My guest this week is Katie Harford Hogue, who joins me to chat about the wonderful album 'Julia Belle: The John Hartford Fiddle Tune Project, Vol. 2'We discuss how the project came about, following the discovery of dozens of John Hartford's notebooks, kept between 1983 and 2001, full of as many as 4,000 original fiddle tunes he'd composed. That led to the book - 'John Hartford's Mammoth Collection of Fiddle Tunes', followed by two albums, the second of which we're exploring today.Co-produced by Katie, with Sharon Gilchrist and Megan Lynch Chowning, 'Julia Belle' features a selection of John's original fiddle tunes, as well as some favourite songs, performed by some of the most beloved female artists in the Hartford-inspired bluegrass scene, including Rachel Baiman, Phoebe Hunt, Ginger Boatwright, Brittany and Natalie Haas, Deanie Richardson, Allison de Groot, Della Mae, The Price Sisters, Uncle Earl, Alison Brown, Missy Raines and Sierra Hull. It's a wonderful record and made for a fascinating conversation. In this episode, Patrice, Marleah, and Courtney sip eggnog while unraveling the mystery of Alabama's spooky White Thang - a glowy-eyed cryptid that's either a tall albino Bigfoot, a giant ghost cat, or possibly just Uncle Earl in his long johns screaming at the moon.

Jordan Piazza is the Founder of ReBirth Brands. He started this company to revitalize brands in the Baton Rouge area and take their reputation to new heights with reformed management tactics. Jordan has a long list of experience in the hospitality industry growing up inside a local favorite, Phil's, which was founded by his late father. After working at top companies such as Walk-on's and Raising Canes early on in his career; Jordan was able to take the best business practices and apply it to his first big revitalization project with his brother - reopening Phil's in honor of his dad. Hospitality is definitely in his blood, because he now helps manages many trailblazers in the area such as Uncle Earl's, Schlitts & Giggles, and The Caterie. At one point in his career, he even ran for Major of Baton Rouge! Alienation, abandonment and dislocated shoulders: not really your usual ingredients for a tender festive heart-warmer. But then again, The Holdovers – unequivocally one of our favourite films of the last twelve months – isn't your average Christmas movie. Directed by Alexander Payne and written by our guest today, the brilliant David Hemingson, it's a drama steeped in the pain of reaching the so-called “most wonderful time of the year” and feeling nothing but loneliness. The film tells the story of three loners thrown together by circumstance over the Christmas break at a New England boarding school, each disillusioned with a world that doesn't seem to want them. They have their differences. One – Paul, played by Paul Giamatti – is a miserly middle-aged academic with an odour problem. Another – Angus, played by newcomer Dominic Sessa – is a brash student of his, on the brink of being sent to military school. The third and possible heartbeat of the movie, Da'Vine Joy Randolph's Mary Lamb, is their school cook – a woman who recently lost everything. These characters find a richness in each other that's uplifting without ever feeling schmaltzy or sentimental. It's a staggeringly beautiful film.In the spoiler conversation you're about to hear, David tells us about Uncle Earl, the real-life family member he based the character Paul on. You'll hear how his first draft involved a woman Paul used to date with porcelain fingers, after injuring her hand in a car accident. We also spend some time debating the words "not for ourselves alone are we born" – the lesson, if there is one, of The Holdovers, and a mantra we could all doing with reminding ourselves of more in our fragmented 2024.Script Apart is hosted by Al Horner and produced by Kamil Dymek. Welcome Back to Jonah Asks. In this episode, meet Don Greenstein. I've known Don since I was a child. His mom is my Great Aunt Betty, which makes him my cousin. Don has a background in conflict management, facilitation of difficult communications, organizational development, law, and creative dispute management processes. He has more than 30 years of experience creating unique conflict resolution processes to meet the needs of those involved...at least that is what his work bio says. Don is a warm, compassionate and thoughtful human. Nearly all the children of those three couples have been through their own divorces. Don: "I think it was the culture of my generation. Don: "Relationships are hard, but I think people of the older generation knew hardships and knew how to work and were willing to stay." Jonah mentions cultural changes, employment changes and opening up of options for women.Mediation: Creating a Fair ProcessMediations require people to give up things on both sides. When people walk away from mediation, if each person is a little agitated, that's probably a win-win. If one person feels very happy and the other is mad, that's unacceptable to me.Both people have to be willing to compromise. I've often thought it would be a great way to set a business model. If this is a hot dispute and you're going to yell at each other, then my rates are going to be $500 an hour. If you guys can work together, It'll be $150 an hour."Business Counseling Versus Personal CounselingDon had social work experience working with juveniles when he was in college. From Uncle Earl's Bar in Baton Rouge, Tom Canterbury and Gray Robertson are here to talk all things softball with a fun cast of characters. It's another short episode, so the guys are changing the format again and turning the 6-4-3 double play. Here's the Out of the Box version of the pitcher's best friend, in (essentially) unedited form: 6 (0:00-12:21): Tom and Gray explain the schedule changes with the Alabama-LSU series and then each provide three keys for the weekend. 4 (12:33-32:45): Tom and Gray examine the other SEC series this weekend and discuss an interesting query put out on Twitter by Missouri head coach Larissa Anderson. Then, SID extraordinaire and frequent contributor Nathan Sheehan introduces a game of “Fair or Foul,” giving Tom and Gray a chance to debate some statements. 3 (32:55-1:00:43): Somehow, “Off the Wall” returns as the guys look at crazy reactions to the ever-shifting TV schedule. Then, Tom goes through all the good eats in Baton Rouge in “Tom's Hungry,” and Nathan Sheehan returns for the first edition this year of “Nate's Thirsty.” Note: The Crimson Tide Sports Network's softball radio affiliate has changed. To listen to games, tune in to 97.5 FM Tuscaloosa, download the 97.5 FM app (https://t.co/MC0HVxSw2T), or visit https://nick975.com/listen-live/popup/.
Ahead of the craziest two-week stretch ever, Tom Canterbury and Gray Robertson are back in a shorter episode to break everything down involving Alabama, the SEC, and a lot of the hot topics around the country. A smaller episode changed up the format too! Here's the play: Slap (0:00-27:32): Tom and Gray take one more quick look at the Crimson Classic, then discuss the start of SEC play this weekend and then the two non-conference games early next week. Then, the guys look at Five Big Things around the SEC from this past weekend, including LSU's topsy-turvy results, Florida's rebound, and the search for Makinzy Herzog. Run (27:47-1:01:13): Tom and Gray examine the recently revealed RPI, pick another FGCL Player of the Week, look at big games around the country this weekend, and then make their first official SEC series picks of the season. Then, “Off the Wall” returns as the guys look at complaints about hits vs. runs, common opponents, tickets, and more. Reminder: There will be an "On the Road" episode of the podcast from Uncle Earl's Bar in Baton Rouge on Saturday at a time TBA. Also, there will be another edition of "Out of the Box: Going Home After Alabama vs. Florida State" on Wednesday following the game. That'll be on Twitter Spaces under the Out of the Box account (@OutoftheBox_Pod). Radio Note: The Crimson Tide Sports Network's softball radio affiliate has changed. Terrell Green had a tough upbringing. His mom suffered from addiction though, and he lost his father at an early age. He grew up listening to comedians like Richard Pryor, who was a major inspiration for him. He was also a top athlete coming out of Edison High School and went to Fresno City College. This is where it turned bad for him, unfortunately, as he saw his best friend get murdered in front of him. After that incident, he was depressed and suicidal. He stopped playing sports. The guilt weighed on him, as he felt responsible for putting his friend in that situation. He really struggled for a long time, but he was finally able to break out of it. One day, he saw some comedy videos that inspired him to do the same thing, and he was able to find therapy in comedy. He would create characters of people he would see in his neighborhood, for better or worse, and show people what his life was like through this distorted comedic lens. His comedy videos ended up going viral on Tik Tok, Youtube & social media sites and started getting the attention of some pretty big names. than legendary rapper and entertainment mogul Snoop Dogg, who reposted one of his videos to his millions of followers. He started getting feedback that he was helping other people going through the same problems as he was, and this inspired him to write in his journal. Finally, he put his plan in motion to start writing his book, "Against All Odds: A Story About How I Became". After that major release, Terrell was able to reach a large number of people struggling with the same things he was, which in turn helped everyone help each other. The feedback on his book has been nothing but positive, and Terrell wants to keep that dialogue with his fans open & make sure anyone that needs help can get the support they need. 448. Part 2 of our interview with Bob Mann. Bob has a new memoir, Backrooms and Bayous: My Life in Louisiana Politics. State history, behind-the-scenes stories, funny anecdotes, and life lessons come together to form Robert Mann's indelible memoir about his life and career alongside some of the most powerful lawmakers in the South. Offering an in-depth, personal perspective of working in government, Mann shares the lives of major politicians and how they affected his own beliefs, eventually shifting his ideological views. Mann has known every Louisiana governor--aside from Uncle Earl--since 1944. He has interviewed past presidents, senators, and aides as a journalist and served as press secretary to two of the most influential Louisiana legislators. He acted as press secretary to the 1990 US Senate reelection campaign of J. Bennett Johnston when he defeated former Klan leader David Duke. He helped elect Mary Landrieu to the US Senate, and his engaging stories range from Russell Long's struggle with his father's past to how Mann lost John Breaux's suitcase. Through it all, Mann writes with humor and empathy, casting politics and politicians in a refreshing, human light. This week in Louisiana history. December 18, 1948. 447. Part 1 of our interview with Bob Mann. December 11, 1901. The Rice Association of America organized in Crowley. This week in New Orleans history. A storm, with a cold-core upper low, developed on December 11, 2012 behind the first one and spread snow across parts of the Gulf Coast states including the cities of Houston, Texas, Baton Rouge, Louisiana and New Orleans, Louisiana as well as parts of southern Mississippi. Four inches fell in Lumberton and Beaumont in southeast Texas as well as just outside the Baton Rouge area and south central Louisiana. Some areas of west-central Louisiana received as much as 6 inches, while areas just south of Jackson, Mississippi received 8 to 10 inches. It was the first snowfall for the downtown New Orleans area since 2004. This week in Louisiana. Festival of the Bonfires. The Great River Road between New Orleans and Baton Rouge can lay claim on one of the more unusual public December holiday lighting displays. It's here on the earthen levees containing the Mississippi River that local Christmas lights aren't colored bulbs, but instead dozens of 20-feet-high flaming pyramids of burning logs. The Christmas bonfires, as locals call them, are mostly teepee-shaped, but some can be odd shapes paying tribute to the river's heritage—shapes ranging from miniature plantation homes to tiny replica paddlewheel steamships. Bonfires are built by families, friends and co-workers who visit, cook and mingle between the fires. It's a local celebration with an environment akin to football tailgating, and the practice has continued for generations. The bonfires are up and down the river, but the highest concentration is in St. James Parish, in and around Gramercy, Lutcher and Paulina. The best viewing is by car along the east- and west-bank River Roads (La. Hwys. 44 and 18, respectively) and by walking along the levees. Bonfire parties are not necessarily open to the public, but onlookers will likely be offered kind words and holiday greetings should they mingle on foot. Postcards from Louisiana. I sit down and talk with my witty, hilarious Uncle Earl about life, being with a partner/spouse and why he didn't get married. He also believes we should do extra for our spouses and love ones. His views on life are simple and I agree with alot of it but sometimes he can push it. Hilarious

As a young child, Kimberly Shaffer didn't have a lot of understanding of the Appalachian Trail. But her great uncle, Earl Shaffer certainly did, as the first person to successfully thru-hike the AT in 1948. This year, Kimberly decided to mark the anniversary of his first walk, and set out on the trail. This is the story of her her own walk, honoring a family legacy and along the way getting closer to the words and experiences documented by her great Uncle Earl.

Todd to the Top took over the airwaves for this episode so I could "walk the walk" in the Uinta's and test some backpacking gear. We were fortunate enough to have award-winning songwriter and composer, Kristin Andreassen in studio before her show at the Ogden Nature Center. Andreassen's music is influenced by American traditional music, including the old time string band tunes. She has toured throughout North America, Australia & Europe with her string band Uncle Earl (with Abigail Washburn, Rayna Gellert & KC Groves). Big thanks and congrats to Todd to the Top on hosting solo his First Ogden Outdoor Adventure Show! award-winning songwriter and composer who's music is influenced by American traditional music, including the old time string band tunes.
