Cam and his wife were at a wedding reception last week. It was beautiful. One conversation, though, has stuck with him. ----- My wife and I stood with a young man at a wedding Saturday night as he lamented the lack of turkeys to hunt at his camp. There were no gobblers, he said, and he was a bit down in the mouth about it. “Why,” my wife asked. “In the spring,” he said, “the hens move to a different place where they like the environment for nesting. The gobblers follow. And wherever those hens go, it's not on our property. I wish there were something about our place that the hens liked but every spring they move away, and the gobblers go with them.” “Sounds a lot like the bars I used to go to in college,” I said. No reaction. Then my wife joined in. “How about making your place more romantic. Some mood lighting in the woods and you can play Sade and Lou Rawls. That'll make the hens want to stick around. Make it so romantic they can't bring themselves to leave.” And she began singing You'll Never Find Another Love Like Mine and doing a little shoulder dance. She and I laughed at the idea. It was funny! Both of us were imagining two turkeys doing a sensual dance around each other in the middle of the woods to Lou Rawls or Sade under some soft lights. We were wiping tears from our eyes. It was hysterical and we kept the joke going. It was good stuff! The young man's expression was, well…he was either pitying us, worried for us, or worried for himself. He thought none of it was funny. He didn't get the joke. He looked awkward because he felt awkward. Two people standing in front of him mopping tears from their eyes to something that he knew flew way over his head. Lou Rawls? Sade? Who were they? Should he offer us a nervous, sympathetic laugh? Should he excuse himself and quickly get lost in the crowd? The poor young man stood there uncomfortably, not knowing what to do. We stopped laughing and an awkward silence hung. It was the age gap. It reared its ugly head and stared all of us in the face. Was the key to getting the joke knowing who Sade and Lou Rawls is? Was the key to getting the joke hearing the song in your head and picturing the turkeys dancing? Was the joke something only old people like and when I was in my twenties would have felt sad for me, too. Does humor, like wine, age and change its complexity? And then, like wine, go bad. I could chalk the whole incident up to my wife and my shared odd sense of humor. I'm not gonna do that. I could chalk it up to our humor having gone bad. That's not it. I'm going to chalk it up to kids these days. Imagine two turkeys dancing in the woods to this music and try not to smile. Try I dare you. You can't not smile. It was funny! I worry about the future of our nation. I'm Cam Marston and I'm just trying to Keep It Real.
The name may not ring too many bells today, but from the 1960s through the 1990s you just had to turn on your television or (hit up your local comedy record store) and you were sure to run into the work of Sandy Baron who rose from playing the Catskills "borscht belt", to improv and satirical shows (including the US version of "That Was The Week That Was), to becoming a fixture in Vegas, in movies, and on television talk and game shows. In 1984 Sandy was introduced to a new generation of fans with his a role in Broadway Danny Rose, Woody Allen's tribute to shtickmeisters (and struggling agents), then in the 1990s he had a juicy late-career triumph on Seinfeld as Jack Klompus who was a comic antagonist of Jerry's dad. As always find extra cuts below and thanks for sharing our shows. Want more Sandy Baron? We don't usually include other artists in an episode, but how can we fail to give you the whole Lou Rawls classic "A Natural Man" -- with lyrics courtesy of Sandy Baron. https://youtu.be/y9tS0loD3vQ?si=BkE-OA-wTpBUV701 Sandy had one shot at his own sitcom (Hey Landlord!) and it tanked after just one year. Being a great standup comic, Sandy was able to turn his pain to laughs in this routine from shortly after the cancellation. https://youtu.be/jdr0GcxAoQo?si=q-YB2UAcumQDJTdK Woody Allen's Broadway Danny Rose was a love letter to the shtickmeisters of the past (and their sometimes hapless agents). Much of the story is told in flashback during a gathering of comics at the Carnegie Deli -- and Sandy was right in the middle of it. https://youtu.be/mXIM1JXWjm4?si=ZViQ3NSLjeJ4R3-g Longtime fans were delighted when Sandy surfaced in the 1990s playing a pesky rival of Jerry Seinfeld's dad on the classic sitcom Seinfeld. Here are some of of the best "Jack Klompus" moments from the show. https://youtu.be/XLK1eqK2kEo?si=-9LZ0EwUQ1o4BDVw

Happy New Year and thanks for downloading my favourite selections from The Disco Podcast's 2024 sets. And there was something powerful about February's mix, because that was by far your most popular download of the year. Quite a few tracks from that set have made it onto this Best Of, including Anane, Dave Leatherman, Paolo Bardelli, Saturday Love, Hold Tight and Ken@Work. 2024 definitely had more of a soulful disco vibe and that's reflected by edits and remakes of the inimitable Lou Rawls and Roberta Flack and Donny Hathaway, plus my personal favourite track of the year from Tamiko Jones - "Let it flow".

In this clip, legendary percussionist Ed Shea takes us back to his days at Sigma Sound Studios. Ed paints a vivid picture of the studio's bustling energy, where top-tier musicians like Bobby Eli and Tom Bell seamlessly crafted iconic records.Ed shares insider details about what it was like working with legends like Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff, recording albums for Lou Rawls, and navigating the laid-back yet precise atmosphere of Sigma. He talks about how the sessions were structured—three sessions a day, double scale pay, and often a relaxed schedule where creativity could flow uninterrupted. He also offers a practical tip for musicians: always be prepared. He recounts how he kept a manuscript book handy to quickly jot down parts when Leon Huff or other producers needed overdubs on the fly. Ed's approach to adapting to each session's unique demands highlights the professionalism and versatility that have defined his remarkable career.Ed also compares the relaxed recording environment to the high-pressure world of subbing on Broadway, giving you a glimpse into the different dynamics of studio and theater drumming.Subscribe today for more and to be notified when new content is released:Broadway Drumming 101 is a reader-supported publication. Daryl Hall and John Oates made lots of albums. And had a strong run of early hit singles. "Wait For Me" "Sara Smile" "She's Gone" "Rich Girl" What was the Hall & Oates heyday? The string of albums that they created at their career pop-rock apex? It came in the 1980's: Voices. Private Eyes. Big Bam Boom. Rock and Soul Part 1. Maybe even Live at the Apollo. Were they great albums? Early on, as artists tend to do, Hall & Oates had trouble clearly defining their sound, alternating among folk, soul, rock, and pop. None of their early albums—Whole Oats, Abandoned Luncheonette, and War Babies—were big sellers. A single would hit but not album traction on the charts - meaning the LP's were not big sellers. "She's Gone" off Abandoned Luncheonette was covered by Lou Rawls and Tavares, the latter version reached #1 on the R&B chart in 1974. Their first album for RCA, Daryl Hall & John Oates contained "Sara Smile", which hit #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in June 1976. Old label Atlantic then re-released "She's Gone", which reached #7 in October 1976. Abandoned Luncheonette hit #33 on the album charts on November 20, 1976, and stayed on for 38 weeks. Bigger Than Both of Us (1976) had a second single, "Rich Girl", that became Hall and Oates' first #1 hit in March 1977. A couple more top 20 singles. But it really wasn't the Hall and Oates we would know in the 1980's. They ended up building a fantastically successful body of work and career. The biggest-selling duo in rock history. Radio singles. Lots of radio music. But are there two albums and a half H&O albums that do really rock? Or pop-rock? Or are a 9 or 10 on the scale of "Is that a great album"? I thought I knew - I always think I know. But maybe I was wrong. We did some research and lots of listening to remind us of what it was. Take a podcast ride on the RockPopandRoll and Hall & Oates Philly Express soul/pop/R&B train and see what station - great albums or no - is the destination. Send us a textBob and Lisa the driving force behind The BellRays stop by to talk about their musical journey, touring, and their latest album, Heavy Steady Go.***Bob and Lisa Kekaula made The BellRays happen in 1990 in Riverside, California but they weren't really thinking about any of this then. They wanted to play music and they wanted it to feel good. They wanted people to WANT to get up, to NEED to get up and check out what was going on. Form an opinion. React. So they took everything they knew about; the Beatles, Stevie Wonder, the Who, the Ramones Billie Holiday, Lou Rawls, Hank Williams, the DB's, Jimmy Reed, and Led Zeppelin (to name a very few to whom “BLUES IS THE TEACHER”) and pressed it into service. Those bands and artists have since become “buzz words”, things to imitate and sound like. That was never The BellRays intention. The BellRays were never about coming up with a “sound”, or fitting in with a scene. It was about the energy that made all that music so irresistible. The BellRays' influences learned from the Blues and then learned how to make it their own. The Beatles wanted to play R&B, converted that energy, and invented “Rubber Soul”. The Ramones were trying to be Del Shannon or Neil Sedaka and out came “Rocket to Russia”.It's an organic trail that flows through Bob and Lisa and the current rhythm section of Pablo Rodas (Lisa and the Lips, Alber Solo) on bass and Craig Waters (Countdowns, Andre Williams, Cody Chestnut) on drums, and comes out honest and urgent. You will learn and you will feel. Blues is always teaching and Punk is always preaching. For more information go to their website: https://thebellrays.com/****If you would like to contact the show about being a guest please email us at Dauna@bettertopodcast.comThis episode is on YouTube:https://youtu.be/19BYiRDY42E Follow us on Social MediaInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/author_d.m.needom/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/bettertopodcastwithdmneedomHave a question or want to be a guest on the podcast email: dauna@bettertopodcast.comAudio production by Rich Zei of Third Ear AudioIntro and Outro music compliments of Fast SuziUpcoming guests: https://www.dmneedom.com/better-topodcast©2024 Better To...Podcast with D. Send us a textOn this episode, we sit down with George Guerrero, a life-long New Yorker, now living on the left coast in San Francisco. George takes us back to his earliest music memories, painting vivid scenes of late-night drives with Dad in NYC to pick up Mom from her night shift at the hospital with the soulful tunes of Lou Rawls playing on the eight track player. We discuss the evolution of music technology in cars, exploring how it shapes personal and cultural identities, and reflect on the paradox of choice in today's digital age. In candid authenticity, George walks us through the moments of 9/11 as seen through someone in Manhattan on that day and opens up about the emotional solace he found in music during those tragic events, offering a poignant recount of how Des'ree's "Kissing You" became the guide that helped him create a video tribute to the make-shift memorial set-up just uptown from Ground Zero. In the closing chapters, we explore the transformative power of music in various aspects of life, from getting comfortable in the kitchen to recovery from physical injuries. George shares compelling personal stories, like how Nancy Sinatra's "These Boots Are Made for Walkin'" became a motivational anthem during his recovery from a serious ankle injury, and how, as a lifelong Yankees fan, Frank Sinatra's “New York, New York” is seared into his memory. We close with the impact of family trips, the magic of Disney experiences, and George's quest to create a more equitable financial system. This episode is a warm celebration of music's profound impact on our lives, filled with love, nostalgia, and the enduring power of melodies to bring us together.Connect w/ George on his Instagram and website. In 1959, Charles Brown & Amos Milburn recorded a beautiful duet called "I Want to Go Home." It's like a nice highball, two ingredients that blend well (Milburn is the Rum and Brown is the Coke). Sam Cooke later transformed the song into "Bring it On Home To Me", which he sang with Lou Rawls, an impassioned vocal performance with some Gospel call and response. The Animals then brought the song to England and Eric Burdon hogged the song all to himself, but that's ok because there's Alan Price's organ. Girl group The Thrills did a high-tempo version that'll ... well ... thrill you. It's a guarantee! In '67, some Jersey garagers named Hole in the Wall did a cover of the Animals version and there's some amazing harmonies and organ. Finally, Seattle's The Fall-Outs essayed the song in '86 and it's charming and shambling and very non-grunge. Ha!!

Walker subsequently contacted about contributing drones to fill in the silence between his lyrics while working on his epic 2012 release Bish Bosch. Evidently, Sunn O))) brought their full stage equipment to Walker's studio for recording. Episode 173: In Conversation With Billy Vera (Part 1) Sarah usually writes these show notes, and on the rare occasion that I fill in for her, I do something silly - I either make them really short or I have ChatGPT help me by doing most of the work. This time, I asked to do them because I am still in shock that this episode exists and because it was a true thrill to speak with an artist who has been a favorite of mine since I was 16! After discovering Billy Vera, along with many others of my generation, thanks to the hit comedy "Family Ties", I would go on to collect his entire catalog, with the exception of "Queen of Diamonds / Jack of Hearts" by Evie Sands & Billy Vera which I haven't been able to find yet. I will one day though! I would watch him on TV shows like "Wiseguy" and "Into the Night", where he served as a late-night bandleader and often performed his wonderful songs. I would occasionally be surprised and excited to spot him in movies throughout the 80s and 90s. He was doing so many great things, and doing all of those things at a level which should have made him a Super Star if there was any justice in the world. With all of his various talents, songwriting and singing are where Billy truly shines, so getting to talk with him about his career and his music was an amazing experience. In this first episode (of two), we touched on so many topics, even going back to the mid-1960s and some of his earliest songs. I really hope you will enjoy this discussion on some of my favorite music. Topics that we cover in this first episode: · Billy's upcoming trip to Italy to perform and to receive an award at the Porretta Soul Music Festival · Working with Jerry Wexler · Writing songs professionally in NYC in the 1960s · A song he wishes he wrote · Writing "Room with a View" with Lowell Fulson · Working with Bonnie Raitt · Recording "Storybook Children" with Judy Clay · Playing the Apollo Theater · Thoughts on songwriting · Celebrating the 50th anniversary of Nuggets: Original Artyfacts from the First Psychedelic Era and "Don't Look Back" · His 1988 Capital album "Retro Nuevo" · The three styles of Production · Working with Lou Rawls and George Benson · Working with Arif Mardin · How did Jim Keltner become a Beater in 1988? · Working on the Blake Edwards movie "Blind Date" · Hanging out with Bruce Willis, Demi Moore, and Kim Basinger · Meeting L. Russell Brown · Being "inspired" by Loni Anderson · Writing his biggest hit "At this Moment" and the story behind the song · Writing Brian's favorite BV song "Here Comes The Dawn Again" · Releasing his biggest album on Rhino Records · Doing promo work in the 1980s · Advice from his mother You can learn more about Billy's story, his books, and his music at https://billyvera.com/ Follow him on Facebook for the latest info on his gigs and his weekly radio show: https://www.facebook.com/TheRealBillyVera Treat yourself to music and books by Billy here: https://www.amazon.com/s?k=billy+vera&crid=31CGZ21181YET&sprefix=billy+vera%2Caps%2C102&ref=nb_sb_noss_1 Read more at http://www.permanentrecordpodcast.com/ Visit us at https://www.facebook.com/permrecordpodcast Follow us at https://twitter.com/permrecordpod Check out some pictures at https://www.instagram.com/permanentrecordpodcast/ So this BlueSky thing looks shiny and new: https://bsky.app/profile/permrecordpod.bsky.social Oh! Bill Champlin was born in Oakland, California on May 21, 1947 to a musical family. His grandparents, mother and sisters have all been singers. After forming the Sons of Champlin in 1967, he focused his songwriting talents on material for the Sons. “They were breathing fire. They were the most talented of all the San Francisco bands”, said Mickey Hart of the Grateful Dead. The Sons' first album, “Loosen Up Naturally,” was released in 1969 and followed by six more albums before the Sons disbanded in 1977. After the breakup of the Sons, Bill moved to Los Angeles and worked as a session vocalist on numerous recordings from 1977 to 1985. The artists he worked with included Patti LaBelle, Lou Rawls, Elton John, Boz Scaggs, Donna Summer, Nancy Wilson, George Benson, Jimmy Smith, Amy Grant, Neil Diamond and Kenny Rogers. In 1978 he released his first solo album, “Single.” In 1979 he won his first Grammy award for co-writing “After the Love is Gone,” which was later recorded by Earth, Wind & Fire. During the Chicago/EWF tours in 2004 and 2005, Champlin was asked to perform this song with them, as lead singer. In 1982 he joined Chicago to record “Chicago 16.” His unique and expressive voice can be heard on “Hard Habit to Break” from Chicago 17. Bill's 1988 recording of the song “In the Heat of the Night” was picked up as the show opener by the TV show of the same name. The following year Chicago released what turned out to be it's biggest-selling single and their last No. 1 hit, “Look Away,” once again with Bill on lead vocal. Four more solo albums followed from Bill's fertile mind: “Burn Down The Night” (1992), “Through It All” (1994), “He Started To Sing” (1995) and “Mayday” (1996). In July 1997 Chicago topped the adult contemporary chart with “Here in My Heart,” as the band once again turned to Bill for lead vocals. That same year also rendered the release of “West Coast All Stars,” an a cappella project he did with Jason Scheff of Chicago and Toto's Bobby Kimball and Joseph Williams. The Sons of Champlin reunited in 1997, with a loyal group of enthusiastic fans traveling great distances to see them perform. They recorded “Live At The Luther Burbank Center” in 1998, as well as “Secret” (CD and DVD) and “Hip Lil' Dreams” in 2002. Bill's solo release “No Place Left To Fall” (CD and DVD), recorded at The Barber Shop Studios in Hopatcong, NJ for the Dream Makers Music label. It was first released by JVC Japan in September 2008, as well as being released for digital downloading, and later released in Europe by Zync Music in December. The U.S. release by Dream Makers came in August 2009. On the heels of that US release and after 28 years with Chicago, Bill parted ways with the band to focus more on his solo career. “This music is callin' me,” he said.

GRAMMY® Award Winning Multi-Instrumentalist, Producer, Songwriter and Arranger ~Philly Int'l, MFSB, Gamble & Huff Tribute to the Songwriter, Musician, Bobby Eli (1946-2023)Intro Music ~ TSOP (The Sound of Philadelphia) '73. Composed by Kenneth Gamble and Leon HuffMusic by MFSB , Vocals by The Three Degrees(C) 1973 TSOP/Philadelphia International Records, Inc.My Music Flashback Series continues this week featuring the genre of R& B. Soul & Funk.It can be a great tribute to a music artist when their style can influence current pop culture for century's & decades. The genre of Soul, R & B & Funk is taken for granted today & the influence is heard & seen in grooves, style & fashions most of todays' pop artists. However, the original recording artists truly paid dues to get in the position to not only become recording artists, but to write & produce their work. At that time, some of the artists who created a new innovative style had the challenge of the music executives not understanding the genre, and some even refusing to promote the compositions. Today we call this music - classics & the artists trailblazers. My guest this week in one of them. Bobby Eli is a Grammy Award Winning, internationally acclaimed Grammy Winning Record Producer, Engineer, Songwriter, Arranger and Multi-Instrumentalist. Bobby was a founding member of the famed Philadelphia studio group, MFSB. If the music is Philadelphia International, Gamble & Huff / TSOP. Bobby's music is more than likely on it. His signature guitar licks can be heard on countless gold and platinum hit recordings by artists such as: Chris Brown, Jay Z, George Clinton, Elton John, David Bowie, Hall and Oats, The Jacksons, MFSB, The Ojay's, Teddy Pendergrass, The Stylistics, Lou Rawls,Salsoul Orchestra, Patti Labelle, Phyllis Hyman, B.B. King, Dixie Hummingbirds, Billy Paul, The Spinners, Johnny Mathis, Deniece Williams, Wilson Pickett, Dusty Springfield, Nancy Wilson, and many other wonderful artists too numerous to mention. As a songwriter and producer Eli was responsible for such monster hits as the Grammy winning number one song, “Love Won't Let Me Wait”, as recorded by Luther Vandross, “Sideshow” and “Three Ring Circus” by Blue Magic, “Just Don't Want To Be Lonely” by the Main Ingredient, the first two albums by: “Atlantic Starr”, self titled and “Straight to the Point”, the Grammy nominated album: “Love Niecy Style” by Deniece Williams, Rose Royce's number one U.K. hit single “Magic Touch” and their album” Music Magic”. Bobby was responsible for the Jackie Moore number one dance classic,” This Time Baby”, the number one international hit singles “Zoom” by Fat Larry's Band and “Love Town” by Booker Newberry III.Artists as diverse as Luther Vandross, BeBe & CeCe Winans, Shaggy, Regina Belle, The Whispers, Isaac Hayes, The Dells, Sister Sledge, Englebert Humperdink, Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes and an array ofothers have recorded Bobby's songs.Bobby now owns and operates The Grooveyard @ Studio E, a recording facility in Upper Darby, Pennsylvania. His intimate studio is only minutes from his hometown, The City Of Brotherly Love, Philadelphia. Meet Frank KingI am a Suicide Prevention Speaker and Comedian, was a writer for The Tonight Show for 20 years, a full-time speaker and comedian for 37. I've worked with Jeff Foxworthy, Jerry Seinfeld, Jon Stewart, Steve Harvey, Rosie, Ellen, The Beach Boys, Neil Sedaka, Randy Travis, and Lou Rawls. I've fought a lifetime battle with Depression and Chronic Suicidality, turning that long dark journey of the soul into 11 TEDx Talks, one SPEAK Event, and sharing my lifesaving insights on Mental Health with colleges, corporations and associations. I've survived 2 aortic valve replacements, a double bypass, a heart attack, 3 stents, losing to a puppet on the Original Star Search and lived to joke about all of it.A comedian who speaks on depression and suicide. How does that work? Well, depression and suicide run in my family. It's called generational depression and suicide. My grandmother died by suicide. My mom found her. Nine years later, my great aunt died by suicide. My mom and I found her. I was four years old. I screamed for days. In 2010, after filing a Chapter Seven bankruptcy in April, I came very close to suicide. Close enough, I can tell you what the barrel of my gun tastes like. Spoiler alert. I did not pull the trigger. A friend of mine came up at a keynote recently. He goes, “Hey man, how come you didn't pull the trigger?”I go, “Hey, man, could you try to sound slightly less disappointed?” So that's where the humor is in the topic. It's not jokes. It's just funny, personal anecdotes. That's why. And I myself live with two mental illnesses, major depressive disorder and chronic suicidal ideation, major depressive disorder, relatively common. Chronic suicidal ideation, far more rare. It means for people in my tribe, the option of suicide's always on the menu as a solution for problems large and small. And when I say small, my car broke down a couple years ago. I had three thoughts unbidden. One, get it fixed, two buy new, and three, I could just kill myself. That's chronic suicidal ideation. You have 11 Tedx Talks. How did you land all of those? Well, the only person who had five was the guy in England. He passed away. That's the most I've been able to find anybody else has gotten. In 2014, I applied. It was a Tedx in British Columbia. And I got it on my first try, which is unusual. And then two TEDx events reached out to me after that said, do you have any more mental health ideas to talk about? And I did. So I did two more at their request. The next seven I applied for and got. And I've got a really big social media footprint on LinkedIn. And an event in India, in the state of Assam, reached out and said, we like your take on mental health. Would you be willing to do a TEDx force virtually? I said, absolutely. So I got invited to as well. So, it's just a matter of applying, it's a bit of a numbers game. I got my first one on the first try, but the other ones took 20, 30, 40 applications before I got the audition and got asked to do it.Connect with Frank!LinkedInXthementalhealthcomedian.com

If you play with silver toys during a lightning storm, will you be struck down? Langston and David chat with Kevin "KevOnStage" Fredericks (Here's The Thing Podcast) about this electrifying conspiracy theory. The guys trace things back to their "playing with action figures" days and wonder what toys were made of and how our curiosity got the best of us when learning about electricity. Whether you stick a fork in a socket or put a metal tuna can in the microwave, we were determined to get superpowers! Talks of ESP and Lou Rawls occur, but that's nothing really new to this podcast.
