A Note from Jacob: If you or someone you know are experiencing a mental health crisis, please call 988.   It is a pleasure to welcome singer and actress Marla Mase to The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast.  A native New Yorker, Marla was born in Brooklyn and raised in Canarsie. At 18, she moved to Tribeca, where she lived for 32 years, raised her two children, and founded PARTYpoopers/partySWANK, one of NYC's premier event planning companies. In addition to her entrepreneurial success, Marla is a versatile artist—an accomplished writer, performer, recording artist, and the COO of Brooklyn-based True Groove Records. She recently returned from her third whirlwind tour of the UK this year, promoting her eighth and ninth album releases, The Fine Art of Pissing in the Bushes and Infinite They Went (vinyl). She is touring Being Somebody, a show she co-wrote and performs alongside her 88-year-old father, Dr. Howard Mase, to sold-out audiences across the East Coast. Her other theatrical works have been featured at prestigious venues such as La MaMa ETC, NYC SummerStage, NJPAC, SXSW, and Nuyorican Poets Café.   Marla Mase is also the founder of The Lael Project. Lael, a talented singer and graduate of the University of Southern California's prestigious Thornton School of Music Popular Music Program, had struggled with depression, anorexia, and suicidal thoughts from a young age. Despite her battles, she chose to help others, working at a treatment center in Los Angeles for individuals suffering from mental illness. Lael's empathy and understanding profoundly impacted those she worked with, many of whom have shared with Marla how her daughter saved their lives. “After she died, I received numerous emails, texts, and calls from residents who told me that Lael was the reason they were alive today,” Marla recounted. “Lael was not a therapist per se, but they felt she understood what they were going through better than anyone else.”   Marla's mission now is to honor Lael's legacy by using her music to help others recognize the signs of suicide and seek help. The Lael Project is a two-volume album featuring both original songs and covers recorded by Lael during her brief but impactful music career. The project features re-mixes, never-before-released material, live recordings dating back to her pre-teen years and remastered versions of her two existing albums, Burden to Bear (2013) and Life in Color (2015). Scheduled for release in 2025 under Brooklyn's True Groove Records, The Lael Project aims to open conversations about mental illness and break the stigma around suicide.    On this episode of The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast, Marla Mase discussed the stories behind several of her songs, including “Hit Me with Your Rhythm Stick,” “Falling Sideways,” and “All Fall Short.” She also discussed how you can get involved with the Lael Project.Let's connect on social media: A) BlueSky: https://bsky.app/profile/jacobelyachar.bsky.socialB) Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/JacobElyachar/C) Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jacobelyachar/D) Threads: https://www.threads.net/@jacobelyacharE) Twitter (X): https://x.com/JacobElyacharF) YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@JacobElyacharBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/jake-s-take-with-jacob-elyachar--4112003/support.

There are times when you get a sense that you're talking with an old friend that you've actually never met. There are shared times and memories that travelled on parallel lines but somehow never managed to intersect. That's the best way that I can describe the conversation I had with Shelly Berg. From places lived and mutual friends, to times spent working with Jazz Aspen Snowmass in Colorado, our off-mic discussion created “allegría,” the Spanish word for joy, which is not only the name of his new album, but the foundation of his perspective on life.  Shelly feels that the more an audience feels included in the music, the better time everybody has, the more opportunity there is for the music to reach - and move - them. That's the foundation of ‘Allegría,' a collaborative album of  Berg originals, plus fresh takes on classics from Leonard Bernstein and The Beatles, performed with longtime friends, bassist Carlitos Del Puerto, drummer Dafnis Prieto and special guest, Melvin Butler.  Shelly draws inspiration not only from his experiences as a leader in higher education as dean of the University of Miami's Frost School of Music since 2007 - and before that  as a professor at USC's Thornton School for 16 years - but also as a collaborator with jazz legendary international artists, including Gloria Estefan, Arturo Sandoval, Steve Miller, and Pharrell Williams, among others.  All of that rich backstory is brought into ‘Allegría,' creating an understanding of joy, and all its co-existing chambers — sorrow, longing, faith, peace, reflection.  Shelly describes it as, “A big narrative made up of smaller ones,” that allows listeners to feel “connected to the music and the arc of the album.” That's where our joyful conversation begins.

Incoming Dean of the Thornton School of Music at USC Jason King returns to Pop Pantheon to discuss the life and career of the architect of rock ‘n roll, Little Richard. Louie and Jason unpack Little Richard's breakthrough “Tutti Frutti,” which is widely credited as the genesis of rock n' roll music, and his string of hits through the 1950s; perhaps one of the first imperial phases in modern music history. They break down what it meant for Little Richard to drop an explosive glitter bomb of queerness into American culture, his musical output after his initial burst of fame, how his iconoclastic celebrity helped birth the rock star and the complicated ways in which he moved in and out of the closet through the years. We had the pleasure of interviewing Liddy Clark over Zoom video! There's a word that comes up whenever Liddy Clark talks about her music – “connection.” Currently based in Los Angeles, the Plano, Texas native relocated with her family to South Florida (Parkland), just before first grade. This was a pivotal move for Liddy, as theatre is very important in the area and the move put her in a position to grow up on the stage. Inspired by artistic family members like her cousin, Drew Womack (formerly Sons of the Desert and writer of Kenny Chesney's first number one hit “She's Got it All”), she amassed the resume of a seasoned entertainer. During her last summer in high school Liddy won a scholarship to join the esteemed Berklee Five Week Summer Program, additionally earning a spot on the coveted Performer Singer-Songwriter Showcase and praise from professors like famed singer-songwriter Melissa Ferrick. But even as she began fronting her own band at 15 – opening for major artists like Scotty McCreery and performing for major radio stations in South Florida – she was searching for something deeper than fame or fortune.Out of the gate, Clark was finding connection through tender, personal lyricism, earning praise from heavyweights like Garth Brooks after seeing Liddy perform at the iHeart Country Music Summit in 2017. In 2018, Liddy contributed a mystical rendition of “Do You Hear What I Hear?” to the Cracker Barrel exclusive Country Faith Christmas, Vol. 2, joining the likes of Carrie Underwood, Kelsea Ballerini, Darius Rucker and Brenda Lee on the album's track list. She went on to win a songwriting scholarship with former Senior Vice President of Creative at Warner Chappell Music, Judy Stakee (Katy Perry, Sheryl Crow, and Gavin DeGraw) who quickly identified Clark's talent and invited her to a songwriting retreat in New York's Catskill Mountains. In 2018 the tragic school shooting in Clark's hometown of Parkland, Florida, gave her a sense of clarity about her mission. By then, a freshman at the University of Southern California's Thornton School of Music, she knew many of the families affected, and indeed, her own family still lived just a few blocks from the school.Later that year she was invited to perform at Parkland's Wear Orange gun-violence awareness event. Clark delivered the emotional anthem she had written the week prior at the Catskill Mountain retreat “Shot Down (Stand Up),” boldly speaking truth to power and voicing the concerns of her peers. “This problem has answers that won't be found / If every time we try to stand up, we get shot down,” Liddy has a brand new single, "Potential," out now with plans for a full album out later this year.We want to hear from you! This week Alexa is joined by an author, educator, presenter, and vocal coach who specialises in teaching the child singer. She is the founder of Born 2 Sing Kids and mentors other voice teachers in working with this particular demographic. Dana Lentini joins us from New York to tell you all you need to know about teaching children to sing.  KEY TAKEAWAYS Often it is said that kids shouldn't take private voice lessons: Many well-intentioned experts recommend choral and group singing as the only means for children to learn singing proficiency, pushing their individual learning to instruments like piano and violin. While choral singing is a great experience for kids and offers a broad understanding of good singing techniques, what it doesn't offer is the opportunity for singers to recognize their own uniqueness. And other instruments, while wonderful to learn, do not teach children how to become empowered with one of the most important assets they will use throughout their entire lives: their own voices. Private voice lessons offer the young singer freedom to uncover their own personal growth and ability. And unlike other instruments, children use their voice all day every day - why not help them learn how to use it in a healthy manner, with techniques designed just for their age and ability? Under the guidance of a well-educated and knowledgeable vocal expert - one who understands the differences between teaching voice to a child versus an adult - these experiences can be a wonderful opportunity to explore their own range of singing possibilities. Through a systematic, customised approach, young singers learn the foundations for a healthy singing technique that will support them throughout their lives. Born 2 Sing Kids offers a positive, nurturing environment where kids can learn to grow and express their voice. Dana's book Teaching the Child Singer is an indispensable resource for teachers who work with kids in the voice studio. Coming soon is Level 1 of her Kids' Singing Songbook series, designed to take the guesswork out of repertoire and make learning music fun. Research has proven that structured music lessons can positively affect all areas of child development, including higher academic performance, cognitive and memory skills, confidence, focus, self-expression, language and listening skills, task completion, enhanced creativity, and so much more. What do Billie Eilish, Olivia Rodrigo, and the Grammys have in common? Tehillah Alphonso. I discovered Tehillah while reading my high school alumni magazine.  Tehillah and I both went to an all-girls Catholic school in Omaha, Nebraska. Marian High School was a place that encouraged young women to live a life of pride in themselves, their grades, their faith, and how they walk in the world.  And Tehillah has done this in spades.New-Jersey-born and Nebraska-raised, Tehillah Alphonso is a Nigerian-American musician based in Los Angeles, California.Though Tehillah was introduced to music at an early age, her musical endeavors truly began in 2014 when she was accepted into an elite teen summer intensive called A Cappella Academy.A proud Summa Cum Laude graduate of the University of Southern California, Tehillah received her B.M. in Popular Music Performance from the Thornton School of Music and was named the 2020 Outstanding Graduate. While a full-time student at USC, she served as Business Manager and Music Director of USC's premiere a cappella group, and five-time ICCA champions, the SoCal VoCals. The Los Angeles Guitar Quartet Runs on Coffee: William Kanengiser on LAGQ's New Album, Opalescent, and How Connection, Gratitude, and Wellness Inspire His Creativity

Longevity and chamber music don't often go together. For every Emerson String Quartet that spends decades performing together, there are scores of chamber ensembles calling it quits every year. So when a group like the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet reaches its 40th anniversary, it's a cause for celebration. So what's the secret to their continued longevity? For founding member William Kanengiser, it all comes down to a foundation of friendship and gratitude. "It's really interesting that we were friends first, and then bandmates," Kanengiser says in the latest episode of the Classical Post podcast. "Like any group, we've had our trials and tribulations ... but we've left a legacy that we're proud of. We've had fun doing it and we've hopefully given people a little bit of joy and solace as we've gone along. We have a lot to be thankful for." That sense of celebration and gratitude is at the heart of LAGQ's new album, Opalescent. The Grammy Award–winning ensemble's 14th album finds the quartet exploring ideas of light, color, and sound through a wide range of works by composers they've worked with throughout the years. In this conversation, we discuss the new album, how the joys of human connection inspire William's music-making, and the important role wellness plays in his personal and professional life as a co-founder of the Thornton Musicians Wellness Committee at the University of Southern California's Thornton School of Music. Plus, Bill muses on his favorite espresso and the central role coffee plays in the LAGQ, his passion for cooking as a creative outlet, and how New York City's restaurants served as his gateway to the world while growing up in suburban New Jersey. Listen to Opalescent wherever you stream or download music. — Classical Post uncovers the creativity that exists behind great music.
