BROOKLYN WRITER WINS GRAND PRIZE AT HOLLYWOOD AWARDS EVENT Featured in New Release HOLLYWOOD - Brooklyn, New York writer Randyn Bartholomew is the Grand Prize Winner in the L. Ron Hubbard Writers of the Future Contest earning him the Golden Pen Award trophy and a $5,000 cash prize. His winning story, "Ascii," is published in the international bestselling anthology, L. Ron Hubbard Presents Writers of the Future Volume 41 which will be officially released on April 22nd. Mr. Bartholomew was honored along with the other winners in the Writers and Illustrators of the Future Contests on April 10th at the Taglyan Complex in Hollywood, California. Born in New York state on pi day, Randyn grew up in the nearby New Jersey towns of Maplewood and Summit. Although majoring in math at Cornell, he's since switched gears to become a Brooklyn-based freelance writer of science journalism, ghost writing, copywriting, and, whenever possible, fiction. His articles have appeared in Scientific American, Salon, The Washington Post Magazine, among others. He enjoys running in Prospect Park, reading old books and new, and finding free lectures to attend. While he reads eclectically, his main love is science fiction. When people frown at this preference (or, much worse, smile politely) he calls in the cavalry and reminds himself of the Ray Bradbury quote, “I have never listened to anyone who criticized my taste in space travel, sideshows or gorillas. When this occurs, I pack up my dinosaurs and leave the room.” He's been using a flip phone for the last four years. The Contest, one of the most prestigious writing and illustrating competitions in the world, is currently in its 42nd year and is judged by some of the premier names in speculative fiction. WASHINGTON ARTIST HONORED AT HOLLYWOOD AWARDS GALA Featured in New Release HOLLYWOOD - Washington, Utah artist Ms. Tremani Sutcliffe is a winner in the L. Ron Hubbard Illustrators of the Future Contest and was honored along with ten other artists and twelve writers at the Taglyan Complex in Hollywood, California on April 10th. Her art is published along with the other writers' and illustrators' stories and art in the international bestselling anthology, L. Ron Hubbard Presents Writers of the Future Volume 41 which will be officially released on April 22nd 2025. Tremani Sutcliffe, born in 1990 in Provo, Utah, spent her early years exploring the rugged landscapes of middle-of-nowhere Arizona, where hiking in desert mountains and catching rattlesnakes ignited her adventurous spirit. Her passion for art stemmed from her love of books, and the fantastical covers that inspired her imagination. In true bookworm fashion, her artistic journey began at the local library, where she immersed herself in art instruction books, laying the foundation for her artistic journey. Through daily practice, relentless pursuit of new skills, and seeking mentorship from established artists, her commitment to learning new methods has continuously expanded her artistic repertoire. Tremani views art as a fusion of technique and creativity that brings beauty and meaning to life. After spending most of her young life drawing and painting with watercolors, she expanded her skillset to include oils. Although she also began working with acrylics, she quickly decided they must have been invented by an angry dude with horns and a pitchfork for the sole purpose of making her life miserable….and decided to develop her digital painting skills instead. The Illustrators of the Future Contest judges include, Bob Eggleton (11 Chesley Awards and 9 Hugo Awards), Larry Elmore (Dungeons & Dragons book covers), Echo Chernik (graphic designs for major corporations including Celestial Seasonings tea packaging), Rob Prior (art for Spawn, Heavy Metal comics and Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Ciruelo (Eragon Coloring Book).

Whisky fans want to taste and explore the new releases from Crown Royal, Canadian Club, Forty Creek, Hiram Walker, JP Wiser's Lot 40, Pike Creek, Gooderham and Worts, Nikka, Amrut, The Dalmore and Glencadam. For the first time ever,  Gisbelle Distillery a distillery from China,  would be joining the lineup. The West Coast and Vancouver Island were well represented. Stillhead, Odd Society, DubhGlas, Sheringham, Sons of Vancouver & Shelter Point. Over 200 whiskies were up for the awards. 14 judges from across the country tasted and scored. The Grand Prize Winner, judged Canadian Whisky of the Year was, The Peat Project Moscatel Barrique single malt from Macaloney's Island Distillery (Saanich)   Here are the guests on part one of the 2025 Whisky Awards and Victoria Whisky Festival Davin De Kergommeaux  -  Davin is the flag bearer for Canadian Whisky. He singlehandedly brought Canadian Whisky to the attention of Canada and The World. His latest book is the updated and expanded third edition of Canadian Whisky - The Essential Portable Expert. I love the first line. "Handles, mickeys, shots or drams, no matter what its measure, Canadian whisky is a story of Canada." Davin is my ultimate connection to the world of Canadian Whisky. He helped create these awards and leads the judging team. Grant Stevely - Distiller at DubhGlas (Oliver) In the fall of 2010, Grant purchased some property at Gallagher Lake near Oliver, B.C. “I wanted to build a distillery from the ground up, which is distinctly different from a lot of other distilleries,” he says. “So we built the distillery with expansion in mind.”  Grant Stevely[/caption] At the heart of the operation is a German-made Arnold Holstein still. No sooner did Stevely open Dubh Glas Distillery in the spring of 2015, when he began winning awards for his first product, Noteworthy Gin. “Dubh Glas” is Scottish Gaelic for “from the dark water.” It's pronounced “Douglas,” which happens to be Stevely's middle name. Jason MacIsaac - Distiller. Sheringham (Langford, BC) Sheringham Distillery  won Best Contemporary Gin at the 2019 World Gin Awards Its Seaside Gin captured the award against World-class competition from 23 countries,  including the UK  and USA. "We created Sheringham because we saw a hole in the market: the opportunity to create the world's most drinkable spirits. This approach has served us well, and in the seven years since founding Sheringham, we have been on the ground building authentic connections with buyers, retailers, and consumers, sharing our story and highlighting our chef-driven approach to innovation and quality."  (Distiller Mag) Jason and wife  Alayne now have their growing portfolio available across Canada and in 15 markets in the USA. Graeme Macaloney - Master Distiller  Macaloney Island Distillery (Saanich) There once was a wee Scottish lad by the name of Graeme Macaloney who found a summer job bottling whisky and fell in love with Uisge Beatha, the ‘water of life'. He dedicated his heart to finding a way to make whisky for a living. Graeme set up shop on Saanich, just outside Victoria. Some of his favourite Scottish and Irish whiskies were island-made. Graeme has found his "island" in Canada. Congratulations Champ!! - Distillery opened in 2016 - The first whisky made onsite and  released in 2020 -Canadian Whisky of the Year - 2025 Brennan Colebank - Master Distiller Stillhead Distillery (Duncan) Founded by the Colebank family, Stillhead Distillery Inc. opened its doors in October of 2017. After working 15 years in the tech industry, Master Distiller Brennan Colebank left his job to pursue his dream career, blending the two things he loved most: chemistry and spirits.  The chemist has created an amazing portfolio and a home for Whisky in the Cowichan Valley. www.victoriawhiskyfestival.com www.canadianwhiskyawards.com

Lazarus Black is an American author of genre fiction living under the shadow of a Pacific Northwest volcano with three Goddesses, his wife and two daughters. “Psychic Poker” is Lazarus's first sale, but hardly his last. It juxtaposes poker, the synthesis of probability and human behavior, with psychic powers, the solution to both probability and the chaos of free will. What if every player is psychic? What if no player has an advantage? What if their lives are at stake? But the strength of the story is in the reluctant main character: Tyson Young, a middle-aged Aussie with an acute wit. Lazarus writes from life. His stories are inspired by the diverse communities he has lived in, plus friends and family across the globe. He specifically attacks stereotypes and reinvents tropes to reflect authentic experiences that are sometimes stranger than fiction. He once earned a free funeral until the mortician learned his name was Lazarus and a good laugh was had by all (bystanders included). A true lover of learning, Lazarus has traversed North America dozens of times, has been a professional artist, advertising creative, software developer, database designer, epigrapher, executive, educator, inventor, game designer, pool hustler, heathen clergyman, machinist's apprentice, glass blower, scholar, actor, many other roles, and now published author of fiction. He hopes you enjoy “Psychic Poker” and look forward to reading more from him in the future. For more about Lazarus go to www.lazarus.black Bea is recognized for her love of telling stories through her art. Bryan, Texas artist Tyler Vail is the Grand Prize Winner in the L. Ron Hubbard Illustrators of the Future Contest earning him the Golden Brush Award trophy and $5,000. His illustration of the story, "Squiddy," by Writers of the Future Winner John Eric Schleicher is published in the international bestselling anthology, L. Ron Hubbard Presents Writers of the Future Volume 40 which was officially released on May 7th. Mr. Vail was honored along with the other winners in the Writers and Illustrators of the Future Contests on April 25th at the Taglyan Complex in Hollywood, California. Tyler Vail was born in 1996 in Dallas, Texas. At a young age, Tyler was deeply inspired by fantasy and sci-fi media and would spend many late nights striving to bring his ideas to life in the form of drawings. He would later refine his skills as an illustrator by joining every art contest he could find, actively participating in online communities, and getting feedback from anyone that would look at his art. Today, Tyler continues his passion for art and dreaming of fantastic new worlds, characters, and creatures. He enjoys working with other creatives to share in a collaborative and positive experience and strives for excellence in all aspects of the artistic process. Missoula, Montana writer John Eric Schleicher is a winner in the L. Ron Hubbard Writers of the Future Contest and was honored along with eleven other writers and twelve artists at the Taglyan Complex in Hollywood, California on April 25th. His story, "Squiddy," is published along with the other writers' and illustrators' stories and art in the international bestselling anthology, L. Ron Hubbard Presents Writers of the Future Volume 40 which will be officially released on May 7th. John Eric Schleicher writes stories that leave behind a fantastical aftertaste long after reading. While story rules the roost, John Eric's favorite authors tell their tales with panache and pleasing prose. Toni Morrison, Cormac McCarthy, Stephen King, and Ray Bradbury top his literary cake. When not reading or writing, John Eric enjoys wandering wonderstruck, whether on two legs or knobby wheels, the mountains near his home in Missoula, Montana. His greatest loves are his son Ryder and wife Ashlee, to whom “Squiddy” is dedicated. “Squiddy,” his first professional sale, is a spawn of the post-apocalyptic imaginings of an extraterrestrial Squid invasion and explores the self-destructive habits we seek to escape or soften despair. John Eric's short fiction has also appeared in Creepy Podcast.

Arlington, Virginia writer Jack Nash is the Grand Prize Winner in the L. Ron Hubbard Writers of the Future Contest earning him the Golden Pen Award trophy and $5,000. His winning story, "Son, Spirit, Snake," is published in the international bestselling anthology, L. Ron Hubbard Presents Writers of the Future Volume 40 which has an official release date of May 7th. Mr. Nash was honored along with the other winners in the Writers and Illustrators of the Future Contests on April 25th at the Taglyan Complex in Hollywood, California. Jack Nash started writing when he became a speech and ghostwriter for a former head of state and Nobel Peace Prize winner. After his non-accredited work appeared in places like The New York Times, The Economist, and received standing ovations at the Nobel Foundation, he began to wonder what he could achieve if he turned towards fiction. He began seriously writing speculative stories in late 2021, and he received the call that he would be published in Writers of the Future one year plus one day after his first professional sale to The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction. As a result, he is now strongly superstitious. Originally from the deserts of the American West, Jack now wanders the urban forests of Virginia with his wife and daughter. The Contest, one of the most prestigious writing and illustrating competitions in the world, is currently in its 41st year and is judged by some of the premier names in speculative fiction. Mark Leslie Lefebvre is the author of more than thirty books that include the award-winning humorous urban fantasy Canadian Werewolf series— hailed by readers as “the thinking man's werewolf”—and his award-nominated ghostly explorations such as Haunted Hospitals and Tomes of Terror. He is also the editor of more than ten anthologies that include titles in the Hugo Award Nominated Pulphouse Fiction Magazine and the Aurora Award-winning Tesseracts series, which showcases the best in Canadian speculative fiction. His work has been translated into French, Italian, and German. While choosing the shorter and easier-to-spell moniker of Mark Leslie for most of his writing, Mark leverages his full name for work in inspiring, informing, and assisting other authors. Mark's first short story was published in 1992, the same year he began in the book industry. He is a tireless advocate for libraries, bookstores, and other authors and has held the roles of president of The Canadian Booksellers Association, board member for BookNet Canada, chair of the Professional Advisor Committee for Sheridan College's Honours Degree in Writing and Publishing, and Director of Self-Publishing and Author Relations for Rakuten, Kobo, Inc. where he launched Kobo Writing Life. A pioneer in digital publishing, Mark has embraced both traditional and self-publishing routes and continues to look for new ways that technology and innovation can improve the industry for all authors. He has appeared on countless podcasts, television, and radio programs and has spoken on stages across Canada and the United States as well as in England, Germany, France, and Italy. Mark's weekly podcast, Stark Reflections on Writing and Publishing—launched in January 2018— takes an unflinching look at the reality of the publishing world with a balanced take on the pros and cons of various publishing routes. One of his greatest passions is helping writers navigate the bold new realms and opportunities that continue to unfold as the industry evolves.
