmmaking and Bollywood. To my pleasant surprise, it's quite the opposite of that. I'd describe this episode as looking at the realities of India through the lens of a proud “fauji kid” who grew up in the protected and almost utopian cantonment zones all around the country. Pretti spent her childhood and adolescence in 11 different schools in 11 states throughout the country, where she lived in the truly secular environment of the army cantonments that greatly influenced her identity and beliefs. While she believes her background as an “army brat” to be one of her greatest strengths, she also reflects on the culture shock of moving to Mumbai, working in the film industry, and starting from the bottom. However, this added all the plot to her life, with 2 of her films getting shelved, having to spend the night in her broker's office, failed relationships, and every other experience that seemed disastrous at the moment but ultimately brought her closer to understanding herself better. For everyone who knows Pretti professionally or personally: tune in because I'm sure you will learn something new about her. For those who don't know her: it's my pleasure to introduce you to this headstrong, intellectual, and empathetic feminist. Our conversation was about family, career, the societal pressure to get married, money, giving back, and spirituality. Stay tuned until the very end for movie/show recommendations, one of which inspired the title of this episode.

They also throw in some Anyone But You, Women Talking, Chevalier, and What Jennifer Did. The episode opens with the shocking revelation that Kevin may now be an official Sydney Sweeney fan. It makes no sense! But he watched Immaculate and Anyone But You and enjoyed both! Lauren is thoroughly enjoying the new HBO series, A Gentleman in Moscow, starting Ewan McGregor. It seems to be an excellent adaptation of the popular novel. Next up, Kevin talks the dark and twisted take of Baby Reindeer, the new Netflix series. It's billed as a dark comedy but is anything but! It's an absolutely fascinating tale of stalking and how it can impact lives across the board. Lauren talks the surprisingly unsatisfying Women Talking before Kevin talks about the Netflix true crime doc, What Jennifer Did, which he actually did enjoy! Lauren closes the show with a glowing review for Chevalier on Hulu. A film about a young black man musician in France challenging the musical hierarchy, such as Mozart and more! We later mine the fine details of Luc's approach to shooting the deceptively “simple” WOMEN TALKING and how he and director Sarah Polley identified when and how to visually express the women's story and their evolving characters. And, towards the end, Luc thanks us for responding to his email years ago following a difficult professional experience. - Recommended Viewing: WOMEN TALKING - This episode is sponsored by Aputure Instagram: @aputure.lighting

Ethics for Apocalyptic Times: Theapoetics, Autotheory, and Mennonite Literature (Penn State UP, 2023) is about the role literature can play in helping readers cope with our present-day crises, including the COVID-19 pandemic, climate change, and the shift toward fascism in global politics. Using the lens of Mennonite literature and their own personal experience as a culturally Mennonite, queer, Latinx person, Daniel Shank Cruz investigates the age-old question of what literature's role in society should be, and argues that when we read literature theapoetically, we can glean a relational ethic that teaches us how to act in our difficult times. In this book, Cruz theorizes theapoetics―a feminist reading strategy that reveals the Divine via literature based on lived experiences―and extends the concept to show how it is queer, decolonial, and equally applicable to secular and religious discourse. Cruz's analysis focuses on Mennonite literature―including Sofia Samatar's short story collection Tender and Miriam Toew's novel Women Talking―but also examines a non-Mennonite text, Samuel R. Delany's novel The Mad Man, alongside practices of haiku and tarot, to show how reading theapoetically is transferable to other literary traditions. Weaving together close reading and personal narrative, this pathbreaking book makes a significant and original contribution to the field of Mennonite literary studies. Cruz's arguments will also be appreciated by literary scholars interested in queer theory and the role of literature in society. Daniel Shank Cruz (they/multitudes) is a queer, disabled boricua who grew up in New York City and Lancaster, Pennsylvania. This week is the one-year anniversary of the Dobbs decision, when the Supreme Court overturned Roe v Wade. Politicians think reproductive freedom isn't that big of a deal – “just a bunch of women, talking about their Dobbs again!” – but the truth is that women haven't forgotten. We're continuing to talk about it and share our personal stories, because those stories are how we connect with each other. We're “heart-wired” to respond to them. We're joined by Jen Perez, Red Wine & Blue's program director in Ohio. Jen tells her personal story about why she left her high-powered corporate job to get involved in politics, and the personal reasons that Dobbs motivated her to step up. Jen also shares some updates about the ballot measure to protect reproductive freedom in Ohio and how women across her state have been banding together to fight for their rights. After that, Amanda sits down with Renee Bracey Sherman, the founder of We Testify, an organization dedicated to uplifting and telling the stories of people who have abortions. Renee discusses what it's been like to lead an abortion storytelling organization in the wake of Dobbs and how she founded We Testify to make sure that people who have abortions don't just have a seat at the table but a seat at every table. Finally, Amanda, Rachel and Jasmine raise a glass to congressional aides, letters from camp, and celebrating half-birthdays in this episode's “Toast to Joy.”If you love this podcast and you want to help us bring more listeners into our community, we would love it if you could go into your podcast app and leave us a rating and review. The 95th Academy Awards will be presented on Sunday evening in Hollywood, with top contenders including “Tár,” “Women Talking” and “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” For readers, it's a perfect excuse to revisit two recent books about the Oscars. On this week's episode, the host Gilbert Cruz talks to our critic Alexandra Jacobs about “The Academy and the Award,” by Bruce Davis, a former executive director of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and “Oscar Wars,” by the journalist Michael Schulman, which she recently wrote about for the paper.“We like to think that this is a ceremony, a process about merit. But I think that has been proven wrong time and time again,” Cruz says.“It's like a political election,” Jacobs says, “or a sports contest that turns on a single play or call. These books really reveal that. It's just interesting how many times Oscar — as one of these books puts it — gets it wrong. Like, the movie that won isn't the one that you remember, or isn't the one that time judges as the best one. That's fascinating to see. … You might ask, What does this ceremony matter if it's not even adjudicating properly? But I think it matters because — look, it's the electronic hearth around which we gather. I think it matters because people crave communal entertainment experiences.”We would love to hear your thoughts about this episode, and about the Book Review's podcast in general. The film, directed by Sarah Polley and based on the novel by Miriam Towes, is about a group of Mennonite matriarchs who gather in a hayloft to decide, collectively, what they will do in the wake of a wave of sexual assaults committed against them by men in their community.  Hillary talks to Frances about the genesis of this project, and the challenging, universal questions posed by the film. They also look back at Frances' remarkable career—the brave choices she's made, and the iconic roles she's given us, from police chief Marge Gunderson in “Fargo” to a displaced, widowed worker seeking community in “Nomadland”— and forward, to what Frances sees for herself on the horizon.
